In Philippians 2:8-9, you will find these words: Read: “And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross. Wherefore, God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name:” Whether you believe it or not, if you expect to be exalted and honored by God at the end of the race, you must humble yourself. The Way Of The Cross Leads Home

of suffering. You can’t make it in unless you suffer. Now God will give you the privilege to judge every mouth that speaks against you to judge you. God has highly exalted Jesus and given Him a name above every name. He has given instructions whereby you and I might live a life above sin which takes from you the sting of death, or the fear of death. Though you die, death has no terror. You can be as bold as a lion, yet harmless as a dove, fearing no man or woman because God’s Spirit is in you. If you have the Spirit of God, just go through and let God have His way no matter what folks say or do. Some folks say, “I won’t take it.” But you had better hear what the Lord has to say. Tonight, the world is in derision. The great men are perplexed for fear of the things that are coming on the earth. I have victory and I am trying to tell others how to get victory. You can’t have it any way, but through Christ. Thanks be to God who giveth us the victory through Jesus Christ. So, tonight, God has exalted Jesus. You have got to believe in somebody even if it is a fortune-teller. You have got to trust somebody. Anybody who tells you that you can’t help from sinning is telling you that the devil has more power than God. You might as well get right because you are going to die. Don’t think that because you are over here eating beefsteaks, you are going to live forever. What is the hope of the Church? If I die, I’ll live again. Though men do you wrong, though they kill you, if God is for you, you shall live again. That is the program. What are you gathering here for – to have somebody preach your funeral? I don’t care if the buzzards eat me, just as long as I live above sin. Now if you are not a Saint, you are a sinner, even if you live in Chevy Chase. If you do the sin that the man who lives in Barry Place does, you are both sinners. Any man who is in sin and can’t stop doing wrong needs the Lord. There are three things that bring contentment. They are security, joy and peace. If you want security, put your trust in God. I have never seen the righteous forsaken nor his seed begging bread.

Righteousness exalts a nation, but sin is a reproach to any people. I don’t care how vile a sinner you may be; you can be made clean and live above sin. Jesus came not to condemn the world, but to save it. Sin is that which condemns, and Christ came to save us from that. So tonight, have only one mind, and understand that you have got to die. Death is only a dream for a child of God. Death, when stealing upon the frame of the child of God, doesn’t excite him, but in peace he realizes that he is about to lay down the cross and go home to receive a crown which is the crown of life. Paul said when walking up to

Nero’s block, “I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith: Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day: and not to me only, but unto all them also that love his appearing” (II Timothy 4:7-8). Your fight is for everlasting life. Your fight is not to gain the victory over any mortal enemy. All these rulers will die. Your fight is to win the victory over sin and death. Concentrate on that and suffer to that end, and when you will have conquered, you will have won something. If you are clean and pure, you are walking up the way of the cross which leads home. Don’t let anything take you off. Stay up on the highway and keep walking. The way of sin is not the way of life. But the wages of sin is death and the gift of God is eternal life. If you live right every day, you will get paid at the end of the way of the cross. You can’t earn eternal life, but because you have been living right, God has prepared another body for you. If you have won, when you get up in the resurrection morning, you can say, “I thank God for victory.” May God bless you.

THE TRAIN THAT WENT TO HELLThe train was crammed from the front to the rear

The devil himself was the engineerThe plead for life I can almost hear

On the HELL BOUND TRAINThere were men and women among the crowd,

The high, the low, the meek and the proud,There were beautiful women and the handsomest men,

Who had gambled their souls for the price of sin. There were rich men most wealthy, among the crew,

Deacons, church members, and ministers too. There were elders on crutches and others on canes,

All trapped within the HELL BOUND TRAIN.There were men of all races, men of great names,Men of sound knowledge and wisdom and fame.

There were men of all creeds, the young and the oldWho had gambled with Satan for the price of their soul.

They were all in the aisle, and packed in their seats,And tied with chains both hands and feet.

The windows and all of the doors were chained,There was no escape from the HELL BOUND TRAIN

Satan took his seat and the journey beganTo eternal damnation, “The Result of Sin”.Now one of the prisoners among the crowd

Gathered the strength to say,

Satan, “what have we done that we deserve to be treated in such a way?”

“What have we done,” cried the others,“that we deserve to be punished by you!”

“Well, I’ll tell you, said the devil, you did what I told you to.

You’ve lived the way I told you to liveand said all I told you to say;

And unfortunately, that is whyyour souls are lost today!”

But Satan you said we’d never be lostif we gave our lives to you,

“Of course I did, the devil sneered, what else was I to do!” And then he laughed an awful laugh that made his body shake;

And threw his head back on his shoulders And tears of joy streamed down his face.

But Satan, said one, “you said, ”I was too youngTo give up the pleasures of life,

You said I should wait and when I got oldI could give my heart to CHRIST”.

You told me, said the wealthy, “that I was too rich and I didn’t need God’s GRACE.

You said if I gave him all that I hadThen my wealth would go to waste”.

You told me, said the haughty, that “I wasToo proud to humble myself to CHRIST

You said I could do without Him and I didn’t Need Him in my life.”

I lied, said the devil and you were all fools,To heed my words and obey,

And indeed, I’ve been most cleverTo have blinded you in this way.

Why friends, you’ve been faithful; you endured to the end. You’ve labored hard in the ways of sin.

