This Week’s Update Dear Parents and Caregivers,
Welcome back! I hope you had a great holiday. It was lovely to spend time
with my children with no rushing around. I always look forward to getting back
to school! Routine helps my family run much smoother. We are all looking
forward to a great term ahead.
Kids Unattended in Cars On a typical Australian summer day, the temperature inside a parked car can be as much as 30 degrees to 40 degrees hotter than the outside temperature. Imagine even on day of approximately 20 degrees, the temperature inside a closed car could be up to 60 degrees! According to health experts, one of the most dangerous factors during excessively hot weather is the addition of humidity. Children do not tolerate the heat as well as adults as their bodies generate more heat relative to their size than adults do. They also lose more fluids because they have a greater proportion of skin surface in relation to their size. Always ensure that children travelling in cars are not overheating and have adequate fluid intake. Leaving a child in a car can be extremely dangerous, so never leave children alone in a car.

Joseph Kim - Sydney North Primary Schools Swimming Age champion.
Congratulation to Joshua Kim who has been awarded Sydney North Primary
Schools Swimming Age champion. This competition comprises of 180
primary schools and 48,000 students. To achieve the award of age champion
is an outstanding achievement.
Joseph will be competing later this year in Tasmania for the national
competition. We wish him well.
Opportunity Class 2019
Opportunity classes cater for highly achieving Year 5 and Year 6 academically gifted students who may otherwise be without classmates at their own academic and social level. These classes help gifted and talented students to learn by grouping them with other gifted and talented students, teaching them in specialised ways and providing educational materials at the appropriate level. Parents normally apply when students are in Year 4. Students who are placed then attend the opportunity class full time in Years 5 and 6 at the primary school with an opportunity class. It is a two-year placement program. In the majority of cases, students who accept a place in an opportunity class will leave their current school to attend the school with an opportunity class. There is no provision to apply for Year 6 placement only

Walk safely to school day
Students safety is a shared concern and responsibility between home and
school. Walk safely to school day is Now in its 19th year. National Walk
Safely to School Day (WSTSD) is an annual event when all Primary School
children are encouraged to walk and commute safely to school. It is a Com-
munity Event seeking to promote Road Safety, Health, Public Transport and
the Environment.
Friday 18 May is Walk Safely to School Day, when we ask that we all con-
sider our transport habits and try to incorporate more walking as part of a
healthy, active way to get around. And although walking all the way to school
isn’t realistic for many of us, it’s quite easy to figure out how you can build a
walk into your family’s daily routine. It’s time to plan your own walk to school
day journey.
PEDESTRIAN SAFETY MESSAGES

Children up to ten years old should be actively supervised in the traffic envi-ronment and should hold an adult's hand when crossing the road

STEMsational Learning! In term 1, Kindergarten engineered a safe seat to stop Humpty Dumpty falling off the wall. They researched existing safe seat designs using shopping catalogues
and brainstormed a range of possible solutions. Students justified their final design choice, then with much excitement, constructed their seat for Humpty! They tested their idea and reflected on the safety of their seat. An EGGS-ellent effort from our
youngest creative and critical thinkers!

have 15 minutes to select and pay for their gift and have it gift wrapped.
As well as being a fun and convenient shopping opportunity for the children, the MDFDGG have raised significant funds and provided some notable additions to school facilities over
the last few years. The children love it and take their shopping very seriously!
The MDFDGG stall website is now live - http://twpsmdfd.com/
The website features photographs, prices and quantities of gifts that will be available at the
stall. We have also incorporated a wish list function. No items are over $10.

Money
Carry Bag or Plastic Bag clearly marked with your child’s name on it
Wish List / Shopping List
Note: Over the counter sales at the canteen will not happen on the day of the mother's
day stall, to ensure that our shoppers shop for their Mum's ;)
Call out for Volunteers.
With close to 600 students at the school these events cannot run successfully without the continued support and help of our school families. Refreshments will be provided
throughout the day. Come for an hour or stay for the day!

Library News Term 1 was a very busy term, with the library
undergoing some exciting changes. Our dated mini lab
will be converted into two small study spaces that can be
used by teachers and students in library lessons. This is
will enable users to have a flexible learning space using
wireless technology. The partitioned wall in the old
computer Lab is being removed so our library space will
be bigger and more accommodating the student’s needs.
