My Dear Catholic Daughters, Pope Francis has given us a wonderful blessing in declaring this year an extraordinary Jubilee Year, a Year of Mercy. In so doing he said: “At times we are called to gaze even more attentively on mercy so that we may become a more effective sign of the Father’s action in our lives.” With all that is going on in the world, Pope Francis has discerned that the time is now for us to look more attentively to God for mercy. What are we looking for when we seek to gaze more intently on mercy? What is God’s mercy? The First Letter of John tells us “God is love” (1 Jn. 4:16) and St. Paul reminds us that God is “rich in mercy” (Eph. 2:4). Jesus teaches us and shows us that God’s mercy is “love that is manifested with particular force with regard to the suffering, the unfortunate and sinners.” It is this focused and directed love for the suffering, the unfortunate and the sinner that we call mercy. This specifically focused and directed love/mercy “makes present and thus more fully reveals the Father, who is God `rich in mercy.’” (St. John Paul II) Pope Francis reminds us that Jesus “is the face of the Father’s mercy.” He lived God’s love/mercy for us and called his followers to live as he lived. The disciples understood that living as Jesus taught was more than just fulfilling a command. They understood that being merciful in this world - as God is merciful - provides for others something necessary for God to reach them. “Blessed are the merciful…for they shall obtain mercy” for they have helped others know God. How will you respond to the invitation to “gaze more attentively on mercy” this year? May I suggest that we each look inward and then look outward. Look inward - spend some time each week finding areas in our own lives where we stand in need to God’s mercy, identifying where and how we appear to God as someone suffering, unfortunate, a sinner. Having found this place, we can then ask for mercy and God, who is rich in mercy, will reveal himself to us. Celebrate the Sacrament of Reconciliation where God pours out his mercy to us. And look outward – find each week someone who is suffering, unfortunate, a sinner and extend the hand of mercy in a kind word or act; knowing, as did those first disciples, that you provide an opportunity for them to know God. This Year of Mercy, may we learn to imitate Jesus more perfectly and so help others to know God who is love and so be blessed ourselves, the blessed merciful who obtain mercy.

Dear Minnesota Sisters in Catholic Daughters, I can’t believe how time is flying by. We will soon be in the season of Lent. May yours be one of great Spiritual Renewal. Plan to spend some extra time each day with our Lord and plan some special prayer services, and/or days of Retreat for your Court during this Lenten season. In April, your nominating committees will be selecting a slate of officers to serve your court for the next two years. Please say yes if they call and ask you to serve. Serving as an officer in your court is an honor and allows you many opportunities to work more closely with the members of your court and your State Officers. The District Deputy and the State Officers are always there to help you if you have questions. Thank you to all of the outgoing Local Court Officers for all of your service to CDA. It is greatly appreciated. The National Convention will be held July 20-24th in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania at the Wyndham Hotel, Downtown. Plan to come early for tours and especially for the workshops on Tuesday afternoon. There will also be workshops during lunchtime this year so do take advantage of as many of these educational opportunities as possible. Our own Bishop Donald Kettler, Bishop of St. Cloud, will celebrate the opening Mass. I hope to see many of you at the convention. Courts, do your best to help your members going to the convention with the expenses of the convention. Maybe hold a fundraiser to help pay the expenses. Having members go to convention will benefit everyone as they come back to your court with new ideas and renewed energy for CDA. I hope your courts are continuing to strive to increase our membership by having a membership drive and reception of new members at least once a year. Members can also be brought into the court at any meeting by having them say the membership pledge and then have them attend the next formal reception. It is not too late to institute new courts in Minnesota during this term. We are long overdue. It would be great if we could meet the membership goal of five new courts in the state. Is there a parish near you that doesn’t have a Catholic Daughters court? We have priest’s packets available for you to take to visit the priest so that he can learn what Catholic Daughters do and will want Catholic Daughters in his parish. Just let me know, and we will send you a priest’s packet or visit the parish. By now I am sure you have heard the great news of our new court in Kenya in East Africa. We are extremely excited about this new court. Thank you to everyone who has donated to the bus and tractor for the court and chaplain. If anyone has not had an opportunity to donate to this very worthwhile cause, you may still send your check made out to Catholic Daughters of the Americas with Kenya in the “for” line. Send the check to me so that I can record it. I will be signing a card with everyone’s name that contributes. This includes both courts and individuals. I will then forward the checks to our National office. All of the money collected will be given to Father to purchase the bus and tractor. Send the checks to me at: Shirley Seyfried 38482 N. Shore Dr. Battle Lake, MN 56515. Thank you very much. Thank you for all you do in CDA. Have a very Blessed and Happy Easter. Peace and God bless, Shirley Seyfried, National Regent and MN State Supervisor

“Whatever you do for the least of my brethren, you do for me.”