You hardened your heart and closed your eyesAnd shut your ears to the Word of God! You’ve worshipped me, is this not true?So as faithful servants, I must pay you.

You’ve finished your course, so I’ll carry you through,After all dear servant, that’s the least I can do!

And then he laughed an awful laugh that made his body shakeAnd threw his head back on his shouldersAs tears of joy streamed down his face!

But Satan you told us much too plain that this would never be!“Then you were fools, the devil sneered, to put your trust in me!”

And so I have deceived you and brought you this fate.At last you’re waking up, but now, t’s too late! For when CHRIST desired to save your soul,

You turned your back on Him And because you did, you cannot live,

For death is the price of sin!Mercy Satan mercy! came the million cries

But Satan laughed and simply said “Merciless am I. You had your chance, you made your choice;

You chose to live for meNow give me one good reason why I should set you free”.

But they cried still all the louderPlease have mercy on our souls, but Satan turned to

Answer and his voice was hard and cold. Why should my heart be softened and surrender to your cries,

When the Bible told you plainly that the soul that Sins shall die!

And then he laughed an awful laugh that made hisbody shake; and threw his head back on his shoulders

And tears of joy streamed down his face! But, they cried, “just give us time to fix our hearts

And to change our minds,” But he answered, “when you were called to bow,You wouldn’t take heed, It’s too late now”.

He laughed and laughed and his body shook; He laughed with all of his might,

For they struggled in vain to loose their chainsBut Satan had bound them tight!

They cried and they pleaded; they screamed and they moaned; They begged and they panicked, they shrieked and they groaned!

There was never a more heart breaking sound,Than the plead from the souls on the train HELL BOUND!

And I can see the devil grin

THE SPRING 2020 - SOLEMN ASSEMBLY

Every three months the Gospel Spreading Church of God conducts a Ten Day Fasting and Praying Revival. The most recent solemn assembly was enhanced by the addition of nineteen days which began on Sunday, March 22, 2020 and ended Sunday, April 19, 2020. In essence, the ten day fast has become a twenty-nine day fast. The Lord summoned the church to a longer period of fasting and prayer in light of the rapid spread of the corona virus. Through modern technology such as webinar and smart phones, Gospel Spreading Church members presently engage in the worship experience while sheltering in place. Praise God for His faithfulness. Fasting is a vital aspect of true worship. It is not a time for feasting, fun, pious acting, or bowing to one’s self to appear to be sanctimonious. Fasting is a serious time spent with the Lord. Fasting is a time to afflict the outer man (the flesh) while we earnestly seek to draw closer to the Lord. Fasting is a time when we desire to slay the carnal man in order to strengthen the inner man. In life we sometimes find ourselves in difficulties and recognize the fact that we need God to work out our situations. Problems are no strangers to us. Life’s situations are not always understood and may be very hard to unravel. In the Bible days when people of God found themselves facing insurmountable odds they called on God. For example, Queen Esther called the people to fasting and prayer (See Esther 4:16). The city of Nineveh was called to fasting and prayer (See Jonah 3:5). When the disciples were unable to cast the demons out of the child, Jesus informed them of the necessity of fasting and prayer. “Howbeit this kind goeth not out but by prayer and fasting” (St. Matthew 17:21). The procedure for corporate fasting and praying is outlined in Joel 2:15-17. In these worship services every detail is given. Everyone from the greatest to the smallest is to be accounted for. The people are gathered, the congregation is to be cleansed. The elders, children, nursing babies, bride, bridegroom, priests, ministers of the Lord are to be assembled. No one is left out. Just as the prophet Joel explains corporate prayer and fasting, the prophet Isaiah exhorts the church to fast individually. “Is not this the fast that I have chosen? to loose the bands of wickedness, to undo the heavy burdens, and to let the oppressed go free, and that ye break every yoke? Is it not to deal thy bread to the hungry, and that thou bring the poor that are cast out to thy house? when thou seest the naked, that thou cover him; and that thou hide not thyself from thine own flesh” (Isaiah 58:6,7)? Corporate and individual prayer and fasting are often major factors in true worship. We receive great things from the Lord when we obey His instructions regarding how to worship. “Then shall thy light break forth as the morning, and thine health shall spring forth speedily: and thy righteousness shall go before thee; the glory of the LORD shall be thy rereward” (Isaiah 58:8). Just as fasting and prayer were practices in the Old Testament, and the New Testament, they are important elements in worshiping God in this 21st century. Isaiah truly cried aloud and spared not and declared unto us what is the acceptable fast unto the Lord. We should not withhold good when we have such an opportunity. Jesus taught His followers how to conduct themselves when in prayer and fasting. He said, “But thou, when thou fastest, anoint thine head, and wash thy face; That thou appear not unto men to fast, but unto thy Father which is in secret: and thy Father, which seeth in secret, shall reward thee openly” (St. Matthew 6:17, 18). We also follow the exhortation found in I Timothy 2:1-4: “I EXHORT therefore, that, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks, be made for all men; For kings, and for all that are in authority; that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty. For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Savior; Who will have all men to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth.” In this regard, special prayers will be offered for the President of the United States, his staff, members of the U.S. Congress, and the Armed Forces. II Chronicles 7:14. It reads on this wise: “If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.” As a nation, and as individuals, we need to turn from our wicked ways. If this is done, God will heal our land. We are living in a time of trouble, such as never was since there has been a nation. However, we can always find comfort in the Scriptures. Psalm 84:11 informs us on this wise: “For the LORD God is a sun and shield: the LORD will give grace and glory: no good thing will he withhold from them that walk uprightly. Regardless of the circumstances, God will honor His Word, if we will obey Him to the letter. “For all the promises of God in him are yea, and in him Amen, unto the glory of God by us” (II Corinthians 1:20). Readers of HAPPY NEWS are invited to join us in this period of praying and fasting. “...The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much” (James 5:16b). If you are unable to attend these services, please join us in spirit. “God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth (St. John 4:24).

