Instead of the traditional welcome letter; the staff and I have compiled a list of our favorites for next year – think of it as fun recommendations from us on the inside. Del McCoury Band: Tribute to Bill MonroeComing from a country music family; (I sang in a 2nd generation family country band!), I am a traditional country fan at heart and this tribute to one of the greats by one of the greats is going to bring me back home.

Les Ballets Jazz de Montreal…To get the opportunity to bring European-style modern jazz dance to the South Sound is such a rarity I jumped at the chance. In the mold of Pina Bausch, this troupe will be sexy and strong.

Broadway’s Next Hit MusicalOn a lark I caught this group in New York last year in their home theater and laughed the entire performance. For them to improvise an entire Broadway style musical, including the music(!) based on audience titles is incredible and absolutely hilarious. No night is ever the same! Catch both shows…

Cameron CarpenterMr. Carpenter will play a traditional organ concert but with a virtuosity and flair to rival Hahn Bin last year. Expect the dust to get blown out of the pipes!

Seattle SymphonyWe have renewed our relationship with the SSO this year and are welcoming Ludovic Morlot, their new Music Director to The Center for the first time. Maestro Morlot is doing great work and the Symphony loves playing in our acoustically live hall. I plan on sitting in the balcony where the sound is the best as is floats up from the stage.

CircaThere are a lot of Cirque groups out there but this troupe has been smashing boundaries with their intense, personal work. They have come highly recommended from my fellow theater presenters across the country.

Los FolkloristasOn a tip from a friend in the world music scene, I looked up Los Folkloristas. Together for over 40 years, and one of the biggest proponents of Latin music, this band plays over 100 musical instruments reflecting the history of music of Central and South America, from pre-Columbian to modern.

Michael Childers, Author, AuthorIf you are into photography; this is the show for you. Michael Childers has been creating iconic images for over 40 years. Creator of over 200 magazine covers and over 150 album covers, Mr. Childers is touring a collection of portraits of famous authors that we will hang in the lobby gallery and on May 4, 2013 he will lecture on his photographic life and the collection.

Spectrum DanceI have been following Donald Byrd since he arrived at Spectrum Dance in 2002. A world renowned choreographer, Mr. Byrd is also an eloquent speaker and has served as a fellow at The Institute on the Arts and Civic Dialogue at Harvard. Passionate about the world, dance & people he is a joy to talk with. We will be doing a spring-long residency with Mr. Byrd and members of the troupe to talk about choreography and dance, culminating in a full performance May 18, 2013.

The Washington Center is excited to bring back the famed multiphonic singers of Tibet’s Drepung Loseling Monastery, who will perform their Sacred Music Sacred Dance for World Healing as the culmination of a week in Olympia creating a Sand Mandala at The Center. At the end of the performance on Sunday after ArtsWalk, the monks will destroy the Mandala and there will be a public procession to Percival Landing to give the sand to the sea to spread the message of peace and healing.

Enter Albert Yu-Min Lin, a National Geographic Emerging Explorer, and pioneer of the use of digital technology to “crowd-source” scientific discovery. His Valley of the Khans Project uses satellite imagery, ground-penetrating radar, and remote sensors to identify and investigate archaeological sites without disturbing them—thereby maintaining respect for local customs. Lin was honored as National Geographic Adventure magazine’s “2010 Readers’ Choice Adventurer of the Year” and is a fellow of the prestigious Explorers Club.

The Washington Center is proud to present its 17th consecutive year of presenting the world’s finest young concert musicians in association with Young Concert Artists, Inc. Each season we are thrilled to bring to the stage performers whose skills are already of the highest caliber early in their careers. It is a valuable opportunity to witness the virtuosity and continued development of young talent, but perhaps more importantly, the program allows us to offer a range of educational programs for students to learn directly from the next generation of great concert performers.

Young Concert Artists, Inc., was founded in 1961 to discover and launch the careers of extraordinary young musicians—a mission that has been achieved to a phenomenal and unprecedented degree. Many of today’s great performers started their careers with Young Concert Artists—Dawn Upshaw, Emanuel Ax, Eugenia Zukerman, the St. Lawrence String Quartet, the Tokyo String Quartet, Olympia’s internationally rising star Charlie Albright, and last season’s New Frontiers performer Christopher O’Riley.

MiXtJose Franch-Ballester, clarinet

& Robert Belinic, guitar A first for our 21st Century Master series – we are bringing back two previous artists now together as a duo.

