Live Your Best Life Now

The Voice of Friends

Frozen in fear. There is this feeling one gets when sometimes, despite how well life is going, something bitter- sweet bubbles up. Joy and despair seem to dwell

together in your safe space. How can that be? Maybe you just

finished your last radiation treatment. Maybe you have been cancer-free for three years. Maybe, just maybe, the joy of these victories is dampened by the despair one feels of the unknown, unseen, unthinkable possibility that ‘it’s not really over.’

All too often I sit with folks who are ‘frozen in fear—standing still’ while going through treatment. Three months free of chemo. Six months until the next cat scan. A small twinge or pain in that same place as two years ago. It’s waking up in the morning wondering if the dread will ever go away. They live and relive their cancer experience with anxiety, and the hope not to repeat that leg of their journey again.

So, how do you live your best life when that feeling washes over you?

Live your life. Not just a good life - YOUR BEST LIFE.

Don’t hesitate—destiny can’t be controlled, but today can.

Find your safe space and surround yourself with encouraging friends.

By sharing your doubts and fears you can release the negative and bask in the positive.

Be kind to yourself. Our cancer friends and survivors do not have to

be happy all of the time. Give yourself permission to reflect—and then take action to make your day better.

Recall your dreams of yesterday and work hard to make them come true. Write your list—make it happen!

Warm regards, Judy Burns

longer with cancer. In fact, some cases of cancer can be considered a chronic condition. We want to personally thank all of our generous sponsors, donors and compassionate volunteers who share our vision that no one should have to walk the cancer journey alone. We celebrate each one of you - as you have helped us help your neighbor.

We will always need you. They will always need you. Cancer isn’t

Friends Together has been there for us through good times and bad times - always supporting at every turn. Sharing our journey is one of the greatest gifts this organization has done for us.

Friends Together gives free rides to cancer treatment for people living in northeast Michigan. We can help out with lodging when folks travel to far away places for treatment and appointments involving their cancer diagnosis. Each week we listen to nearly 100 people as they travel through their cancer journey. We offer an average of seven cancer support groups every week. We host events to raise money, of course. But we also hold these events with a focus on fun and/or education. We firmly believe that laughter and learning are critical components to a healthy life. Put simply, We Help People With Cancer. But we don’t do it alone. We can’t do it alone. More and more people are living

going anywhere. Please plan to give today so we are here for those who need us tomorrow.

We do what we do because of you.

“I have cancer.” A common string of words heard at Friends Together. Each person who utters this statement is almost always taken aback with a wave of unexpected emotion. They had likely never said the ‘c’ word out loud when referring to themselves.

Thankfully, they find their way into Friends Together. They may pace the parking lot or drive around the block a few times before coming in; then their courage takes over and they make it inside our safe haven. They bravely push open the glass front door and step inside our supportive world.

Tears glisten in the corner of my eyes often these days. How could they not? Someone I may have never met is trusting me with their story.

I am in awe of them. Every tear they shed releases anxiety, fear, confusion and uncertainty. With wild abandon each salty drop bursts open releasing previously unacknowledged emotions of feeling alone and isolated in their cancer.

Yet, tears also give awareness to waves of relief, hope, joy and belonging. Each tear we allow to pass frees a burden - no longer do we have to put on a brave front. No longer are we alone. When we trust another with our story, we are sharing the burdens, yes, but also

the beauty.

It isn’t the job of Friends Together to find a cure for cancer. There are lots of people trying to do that. There is a great big healthcare machine out there with powerful lobbyists for everything from insurance to research. They do a very good job at generating government and private dollars.

But who is taking care of the patient’s state-of-mind throughout treatment? Who is ministering to their soul while they undergo so many physical and mental changes? Where do they go for quiet comfort, support, friendship, and understanding?

Friends Together is the answer to all those questions. We offer support, free of charge, in many ways. And while we never really know where the money will come from to keep us operational, here we are still going strong 23 years later. We are able to help more and more people each year with the generous donations that come our way. That is a good thing. All indicators point to more and more people living longer with cancer than previously recorded. In other words, people live longer but must make peace with their new normal. Friends Together is here to support their journey and walk with them.

But what if we weren’t? What if Friends Together ceased to exist in Northeast Michigan? Take a good

look at those numbers on the front page. As the number of people living with cancer increases, so does their need for support. Fundraising is a lot of work. Our communities are wonderful in their giving. But raising dollars constantly can be exhausting and gobbles our resources quickly. None of our annual big dollar donors are committed indefinitely. Each year we request. Each year donors decide how much money to give to Friends Together, if any. It just takes one to decide that supporting those with cancer in our community no longer fits their giving model and we lose the opportunity to help a neighbor get to treatment or come to terms with the side effects.

This is why we recently set up the Friends Together Fund at Northeast Michigan’s Community Foundation. Our goal is one million dollars. When we get to that magical seven-digit number, we will earn $50,000 each year to help keep our doors.

Asking for help is hard. Everyday someone steps through our doors. Each time we are overcome with gratitude. Gratitude that we are here for them and they have found refuge and support in us.

Have you or someone you care about benefited from support? What if it wasn't there for you? For your loved-one? Please help. Encourage those you know who give to put their dollars into Friends Together for the future.

See you in a couple weeks!

Friends Together is my new family. This group got us through a very difficult time. I was scared and angry and Lesslee, Judy, and the group got us both calmed down. It’s not just a serious group, but we spend time having fun and laughing too. Friends Together helped me feel good about myself during treatment by giving me a wig, hats and the Touch of Beauty program. Since I am cancer free now, I hope that I give others hope.

~Howard & Kathy Danielson

Friends Together has given me a place to go and talk to other women who are going through

the same thing. I've learned so many things I had no clue about and I'm very grateful.

