Fall Splendor Has ArrivedDear members, The crisp fall weather is here, and it is time to begin the process of ending our Club season for 2014—and what a season we have enjoyed! A Salute to the Volunteers Kudos to the volunteers from the Club! How does the work keep getting done? The answer is simple: by having a group of dedicated volunteers who are enthusiastic and willing to take on all the needed tasks. Here are a few names and duties that the volunteers have done for us: The Grounds: Gerald Benton and John Harvey, with help from many others, kept our grounds beautiful. Their hard work resulted inbeautiful upkeeping of the landscaping. The Kitchen: Pat Kiester and Kathy Astley provided menus and food preparation suggestions to our cook, resulting in tasty food and ample amounts. Brunch volunteers: the VanVleets. Tuesday night Bingo: Merry June Burwell Friday night callers and committee: Cherry Stone, Virginia Hullen, Marilyn Radney, and Judy Carruthers. Thursday Cards: Kathy Astley and Mary Haslam. The remodeling of our ladies restroom: Anne Budde, Joyce Hauck, and George Bliwernitz. What a lovely result has occurred from their hard work! The team who worked on the exterior porch: George Bliwernitz, George Young, and their helpers—also known as the “Crew.” The yard sale: Malena & Cecil Nichols, Bud Early, and their helpers. The card party: Malena & Cecil Nichols and helpers. The annual Labor Day Dance-Barbara Merkle. Neil Budde: for his usual effort and fine work on the Club directory. The Search Committee, headed by Dr. Bill Hartley, who put in time and effort to find a candidate for the 2015 Club season. Thanks to all the past Presidents who participated; Frank Costley, Betsy Stecher, Neil Budde, John Harvey, George Bliwernitz, and John Kearney. Our Facebook volunteer: Roger Thomas. Our website volunteer-Marie Seibel. Our wonderful Dr. Bill Stecher: for all his communication skills and for the Warbler. The July Fourth party: Mary Haslam and George Scanlon and their helpers. The many generous and thoughtful things people have done this year.Mary Haslam: for getting us a great popcorn machine to enjoy at our events. Those volunteers who helped with dedications for our members who are no longer with us. Those who volunteered to underwrite food costs for our events: Gordon Kiester and Mary Wheeler. All of you wonderful people who donated champagne and other libations for our brunches and events. Bill Lackey and Marilyn Young who bought the extra card tables for Club usage. Bud Early: he donated extra chairs and tables for Club use. Barbara & Bob Merkle: for planting lovely bushes to add to our landscaping. George Young and George Bliwernitz: they oversaw the needed evaluation of our well, and did much of the digging and removal and re-placement of grass and soil. And to all of you members on the Board and the committees: THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU To all you club members, from me, the current president: Thanks for all of your help for the past two years!. In closing of this article, if I have forgotten any one of you who has helped, please forgive me. And also in closing-a very special thanks to the following: Gwen Benton for her valuable respect and knowledge of the Club bylaws, and for assisting all members with understanding the intent of the bylaws. Malena Nichols for stepping up as vice-president for 2014. Bob Burwell for all your hard work on the budget, dues, bill paying, and accounting. Your reports are outstanding. Marie Seibel for always volunteering to make flyers and help with design and ideas for our events. Neil Budde, who stepped in and attended all the past two years’ Board meetings and gave me guidance and information from past years. Thanks to Bill Lackey, for helping with club rentals and assisting me with the work of keeping up with presidential duties. God bless you and thank you to Dr. Bill Stecher, who always is there for guidance and support and enthusiasm for the president, and who has never refused a request for help from this Club president. As the teenagers might say, VOLUNTEERS ROCK! DIRECTORY CHANGES

Our Jean Taliaferro’s son, Edmund Pendleton II “Penn,” 55, died peacefully at his home in Tampa on August 20. May his soul rest, and his relatives be comforted. Memorials may be sent to a charity of your choice.************************ After a long battle with chronic illness, Betty Rutherford died in FL on September 17. She and her husband, PK, were Club members for many years. We will sorely miss this gentle, compassionate, and lovely lady, and extend our deepest sympathy to her family.