Formed in 2011, MiXt is a versatile, dynamic, and vibrant chamber duo comprised of award-winning soloists on the Young Concert Artists roster. Performing in a variety of configurations, the duo consists of clarinetist José Franch-Ballester and guitarist Robert Belinic. These dazzling soloists and accomplished chamber musicians of diverse backgrounds entice audiences with engaging programs.

Veit Hertenstein, viola First Prize Winner of the 2011 Young Concert Artists International Auditions, violist Veit Hertenstein is one of the most exciting musicians on his instrument to emerge in years. He has already garnered recognition for his exciting stage presence and virtuoso artistry.

Charlie Albright, piano We are proud to bring our local prodigy back to Olympia! Winner of the prestigious 2010 Gilmore Young Artist Award and the 2009 Young Concert Artists International Auditions, pianist Charlie Albright made his Washington, DC and New York recital debuts to critical acclaim. Hailed as “among the most gifted musicians of his generation” by the Washington Post, he was praised for his “jaw-dropping technique and virtuosity meshed with a distinctive musicality” by the New York Times.

An internationally renowned repertory company, BJM has continued to grow with all the energy and spirit of exploration for which it has been known since its birth in 1972. BJM works today with some of the most prestigious figures in the world of dance and contemporary ballet. Allowing the full expression of each dancer’s identity is crucial to BJM’s distinctive style. These high level, eclectic artists perfectly represent the company’s spirit. Thanks to their unique personalities and the quality of their performances, they invariably captivate audiences and critics across the world.

Faced with the tensions and uncertainties in today’s world, BJM has chosen to remain faithful to an aesthetic form of dance which can also have an uplifting effect on the soul. This has earned it the title ‘feel good company’, often employed by both the public and the media. Displaying its radiant and expressive style, BJM explores the creative side of contemporary trends, yet is still firmly committed to classical aesthetics. Making a conscious effort to remain accessible, BJM brings to stage creations which speak to both neophytes and informed audiences.

The Washington Center prides itself on providing educational opportunities to enhance student learning. Our initiative – NEXT GENERATiON - consolidates our efforts.

We provide an education rental rate to qualifying groups, keeping our rental costs down so groups such as Olympia Junior Programs can bring in thousands of children and introduce them to the theater.

The Center provides several discounts in order to further arts education. This provides an affordable resource for students and educational groups who may otherwise not be able to attend performances. Students of all ages receive approximately a 10% discount to most WCPA shows. Youth tickets, for those 14 and younger, are half price for most shows, and this year we have added a special $5.00 youth price to several of our performances. Finally, on the day of each event we offer our 10 Buck Tix deal to students who come to the Center in person, with their student I.D. The Center often works with educational organizations to provide group discounts to classes and clubs. If you are interested in attending a performance as an educational group, feel free to give us a call.

The Center created the 21st Century Masters series, now in its 17th year, with the Young Concert Artists Association in New York and brings three budding young classical musicians each year to perform as part of our season. As part of their time in the South Sound, they conduct master classes at The Center, perform recitals in local area schools, and teach workshops with area young musicians.

We annually host “Pet the Instruments” in conjunction with the Student Orchestras of Greater Olympia (SOGO) during the Spring ArtsWalk, where kids and adults of all ages can come to the theater free of charge and see, touch, and play the instruments of their choice.

We have also worked with the Timberland Regional Library - a rural Library District servicing 7,000 square miles through 27 community libraries - where all our Washington Center Presents performances are researched by TRl and a quarterly Resource Guide created so students interested in a study guide of upcoming performances can find extended, thorough materials. Many student groups and classes center projects around a performance and this allows them to use the resources available through TRl to gain a greater understanding of an artist or a performance.

Having started in the UK back in 1999 Sing-a-long-a Sound of Music has now become a worldwide phenomenon, playing to packed houses across the globe! it even filled the Hollywood Bowl in los Angeles!

Let’s start at the very beginning (a very good place to start)…For those of you not yet converted, Sing-a-Long-a Sound of Music is a screening of the classic Julie Andrews musical in glorious, full-screen Technicolor, complete with subtitles so that the whole audience can sing along!