Signs of Christ’s Coming

St. Mark 13th Chapter, 3rd to 8th verses, inclusive: “And as he sat upon the mount of Olives over against the temple, Peter and James and John and Andrew asked him privately, Tell us, when shall these things be? and what shall be the sign when all these things shall be fulfilled? “And Jesus answering them began to say, Take heed lest any man deceive you: For many shall come in my name, saying, I am Christ; and shall deceive many. And when ye shall hear of wars and rumours of wars, be ye not troubled: for such things must needs be: but the end shall not be yet. For nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom: and there shall be earthquakes in divers places, and there shall be famines and troubles: these are the beginnings of sorrows.” 14th Verse to 37th, inclusive: “But when ye shall see the abomination of desolation, spoken of by Daniel the prophet, standing where it ought not, (let him that readeth understand,) then let them that be in Judaea flee to the mountains: And let him that is on the house top not go down into the house, neither enter therein, to take anything out of his house: And let him that is in the field not turn back again for to take up his garment. But woe to them that are with child, and to them that give suck in those days! “And pray ye that your flight be not in the winter. For in those days shall be affliction, such as

was not from the beginning of the creation which God created unto this time, neither shall be. “And except that the Lord had shortened those days, no flesh should be saved: but for the elect’s sake, whom he hath chosen, he hath shortened the days. And then if any man shall say to you, Lo, here is Christ; or, lo, he is there; believe him not: For false Christs and false prophets shall rise, and shall shew signs and wonders, to seduce, if it were possible, even the elect. But take ye heed: behold, I have foretold you all things. “But in those days, after that tribulation, the sun shall be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light. And the stars of heaven shall fall, and the

powers that are in heaven shall be shaken. And then shall they see the Son of man coming in the clouds with great power and glory. And then shall he send his angels, and shall gather together his elect from the four winds, from the uttermost part of the earth to the uttermost part of heaven. “Now learn a parable of the fig tree; When her branch is yet tender, and putteth forth leaves, ye know that summer is near: So ye in like manner, when ye shall see these things come to pass, know that it is nigh, even at the doors. Verily I say unto you, that this generation shall not pass, till all these things be done. “Heaven and earth shall pass away: but my words shall not pass away. But of that day and that hour knoweth no man, no, not the angels which are in heaven, neither the Son, but the Father. “Take ye heed, watch and pray: for ye know not when the time is. For the Son of man is as a man taking a far journey, who left his house, and gave authority to his servants, and to every man his work, and commanded the porter to watch. “Watch ye therefore: for ye know not when the master of the house cometh, at even, or at midnight, or at the cockcrowing, or in the morning: Lest coming suddenly he find you sleeping. And what I say unto you I say unto all, Watch.” May God open your eyes that you will receive these words.

When he laughs and say “Because you’ve sinnedYou shall die!”

Now the train moved on at an awful pace,As hot winds scorched their hands and face; When out of the distance arose such a yell

“OH LOOK!” cried the devil, “we’re now nearing HELL.”And then how the prisoners screamed in pain

And begged the devil to stop the train. Some peered out the window at the horrible sight,

For ahead in the distance, brisk smoke filled the night! And in their despair, some fell to their knees,

And begged the devil to set them free.Others knelt down and began to pray

But it was too late, for now they must payFor the work which they had done.“We’re almost there,” the devil said

And now in the distance they saw flames ahead. And they twisted and pulled and struggled in vain,

.For their hands were tied and their feet were chained!

The windows and doors were all shut fast,The people screamed and the devil laughed!

Some looked around and THERE WAS NO ESCAPE!So they covered their eyes and buried their face.

Women fainted and fell to the floor, for the horror of Hell was too much to ENDURE!

Satan out laughed each scream and out laughed each groan,He laughed louder than every plea and moan.He laughed louder than every useless appeal

For Satan was shrewd and he laughs even STILL! As The high, the low,

The rich and the poor were gone to hell….to return no more!!

“Many daughters have done virtuously, but thou excellest them all. …let her own works praise her… .” (Proverbs 31:29, 31b)

Janie Simpson - Newport News, VA

“But the fruit of the spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law” Galatians 5:22-23” This scripture is a perfect description of this woman of God we are honoring. She embodies the attributes of the fruit of the Spirit and exhibits them daily. We, the family, are blessed to be a part of such a great legacy. To her family she is known by her first name, Mom, and MeMa. To others she is known as Sister Janie Sapp Simpson.