THREE COURTS REMEMBER SISTERS

It is a tradition for the area Catholic Daughters to hold a Mass for their deceased members each November. Masses have been held in Lismore, Wilmont, and Adrian. This year, the three courts joined together in Unity and Charity (just as they did when they hosted the State Convention) and celebrated with one Mass, which was held at St. Adrian on Thursday, Nov. 19th. Members from Court St. Bernard #886 of Lismore, Ct. Madonna #839, and host Court Santa Maria #247 gathered to recite the names, pray for, and remember their sisters who have gone from this world. Refreshments were served following the service. Thanks to the Chaplain of the three courts, Fr. Andrew Beerman, for celebrating this special Mass with the Catholic Daughters. Pictured are the Regents of the three courts, Lisa Diekmann, Carol Bertrand and Pam Konz.

CT. ST. MARGARET HAPPENINGS

Ct. St. Margaret #1888 of Eveleth started off their new year by celebrating new babies. The parish communities of Resurrection of Eveleth and St. Joseph of Gilbert supply much needed essentials for families in need and their newborns. "Options for Women-Iron Range", with centers in Hibbing and Virginia, give suggestions according to needed items. Pastel tags shaped like baby items are hung on a tree branch and selected by parishioners. Seven years later, this baby shower remains extremely successful.

With Lent quickly approaching, a Wednesday evening soup supper will be offered to the religion classes and adults who attend Stations of the Cross. Homemade bread is a special treat that is provided by one of our members. The spring salad luncheon will take place in April.

WASECA PARISH SHOWERED WITH KITCHEN MAKEOVER Court Sacred Heart #1424 held a “Kitchen Shower” for the Parish Center Kitchen. CDA member Geralyn Kassel spearheaded the project and organized volunteers to clean cabinets and inventory dishes and food prep items. The need was realized for utensils, linens, cookware, etc. A kitchen shower was held much like a bridal shower with a registry list at a local Target store. Parish members were invited to shop from the registry or donate cash or gift cards to replenish the items. Geralyn presented this project to the local Knights of Columbus and an anonymous donation was made in the form of a new refrigerator, dishwasher, stove, and range hood. She also organized volunteers to clean and paint the kitchen and adjoining dining room walls.

SLAYTON AREA HOLDS MEMORIAL MASS Each year the Knights of Columbus and the southwest area Catholic Daughters remember the deceased of their organizations with a Memorial Mass. The Catholic Daughters remembered this year from Court Queen of Peace #1558 of Slayton were Ella Mae Anderson, Cleota Platt, Rosemary Carlson, and LaVerne Scully; from Court Theresa #973 of Currie was Pat Pattinson; and from Court Little Flower #854 of Iona were Leona Kramer, Dora Biegler, and MaryAnn (Babe) Mcormick. Pictured are Joan DeGreeff, Marlys Knuth, and Clint Burt.

A “BEARY” GOOD YEAR

As promised in the last issue of Voice of the Lakes, here’s a breakdown of the 2015 Gummi Bear campaign. Thanks to chairman Carol Bertrand for providing the following information. 791 boxes were ordered (@$4.40 each). Each box contained a dozen packages (@.37 each), so we had 9492 packages of Gummi Bears. Inside each package were 20 little bears (@ .02 each) =189,840 individual Gummi Bears. Even though the number of boxes ordered was down a bit, we made more money! Total funds raised were $15,274.85, which was $835.12 more than in 2014. Carol was thankful for the input she received and has shared that with the State Board to see if changes can be made for next year. The State Board has been in touch with the candy company and the bags next year will not have prices on them and will have more of a CDA label. Thanks, to all for a “BEARY” good effort for Habitat for Humanity!!