The fun-filled evening starts with a vocal warm-up led by your host for the night, who will also take you through your complimentary ‘magic moments pack’ containing various props to be used at strategic points throughout the show. Then of course there is the famous fancy-dress competition in which everyone who has come in costume is invited onto the stage to show off their fantastic tailoring skills. This exciting open-air staging of Aida in beautiful High-Definition performed at St. Margarethen took place amidst the intoxicating scenery of the rustically romantic Roman quarry. The Opera Festival St. Margarethen in Austria counts as one of Europe’s most important open-air festivals and over 200,000 opera lovers from all over the world visit it annually. The story of the forbidden love between the Egyptian leader Radames and the beautiful Ethiopian princess Aida was originally commissioned for the opening of the Cairo opera house, which formed part of the celebrations surrounding the opening of the Suez Canal in 1871. This is an opera of epic proportions with horses and elephants on stage.

The open-air production of the Verdi masterpiece Nabucco staged at St. Margarethen takes place amidst the intoxicating scenery of the rustically romantic Roman quarry, which provides a unique backdrop for this op-era. Nabucco tells the story of Nebuchadnezzar, ancient King of Babylon, who went mad after proclaiming himself God. It is one of the most popular works in the history of opera and was Giuseppe Verdi’s (1813-1901) break-through in 1842. The staging presented truly conforms to the spirit with more than 400 participants taking to the stage!

A fascinating production of La Traviata captured in HD at the Opera Festival St. Margarethen. Stage designer Manfred Waba sets the tragic story about the demi-mondaine Violetta Valéry and her admirer Alfredo Germont in an evocative replica of the Parisian Opéra Garnier. His and Robert Herzl’s unique interpretation is intelligent and effective. In the lead roles, Austria’s promising opera talent Kristiane Kaiser and Jean-François Borras, a French young tenor, provide for a musically and visually attractive performance.

De Mille and his experienced crew took great pains with the picture, interviewing reformatory inmates and officials, having young female staff members go behind bars disguised as convicted criminals to observe conditions, collecting hundreds of pamphlets and books dealing with atheism, and going over floor plans and diagrams of dozens of reformatories.

MYSterY oF the leaPInG FISh (1916) In this farce, nothing is sacred. Cops are lampooned. Drug addiction is comical, and our hero Coke is quite the addict. His complete and joyous de-pendence on these narcotics would even cause a real drug addict to take umbrage. He literally consumes mountains of cocaine, tins of opium and gives himself constant injections wherever he may be. In fact, he overcomes every situation with drugs, consuming them to increase his energies. However, Coke is a generous chap who loves to share. He also uses the drugs on his opponents to knock them silly - why not, it’s a very silly movie.

When the cloudS roll BY (1919) Remembered now for swashbuckling films like Robin Hood, Douglas Fairbanks first achieved fame in a string of wildly inventive romps. Here he stars as a super-stitious young man threatened by a scientist who’s out to drive him crazy. Wacky dream sequences and absurd plot twists build to a dam-busting finale in this everything-plus-the-kitchen-sink comedy including the extensive athletic stunts for which Fairbanks was famous. This slapstick farce stands among Fairbanks’ funniest films.

Born and raised in Hawai’i, Makana is an internationally acclaimed Slack Key guitarist, singer, composer, philosopher, activist and one of Hawaii’s cultural ambassadors to the world. He is considered the youngest authority on his art form and recognized as one of the top guitarists in the US (Guitar Player Magazine 2008). The NY Times calls him “A dynamic force within the style” of Slack Key and National Geographic Society says Makana is “charting a new sonic frontier with deep ties to tradition”.

He has performed in venues worldwide ranging from Tianjin Opera House in China to The White House, toured nationwide with Jason Mraz, opened for Sting, Santana & Elvis Costello, and released 6 records to date. They’re BACK! Join us during the long Legislative session for a political laugh.

The Capitol Steps began as a group of Senate staffers who set out to satirize the very people and places that employed them. The group was born in December, 1981 when some staffers for Senator Charles Percy were planning entertainment for a Christmas party. Their first idea was to stage a nativity play, but in the whole Congress they couldn’t find three wise men or a virgin. So, they decided to dig into the headlines of the day, and they created song parodies & skits which conveyed a special brand of satirical humor.

In the years that followed, many of the Steps ignored the conventional wisdom (“Don’t quit your day job!”), and although not all of the current members of the Steps are former Capitol Hill staffers, taken together the performers have worked in a total of eighteen Congressional offices and represent 62 years of collective House and Senate staff experience.

Based on Irish folklore, this classic tale of Good vs. Evil, expressed through the universal language of dance, has thrilled audiences worldwide and catapulted Irish dance to a new dimension and unprecedented worldwide acclaim.