Also I have benefited from the gas cards and hotel stays down state which is very much appreciated.

How Support Groups Help Cancer deaths are decreasing. People are living with cancer longer.

Finding a support group that fits your personality and needs is important for your whole-health.

Cancer is not just a physical challenge. No, this journey has a lot of baggage. If we don’t unpack it in a safe environment we risk delaying our healing.

At Friends Together, our support groups help people cope with the emotional aspects of cancer. We offer a place to work through feelings and challenges of living with cancer.

We offer hope, joy, and a path to peace. Through our combined

experiences, people who participate in support groups learn because of our frank discussions about topics we may not be comfortable discussing with people who can’t understand - even though they love us.

We all want to ‘snap out of it’ at some point. With support, we learn it isn’t about getting back to who we were, but embracing who we can become.

Take a look at page 8. There you will see a short description of our opportunities for support. Contact us to learn more. Or just show up and find out for yourself.

Your are not alone.

Let Us Help Transportation & Lodging

Good day friends! I wanted to share some information to help your transportation to treatment and

appointments go a little smoother when traveling for your cancer treatments.

Prior to starting your journey, it is always recommended that you contact Friends Together as soon as you have a scheduled appointment if you need assistance with a gas card, driver or lodging.

Please, help our funds last longer to serve as many as possible. Always check with your insurance provider to utilize all the services that are offered through your plan.

Need help in knowing where to start? We are only a phone call away. Call today.

I felt lost. Just when I thought there was nowhere to go, I found Friends Together. In the beginning their help with lodging and gas was a godsend. I’ve been dealing with this (cancer) for a couple of years now and I’m no longer overwhelmed because of the support I receive from Friends Together and the Guys Like Us Support group. Those men remind me I’m not alone. That goes a long way.

Eat Cheap on the Road

Traveling for appointments can really impact our wallets. Besides the gas and time, we still have to eat while away from home. Here are a couple of great ways to save money, yet eat healthy while traveling.

Boiled Eggs

This is one of those perfectly healthy, inexpensive foods that comes in its own wrapper! Boil a bunch and take with your for a quick nutritional kick.

Bring a pot of water to a boil, gently lower cold eggs straight from the fridge into the boiling water. Turn water down to a good simmer. Pull the eggs out when done.

5 min: firm white, runny yolk 6 min: gooey yolk, starting to set 8 min: fully set yolk, but soft 10 min: firmer pale yolk 12 min: almost hard-boiled yolk 14 min: completely hard-boiled

Immediately plunge directly into an ice bath. Let them hang in the ice cold water for 5 minutes. Crack and peel when ready to eat.

The Roll-Up

Another inexpensive and nutritionally-packed quick meal on the go is the simple sandwich. Be creative! Try a package of burrito shells and roll your sandwiches up. Far less messy to eat and clean up.

Take it With You

Staying away from home for a few nights to undergo treatment? Take a cooler and pack it with food from home. Be sure to toss in some of those cheap ramen noodles (easily cooks with hot water from in-room coffee pot) add some frozen or diced fresh veggies and you’ve got a meal. Toss with spaghetti sauce to zest it up a bit.

What are some of your ideas?

This group of incredible young people worked hard this past spring to earn money to help those in our community with cancer. By collecting their pennies, they raised a whooping $1,046. That’s going to help a lot of people. Thank you!

You will begin to hear about Friends for the Future. This is our new initiative to address our long-term financial needs.

It takes time, and resources, to help those whose lives have been impacted by cancer. Here at Friends Together we see the benefit from supporting our neighbors. Our donors and sponsors see it too.

We are often pleasantly surprised by the unexpected donation. We completely understand that money comes to us as a way for loved ones to express their gratitude. We also generate sponsorships for our events. Yes, we have an impressive marketing package for businesses who are interested in supporting us as we carry out our mission. But more than that, as a business you know your sponsorship dollars stay in our communities. That’s right - 100% of our revenue stays in northeast Michigan.

We understand the importance of building for the future needs of our community members. Cancer isn’t going away and neither are we.

Friends for the Future

In the coming months we will be rolling out and explaining our new Friends Together Fund at the Community Foundation of Northeast Michigan. It is under their guidance that we will raise money for our endowment while maintaining our current level of donations for daily operation.

It won’t be easy. But we aren’t alone. You are here to help us now and in the future.

We remember friends who have been honored or memorialized by their family and friends with this single list in each newsletter edition. Each taught us something about living well through the cancer experience. Each leaves lasting, loving memories in our hearts. We promise to honor them by doing all we can to support and care for those in northeast Michigan touched by cancer.

Note: Generally, we list the names of those for whom family or friends have requested a memorial. A memorial gift is not required. We simply need to receive a note stating that you want to recognize this person’s life through our listing. We do need your name to verify that the listing is accurate. We Help People With Cancer

The Story of Friends Together every way. We offer an average of

25 support group opportunities

each month, educational events

throughout the year, a thriving

transportation & lodging program

that removes common barriers to

treatment, and maintain a fully

staffed stand-alone

office. Our

organization

has proudly

walked beside hundreds

of people along their cancer

Friends Together is a non-profit

organization whose sole purpose is

to help people during and after a

cancer diagnosis. We provide free

support programs and services to

six (6) counties - Alcona, Alpena,

Iosco, Montmorency, Oscoda, and

Presque Isle. We began in 1996

when Judy Burns promised her

daughter that no one would have

to experience cancer alone, like

they did. Two decades later

Friends Together has grown in

journey. No one needs to face

cancer alone. All of this is possible

because of the generosity of our

donors and the tireless efforts of

our volunteers. Together we make

a positive difference. In all

likelihood, each of us will

experience cancer during our

lifetime. Whether you

are the patient or

the loved one,

Friends Together is here to

support you.