JOINT CHRISTMAS CELEBRATION IN CROOKSTON Court Bishop Schenk #2010 and the Crookston Council of the Knights of Columbus joined together for a first time event to celebrate Christmas this year. All enjoyed a catered meal of country style ribs with all the trimmings. CDA members provided Christmas treats for dessert. The guest speakers were the KC’s State Chaplain, Fr. Raul Perez-Cobo and our State Regent, Margee Keller. A special guest included State CDA Chaplain, Bishop Michael Hoeppner. Christmas carols were sung and many received door prizes.

2016  National  Convention:  July  20-24,  2016  Pittsburg, PA

See the winter issue of the SHARE magazine for more information.

Attn: Convention Attendees The MN State Board will have two shirt options to be ordered. More details are forthcoming.

CT. ST. PETER’S ACTIVITIES Regent Eileen Attenberger is shown lighting one of the four candles at the Mass for deceased members of Ct. St. Peter #1601.

"Mrs. Claus" (Regent Eileen) distributed candy canes during the Christmas potluck-December meeting. Led by members of their church choir, Christmas carols were sung. All had a good time and, of course, the food was fantastic!

Congratulations to State Regent Margee Keller who has officially retired from her job as Vice President at Crookston National Bank in Crookston, MN. Now before you think Margee will be sleeping in every day and having coffee parties every afternoon, remember that she still has many irons in the fire. As State Legislative Chairman of the American Legion Auxiliary, Margee recently traveled to Washington, DC for a conference. Margee is serving as Vice Regent of her local court, Ct. Bishop Schenk #2010 and will be finalizing plans for the State CDA convention in 2017. She is also very active in her community. Margee plans to do some financial work/consulting as needed and will no doubt spend a lot of time with her grandchildren, Jennika and Jordy. We wish you well, Margee, as you enter the next chapter of your life and continue to lead our State Board!

I recently received a note from my cousin who lives in Australia in which she used the phrase ‘it worked a treat’. What? My cousin was born and raised in the U.S., speaking English, but what did she mean by this unusual phrase? I ‘googled’ it and found that to ‘work a treat’ is a British and Australian phrase meaning that something works well or is very effective. Who knew?

Language is an amazing thing! ‘Bonjour, hola, hej, salut, ciao, aloha, hau, god dag, shalom, kon’nichiwa’ – although some of these words or phrases may be familiar to us, others could leave us with a blank look on our faces. These are all ways to say hello in other languages. But what of saying ‘hello’ to someone in our own country, in our own community? The variety of ways to say hello in English can be just as varied – ‘greetings, hi, cheers, hey, howdy, good to see you, what’s up, how’s it going, welcome’ all say ‘hello’ but each has its own nuance of meaning, expressed not only through the word, but through the tone in which it is said.

Are these nuances, these differences, and these tones in language important? They are, because how we express ourselves can close or open doors to deeper relationships. As Catholic Daughters, we have many opportunities for using language to spread the good news of Christ and to deepen our relationship with Him and with others. I encourage you to use language as a tool for participating in the CDA education contest, for inviting others to join our CDA sisterhood, for sharing your ideas, expressing your opinions, and even listening to others. Keep in mind the language we use must be respectful, even of those with whom we disagree. At times, we may even have to do the equivalent of ‘googling’ to understand what others are saying to us . . . we may have to ask for further explanation, or even bring someone else into the conversation to help shed light on what is being said. It’s worth the effort! It helps us understand others and them us. It gives us a greater appreciation of what others are saying, gives us a chance to share openly, honestly, calmly and confidently what is important to us and to hear what is important to others. Let’s use, and even broaden our language skills to work with each other – in Unity and Charity.

God’s Blessings to you all! Cathy Nelson, District Deputy of Medford, Owatonna & Waseca

THERE IS HOPE A fundraising banquet was held at Big Wood event center in Fergus Falls to launch a new Health Resources Clinic in Detroit Lakes. Holy Rosary Court #1916 in Detroit Lakes has pledged to help with its formation. This clinic will serve all of Becker County and the surrounding area. Pregnancy testing, ultrasounds, STD testing and treatment, abortion recovery, and Treasures for Life education classes are all examples of the free services that will be available at the clinic. Information on the clinic was announced

in the church bulletin and CDA members helped distribute flyers to area churches. Please pray for the success of the new clinic as well as an end to all abortions.