This honoree does not compromise when it comes to the Word of God. If you ask her a question, be prepared to hear the truth. She has always been an example of a godly wife. She does everything in her power to make sure her husband is loved and well cared for. She has a special relationship with each of her children and grandangels. She has a loving practice of making us feel special in her own way. She has been known to pass special nuggets to us throughout our lives. For example: Always keep God on your schedule, a soft answer turns away wrath, Give God ten percent and give yourself ten percent, they talked about Jesus, so you know they are going to talk about you. These are just a few examples of the wisdom instilled in us by this precious woman of God. Many persons outside of our family unit have received nuggets of wisdom from her. She not only feeds you spiritually, but she feeds you physically. She always had guests staying in our home throughout our lives. She had an open-door policy to any of the saints who needed a place to stay during their visit to Virginia. She would wake up her children early Saturday morning with gospel music blasting, “Get up and clean your room. We Love You! We have guests coming”. Our Mom, Sister Janie Sapp Simpson, has truly blessed us and is a special jewel. It is always good to give honor where honor is due.

Leslie Warren - Hampton,VA

This honoree is a legacy member of the Gospel Spreading Church. She is the daughter of Sister Elizabeth (Lizzy) Jones Sample who was one of the first 150 charter/founding members thereby making her a child of the early church. She was reared under the powerful preaching and teaching of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. She was reared to conduct herself in an exemplary ladylike fashion. While in high school, she met her husband who joined the military after his graduation. He was an upper classman who waited patiently for her until she graduated to ask her hand in marriage. She graciously accepted after graduating and then began her journey as a military wife.

After her husband faithfully served his country as an Army musician, they settled in their home town of Newport News, Virginia. Looking for a home church, her husband became so impressed with the godly lifestyle of her mother, Sister Jones Sample, that he joined the Gospel Spreading Church. Our dear honoree followed her husband’s lead to walk hand in hand with him and Christ. Her husband, Brother Joseph Warren would go on to become an ordained deacon. His wife walked faithfully in her calling as deaconess extraordinaire.

Her adoration for her husband and service to the ministry, proved her to be a humble, wise and dedicated supporter and help mate. Our honoree became involved with the Willing Workers auxiliary, actively supporting sisters Ollie McRae and Alice Orie as they prepared Friday night dinners. This faithful saint was appointed leader to Family Group number six where she continues to serve. She sings in the choir and keeps a keen eye ensuring that the details of the ministry are met. She is one of the mothers of the Samaritan Gospel Choir.

This dedicated Saint takes remarkable interest in her dutiful care for church ministry. She works in the Newport News church office. She volunteers her time and talents to ensure the administrative needs of the ministry are met in a spirit of excellence. In addition, our honoree provides oversight in the monthly sacrament of communion.

Sister Leslie Warren’s life is proof that she adheres to the Word of God by faithfully trusting His promises and walking in His Word. Her allegiance is to her risen Savior, the King of Kings. She is a humble devoted servant - gracious in all things.

Just as her own mother left her a great godly legacy, she is a living godly legacy for her daughter Rosalind and her two grandchildren Larry and Nadia. Our unsung hero, Sister Leslie Warren, is a proven true servant as well as a testament of love and faithfulness in the kingdom of God. She was a devoted wife. She is a godly mother, and servant full of faith. She works diligently. She knows the goodness she receives is of God’s amazing grace. Her words are few. Her message to the Lord is, “God, I will wait on you.” When she lost her faithful companion after 62 joyous years, she continued faithfully in God’s service, as He wiped away her tears. Sister Warren is still singing, leading, and serving. Today we bestow on her an honor for which she is much deserving.

This Word of God requires knowledge of the Scriptures, meditating upon them, and then applying them to our lives in a practical way. Taken in context, this Scripture demands that each believer fully devote himself faithfully to the application of his God given work. After all, being a workman (or workwoman) involves work.

As our honoree often states, she was called to be a school teacher. This was her occupation for over 30 years. As an elementary school instructor, she taught students, parents, faculty, and staff about the goodness of God. This task was done through testimony, but emphasized through action. She is the embodiment of “seeing a sermon rather than hearing one”.

Her faithfulness and service have been made evident through her works in the church: Serving on the usher board, leading her family group, visiting the sick and shut-in saints (bringing food, fellowshipping, praying, singing, and laughing), writing notes and cards for all sorts of occasions just to let others know they are loved and thought of, teaching Sunday school, sending Sunday School books to shut-ins, serving meals (breakfast & dinner) as a Willing Worker, she participates in several prayer groups, preparing and reading various church papers, and then there are her travels. She will hop in her car and just go: church events and celebrations, birthdays, graduations, funerals, weddings, or just to spend time with some of the saints for no other reason than that it just occurred to her to do it.

She is involved in numerous kingdom related activities without fanfare. She is not looking for recognition or praise. This is the reason why our mom, Audrey Marie Morris, eldest daughter of the late Deacon Nathaniel and Deaconess Loumanda Moore is an Unsung Hero.

Stephanie Wiggins - Baltimore, MD

Humble, meek, beautiful inside and out, encouraging, woman of wisdom, virtuous, hardworking, resilient, headstrong, focused, determined, loving, happy, thoughtful, gracious, optimistic, hopeful. All of these words and more describe Sister Stephanie Jones. She comes to help us when no one else will. She sees when someone is hurting or needs help when so many others can’t see. She aids in secret. Her service is like a secret between her and God where she dares not tell anyone.

Her actions are love in every shape and form, her spirit is true and honest, never fake, never phony, but true and pure. She loves effortlessly and shines that love on everyone she sees, talks to, works with and encounters. If there were someone who did not know God, Jehovah Ezer, God our helper, they would get a glimpse of Him through the Holy Spirit within her as she carries out the work that so few are called to do.

