Shalom, We were all horrified and shocked at the senseless deaths that happened at the Tree of Life Synagogue in Pittsburgh, PA. Since this happened, we have formed a security committee that is working to improve the security here at Temple Anshei Shalom. Mort Cooper is chairing this committee and has been in tourch with the Sheriff‘s office and other agencies. Both a Sheriff‘s car and a C.O.P. car now patrol our parking lot. A Sheriff‘s car is randomly parked in our parking lot. All of you can help with security. Please make sure that when you exit the building, the door closes behind you so that nobody can enter. Also, please look around so that if you see something, say something. November was a great month for us. Lifelong Learning is back with wonderful speakers and programs. Anshei After Dark is also back with a lineup of terrific entertainment. We all enjoyed Beatlemania. Lunch and Learn started their season with an informative talk by Reva Ginsberg about the Yiddish language and culture. Their next program is December 13th. In December, we have SARGE on December 2nd at 2:00 pm and the Grand International Concert with Cantor Beliniski on December 24th at 7:00 pm. Seating is limited so get your reserved tickets now. Temple Anshei Shalom will be hosting a Security Town Hall Meeting on Wednesday, December 5th at 2:00 pm. The panel for this program will include representatives from federal and state agencies, commissioners and community leaders and will be facilitated by State Representative Emily Slosberg and State Senator Lori Berman. This is for community education as well as for religious institutions. Please join us on Wednesday December 12th, at 11:00 am for our congregational meeting. The agenda will include the election of officers for 2019, the 2019 budget and committee reports. Have a happy Hanukkah. Kol Tov

Bell Ringer

Passing by the Salvation Army, I noticed a sign: “ Bell Ringer Wanted”. Of course the position referred to the seasonal position of a Holiday kettle drum bell ringer calling out for contributions. But, pondering it, I realized that I perform that duty every day and you do too. A bell ringer announces by his or her presence that there is an important mission they must perform and that people should take notice. When we come to shul, we are ringing that bell of commitment and connection. When we study together, we are ringing the bell of learning, and when we comfort a mourner, visit the sick, support Israel and Jewish causes, we are ringing the bell of affirmation, of mitzvot, and of memory. The festival of Chanukah is about light but it represents visual bell ringing. In response to the darkness of Pittsburgh and hatred, we add candles. We proudly stand up and announce to the world that we are here and have a mission and continue to transmit our beautiful treasure of Judaism with abiding joy. The best antidote to hate is light. The light of love and learning and living in a kind and compassionate way. This year make a powerful and beautiful sound with your menorah and your increased Jewish connections. Pete Seeger wrote a song about bell ringers in the late 40’s and apropos I share some of his lyrics from “If I Had A Hammer.” If I had a bell, I’d ring it in the morning. I’d ring it in the evening all over this land. I’d ring out danger. I’d ring out a warning. I’d ring out love between my brothers and sisters all over this land.

Shalom Fellow Congregants: In our previous columns we “kvelled” about the gala committee and its commitment to a successful gala and journal. It is time you knew who these hard working volunteers are that form such a responsive team. Accordingly, they are:Barbara & David AbramowitzLinda Abramowitz Elliott KlepnerFran Adler Irwin SchultzSheila Arenzon Sheila SredenPaulette Ballin Elizabeth & Ron StuxIrving Friedman Ex Officio: Linda Cooper

What a pleasure it is to work with these ladies and gentlemen. Linda Abramowitz, Sheila Arenzon and Jane Wechsler met with Eric of Diamond Caterers to discuss menu choices and décor. These will be presented at the next committee meeting and a decision will be made at that time. We are extremely proud and overjoyed to announce our new honorees: Joan and Lester Schwartz, both of whom are hard working for, and are very supportive of, our Temple. We kicked off our commercial and professional ad campaign and the ads are starting to come in. If you visit a business or professional (doctor, dentist, ophthalmologist, attorney, CPA or audiologist), why not take an ad form with you and ask them for an ad? These forms are available in the office for your convenience. After all, the ultimate beneficiary will be our Temple. Till next issue.

