2013 Christmas Party
Thanks to everyone who came out
and had a great time at the Christmas
party on December 16! Athletes,
parents, caregivers and volunteers
enjoyed a turkey dinner, prizes and
dancing at the party which was held in
the lovely Jewel Ballroom.
Throughout the evening, several
athletes and volunteers gave some
great speeches to recognize this year's
accomplishments.
Every athlete at the party received
gifts from Santa while enjoying their
turkey dinner and tasty desserts.
After dinner the band Retro Active
opened the dance floor with some
favourite classic tunes. Everyone had
a great time dancing and celebrating
well into the evening.
Special thanks to the SOBC Vancouver
volunteers and event coordinators
who helped make the night a success,
and to the Jewel Ballroom staff for
hosting us.
Thank You to our Sponsors! SOBC Vancouver is very grateful to have
received so many generous gifts from
donors over the holiday season!

SOBC Vancouver Celebrates 30
Years! Thirty years ago, advocates for people with
intellectual disabilities teamed up with
Special Olympics BC to create the
Vancouver local that exists today!
With over 237 athletes, 30 programs, and
23 locations, the Vancouver local is strong
and growing. Demand continues to expand
for Special Olympics programs as our
communities continue to grow.
In recognition of our 30 year anniversary,
SOBC-Vancouver is especially thankful to
the over 150 volunteers that help make
these programs so successful.
In addition, SOBC-Vancouver continues to
be inspired by the dedication and
commitment of our Special Olympics
Athletes. Many have been involved with the
Vancouver local for over 20 years. This 30
year anniversary is also evidence of the
athletes' commitment and continued
participation in competitive sporting
events.
Congratulations on 30 great years,
Vancouver athletes and volunteers! We
know you'll continue to make us proud, and
we wish you all the best in the year ahead!
What are your goals for
improving your health &
fitness this year?

Coaches Meeting
Last November the SOBC-Vancouver
coaches attended their annual
meeting. The coaches had the
chance to mingle and get to know
one another better. Speakers gave
presentations on some interesting
subjects and everyone went away
with new information and tips for
coaching SOBC athletes.
Thanks to all our coaches for their
hard work and dedication!

Photo: Floor hockey 'C level'
I have competed in 2 provincial summer games and 1 national summer games and have won several medals. I think that my favourite sport is power lifting because I enjoy trying to achieve my personal best. During the day, I work part-time at a drop-in daycare and live with my mom. At the end of February 2014, I will be competing in a power lifting competition at the Richmond Oval. I have made tons of friends in Special Olympics and some of the people that I enjoy hanging out with are: Nellie-Joe, Robyn, Corey, Alison, Kerry and Sheryl (all special Olympics athletes).

SOBC-Vancouver Program
Coordinator, Jenny Wong
Hi everyone! Not too many people
know but I originally applied for an
administrative position with SOBC -
Vancouver but got convinced into
coaching! It was one of the best
decisions I have ever made. I started
in 2012 as one of the soccer and
hockey coaches. I also took on the
role as one of the Program
Coordinators since summer 2013.
Thank you to all the athletes,
parents, caretakers, coaches and
volunteers for inspiring me and
keeping me motivated to show up at
practices even after a long day at
work. I love meeting and getting to
know the athletes. Having the
opportunity to watch them grow is
very rewarding.

Stay Active All Winter Cold weather means staying inside and keeping warm, but it's important to keep
up with healthy habits in every season. Here are some tips for staying active and
healthy during the winter months:
1. Take the stairs instead of the elevator
2. Join an indoor sport: From floor hockey to weight training, there's plenty of
indoor sports to keep you active while staying warm
3. Try an outdoor winter sport: Skiing, snow shoeing and ice skating are fun ways
to enjoy the great outdoors throughout the colder months
4. Workout at home: Even if the cold weather keeps you at home, try an exercise
DVD or book and schedule some exercise without venturing outdoors
5. Get off the couch: Work fitness into your TV time! Get up and stretch or do
short bursts of cardio during commercials
Volunteer with SOBC-
Vancouver!
SOBC-Vancouver is looking for
volunteers to help support our
athletes in the community. If you like
working with people, and are able to
consistently help out at one of our
events, we would love to hear from
you!
SOBC-Vancouver has over 30
different programs throughout the
year, implemented at 23 different
locations throughout the City of
Vancouver. We are looking for
enthusiastic coaches and support
volunteers at many of our programs,
as well as qualified individuals to join
our executive team.