Her love for people expands far beyond the confines of her family. Her heart for educating students who are in need of special education services is truly a serious need for the public school system of Maryland. We pray that all special educators share your clarity of purpose, creativity, work ethic and diligence to inspire children toward greatness, and to help them realize that even though they have barriers to overcome, with GOD nothing is impossible.

As her older, brother, my little sister would always want to follow me around. I remember one time when I told my friends how strong she was I tried to prove it by placing her at a high bar at about 18 months old to show she could hold on tightly. My mom was very upset, but the strength she showed that day is present in her life today as she continues to be the rock and strength in our family. My mother would take the girls to help with the saints that were up in age to ensure that they had food, help clean their homes and anything they needed that she could help with.

That mantle has been passed down to my sister, Stephanie; no one would ever know what she does to help someone unless they told it, for she helps without being asked.

As your sister, I see you as one of a kind. You are my early morning phone call I get when I am sitting playing my game. You ask me how my day was. You remind me of the strawberry pie I never get to eat because you ate it. (LOL) You are encouragement when things are going wrong saying, “look up and give it to God, He will work it out.”

You are such an important part of our family, Essential and Loved unconditionally. As we reflect on you at this moment, right now, we realize that there’s no way you would or ever could confine your love to just our family. Your Love Is Just That Big. Your ability to make every single person you encounter feel special… loved...! It is absolutely No Surprise to us, that you are being honored today, publicly by the Church of God as the Unsung Hero.

We love you so much and are so grateful to God that He saw fit to give us YOU.

Velma Green - Union Bridge, MD

As Pastor of the Union Bridge Church, I am often asked where I get my devotion to the Lord and energy. Well it is from the Lord, but also from my roots of which it gives me great honor to share the unsung hero from Union Bridge, my mother - Sister Velma Green.

Union Bridge has always been a small congregation with a large vision that has depended on a faithful BIG God to empower the faithful saints for His glory.

I struggled a bit in this selection due to those who might consider this as unfair nepotism but

• She is the daughter of founding members Nellie and Lauvere Owens

• She accepted Jesus as Lord and savor when she was a young adult and has served the Church in many capacities

o Youth organizer

o Children’s Day coordinator and mistress of ceremony

o Church secretary

o Willing worker

o VBS teacher

o Transportation coordinator

o Cross Choir member

To name a few

She also not only raised her 5 children with her late husband Deacon Marshall Green, but also served the community by becoming a foster parent touching over 100 families on both short term as well as long term basis. My parents were awarded Foster Parents of the Year, by the State of Maryland.

After retirement, from the Maryland Department of Social Services, she dove into a second career of helping the disadvantage population in Carroll County Maryland volunteering at Shepherd Staff a nondenominational Non-Profit. In her new position, she gained the freedom to not only help others but to share her hope of Glory and encourage others fallen on tough times that God loves them and is able to see them through.

Sister Green has been instrumental in gathering clothes, food, Christmas gifts, Easter baskets, school supplies and coats, not just for Union Bridge, but Baltimore and even the out reaches this weekend.

MEMORY VERSE

“ …I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live: And whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die. Believest thou this” (St. John 11: 25-26)? Do you know why we celebrate Easter? Do you know why Easter is so important? It is because Jesus died on the cross for the sins of mankind. He was buried, but arose from the dead after three days. Easter is the celebration of His resurrection. Because He lives, we—mankind—were reconciled to God (See Romans 5:10; II Corinthians 5:18; Colossians 1:20-21). Our reconciliation, then, involves the exercise of His grace and the forgiveness of our sin. The result of Jesus’ sacrifice is that our relationship has changed from enemy to friendship. “I no longer call you servants. Instead, I have called you friends” (See St. John 15:15). Now we are forgiven and have the peace that transcends all understanding (See Philippians 4:7). Through Christ, the Holy Spirit lives in us, and we are able to communicate with God through prayer.

Remember: “For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life” St. John 3:16.” Hallelujah!

THE LORD’S PRAYER

“…Our Father, which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen” (St. Matthew 6:9-13).

LET US PRAY THIS PRAYER AT NOON

“…Spare thy people, O LORD, and give not thine heritage to reproach, that the heathen should rule over them: wherefore should they say among the people, Where is their God” (Joel 2:17b)?

COMMANDMENT SECTION

“And walk in love, as Christ also hath loved us, and hath given himself for us an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweet smelling savour (Ephesians 5:2).”

Children respond to the question:What do you know about why we celebrate Easter?

Easter is a day that I like my Easter candy AND a day that Jesus rose. By London, Age 6Danbury

I know that Jesus died on the cross for us.

N’Dea, Age 7Baltimore Easter is the day for Jesus!

By Levell, Age 8Danbury We celebrate Easter so that we can remember that Jesus gave His life for us. We celebrate Easter because Jesus arose on the third day after He died on the cross.

Tsehai, Age 10Baltimore Jesus died on the cross, but came back to life again! That is why we celebrate Easter!

By Elijah, Age 10Hyattsville Easter is about God keeping His promise. God’s creation (man) had gotten himself in trouble that he could not get out of. Man did what God told him not to do and that is sin. He ate from the tree of knowledge of good and evil. God did not want us to know evil. That was the act of sin that got us into trouble. We could not get the sin off of us, so God sent Jesus. He came to die for our sin. He is our Savior. He came, suffered, and died for everyone’s sin. He arose from the dead. That is why we celebrate Easter!

