MISSION OF TOASTMASTERS CLUBS
HISTORY
How it started?
In 1924, Ralph C. Smedley held the first toastmasters meeting in a basement in YMCA in Santa Ana, Califor-nia.
When it became
“International” ?
Toastmasters became Toastmasters Internation-al after a speaking club in New Westminster, British Columbia, Canada, ex-pressed interest in joining the organization.
TOASTMASTERS -
TODAY
How big is Toastmas-
ters International to-
day?
As of today there are 3,13,000 memberships in more than 14,650 clubs in 126 countries
Who can join Toastmas-
ters?
Anyone over the age of 18 can join Toastmasters, pro-vided they have the desire to improve their communication and leadership skills.
Toastmasters is also a per-fect platform for networking with people.
Toastmasters International (TMI) is a nonprofit educational organization that operates clubs worldwide for the purpose of helping members to improve their communication, public speaking and leadership skills. Through its thousands of member clubs, Toastmasters International offers a program of communication and leadership projects designed to help people learn the arts of speaking, listen-ing, and thinking.
A Toastmasters club adopts a “learn-by-doing” philosophy, wherein each member learns at a pace suitable to his or her developmental needs. The Toastmasters program is divided into two separate tracks, communication and leadership, with members progressing along each track by presenting speeches and taking on roles within their club, district and Toastmasters International itself.
Toastmasters International Mission
We empower individuals to become more effective communicators and leaders.
Coromandel Toastmasters Club is the young Toastmasters community club in Chennai, Tamilnadu. Coromandel Toastmasters Club (CTC) is situated in Tam-baram and helps the aspiring Leaders and Communicators in South Chennai in developing their personal and professional skills. VOICE OF DTM
3Rs of a Successful Toastmaster
If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more and be-come more, you are a leader.— John Quincy Adams
It was the year 2010, I was serving as the President of Chennai Toast-
masters Club. A guest in his mid-20s approached me at the end of the
meeting and asked, “Sir! I’m completely impressed by the meeting. Can I
complete the entire course in just 1 year? I’m very busy with lot of other
activities and I want to complete this course soon”.
He is not an exception. Very recently, I was approached by a young
toastmaster who said “Sir! I am doing my under graduation now and I
have lots of spare time. I want to complete my DTM in the next two
years”.
I have seen several toastmasters who want to complete their speaking
projects and leadership assignments, soon. Public Speaking and Lead-
ership are skills that are developed by practicing, participating and per-
forming. There are absolutely NO SHORTCUTS. If there is one magic
pill that you can swallow before going to the bed and wake up as a com-
petent speaker the next day morning, everybody will be a competent
speaker today.
So, how can you get the maximum out of the toastmasters program?
The fullest benefit of toastmasters program can be achieved only when
you follow the 3Rs:

VOICE OF DTMs
3Rs of a Successful Toastmaster
A leader is one who knows the way, goes the way, and shows the way.
- John C. Maxwell
1. Regularity
Being regular is the most important trait of a successful toastmaster.
What happens to an athlete, when he/she doesn’t exercise regularly;
when he/she doesn’t attend practice sessions regularly? Mastering the
art of public speaking is very similar to sports – it requires regular prac-
tice. What better platform can you get to regularly practice your skills
than a toastmasters club?
Regularly attend club meetings
Regularly take a diverse set of roles in the club meeting
Regularly deliver speeches in your club and in other clubs
Regularly participate in contests and benchmark your perfor-
mance
Regularly take leadership roles in your club and outside your clubs
2. Research
Performing adequate research is important for any assignment that you
do – not just in toastmasters. Charles E. Jones, a famous author said
"Five years from now you'll be the same person you are today except for
the books you read and the people you meet”. It is very true. As a toast-
master, we need to develop habits of reading books, reading newspa-
pers, attending educational programs, participating in contests and con-
tinuously learning new things by research. Research helps us to discov-
er new ways of doing things, it helps us to constantly innovate and dis-
cover a BETTER YOU!
3. Rehearsals
Our District 82 Champions TM Alexandar Babu, and TM Guruprasad
delivered a 7 minutes humorous speech to win the prestigious 1st and
3rd positions respectively in the district conference, Reverberations 2012.
Can you imagine how many times they would’ve rehearsed before their
most memorable performance at the District? They rehearsed at least a
50 times for months together, before their final performance at the dis-
trict. If great champions have to rehearse for at least 50 times before
their performance, how many times should we rehearse before giving
our speech at the club? A successful toastmaster, rehearses multiple
times before they do any performance in toastmasters.

