Last month, an Ellicottville Elementary classroom took the new technology of the day and embedded it into a standard classroom lesson. April Donoghue, a third grade teacher, has been teaching for 20 years, 13 of them for Ellicottville Central School. So, with her experience in education, Donoghue decided to give a New York State requirement new life. The requirement stated that for 3rd grade social sciences, teachers needed to discuss different communities around the world. So, with that in mind, Donoghue choose to teach this to her social studies students through Skype. Before this new experience began, the students had used this technology once before to communicate with people in Michigan, but this time it was

Sales Tax ExemptionSen. Young Pleased With Reinstatement Of Sales Tax “Exemption”

ALBANY – Senator Catharine Young (R,C,I – 57th District) is applauding the restoration of a long-awaited state sales tax exemption for all clothes and shoes less than $110. Sales tax varies by state with New York setting its state sales tax at four percent. Counties receive at least an additional three percent ofsales tax. The state will now exempt its portion of the sales tax, which Senator Young said has been in place for far too long. “This tax hike on clothing was put in place by New York City politicians when they controlled

all of state government and raised taxesand spending by $14 billion, hurting taxpayers and stifling economic growth. I voted against their outrageous tax-and-spend policies, includingthis sales tax increase. This exemption is a common sense approach to relieving our overburdened taxpayers ,” Senator Young said. The full exemption for purchases of shoes and clothes under $110 will go into effect April 1. It is an extension of the 2011 tax phase-out thatoffered tax relief for clothing purchases under $55.

“Increasing the exemption level to $110 is a welcome break to our hard-working residents. It is a critical step for our families who have struggled to afford essential clothing and footwear throughout the economicdownturn. Not only will the exemption foster a positive environment for economic growth and level the playing field for our retailers, it willencourage our consumers to purchase from their neighborhood stores and shopping centers,” Senator Young added.

Salamanca Rail Museum2012 Season Opening on April 1, 2012

Journey into the past and experience a fully restored passenger depot constructed in 1912 by the Buffalo, Rochester and Pittsburgh Railway. Through artifacts, photographs and video presentations, you will experience an era over 90 years ago, when rail was the primary means of transportation from city to city. The rich red oak wainscoting and two story sky-lit ceiling of the building’s main lobby reflects an era of simple elegance. The ticket office, which is authentic down to the office furniture and telegraph keys, gives the feel of a time of bowler hats and bustle dresses, of traveling business people in

It’s that time of year when the streets get a little emptier, the snow a little dirtier, and it’s a little easier to get served in your favorite pub or restaurant.

It feels a little sad considering how amazing winter is around here. Our village has been brimming over with happy people enjoying the ski season, unbelievably fun events, and all things good with Ellicottville in the colder months. For many, springtime just comes a little too slow around here, so they head off to sunnier climes in search of some beach, rays and lazing by the pool. I myself took wing last week, a nice surprise from one who cares. We went to Miami and I finally got to see South Beach first hand. And what an amazing place it is. It’s hard to imagine some people actually live down there – the lifestyle is truly something to behold. Eighty degrees everyday, (yes, I got a wee bit crispy – ouch!), fantastic clubs and restaurants, pretty people and as beautiful a beach as you’ve ever seen. We had a wonderful time and this trip will absolutely tide me

over nicely while waiting for our own spring to arrive. And it will arrive, hopefully sooner than later! Still, it was good to come back home. Ellicottville’s like your favorite cozy sweater – you just can’t wait for chilly weather so you can slip it on. Florida’s a great place to visit, but I surely would not want to live there. No mountains, no maple trees, no deer running around in your back yard, no beautifully dark, starry nights… I think it’s the anticipation of “what’s next?” around here which keeps people coming back for more. It’s a very special place. So, dear readers, do what you need to do to get through this transition period, always know this – you are in the best place to be at the best time of your life. Until next week… JZ