Makari, Age 11Washington, D.C. Easter is about Jesus’ resurrection. He got up from the tomb. He came to earth on a mission for His Father. God needed someone to be Savior for everybody. When Adam and Eve got tricked in the Garden of Eden, we all got infected with a disease called sin. No one could get rid of it, so Jesus came and died to pay for our sin. God resurrected Jesus from the dead after three days. And that is why we celebrate Easter!

Esther Elliott - Philadelphia, PA

As her pastor, it gives me great pleasure to select Sister Esther Elliott as the Unsung Hero for the Philadelphia Church of God. Esther Elliott has been a member of the Philadelphia Church since she was 12 years old. She joined the church under the ministry of Elder James Russell. Esther Elliott has a rich legacy in the Philadelphia Church. She is the granddaughter of Deacon and Sister Joseph Foreman. The Foremans were among the founding members of the Radio Church of God. They joined the church in 1934 and Deacon Foreman was the first deacon appointed in the Philadelphia Church of God. As a matter of fact, Deacon Foreman actually found the church building where we worship today.

Sister Elliott, the daughter of Edith Glover who was the first church secretary, is a member of the third generation of her family in the Philadelphia Church. Her son John is the fourth generation and his son John, Jr. is the fifth generation of the founding Foreman family in the Philadelphia Church.

Esther Elliott has been very active in the church over the years from her childhood to this present day. She attended Sunday School and Purity Club as a child and teenager. She has been a member of the Senior Choir, the Young People’s Choir, the Camp Lightfoot staff, Cross Choir, and she serves as Dining Hall Coordinator. Anyone who has tasted her delicious food knows what a great chef she is. If I could select one Bible verse to describe her, that would be Ecclesiastes 9:10A:” Whatsoever thy hand findeth to do, do it with all thy might;…” I, therefore, select Sister Esther Elliott as our Unsung Hero because she really is! Congratulations Sister Esther and thank you for your selfless service!

Petheria Turner - Kinston, NC

LESSON 14 – April 5, 2020SUBJECT: The Lowly King

GOLDEN TEXT: “Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion; shout, O daughter of Jerusalem: behold, thy King cometh unto thee: he is just, and having salvation; lowly, and riding upon an ass, and upon a colt the foal of an ass” (Zechariah 9:9).

PRINTED SCRIPTURE TEXT: Zechariah 9:9 Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion; shout, O daughter of Jerusalem: behold, thy King cometh unto thee: he is just, and having salvation; lowly, and riding upon an ass, and upon a colt the foal of an ass.10 And I will cut off the chariot from Ephraim, and the horse from Jerusalem, and the battle bow shall be cut off: and he shall speak peace unto the heathen: and his dominion shall be from sea even to sea, and from the river even to the ends of the earth.11 As for thee also, by the blood of thy covenant I have sent forth thy prisoners out of the pit wherein is no water.12 Turn you to the strong hold, ye prisoners of hope: even to day do I declare that I will render double unto thee;13 When I have bent Judah for me, filled the bow with Ephraim, and raised up thy sons, O Zion, against thy sons, O Greece, and made thee as the sword of a mighty man.14 And the Lord shall be seen over them, and his arrow shall go forth as the lightning: and the Lord God shall blow the trumpet, and shall go with whirlwinds of the south.15 The Lord of hosts shall defend them; and they shall devour, and subdue with sling stones; and they shall drink, and make a noise as through wine; and they shall be filled like bowls, and as the corners of the altar.16 And the Lord their God shall save them in that day as the flock of his people: for they shall be as the stones of a crown, lifted up as an ensign upon his land.17 For how great is his goodness, and how great is his beauty! corn shall make the young men cheerful, and new wine the maids.

LESSON DISCUSSION

Zechariah the prophet prophesied the time when Jesus would enter Jerusalem riding on a colt. He described how people would rejoice at the arrival of their new king. This king would be just, meaning righteous, lowly, meaning humble, and bringing salvation with Him, meaning deliverance from sin (see Zachariah 9:9).

Zechariah also prophesied about Jesus’ second coming, and how He would descend from heaven and rule the entire earth (see verse 10). This prophet also foretold Israel’s restoration that would give hope to the Jews still in captivity (see verse 12). In addition, God also showed Zechariah how the Jews would rebel against Grecian culture and religion that the pagans would attempt to force on them. God would give them the victory (see verses 13 – 16). In fulfillment of God’s promises to Israel, they will enjoy an abundance of wealth in Christ’s kingdom to come (see verse 17).

In like manner, all who believe on this Lowly King who died on the cross for our sins, whether Jew or gentile, have a right to enjoy Christ’s new kingdom. Jesus said in St. John 10:10, “…I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.”

LESSON 15 – April 12, 2020SUBJECT: The One Revealed in Scripture (Easter)

GOLDEN TEXT: “And beginning at Moses and all the prophets, he expounded unto them in all the scriptures the things concerning himself” (St. Luke 24:27).