Voice of DTM
Having been in the IT industry for over two decades, I very well knew the
importance of communication and leadership in shaping up my career. I
have always believed in the fact that beyond a certain level, it’s the com-
munication skill that will help climb the corporate ladder. In the absence of
this trait, one will lay stagnant!
World over, public speaking and
communication skills resonate
with the term "Toastmasters".
People from all walks of life
have spoken a lot about the
benefits of Toastmasters. While
many have succeeded in devel-
oping their communication skills,
many others have learnt the art
of leadership skills.
So, when you join toastmasters,
you are very much answering
the fundamental question in your
mind – “What’s in it for me?”
Everybody claims to be a great communicator or the least presumes to be
a great communicator. Simply put, we end up communicating our ideas
and thoughts across every day. So what’s the difference and where is the
need?
In my opinion, learning the art of communicating in such a way that we are
able to connect and also articulate, makes all the difference. It’s all about
packaging. Where to tell what and how! This is where we all tend to go
wrong and by the time we realize, the damage is done.
The winner of the 2015 WCPS’s title was the “Power of words”. His
speech resonates with this theory. Words when said can either break or
build a relationship. The question is ‘How to say it?’ I firmly believe that
Toastmasters gives each of us a platform to practice various forms of
communication which will eventually let us practice the art of communica-
tion.
So, that answers the question ‘What’s in it for me?’ A lot, my dear friend!
Explore and you will witness the answers explode in front of you ! Happy
Toastmastering.

Voice of well wisher
Greetings to members of Coromandel Toastmasters! If there is anything common among fellow human beings cutting across Race, Religion and Gender, it is in quest to being Successful. Everyone wants to succeed in their life in their own ways. We look up to the stal-warts in our chosen field. We are inspired by their success and decide to follow their footsteps. Wait a minute! Did I say, follow their footsteps? In our quest to excel in a chosen field we have three options in front of us. One is to emulate others. Second is to work on our weakness. Third is to leverage our strengths.
While the first option seem to be a shortcut to success, it is disastrous to emulate others since you lose your creativity. Second option of working on your weakness will also not work since how much ever we work, there are always going to be weakness within us. Finally we are left with the last and the best choice of leveraging our strengths to achieve our vision. Lev-eraging our strength in a chosen field is like an arrow that comes out of the bow, there is only one direction, FORWARD direction. Similarly, inspired by listening to erudite and eloquent speeches of toast-masters, we join this movement to become better public speakers. I take this opportunity to share a PIECE OF good news with you. You can also become a great public speaker. Not by emulating others or working on your weaknesses, but only by leveraging your strengths. That will take you only in the FORWARD direction. The Extent you leverage, will not only make your speeches special, but you will also become special.

Snakes and their legs
A few months ago I was browsing through a thick voluminous book in a
bookstore in Chennai. It was a photo biography of Sir Winston Churchill.
The author had painfully collated pictures of Churchill in a chronological
order to help readers to have a good appreciation of this great man's
life. There were several pictures of him since his childhood, defining vari-
ous phases of his illustrious life. These included those defining moments
when Churchill brought Britain back from the brink of disaster through
his scintillating speeches, to a magnificent victory in World War II. Pic-
tures of him making passionate speeches to the nation were all en-
thralling. Towards the end of this book, there was this specific picture of
Churchill delivering a public speech. It appeared to me as inconspicuous
and I did not have any clue of its significance until I read through the au-
thor's note on this. It was surprising and equally shocking for me. The
author 's comment on this picture was to the following effect: Winston
Churchill, having been away from public life for two years, is now unable
to deliver a public speech without entirely relying on a piece of paper. I
looked at the picture again. Yes, he was reading through a paper. Know-
ing what the world knows Winston Churchill as a remarkable public
speaker, could this happen to him if he goes out of touch with public
speaking for two years? Is this what happens to Toastmasters if we don't
continuously and consistently be involved with public speaking? It re-
minded me of an old the-
ory that snakes had legs
during the pre-historic
times. But they never
bothered to use them.
Instead, they used only
their bodies to move
along. Hence in the pro-
cess of evolution, nature
decided to do away with
the legs which snakes
were not using. If some-
thing was not used for a long time, it is as good as lost.

speak in public — George Jessel

On 7th November 2014, I had delivered my “CC1 – The Ice break-
er” and summarised my speech as follow. “I am here, in this club
to come out of the fear of public speaking and leave my habit of
procrastination.
A year from now, I will wish I had started my journey today.
This time, my single
step in the right direc-
tion…. “
After 10 months, I feel
that I am realising my
wish. This week, I have
completed my CC7,
Research your topic.
Most memorable one is
my CC4 How to say it; I
had delivered this
speech at Hanoi speakers club in Vietnam. Speaking in front of an
international audience gives a unique experience where your ac-
cent and pace of your speech needs to be controlled. I went a
speech with 600 words and delivered only around 500 words, I
was adaptive to trim my speech on the go. After all, in any
speech, only speaker knows the content and not audience.
My journey with Coromandal Toastmasters Club is exotic journey
and it provides plenty of opportunity to its members.
CTC is not only a platform for public speaking; it is also a gateway
for leadership skill development and networking. Thank you each