In Memoriam It is October already, and the Winchester Creek Club season is ccoming to a close. There is a hint of fall weather, and the leaves are actually starting to change in some areas. What a great year we are experiencing at our wonderful Club in the mountains. Our members and guests are enjoying good food and wonderful fellowship. The recent pig roast was a big success, as was our October Kentucky Derby evening. The pool is closed now, but we had more members and guests using the pool this year than in the two previous years. All of the enjoyment and use of the club is mainly the hard work of our volunteers. IT IS ALL ABOUT THE VOLUNTEERS. THEY WORK HARD TO MAKE YOUR TIME AT THE CLUB ENJOYABLE. I ASK EACH MEMBER TO TAKE A MOMENT AND EITHER VERBALLY SAY “THANKS FOR ALL YOU DO FOR THE CLUB” TO A VOLUNTEER OR WRITE A NOTE OF THANKS. EVERY VOLUNTEER’S NAME IS IN OUR DIRECTORY. VOLUNTEERS ARE NOT PAID FOR THEIR EFFORT; WE NEED TO LET THEM KNOW THEY ARE APPRECIATED. This issue of the WARBLER is mainly dedicated to the volunteers. All aspects of Club activities are supported by the volunteers. Board members and all committee members spend many hours helping to keep the Club active. Planning and executing events, publishing the directory, writing and sending the Warbler, taking reservations and payment for meals, caring for the grounds, locking and keeping a watch over the pool, planning the menus—all are time- and energy-consuming, and our volunteers are always up to their tasks. The same faithful people are always there to welcome you as you attend an event. So many wonderful tasks are completed by volunteers, and so the list is endless. It is impossible to list all that is done by every individual volunteer, and so a huge word of thanks to all our volunteers. THANKS WCCC VOLUNTEERS! Maxene

HATS OFF TO YOU VOLUNTERS!

A beautiful eight-foot Crepe Myrtle tree, in memory of Marjorie O’Neal, was planted in front of the Club on August 29, by her dear friends, Dave & Marilyn Van Vleet and Pat Clager. The project wh-was supervised by me [WCCC Grounds Committee] and implemented by Roger Wright of Rainbow Nursery. With a little luck and some TLC, the tree will flourish and be a beautiful reminder of our wonderful friend Marjorie! John Harvey

SUNSHINE CORNER It’s been a busy season at WCCC for meeting new members and greeting old friends returning to enjoy friendships and great meals! We have welcomed back former members Dave and Linda Hughes, Rick and Suzanne Stello, and Jane Shinn-Flanders. New members to brighten Tuesday bingo and Friday parties have included Sharon Bowden Carol Randall, Eileen Krowicki, Martha Jane Tunno, Sam and Virginia Triassi. Julie Bru, and Suzy Izaguirre. We look forward to many more years of enjoying them. We understand that wedding bells have tolled for Jim Winston and Jeanne Bass—we all are so happy for them! Our sympathies go out to P K Rutherford in the death of his lovely wife, Betty. Her ready smile and willing spirit will always be remembered. We have missed seeing several long-time members who have been unable to get to the mountains this summer. We send you our greetings and thanks for your loyalty to the club even in your absence. Your commitment is an inspiration to all! Best wishes to everyone for safe travel and good health during the months to come. The winter will pass quickly, and we’ll soon be to-gether again as our Winchester Creek Family. Betsy Stecher

The beds have just been weeded and look fresh with new mulch. Also early this spring a new bed of flowers and shrubs were put in along the sidewalk at the front door and under the deck facing the pool. 100% if the work has been done by volunteers: John Harvey and Gerald Benton, Co-Chairs of the Landscape Committee, Mary-Phyllis Harvey, George Bliwernitz, Bob Merkle and his son John Merkle, Mary Haslam, George Scanlon, and Anne Budde. The club provided funds to buy materials, and John and Gerald provided their pick up truck and John Deere Gator to facilitate moving materials to and on the grounds.

Thanks to the Board and all Club members having regular membership status who exercised their rights regarding bylaw changes and additions at the recent special meeting. It was very heartening to have a quorum in order to take care of the necessary Club business. A copy of the special meeting minutes will be posted on the club bulletin board this week. All three proposed bylaw changes passed, as well as the addition of a new bylaw. Thanks also to Bob Burwell and Joyce Hauck who handled the counting and reporting. This has been a wonderful and busy year at the Club. We havecelebrated many happy times and enjoyed our club events with fellow members. But we must say farewell to some of our Club “family.” We have experienced some sad moments this past year because we have lost the company forever of Tom Edwards, Marjorie O’Neal, and Betty Rutherford.M What wonderful memories we have of these fine folks!

FIRST CLASS

Edwina Costley is coordinating another Thanksgiving meal at the Club on November 27 at 4 PM. She will cook the turkeys, and everyone brings a dish. We will charge $10 per person, but children under 12 are free. Please contact Edwina with your reservations by November 20. Over 30 people were in attendance last year, and it was such fun. The money raised will be paid to the Club. See you there!
