MAYOR Dave Augustyn, who referred to himself as “Mayor McCheese”, served at the drive thru window of the Fonthill McDonalds on Wednesday, May 2 to help out with McHappy Day. Paul Owen, president of Pelham Cares, sells a paper boot to Rose and Don Wallace as part of McHappy Day fundraising. Throughout the day $1 from every McHappy Meal, Big Mac, or coffee was donated to Ronald McDonald House charities to support families of children hospitalized out of their hometowns. The Fonthill location raised more than $3,700 through food sales, boot and wristband sales, a penny raffle and sales of hanging plants.

In the trying times of today’s economy, Employment Solutions is doing all they can to provide jobs.

“We’re funded by Employment Ontario to provide jobs for the people of Pelham,” says Project Manager Diane Rice.

“We’ve lost a lot of jobs in this area, but we provide so much assistance, there’s all kinds of things that people aren’t even aware of,” says Rice.

Although there are three employment agencies in the area, Rice says there are a few reasons why Employment Solutions stands out.

“One thing very unique about us is we have more than five years experience in working with new comers to Canada,” says Rice.

“Canada has such a big difference from any other country for education, it can be very hard to get a job. There isn’t one person who has come through that door that we haven’t helped.”

Rice says Employment

Solutions host a wide variety of work shops, computer training and sessions on employment.

“What really sets us apart is we have a great staff, they provide so much one on one counselling,” says Rice.

Employment Solutions even offers their resources to people who are not registered with the company.

“If people want to just come in here and use our resource centers, they can. We have computers, information pamphlets, etc., you don’t have to be registered,” says Rice.

For the rest of May Employment Solutions will be hosting a wide variety of things, including a resume clinic every Friday.

“Out of the three agencies in this area, we are probably the smallest, and we’re very proud of what we’ve accomplished here,” says Rice with a smile.

Al and Susan Beamer will not only be selling for their business at the Farmer’s Market this Thursday, they will be raising money for the Canadian Diabetes Association.

“I heard a speaker once, and he inspired me to get involved,” says Al on why he started raising money for the Lion’s Club, which he is the Chair for Diabetes.

For every donation made, the donator will receive an Elwoodii Cyprus, with donations starting at $2.50.

“Every bit of the proceeds are going to

the association. We’re raising money for Camp Huronda.”

Camp Huronda, in Huntsville, Ont., is a Diabetes Camp and Learning center.

The camp promotes teaching children with type one diabetes skills in gaining diabetes independence.

The camp is looking to replace two older buildings with one larger building, calling it the Lion’s Learning Centre. The estimated cost is between $146,000 - $312,000, which Al is doing his part to help raise.

“I’m always looking for way to raise money for this,” says Al.

Al says all the Lion’s clubs in Ontario are working to

help this cause.“There’s always someone

who needs help,” says Susan Beamer, “we want to do it.”

The trees will be on display at the market this Thursday, but anyone interested can come to Al and Susan’s business to make donations, located at 459 Highway 20.

The Beamer’s will also have their usual displays set up at the market.


Al and Susan Beamer are raising money for the Lion’s Club this week at the Farmer’s Market. All proceeds will go to the Canadian Diabetes Association.

“Every photo or piece has a story.”

Local artist Divino Mucciante’s passion for art and photography has lasted over 40 years, and now he works to bring recognition to other local artists.

“I joined the committee just because I wanted to help out, I didn’t know much about the whole promotion aspect,” says Mucciante.

Mucciante started a career as a tool and die maker, but shifted his focus towards his true passion, photography.

“I cut my income in half,” laughs Mucciante on the transition, “but I was doing what I love. I was Brock University’s photographer for 33 years.”

Mucciante says now that he’s retired, he can focus on working “whatever he

wants.”“I get to travel now and

take pictures, I have an open house in a couple weeks, it’s just really great.”

Although this is Mucciante’s second year displaying his work at the Art Festival, this is his first year on the actual committee.

“I took on the assignment Art Around Town. Thirteen businesses are displaying local artists, I was responsible for pairing the artists with the businesses,” says Mucciante.

Mucciante says the town’s reception to Art Around Town has been “very good.”

“This town is so good, people are so accommodating. Everybody is just so pleasant, it’s such a pleasure to meet and talk with everyone.”

Mucciante says the importance of the Art Festival is to simply showcase local talent, and to socialize “ with a lot of wonderful people.”

“It’s just great to show and talk about the art, photography sparks so much conversation, there’s always a story,” says Mucciante. “I’m retired now, if I sell a piece, I sell a piece. If not, it’s no big deal.”

A scene of Rockport Maine painted by Lockport, New York watercolour artists Michael McMahon is one of the pieces being raffled at this year’s festival. Also being raffled this year is a fused glass platter created by glass artist Joe Speck, who will also be showing at the Festival.

This year marks the 26th annual Pelham Art Festival, an event that began has a back yard fundraiser to support the local library.

Now more than 65 artists from Ontario, Quebec and the United States show their painting, pottery, sculpture, glass jewelry and other arts to crowds at the Pelham Arena over three days.

Heidi Tebrake, one of the festival organizers, says there are several new

artists featured in this year’s show.

The business community, she said, has been very supportive once again, taking part in the Art Around Town program which allows local businesses to preview art works for their customers.

This year’s festival takes place May 11 to 13. The opening gala evening is Friday, May 11 from 7 to 10 p.m. The $8 admission includes live entertainment and light buffet as well as a cash wine bar.

Saturday, May 12 and Sunday, May 13 the show runs from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is $5, children under 10 are free. There will be the Salvador Deli and a cash bar. A weekend pass is $10.

To date the festival has generated $345,000 for the Pelham Library.

The Fenwick Fire Department is now looking for donations to their fourth annual Garage Sale, taking place May 26, from 8 a.m. - 2 p.m. at the Station 2 Fire House.

“It’s gone really well in the past, we’re greatly appreciative of all the support we’ve gotten from the community,” says garage sale Director Jeremy De Roos.

De Roos, who has ran the event since it’s beginning, says that not only is it for a good cause, that it’s also a great way to meet the community.

“It can get overwhelming, every year we receive more and more.”

De Roos says any proceeds from the sale go directly back to the community through different avenues.

“We support the softball team, the basketball team, Pelham Cares and other organizations,” says De Roos. “It’s distributed throughout the community.”

De Roos says they accepting anything except clothing for the sale.

“We’ll take anything really, any outdoor stuff, cabinets, electronics, furniture and sporting goods, anything.

The cut-off for donations will be May 23, giving De Roos time to sort through the items.

To make a donation, contact De Roos at 905-892-6571, Monday from 6 p.m.- 7 p.m. being the most ideal time.

De Roos that pick ups and drop offs are accepted.