Who is Happy???
The quality of a leader is reflected in the standards they set for themselves.- Ray Kroc
A Crow was absolutely satisfied in life. But one day he saw a swan. This
swan is so white and I am so black...crow thought, “This swan must be
the happiest bird in the world". He expressed his thoughts to the swan.
"Actually," the swan replied, "I was feeling the same way until I saw a
parrot, which has two colours. I now think the parrot is the happiest bird
in creation."
The crow then approached the parrot. The parrot explained, "I lived a
very happy life—until I saw a peacock. I have only two colours, but the
peacock has multiple colours." The crow then visited a peacock in the
zoo and saw that hundreds of people had gathered to see him. After the
people had left, the crow approached the Peacock and exclaimed, “Dear
Peacock, You are so beautiful. Every day thousands of people come to
see you. When people see me, they immediately shoo me away. I think
you are the happiest bird on the planet”. The peacock replied, “I always
thought that I was the most beautiful and happy bird on the planet. But
because of my beauty, I am entrapped in this zoo. I have examined the
zoo very carefully, and I have realized that the crow is the only bird not
kept in a cage. So for past few days I have been thinking that if I was a
crow, I could happily roam everywhere”.
That's our problem too. We make unnecessary comparison with others
and become sad. We don't value what God has given us. This all leads
to the vicious cycle of unhappiness. Value the things God has given us.
Learn the secret of being happy and discard the comparison which
leads only to unhappiness...

Gratitude
Leadership is the capacity to translate vision into reality.- Warren Bennis
Human beings are competitive and want to succeed in all directions. Perhaps, par-
tially he has succeeded which has resulted in enormous control over nature and
also has got greater comfort than any other species in this earth.
On the other hand, It’s does not mean that seeking comfort and success is wrong
and one has to return back to Stone Age. But does a person realize that just by
keep on moving towards after success; he is completely forgets to acknowledge
whatever he has already succeeded in his past? He has a breath which he owes
gratitude to Cyanobacteria (first creature to create oxygen in this earth), He has
good food which owes gratitude to nature, and he has balance and happiness
which he owes gratitude to friends and relationship he has, which really add
meaning to his life.
Success is like a dog without legs. Even if you tries to call it in any circumstance, it
can’t come. It’s so much out of one’s control. If one tries not to get blinded by
success and be grateful to everything around him , we can create a better loving
and peaceful environment. All I say is we can only be believed to be alive in those
moments when our heart are conscious of our treasures and understand how
privileged we are and be grateful on what we have.
So, please be grateful for your wealth, health, your time which is precious and for
your family and friends which are priceless. Now you have the key to be happy, so
use it immediately before someone changes the lock.

The contest I didn’t have with myself.
Leadership and learning are indispensable to each other.- John F. Kennedy
We all should compete with ourselves and become better. That is the spirit be-
hind our Toastmaster contests. But, in the initial stages, we tend to forget this,
and the so called cup is our “target”, only target.
My first tryst with humor contest started with MTM humor contest, as soon as I
was in Toastmasters. I contested, scribbled something the previous
day (and had audacity to call it as “script”) while attending a meeting (Meeting
was so interesting and the speaker thought I am taking “notes” of what he is say-
ing !). In project parlance, the commencement of the project got delayed…. .
could not much time to prepare. Naturally, after going to the stage in contest, I
forgot the ‘script” in many places and I was constrained to “fill” on the spot. The
audience response was good, only where I forgot the script and was “filling”, and
they were serious where I paused for them to “laugh”.
In six months of Toasmastering exposure, I became a bit better. With a change
of club due to “operational reasons”, I participated in the International speech
and TT contest. With a win at both the contests at the club level, and a runner up
position in area my confidence grew. As I was going even after the red card was
shown, that created anxiety. I took this as lesson learnt. Frequent changes in
script till the last moment, even after getting into the stage ( “improvisation” mis-
understood”) I couldn’t smash, but gave a decent performance. But lesson
learnt was in my mind… Timing… disqualification…….
The next humor contest came. As usual, started thinking about that well in ad-
vance by 20 hours, before the contest! In humor, if we are not making the audi-
ence laugh in the beginning, we are out. Forgetting this, the learning I had in the
last occasion came to mind, (last time my speech went into grace time....anxious
if had crossed the ‘laksman rekha’ . overlearned and I was eager to stop at yel-
low line ). And, I removed a starting joke in the last minute…. After serious few
minutes of “trying to connect with the audience”, making them think if this contest
is a humorous one, I came back to track. But it was too late.
In humor contest, if we fail to make them laugh in the beginning, we are not in
the reckoning, whatever we do in the middle or in the end .I lost the plot. Plus the
audience was in a terrible dilemma whether to laugh, as I was conveying some-
thing sensitive, about my struggle with an online matrimony site.
This fiasco is shared for future learning. Lessons learnt -
Learning from previous experience is good; over learning from the same is not...
No last minute script changes in contest. Enjoy the process.
Start early (one day .before is too much. one week ahead you should start…
OMG, what I said…. Start early…. But in
the case of this article too, request came
long ago, starting after the deadline
started…. After three reminders….. This
procrastination reminded of an FB post,
