THE VISION Our vision is a world where all people have access
to safe drinking water and sanitation; a world where no one suffers
or dies from a water or sanitation related disease 2
Slide 3
THE CHALLENGE 884 million people do not have access to safe
drinking water 2.6 billion are without adequate sanitation
facilities Every day, nearly 6,000 people (mostly children) die
from water-related illnesses 3

WATER FOR PEOPLE WFP supports sustainable water and sanitation
solutions in 11 Countries, from Asia and Africa to Central and
South America Founded in the early 1990s by the AWWA, WFP is the
organizations charity of choice. WFP Canada was founded in 1995 and
coordinates fundraising in Canada and the direction of Canadian
funds 4

WHERE WFP WORKS 5
Slide 6
THE GOALS 100% sustainable coverage of water and sanitation in
an entire Region Communities never have to ask another external
agency to fix or replace their system Service is continuous, down
time is limited to operations and maintenance and systems are
replaced with local resources Our model becomes sector policy,
others follow our model at a grander scale Water For People closes
country programs because model is adopted, applied or considered
irrelevant 6
Slide 7
THE DIFFERENCE Water For People doesnt walk into a community,
drill a well and then leave: Solutions are developed with the local
community Construction is done by the community with the support of
WFP in-country staff Locals are trained to maintain the system WFP
volunteers perform on-going monitoring of the systems, suggesting
improvement and reporting on sustainability 7
