Flip over your worksheet:

Quick Write: Choose three of these questions to answer on the back of your worksheet.

1) Why were maps made during the Middle Ages inaccurate?

2) If you were on a sea voyage, how would an astrolabe help you navigate?

3) How did early explorers contribute to the success of such explorers as Dias?

4) Why was the voyage of Dias an important step in Portugal’s plan to reach India?

5) How do you think Magellan's voyage helped lessen similar hardships on future long ocean voyages?

Important things to remember:

* Inventions like the compass from China and the astrolabe, which determined a ships north-south position, enabled explores to navigate the oceans.

* Bartholomeu Dias was a great Portuguese explorer who sailed to the southern most tip of Africa and discovered the Cape of Good Hope. * Portuguese explorer Vasco da Gama sailed past the Cape of Good Hope and charted a round trip journey from Europe to India which opened up the world for exploration.

Only 18 out of the original 250 crew members made it back to Europe. The journey took three years to complete.

Would you be willing to make a journey like that?

Page 25: The Voyages of Discovery How did advances in technology spur new voyages of discovery?

Out of all of these voyages of discovery, which one do you think was the most important and why? (Use evidence from the textbook and video guide to support your decision).

Understanding the Earth has been a central part of human science. In the case of exploration it helps travelers determine the distance that they must travel and the time it will take them to get to a destination.

1) What instruments and technology do you believe modern scientists use to study the Earth?

2) What do you believe would have been different in our world today if Christopher Columbus had not made his journey to the Americas?

Homework:

Bartholomeu Dias

Bartholomeu Dias sailed from Portugal down around the tip of Africa now known as the Cape of Good Hope.

The Birth of Cartography

What is cartography and how do you think it assisted early explorers?

Page 29: The Voyages of Discovery How did advances in technology spur new voyages of discovery?

The Birth of Cartography

* Maps during the Middle ages were inaccurate and only showed three continents.

* During the Renaissance map makers created more accurate maps.

Page 30: The Voyages of Discovery How did advances in technology spur new voyages of discovery?

Advances in Navigation

Does anyone recognize this? How do you think this helped early navigators?

Page 31: The Voyages of Discovery How did advances in technology spur new voyages of discovery?

Advances in Navigation

* Early explorers used the compass, which was invented in China.

* They used the astrolabe - it found the ships's north-south position based on measurements of the stars.

* With these inventions sailors could navigate without reference to land.

The Shipbuilding Revolution

Why did early civilizations put so much effort into building sea going ships?

Page 33: The Voyages of Discovery How did advances in technology spur new voyages of discovery?

The Shipbuilding Revolution

* European shipbuilders built two types of ships:

1) Caravel: a small narrow ship with two or three masts and triangular sails.

2) Galleon: A large, fast ship with three masts - used to carry trade goods and treasure.

The Portuguese Sail East

Bartholomeu Dias Vasco da Gama

Why do you think the Portuguese were the first to take large sea voyages?

Page 35: The Voyages of Discovery How did advances in technology spur new voyages of discovery?

The Portuguese Sail East

* Bartholomeu Dias - First Portuguese captain to sail to the Cape of Good Hope (South tip of Africa).

* Vasco da Gama - Sailed past the Cape of Good Hope to India. Charted round trip journey from Europe to Asia.

Columbus & Vespucci

Columbus Vespucci

What do you already know about Columbus?

Page 37: The Voyages of Discovery How did advances in technology spur new voyages of discovery?

Columbus & Vespucci

* Columbus - backed by Spanish rulers sets sail in 1492.

* He crossed the Atlantic and believed he had found a gateway to Asia.

* Vespucci concluded that Columbus actually found "The Indies" and that they were part of the "New World."

* A German map maker named the newly discovered lands America - Latin for Amerigo (Vespucci's first name).

Magellan’s Crew Circles the World

What does it mean to circumnavigate? And how long do you think it would take for an early explorer to circle thew world?

Page 39: The Voyages of Discovery How did advances in technology spur new voyages of discovery?

Magellan’s Crew Circles the World

* Magellan wanted to find a westward route to Asia and knew that there was a continent in the way.

* He crossed Pacific Ocean and he claimed the Philippine Islands for Spain.

* He started off with 250 crewmen, he sailed for three years, and ended up with only 18 crewmen.

* Magellan died in a battle with islanders.

Voyages of Discovery (Video): 1) During 1487 - 1522 what countries set out to discover other parts of the world?

2) Who did the Portuguese bring back with them from their explorations in 1441?

3) Why was the exploration of the Western coast of Africa important?

4) What wasn't known by the 1400s and who did the Portuguese send to find it out?

5) What was finally discovered about the continent of Africa?

6) What did King John II name the tip of Africa that was discovered by Dias?