CDA BOOK CLUB MEETS Ct. Queen of Peace #1558 of Slayton, in fulfilling the Minnesota goal of spiritual enhancement, has initiated a book club. The book chosen for discussion was "Pope Francis a Living Legacy". The group met six times to share their thoughts about the book. It was very interesting to learn how the Pope epitomized St. Frances of Assisi and St. Ignatius Loyola. A BLIZZARD OF VALENTINES

Court St. John #1371 of Pipestone began its January meeting by making four sets of expressive valentines for 40 homebound parishioners of the Tri-Parish. As they sat around the tables making the valentines, a member asked, "Who delights more, the (Catholic) daughters or the recipients?" They all enjoyed the evening. The officers thought that the blizzard conditions would keep everybody away but 14 members attended the meeting. Now that’s dedication!!

PILGRIMAGE Sixty-two Catholic Daughters, their spouses, and relatives spent November 1-14, 2015, on a special pilgrimage to Rome, Orvieto, Assissi, Florence, Padua, Venice, Ravna Gora, and Medugorje with Rev. The seminarian distribution project has been going quite well. Twenty-three of our 29 courts completed the questionnaire form and forwarded it to me on time, which is a big help. Thank you!

Minnesota currently has 126 seminarians. The seminarian distribution per diocese is as follows: Crookston-3, Duluth-14, New Ulm-9, Winona-16, St. Cloud-16, and the Archdiocese of St. Paul has 62.

The majority of our Minnesota courts have chosen to participate or to do an individual program for their preferred seminarians. Over half of the courts are supporting from 1-5 seminarians, four courts have 6-9 seminarians, 3 courts are supporting 10 seminarians, and 2 courts taking care of 12 seminarians.

Court St. Margaret #1888 of Eveleth is the only court I am aware of that is participating in the “Penny a Day” collection program for our seminarians. If there are any others, I would be interested in knowing. There are several courts that do collect donations from their members that go toward the seminarians they have chosen. I am not aware of any donations that are combined with our state project collection that is divided among the entire diocese. Feel free to call or e-mail me for more information or if you have questions on the “Penny a Day” and I will explain the process to you.

Please submit your court's Seminarian Circle of Love report. I am always interested and delighted to read what you are doing to support the seminarian program. I especially like to hear of the correspondence from the seminarians.

God bless each and everyone for your devotion to this program. The seminarians that you are supporting today are our priests of tomorrow!

PRAYER & POTLUCK NOURISHES CT. ST. RITA

Prayer and Potluck was the theme for the Ct. St. Rita #409 Christmas party and meeting held at St. Henry’s Catholic Church. After a delicious potluck meal and goodies, the monthly meeting was followed by fun and games with many prizes for the winners. To end the evening, they gathered in a circle for prayer. The prayer “The True Lights and Sounds of Christmas” was one submitted by National Spiritual Enhancement Chairman Olga Samaniego.

10 SIGNS YOU ARE A LEADER (and don’t even know it)

It does not take a rocket scientist to figure out that in each and every one of us, there is a potential leader. Here are some indications that you are a great leader, and you don’t even know it yet.

1. You are approachable. 2. You maintain a smile, even when

it is difficult. 3. You have an open mind. 4. You are straightforward. 5. You are responsible, even though

you don’t want to be. 6. You treat everyone equally

despite how you feel. 7. You are confident but are never

afraid to ask for help or support. 8. You find the

silver lining, even in the worst situations.

9. You help others without expecting anything in return.

10. You genuinely care about how others are feeling.

If you found yourself thinking, “I do that”, you may just be a leader. As election for local officers draw near, please consider saying YES when nominated.

PERHAM CELEBRATES LIFE LITURGY Court St. Rita #409 of Perham proudly sponsored the Celebration of Life Liturgy at St. Henry's Catholic Church on January 22nd, 2016 with Court and National Chaplain, Reverend Matthew Kuhn presiding. They gathered to thank God for the special gift of life. The red rose is a symbol for those who believe life is our most basic right. In recognition of that right, the children of St. Henry's Area School presented red roses to expectant parents, expectant grandparents, and a newborn baby. Roses were also presented to the youth and placed on the altar for those who will move on to college next year and transition to become independent adults. Senior members of the community were also recognized. They are some of the church's most valuable resources. The final rose was placed on the Holy Family altar as a reminder of the Catholic Daughters' belief and the commitment to the right to life of all people. We are challenged to accept God's gift of life in all stages.

