Dear Parents,

I couldn’t be more proud of the teacher leadership that creates the excellent

Battle of the Books! The Battle of the Books is a fun and exciting reading competition for 3rd, 4th and 5th grade students that has been very successful in school districts throughout the state. Students participating in the program will be asked to read the current Sunshine State Young Reader's Award Program (SSYRA) books. In March, our school will hold grade level competitions where students will be asked to recall information about the plots, characters, authors and settings of the books. This competition is known as the Battle of the Books! One class will be declared the winner for their grade level. Each class will have five students selected to be on their class team. Students will be selected to be on their class team based on the following scores:

Rounds 1 & 2 - Students will participate in two battles during media resource classes in January/February.

Students will receive one point for each correct answer in these battles. (Students must correctly identify the SSYRA book used in a question or quote.)

Round 3 - The number of SSYRA books read will be added to their battle scores.

The five students with the highest scores will make up each class team.

In the event of a tie, AR test scores will be added to their score. Example: Round 1 (20 pts possible): Student Score from week 1 = 20 Round 2 (20 pts possible): Student Score from week 2 = 18 Round 3 (15 pts possible): Number of SSYRA Books read = 15 Student Score = 53

Please email Mr. Edeker if you have any questions about the upcoming Battle of the Books competition.

Viewing Student AR Points during the 2nd Semester Students are unable to see their AR points for the entire school year while in RenPlace (Accelerated

Reader).

Students must use AR HOME CONNECT (link on our Student Sites web page) to view AR points for

the entire school year. To see AR points for the entire school year:

Log in to AR Home Connect

Change the Current Marking Period to School Year

All students start over with zero AR points for the 2nd semester and must earn their grade level goal

for the 2nd semester.

Points earned in the 1st semester are still in the RenPlace AR database and will count for Principal for

the Day.

Grade level semester AR goals: K = 12 1st = 20 2nd = 30 3rd = 36 4th = 58 5th = 70

It’s Harvest Time for the 75 orange trees on PVPV/

Rawlings Elementary Campus. It’s Florida, so why not grow your

own oranges for the students? PVPV/Rawlings’ is the site of the

largest orange grove in northeast Florida. We started planting

orange trees thirteen years ago to simply provide fresh fruit for

our students. Our Dad’s Club, under the direction of Rick Parrish,

maintains the

trees

spending

time on

weekends

mulching,

fertilizing,

and pruning.

Last year we

were able to add a drip irrigation system to support our trees. Our

Student Council harvests the oranges as part of their service to our

school. The recent harvest produced thousands of oranges which are

offered to all students in our cafeteria at no cost…while supplies last. A

delicious snack and full of vitamin C, these oranges have become part of

a healthy tradition at PVPV/Rawlings.

Generosity and Stewardship “Those who are happiest are those who do the most for others.”

Booker T. Washington

Stewardship and generosity is a mindset of giving unconditionally without expectation

that you will benefit from the action.

When children shift their attention from themselves and focus on helping others by using their

unique talents and abilities, they find a greater joy, inspiration and satisfaction in their own life. Our students and families have just concluded an amazing feat of collecting almost 2,000 pounds of

food which was donated to Farm Share food bank. The children gave unconditionally, knowing it

would benefit those who struggle with having enough food for their families. This act of service

allowed our students to experience generosity and stewardship and knowing that their actions make

a difference.

Teaching your children about stewardship and generosity: With your thoughts and words. Positive thoughts are powerful. They drive our attitudes

and words toward others. Encourage positive thoughts with your children; they produce

uplifting words and a kind heart full of giving and sharing.

With Literature. Read books and biographies with your children about people who have

dedicated their lives to improving the lives of others. These stories encourage conversation

with our children about the value of stewardship.

With your actions. Look for ways to be helpful and kind throughout the day to make life

easier for others. Talk about these opportunities with your children and share the experiences

with them. Performing “random acts of kindness” toward others teaches your children

awareness of need, without expectations of reward for their actions.

“Everyone can be hurtful to others at

times. PVPV/Rawlings encourages each child

to use the Golden Rule when handling difficult

situations. If the situation causes the student to

feel unsafe, the student is encouraged to let an

adult know so that the problem can be

solved. It is always the student’s right to com-

plete a ‘suspecting bullying and harassment

reporting form’ found on our website or in the

front office. Each incident will be thoroughly

investigated.”

MEDIA RELEASE

DECEMBER 16, 2014

The St. Johns County School District is proud to announce that it has launched an app to provide easy access

to information and resources for parents and students. The app, MySJCSD, is free and currently available in

both the Apple iTunes Store and Google Play Store.

MySJCSD offers the ability to easily access information that is frequently visited on the school district’s

website including school menus, Home Access Center, volunteers, bus routes, school fees, CHARACTER

COUNTS!, and the St. Johns County Education Foundation. In addition, sections for parents contain links to

the Parent Resource Guide, Contests and Events, Zoning Information, the School Calendar and the Student

Code of Conduct. The student section contains access to Edmodo, Study Island and Discovery Education.

Content contained within the app will be expanded to accommodate additional resources as well as changes

and updates as feedback is received.

Push notifications from MySJCSD are available at the time of installation. The app can also be used to obtain

information that is communicated through the district’s Twitter account.

To download the app, go to the Apple iTunes or Google Play stores and search for MySJCSD or use the

following links:

CAFETERIA NEWS! Food Service Manager, Linda Baker, 547-8576

Help us go paperless with our Food Service Program! Did you know there are apps to monitor your child’s lunch account as well as our daily lunch

menu which includes the nutritional values? Please visit our web page in the lunchroom section

and click on PayPAMS. After you enroll your child, this site will send messages by email when

your child is getting low in their lunch account and it will also allow you to review your child’s

purchases. If you want to apply money to your child’s account, there is a fee of $2.00. You can

also send your child’s lunch money in with him/her to be added to his/her account and still be

part of the PayPams program. When a student account is overdrawn by the cost of two lunches,

we are required to provide the student with a cheese sandwich and milk. Our manager, Linda

Baker, will do her best to call parents when accounts are overdrawn. However, we need your

help keeping your child’s account current. Parents, please contact Mrs. Baker if you do NOT want your child to

1) buy breakfast, 2) buy an extra entrée, 3) buy a cookie ($.35 on Friday)

Linda also needs to know, in advance, if any adult is buying a school lunch.