As the story unfolds, the Little Spirit travels through time to help the Lord of the Dance protect his people from the challenge of Don Dorcha, the Dark Lord. As this evil dark power challenges the hero, the incredible adventure continues, drawing its audience into a mythical universe of love, danger, and desire.

From Brisbane, Australia comes a bold new vision of contemporary circus. A blending of bodies, light, sound and skills. A place where acrobatics and movement meld into a seamless whole and fundamentally redefine the nature of circus as spectacle. A celebration of the expressive possibilities of the human body at its extremes. Over 80 intense minutes, the performers move from highly connected acrobatic and tumbling sequences, through fast-paced intricate scenes to the hauntingly beautiful closing. Circa’s signature style is combining poetic physical beauty, extraordinary circus skills and an immersive use of sound, light and projection… to cause beauty. Where other companies tend to add elements (story, character) their work is a stripped back circus of the heart. it finds new emotional landscapes inside what is generally considered to be a spectacle.

Trey McIntyre Project

One of the hottest dance companies in the nation – Trey McIntyre moved his dance company to Boise, ID from New York and has become embraced as an example of art creating community. This will be their first visit to Olympia.

Trey McIntyre is one of the most sought after choreographers working today. Born in Wichita, KS, McIntyre has created a canon of more than 90 works for companies such as American Ballet Theatre, Stuttgart Ballet, Hubbard Street Dance Chicago, New York City Ballet and Ballet de Santiago (Chile).

in 2010 Mcintyre was named the United States Artists Wynn Fellow. He has received the Gold Medal of Lifetime Achievement from the National Society of Arts and Letters, two choreographic fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts, a Choo-San Goh Award for Choreography, and was named one of Dance Magazine’s “25 to Watch” New York Times critic Alastair Macauley said of McIntyre “there’s a fertility of invention and a modernity of spirit here that are all Mr. McIntyre’s own” and the Los Angeles Times said “...there is indeed such a thing as genuine 21st century ballet, and it belongs more to this guy from Wichita than any of the over-hyped pretenders from England, France or Russia.”



Seattle Men’s Chorus

A part of the largest community chorus in North America, the Seattle Men’s Chorus last visited the Center in 2010. This year they come back with the Music of ABBA!

Two things we just can’t get enough of: ABBA and Seattle Men’s Chorus! The music of ABBA bursts on to the stage as 100+ members of Seattle Men’s Chorus return with a show that will have you singing and dancing in the aisles as you are transported back to the 70s with classic songs such as “Waterloo,” “SOS,” “Mamma Mia”, “Money Money Money,” “Knowing Me Knowing You,” and of course “Dancing Queen!” Dennis Coleman, Artistic Director.

Los Folkloristas

Having celebrated their 45th anniversary season in 2011, Mexico’s “Los Folkloristas” continue their mission set in 1966 “to preserve and record the traditional music of Mexico and Latin America.” Carrying more than 100 instruments in their collection, and performing music from up to 15 different countries and pre-Columbian Mexico, a performance with this seven-member ensemble is like taking a musical journey through Latin America. As ambassadors of traditional Latin folk music, “Los Folkloristas” successes include the release of more than 30 albums world-wide.

Founding photographer for Andy Warhol’s Interview, Michael Childers has been taking photographs of art, dance and artists for over 40 years. For Dance magazine, he produced many covers including those featuring the Joffrey Ballet, The Royal Ballet, and the Alvin Ailey Dance Company as well as co-authored a book Bejart: The World of Dance.

From his Melrose Avenue and Venice Beach studios Childers photographed over 200 magazine covers including GQ, New York, TV Guide, Esquire, Los Angeles, Elle, Paris Match, Life, London Sunday Times Magazine, and both English and Italian Vogue. He created more than 150 album covers and film posters for major motion picture studios and worked as a special photographer on dozens of films including Grease, Marathon Man, The Year of Living Dangerously, Coal Miner’s Daughter, Pennies from Heaven, The Terminator, Hammett, Torch Song Trilogy, Endless Love, The Champ, and Oceans 12.

Co-produced with Timberland Regional library, Mr. Childers lecture at The Center will be in conjunction with a gallery exhibit of over 30 portraits of renowned authors.

Under Donald Byrd’s visionary artistic leadership since 2002, Spectrum Dance Theater has embarked on an exhilarating transformation that has attracted world-class dancers, produced some of the most avant-garde works in contemporary dance, and generated local and national praise.

The Center will be building a year-long ‘residency’ relationship with the company and Mr. Byrd directly; with several ‘Conversations with the Choreographer’ and dance master classes culminating with this performance.
