What About the 50 Days of Easter?
Most Christians are aware of, and many
participate in, the 40 days of Lent. Lent begins
on Ash Wednesday and even for those who don’t
receive ashes, there is high awareness of this
ancient practice that starts the season of Lent.
Churches have various Lenten bible studies and
other activities, and Holy Week is busy with
services leading up to Easter Sunday.
Easter Sunday arrives with loud and joyous alleluias. Worship is made
special with the fragrance of lilies, special music and celebrations worthy of
the King, all with pews full of people who may only come to church on
this one very special day. But, what happens the next Sunday?
Eastertide or Easter Season is the longest liturgical season on the Christian
calendar. But, what do we do during the 50 days that begins on Easter
Sunday and continues until Pentacost? I suggest that we use this season as
a time to reflect on what we mean by “Christ is risen!” May we use these
50 days to celebrate the risen Christ.
How do we live each day celebrating the risen Lord from Easter morning?
How do we remain passionate with the overflowing joy that we
experienced as we loudly proclaimed, “Christ is risen!”? Here are some
ideas to make the most of your Easter season, living joyously as a
resurrected people.
1. Write down where you have encountered Christ each day.
2. Make time every day to enjoy the outdoors and notice the new life
emerging.
3. Right before you go to sleep name at least 3 things for which you
are thankful.
Journey with Jesus

Note from the Pastor’s Desk continued
Children’s Corner
In April we concluded Journey with Jesus for this spring with a service project for the church of planting flowers
in the courtyard. Special thanks to Mary Kay Bailey for helping with this project. We had a devotional together
about Matthew 6 before we planted and discussed how God created the flowers and all of us for special purposes
and he loves and watches over us all!
Please also mark your calendars for our upcoming VBS which will be June 24-28. We will be “Shipwrecked” and
will venture with the kids onto an uncharted island where kids survive and thrive! Our goal for the week will be
to anchor kids in the truth that Jesus carries them through life’s storms. This year we will start VBS on a Sunday
evening and invite all the parents to participate that night with their kids then the rest of the week will continue
Monday-Thursday 9am-12 noon as usual. Please consider signing up to help and spread the word to your friends
and neighbors about this great event.
Blessings and Peace,
Deirdre

We are studying 1 John 2:12-17 "Encouragement & Warning" for this month's lesson. If you, who are readers of
The Vine, would like to join us, please do. We meet at 10:00 a.m. in the Parlor on the above date.
We not only will have a wonderful Bible study, but will have fellowship with one another at lunch at Hidden
Gardens. It is our custom to take time off for June, July and August each year, so we always enjoy our visits
together over lunch in May.
Elizabeth White, our newest member, has graciously agreed to do our Opening Prayer and Devotional this
month. We look forward to having her share God's Blessings with us.
Love and Hugs,

The Tools of a Christian
With the passing of time I have accumulated a lot of tools. Some were my father’s, some my grandfather’s and
my wife’s grandfather’s. I have bought many. Some of the older tools I have were picked up at garage sales. For
instance, I have a “Can’t Hook” that was my grandfather in-law’s that I use to roll large logs up on my log splitter.
A year or so ago I found a Peavey. That’s a can’t hook with a spike on the end for breaking up river ice. There are
many excellent old ways of doing things that still work. For instance, a triangle with sides of three, four and five
forms 90 degrees and can be used for a square. For a perfectly vertical line hang a conical weight on a string and
you have a plumb line.
After the death of Solomon, his son led the kingdom into chaos and rebellion. The kingdom divided. Ten
tribes moved north, becoming so corrupt they were lost forever. Then the two southern tribes were taken into
captivity and Nehemiah became a personal servant of King Artaxerxes.
In Nehemiah 1:1 he says, “While I was in the fortress city of Susa, 2 Hanani, one of my brothers, came with some other
men from Judah. I asked them about the Jews who had escaped and survived the captivity, and about Jerusalem. 3 They told me, “Those in the province who survived the captivity are in great trouble and shame! The wall around Jerusalem is broken down, and its gates have been destroyed by fire!”
The king had compassion for Nehemiah and released him to return and rebuild the walls and gates. With
only a handful of men and encountering much opposition Nehemiah rebuilt the walls and gates. Their tools were
ancient and crude but their work was skilled and precision. Is this a story about building walls or building a
people? Many people would be coming and place needed to be made for these new people yet to come, so, God
gave them the tools they needed.
“Lord, you have given us the tools to do your work. The tools of love, compassion, forgiveness, mercy,
kindness, faith, and your grace. Teach us to use these tools for the building of your kingdom. AMEN”
The United Methodist Men continue regular monthly meetings on the fourth Tuesday at Whataburger in Bullard.
All the men of the church are invited to join us for fellowship and ministry.
Also, the men will have a couple of fundraisers this year. One is a meal tentatively scheduled in May, the other will
be similar to the fall fundraiser last year with a meal and silent auction.

Altar Flowers Per the Worship Committee, the Altar Flower policy for the church is as follows:
Set price for altar flowers/per Sunday is $35.00 (there will be no special requests
for kinds of flowers). If a second person signs up for a Sunday, then one of two things
can happen:
1. You can split the cost of $35.00 (for the two arrangements), if first person is agreeable.
2. If you want a complete complement of flowers which can be placed on the organ or piano (not the altar),
you’ll need to make your own arrangements with your florist, including payment.
The flower calendar is in Harper Hall (by doors going to courtyard). When signing up
for flowers:
1. Choose a date.
2. Print clearly the name of person/persons in “Memory or Honor of”
3. Print clearly the name of person/persons giving the flowers.
Please note that you can take the altar flowers home; the green plastic containers that the flowers are in need to
stay at the church. If you have any questions/concerns, contact the church office (903) 894-6762.