MEAL-IN-A-BUCKET Court St. Mary Peter #1864 members had another successful fundraiser, "Meal-in-a-Bucket". Pre-orders were taken weeks in advance. Sue Hinrichs, shown cutting carrots, made 10 of pots of potato soup while her

assistant, Kathy Arendt is adding the bacon. Helpers were Patrice O'Reilly, Jan Ryan, Cecel Flaaen, Mag Tri, and Anne Varner. Pre-orders were also taken for cinnamon rolls that were completed and ready for delivery after the weekend Masses. Former State Regent Ellen Huneke was proud of her baking skills.

GLOBAL CATHOLIC DAUGHTERS On December 8, 2015 Court St. Monica #2706 of Kenya, East Africa was instituted by the National CDA Board. There were over sixty women in attendance and many more who want to join. The court would like to purchase a bus and a tractor so they can be self supporting. The bus would allow them to transport people, earning money from the fares. The tractor would help them with tilling and planting a large plot of land to raise three or four crops of vegetables per year. National Regent Shirley Seyfried is asking that the Catholic Daughters contribute money so the bus and tractor may be purchased. Courts and individuals are encouraged to donate to this gift for Ct. St. Monica. All contributors’ names will be included in the card of congratulations. “Whatever you do for the least of my brethren, you do for me.” Matthew 25:40. Be a part of “global CDA” and watch our sisterhood reach out to the world.

FAMILY The promotion of family ensures that children are enabled to grow in stature, wisdom, and grace. With this understanding of family from Pope Francis and the Catechism of the Catholic Church, the National Board of the Catholic Daughters of the Americas voted to add Family to the Circle of Love. Our family, be it immediate, extended or inclusive, surrounds us at all times-- teaching us life's lessons, giving us the tools to make the right decisions, investing in our well-being and comfort, and providing love. Strong families build a strong society. A strong society builds a stronger country and a stronger world for all God's people. Throughout the year, courts should strengthen family relations by interacting with one another in service and work of the family community. Families praying together, working together, and playing together fully encompass the CIRCLE OF LOVE programs. I look forward to receiving your Circle of Love Reporting Form for FAMILY due by March 15th. Meg Schmidt State Family Chairwoman

RENEW-REFRESH-REDO St. Henry's Catholic Church of Perham held their annual renewal weekend on February 6-7 giving all members an opportunity to "Renew, Refresh, and Redo" the parish committees and organizations. This gives all members a chance to get involved in the activities at St. Henry’s and see where their talents can be put to good use. Court St. Rita #409 hosted a table of information to enlighten the parishioners of all the CDA events and charities. There were posters, pamphlets, the CDA banner, the charter from 1919, as well as State and National data which was displayed in an attractive collection. Catholic Daughters were on hand to answer questions and pass out information. A taco bar luncheon was held in honor of our many new members and to welcome them to our community. Court and National Chaplain Reverend Matthew Kuhn introduced the new members who were given an opportunity to introduce themselves and their families to everyone. LEGISLATIVE REPORT

Catholic Daughters of the Americas are pro-life women serving the Lord’s people. In 2016 we need to know the views of the candidates long before we go into the voting booth. It is our Catholic duty to know, share with boldness, stand up for life, and vote for the candidates who support the fifth Commandment, ‘Thou Shall Not Kill.’ When abortion is curtailed, we can truly ask God to Bless America. How will this happen? People need to place God first. With prayer, may we beseech God to bestow the necessary graces and blessings upon the United States to become a great nation once again! Work to Defund Planned Parenthood state by state. Find out how your state senators vote and work to defeat those who promote subsidies for Planned Parenthood. In the upcoming months, work for and support a pro-life President.

May God reign in your voting decisions.

JoAnn Derosier State Legislative Chair

Ct. St. Margaret #605 served a delicious Valentine’s Luncheon.
