Saint Joseph carried God’s will and embraced his fatherhood as a stewardship. May you allow God to changeyour plans to fulfill His.

Mt 1:18-24 - The child born to Joseph and Mary was named Emmanuel, which means “God is with us.” Everychild is EMMANUEL, reminding us “God is with us.” Children are signs of God’s continuing presence in our lives.

Liturgical Reflection... Christmas is very close. Everything must be ready for the great day commemoratingthe birth of our Savior. As couples approach their wedding day, the Order of Celebrating Matrimony (Number29) directs that they be directly involved in planning the liturgy for their marriage. Among the choices andoptions, they may choose from the selection of scripture readings presented by the Church; the form forexpressing their mutual consent; the choice of Nuptial Blessing; the intentions of the Universal Prayer; andmusic that is God centered. Great preparation is made in getting ready to celebrate the Sacrament ofMatrimony.

Follow That Teenager

Advent is a great time to start thinking about theword fiat. Not Fiat, the little Italian car! Rather, fiatis the Latin word meaning, “Let it be done.” In theCatholic community, it refers to the young Mary’s

response when the angel Gabriel announced shewould conceive Jesus: “May it be done to me accordingto your word” (Luke 1:38). Mary’s fiatshows her complete willingness to do God’s will, even without fully understanding what it would

mean for her. Mary’s fiat and the high prioritythe church places on it can give uspause. Was that “yes” really such abig deal? After all, the angel said,

“You will conceive.” Wasn’t Marybasically saying yes to something thatGod had already planned? Yes, Godhad already chosen her and had chosen Jesus. Yes,the angel was announcing that God had found favor

with Mary, and the tone the angel takes is not one ofasking permission. So why do we celebrate Mary’s “yes”? Becausewe recognize that whenever God brings somethingto our lives, we have the free will either to move in

rhythm with God or to resist God’s movement.Mary’s fiat shows how we should respond. Evenwhile God’s will is happening in our midst, we candeny it and move away from it. Mary did neither, choosing instead to embrace her new reality.

Did you know putting up a crèche (nativity scene) is evangelizing? Whenvisitors come over for the holidays, talk to them about your crèche and itsimportance to your family. You never know, it might inspire them to put upa crèche. Once the creche is set up, gather the family for this blessing.

Blessing Of A Christmas Manger Or Nativity Scene

In its present form the custom of displaying figures depictingthe birth of Jesus Christ owes its origin to St. Francis of Assisi, who made the Christmas crèche or manger for Christmas Eveof 1223.

The blessing of the Christmas manger or nativity scene maytake place on the Vigil of Christmas or at another suitabletime.

When the manger is set up in the home, it is appropriate thatit be blessed by a parent or another family member.

All make the sign of the cross as the leader says:

Our help is in the name of the Lord.R/. Who made heaven and earth.

One of those present or the leader reads a text of sacredScripture, for example, Luke 2:1 (lines 1-8) or Isaiah 7:10(lines 10-15, the birth of Emmanuel).

Reader: The Gospel of the Lord.R/. Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

The leader prays with hands joined:

God of every nation and people, from the very beginning of creationyou have made manifest your love:when our need for a Savior was greatyou sent your Son to be born of the Virgin Mary.To our lives he brings joy and peace, justice, mercy, and love.

Lord, bless all who look upon this manger;may it remind us of the humble birth of Jesus, and raise our thoughts to him,who is God-with-us and Savior of all,and who lives and reigns forever and ever.R/. Amen.

The final seven days before Christmas Eve, the church calls us to cry forthe coming of Jesus with special poems for each day. These poems may besaid with our meal prayer or as part of our night prayer.

Dec. 17– O Wisdom, who issued from the mouth of the Most Highreaching from beginning to end. Ordering all things mightily but tenderly,Come teach us the way of prudence.

Dec. 18– O Lord of Lords and leader of the house of Israel, who appearedto Moses in the bush’s flaming fire and gave to him the Law of Sinai, Cometo redeem us with stretched-out arms.

Dec. 19– O Root of Jesse, a standard to the peoples before whom all kingsare made, to whom all nations shall appeal, Come to deliver us; delay, please, no longer.

Dec. 20– O Key of David and scepter of the house of Israel, you open andno one dares shut, you shut and no one dares open, Come deliver thosewho are imprisoned in darkness.

Dec. 21-O Rising Dawn, redeemer of eternal light and Sun of Justice, Come, enlighten those sitting in darkness.

Dec 22.– O King of Nations and our deserved one, you the cornerstone,Come and save us whom you created.

Dec. 23– O Emmanuel, our king and lawgiver. You are the one for whom wewait, Come to save us, O Lord, our God.
