JUly EDITORletter from the

My favorite place on earth is surrounded by water: Cozumel, Mexico -- an island in the middle of the Caribbean ocean with phenomenal beaches, cuisine and people.

My first experience in Cozumel will always be the most memorable. I was a junior in high school and had decided to spend my Thanksgiving break giving back at an orphanage in Cozumel. About three weeks before we were scheduled to go to Cozumel, Hurricane Wilma hit the island and caused mass destruction and devastation. We almost didn‚t get to go on our trip because of the damage. However, the people of Cozumel couldn’t have needed us more.

When we arrived, very few people were on the island. Some of the houses where the children of the orphanage lived were damaged during the storm, as well as many of the shops, roads and parks that the locals used on a daily basis. We had to get to work quickly.

During my time there, I completely fell in love with the people and culture of Cozumel. Despite the circumstances, the natives were always very grateful and joyful. They opened their homes and their hearts to us. Although much of their lives were turned upside-down, they continued on the best that they could and started to rebuild their lives.

I remember leaving the tiny airport thinking that my heart would forever be in Cozumel. For five more Thanksgivings, I traveled to Cozumel to help with the orphanage. Year after year, the people of Cozumel began to rebuild their city and lives.

I’ve returned to Cozumel many times since the first time I arrived, but none of those trips will ever be as special. Seeing how the people rallied around one another and appreciated the true beauty of the island was just magical.

Cozumel is my favorite place on earth not because of the beautiful coral reefs or Aztec treasures, but because of the people.

Did you know that you can find natural, healthy exfoliants in your own home? Check out one of these four household commodities to get your skin looking beautiful and radiant. By Carolyn Williams