PRINTED SCRIPTURE TEXT: St. Luke 24:13 And, behold, two of them went that same day to a village called Emmaus, which was from Jerusalem about threescore furlongs.14 And they talked together of all these things which had happened.15 And it came to pass, that, while they communed together and reasoned, Jesus

himself drew near, and went with them.16 But their eyes were holden that they should not know him.17 And he said unto them, What manner of communications are these that ye have one to another, as ye walk, and are sad?18 And the one of them, whose name was Cleopas, answering said unto him, Art thou only a stranger in Jerusalem, and hast not known the things which are come to pass there in these days?19 And he said unto them, What things? And they said unto him, Concerning Jesus of Nazareth, which was a prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people:20 And how the chief priests and our rulers delivered him to be condemned to death, and have crucified him.21 But we trusted that it had been he which should have redeemed Israel: and beside all this, to day is the third day since these things were done.22 Yea, and certain women also of our company made us astonished, which were early at the sepulchre;23 And when they found not his body, they came, saying, that they had also seen a vision of angels, which said that he was alive.24 And certain of them which were with us went to the sepulchre, and found it even so as the women had said: but him they saw not.25 Then he said unto them, O fools, and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken:26 Ought not Christ to have suffered these things, and to enter into his glory?27 And beginning at Moses and all the prophets, he expounded unto them in all the scriptures the things concerning himself.30 And it came to pass, as he sat at meat with them, he took bread, and blessed it, and brake, and gave to them.31 And their eyes were opened, and they knew him; and he vanished out of their sight.32 And they said one to another, Did not our heart burn within us, while he talked with us by the way, and while he opened to us the scriptures?

LESSON DISCUSSION

On the third day following His crucifixion, Jesus arose from the dead and appeared to two disciples on their way to the village of Emmaus. As they travelled on the road the two discussed the happenings of the moment (see verses 13-14). As they talked, Jesus joined in behind them, but the two men could not recognize Him as the Christ (see verses 15-16).

As they walked, Jesus inquired about their sadness. The two men filled Him in on how Jesus was condemned to death, how the women at the sepulchre could not find His body, and how the angels claimed He was alive (see verses 17-24). Jesus rebuked the two men because they misunderstood the things that He should suffer before entering the glory of God (see verses 25-26). To clarify His point, He taught the two disciples in all of the Scriptures from Moses and all the prophets concerning Himself (see verse 27).

When the men arrived at their destination, they invited Jesus to stay with them since it was late in the day (see verse 29). When they sat down to eat, Jesus took the bread and blessed it. While He was breaking it, the two men realized Who He was. Then He vanished out of their sight (see verses 30-31). The two disciples found themselves encouraged by His revelation of the Scriptures to them.

The revelation of the Scriptures concerning Christ’s purpose towards man’s salvation is an excellent source of encouragement to us today. II Timothy 3:16,17: “All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works.”

LESSON 16 – April 19, 2020SUBJECT: Victory of the Lord’s Anointed

GOLDEN TEXT: “The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel together, against the Lord, and against his anointed, saying” (Psalm 2:2).

PRINTED SCRIPTURE TEXT: Psalm 2:1 Why do the heathen rage, and the people imagine a vain thing?2 The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel together, against the Lord, and against his anointed, saying.3 Let us break their bands asunder, and cast away their cords from us.4 He that sitteth in the heavens shall laugh: the Lord shall have them in derision.5 Then shall he speak unto them in his wrath, and vex them in his sore displeasure.6 Yet have I set my king upon my holy hill of Zion.7 I will declare the decree: the Lord hath said unto me, Thou art my Son; this day have I begotten thee.8 Ask of me, and I shall give thee the heathen for thine inheritance, and the

uttermost parts of the earth for thy possession.9 Thou shalt break them with a rod of iron; thou shalt dash them in pieces like a potter’s vessel.10 Be wise now therefore, O ye kings: be instructed, ye judges of the earth.11 Serve the Lord with fear, and rejoice with trembling.12 Kiss the Son, lest he be angry, and ye perish from the way, when his wrath is kindled but a little. Blessed are all they that put their trust in him.

LESSON DISCUSSION

The Psalmist focused on how kings and rulers rebelled against the authority of God and His anointed, namely, the Christ (see verse 2). God sits in heaven laughing at the situation, as their continued rebellion will bring serious consequences upon them (see verse 4-5).

God will, not only, bring judgment against those who rise up against His supremacy, but will also set up His King, Jesus, who will one day reign on David’s throne as ruler of the earth (see verses 6-8). At that point in time, He will rule in righteousness and peace. Also, the day of the wicked comes to an end. The Psalmist instructs kings and judges to surrender to the Supreme King with fear and great joy. To submit to His will is considered wise (see verses 10-12).

Even today, it is wise to serve the LORD and keep His commandments. Proverbs 1:7 states, “The fear of the L0RD is the beginning of knowledge: but fools despise wisdom and instruction.”

LESSON 17 – April 26, 2020SUBJECT: The Chief Cornerstone

GOLDEN TEXT: “The stone which the builders refused is become the head stone of the corner” (Psalm 118:22).

PRINTED SCRIPTURE TEXT: Psalm 118:14 The Lord is my strength and song, and is become my salvation.15 The voice of rejoicing and salvation is in the tabernacles of the righteous: the right hand of the Lord doeth valiantly.16 The right hand of the Lord is exalted: the right hand of the Lord doeth valiantly.17 I shall not die, but live, and declare the works of the Lord.18 The Lord hath chastened me sore: but he hath not given me over unto death.19 Open to me the gates of righteousness: I will go into them, and I will praise the Lord:20 This gate of the Lord, into which the righteous shall enter.21 I will praise thee: for thou hast heard me, and art become my salvation.22 The stone which the builders refused is become the head stone of the corner.23 This is the Lord’s doing; it is marvellous in our eyes.24 This is the day which the Lord hath made; we will rejoice and be glad in it.25 Save now, I beseech thee, O Lord: O Lord, I beseech thee, send now prosperity.26 Blessed be he that cometh in the name of the Lord: we have blessed you out of the house of the Lord.27 God is the Lord, which hath shewed us light: bind the sacrifice with cords, even unto the horns of the altar.28 Thou art my God, and I will praise thee: thou art my God, I will exalt thee.29 O give thanks unto the Lord; for he is good: for his mercy endureth for ever.