Gala CommitteeJane & Fred Wechsler

This Thanksgiving, I was happy to count each of you as personal blessings. You are the folks who support our TAS fundraising efforts and bring our goals within reach. Our fundraising entertainments are going to be especially great this season! Tickets are still available for

the Grand International Concert 2 pm, Dec. 24. We’ll be swept away by our own Cantor Cesar Beleniski, of Argentina, our Choir Director Cantor Bill Wood, Cantor Alvaro Navarro of Chile and Sharon Alcalay-Leibovici of Israel. Plus a five-member live Klezmer band. Tickets: $30, $35, and $40. Our Jan. 9 Anshei After Dark show is something really different: Burns & Allen, Together Again, 7pm. Actors Betsie Wickard and Peter Salzer look and sound so much like George and Gracie you’ll be shocked. Comedy, skits, songs. An evening of good, old-fashioned fun. General admission: $10; reserved (first 5 rows) and at door, $15. Free refreshments. On Jan. 20, we’ll show the opera, “The Passenger’, a story about a West German Diplomat and his wife whose paths cross a former prisoner they knew in Auschwitz. 1 to 4 pm, 15 minute intermission. Tickets, $10. Free refreshments. Then get ready for something totally amazing on Sunday, Feb. 10, at 2 pm when we feature an honest-to-goodness, genuine A list star of TV and movies: Comedian Billy Gardell. He was hilarious opposite Melissa McCarthy on the popular CBS sitcom Mike & Molly. Maybe you caught his comedy specials on Showtime and Comedy Central? He’s now performing his stand-up at major venues nationally. Tickets are $25, $30 and $35. Why is a huge star like Billy Gardell coming here? Because after the Tree of Life shootings, Billy, a Pittsburgh boy, told his agent (the son of members Ted and Carole Marcus) that he wanted to do something to help a synagogue. Let’s give Billy a huge TAS welcome on Feb. 10! Looking to travel? As of this writing, there were still a few places left on the TAS Israel trip, April 1-15, led by Rabbi Adler and Fran. Finally, I want to wish you all a very Happy Hanukah!!

“Throughout human history, our greatest leaders and thinkers have used the power of words to transform our emotions, to enlist us in their causes, and to shape the course of destiny. Words cannot only create emotions, they create actions. And from our actions flow the results of our lives.”

Tony Robbins

We were given a gift...the ability to speak and communicate...a world where Jewish people from all parts of the globe...speak various languages... but use words that we can understand. Squirrel Hill was a wake up call for us to choose our words to heal... to comfort... to support. Words can be the lyrics in a song which can bring much joy... words can be contentious, quarrelsome... words can warn you of danger... words can be a promise of things to come...what words do we choose to express our most inner feelings? Rabbi Jack Riemer, in his book, “Finding God in Unexpected Places,” included his sermon titled, “Four Phrases to Live By.” I must admit that I read that particular sermon many, many times. Whenever I become upset with what is happening in the world, or in my world, I reread the words that were written, and it gives me hope that we can have a caring, compassionate, and kind dialogue...it takes these four phrases: “Thank you”

“I love you”

“I am sorry”

“How are you? What do you need?

Together, let us use our words to make a difference.

I Care...You Care...We All Care...Fran Goldman

The TAS library has been the recipient of Judaic artifacts, as well as books of all kinds. These donations are appreciated; however, they should not be dropped off and left in the library. In order to keep our library organized, all material contributions of books and artifacts should be brought to the main office for drop off. We accept all books. We want to let you know that we have re-located our annual “Elite” donor Kol Nidre board to outside the chapel, on the lobby side, on the door. Take a moment to go over and look at it. It is a listing of our Elite supporters in three categories:

Pillars Of Torah: $1800Benefactors: $1000Sponsors: $500

To those of you, whose names appear on this year’s board, we are hoping that you can see your way clear to not only make another “Elite” donation, but that you will even chose to move up a category. To those of you, whose names don’t appear, maybe it is time to join our “Elite” donors. You will be hearing and reading more about being an "Elite" donor, and the Kol Nidre campaign in the near future.

“The Passenger” By Mieczyslaw Weinberg

Opera in Two Acts

In Russian, German, Polish, French, Yiddish, Czech & English with English subtitles

Sunday, Jan. 20, 1 pm Running time: 2 hrs, 50 min. 15 minute intermission with free coffee/tea/cookies

Aboard an ocean liner in the early 1960s, a West German diplomat, Walter and his wife Liese are bound for a new posting in Brazil. But unbeknownst to her husband, Liese served as an

SS officer in Auschwitz. Haunted by her past, she is stunned when she thinks she recognizes a fellow passenger. Is it really Marta, her former prisoner?

Suppressed for more than 40 years, Weinberg's gripping opera has emerged anew, electrifying audiences at Austria's Bregenz Festival and again in Warsaw and London.

The action moves between two realms— from the pristine deck of a luxury liner above to the horrors of the death camp below.

Guilt and denial, lies and truth, fear and courage, and love - it's all here in an artistic and emotional experience you'll never forget.

"Music of beauty and enormity ... it is a perfect masterpiece ... it is a hymn to humanity ... to the international solidarity of those who, subjected to the most terrible evil,

stood up against fascism." Dmitri Shostakovich Tickets: $10 In advance or at door