LESSON DISCUSSION

The Psalmist begins by recognizing the Lord as his strength, song and salvation. Because of the power of the Lord in the tabernacle of the righteous, the psalmist rejoiced in the Lord’s triumphant hand that delivered him. He would live to declare His wonderful works (see verses 14-17). The Psalmist refers to the “gates of righteousness” as the gates of the temple where the presence of God is revealed to the people and where the people can openly praise and worship the Lord (see verses 19-20). The psalmist praised the Lord for being his salvation, meaning, his spiritual deliverance from sin (see verse 21).

In biblical times, the cornerstone was a large stone on the corner of the building’s foundation that kept the other stones in alignment as the building was constructed. Without it, the walls would not be straight, and the angles of the corners would be out of synchronization. The psalmist used this illustration to identify the Messiah as the rejected stone that would be placed as the Chief Stone of the corner (see verse 22).

This plan of God caused much joy and gladness to those who believed on Him (see verses 23-24). For the wonderful way that God has brought light into the world, the psalmist lets us know that He (God) should receive sacrificial worship, praise and thanksgiving (see verses 27-29).

Today, Jesus continues to be the Chief Cornerstone in our lives. Without it, our paths would not be straight.

Hermena Gladden – New York, NY

Unsung Heroes lead from in front and from behind. They wonder for what contributions they area being honored? - They might inquire - Why was I picked? I’m not leading a family group, not singing in the choir, not on the usher board. I am just doing what I have seen modeled by my Mom and the saints. Their message has been: If you see a need, get in there and offer help. Look out for those who are struggling in their personal lives, or who need a friend. Share a laugh with someone, be a resource, witness to others about the saving power of God and the great legacy of the Gospel Spreading Church. There are people among us who perform these acts effortlessly. They seem to show up for every event, encourage the youth, seniors and whoever needs it. They take care of the children. They have a hardy laugh. They converse freely. These behaviors bespeak ministry of presence, which is defined as the gift of sincere support as in simply being there.

Ministers of presence are persons who can be counted on to show up when there is a spoken or unspoken need. In fact, persons who are part of this ministry are faithful in carrying out the legacy of the Gospel Spreading Church as demonstrated in commitment, loyalty and help. Sister Hermena Gladden, unsung hero of the NYC Church of God, has deep roots in the Gospel Spreading Church. Her mom, Sister Ada Gladden, was such a gifted musician that Elder Lightfoot Solomon Michaux frequently called on her to play the piano at events in Gospel Spreading Churches from Washington, D.C, to New York City which eventually became her home church.

The New York Church of God history is one of her favorite subjects. She speaks with pride of the great legacy of this branch of Zion.

This honoree was a swift, bold witness for Jesus Christ on her job. Because of her testimony and righteous life, some of her co-workers desired to know more about the God she served. Consequently, they followed her to the Church of God in New York City. There they accepted Christ as personal Savior and Lord, joined the church, built lasting relationships with God and remain GSC members today.

Sister Gladden showed new comers and those around her what it means to be saved, sanctified, committed, busy and abounding in the work of the kingdom. They saw her in praise and worship, in fasting and praying, serving at Camp Lightfoot, participating in GSC Convocations, the GSC Centennial Celebration, NYC Mother’s Day Observance, GSC Baptismal services, NYC Vacation Bible School and lending a helping hand wherever needed.

Furthermore, she seems to know numerous individuals from various GS churches from Kinston, North Carolina to New York City. We could often hear her deep voice and throaty laugh ring out in the crowd. She seemed to know many, many people by name as she lovingly greeted them.

To her family, she is a loving inspiration of hard-work. As a people person, she loves to talk and give her opinion.

There are a number of reasons why we consider her an unsung hero. 1. She does not broadcast what she does as she ministers.2. She reaches out to those in need. 3. She has a heart for children. 4. She seeks to get involved with people on a personal level to help

them navigate life. 5. She is in constant contact with those who have moved on to other

ministries and those who are currently out of fellowship with the Lord.

We are blessed to have our very own Hermena Gladden honored as an unsung hero. We thank The Gospel Spreading Church for recognizing her kingdom work.

Sara Martin - Richmond, VA “Favour is deceitful, and beauty is vain: but a woman that feareth the LORD, she shall be praised” (Proverbs 31:30). Faithfulness and commitment comprise a very rare attitude and mindset today. When the chips are down, and things look like they will not improve anytime soon, many individuals just give up their hope and move on to new and what some may claim better things. Sister Sara is not one of those people:

• During the time when the Richmond Church experienced a wandering period for a place to worship, Sister Sara stayed faithful.

• When the Richmond Church experienced low attendance in worship services, when you look at those who consistently came out, Sister Martin was always there.

• For over 30 plus years, Sister Sara has been a member of the Richmond Church. She was the First Lady of the Richmond Church for many years when her husband, Artos Martin, was pastor.

• Presently, she humbly and faithfully serves as secretary of the Richmond Gospel Spreading Church.

• She is a faithful and devoted wife to her husband.

• She is a support and loving mother to her children and grandchildren.