School UpdateTechnology in the Classroom: How Skyping Can Connect People

By megan o’donnellSt. Bonaventure univerSity

Before this new experience began, the students had used this technology once before to communicate with people in Michigan, but this time it was

to learn about different types of communities, such as urban, suburban and rural communities around the world, Donoghue said. After the students learned some background, Donoghue set up a day to Skype with 2010 Ellicottville Central School graduate, Anna Pierce. Pierce currently attends SUNY Fredonia but studied abroad this semester in Limerick, Ireland. While there, Pierce took classes on Irish culture, philosophy and math education. Pierce is studying to become a high school math teacher. Donoghue paired up with Mrs. Kaminiski, a computer teacher, to help the class explore maps of Ireland on the Internet, Donoghue said. To further explore the Irish culture before speaking with Pierce, Donoghue had her students study the flag, look at some of the popular tourist

destinations and read about traditional Irish music and dance, she said. “(Also,) The students worked independently to each create two questions to ask Anna during the interview,” Donoghue said. “We were also teaching them (the students) to use Microsoft Word to practice typing skills and to use clip art to add to the document.” During the Skype call with Pierce, each child in the class was able to ask her the questions they had prepared the week before.Throughout the Skype call, Pierce also told the students about the differences between studying in the US and in Ireland, as well telling the class some of the highlights from her time abroad so far, Donoghue said. A few weeks after the class Skyped with Pierce, she came to the school and answered other questions the students came up with after they initially spoke with her. Through this lesson, students not only had the chance to learn about Ireland, and communities in general, but they were able to learn it in a new way like never before. Donoghue’s class was able to bring a bit of Ireland to Ellicottville through a popular new tool that now isn’t just for bringing people together from across oceans, but is now allowing students to learn directly from where they are studying from the safety and comfort of their own classrooms.

The ticket office, which is authentic down to the office furniture and telegraph keys, gives the feel of a time of bowler hats and bustle dresses, of traveling business people in

a rapidly expanding early 20th century economy. The Rail Museum building was acquired in 1980, a vandalized vacant shell that had stood idle for over 20 years. Using a combination of private donations, government funds, and volunteer labor, the building was brought back to its original appearance. From the brick walled baggage room to the multi-windowed “Ladies Retiring Room”, everything in the building is either a restored original or an exact duplicate based on the original architectural plans. The museum exhibits show nostalgic railroad pieces with an emphasis on the three railroads

that served the region: the Erie, the Baltimore and Ohio (BR & P), and the Pennsylvania Railroads. Admission to the Museum is FREE, however, donations are appreciated. The Museum is open Monday through Saturday from 10am to 5pm and Sundays from 12pm to 5pm. Closed Mondays in April, October and December. Closed months of January, February and March. The Museum is wheelchair accessible. Guided tours for groups are available by prior arrangement. Call 716-945-3133. Salamanca’s Rail Museum Opens on Sunday, April 1, 2012 from 10am to 5pm.

Letter to the EditorKudos to ECS Performance, “Damn Yankees”

What an absolute treat it was for me to see Ellicottville Central School’s performance of the musical, “Damn Yankees” at the Salamanca High School Auditorium last Friday night. I took me back to March of 1956 when I saw my first musical on Broadway, namely “Damn YUankees’, starring Gwen Verdon, who played Lola and

Ray Walston, who played Appplegate. These young boys and girls were simply terrific….all of them. I knew the plot and half the words to the songs. The singing and overall production was outstanding. What a terrific bunch of young people…and let’s not forget the orchestra…Broadway all the way!!!

With a glitch or two in the portable mikes, (these can be tricky and sensitive) these kids handled it with ;poise and professionalism. Kudos to the school staff who guided these talented students all the way. Can’t wait until next year!

Relationships FormedSBU formalizes its relationship with the Franciscan Friars of HNP

St. Bonaventure University and the Franciscan Friars of Holy Name Province formalized their historic relationship on Friday by signing their first-ever memorandum of understanding. Holy Name Province traces its roots to Franciscan missionaries who came to America mid-1800s to minister to a flood of European immigrants. It was one of those missionaries, Fr. Pamfilo da Magliano, O.F.M., who was instrumental in the founding of St. Bonaventure in 1858. The memorandum of understanding specifies the mutual desire of the university and the province to advance the educational mission of the university in a manner that respects and preserves its Catholic-Franciscan character. While the relationship between the two has endured for more than 150 years, it was

never defined in writing. “This formalizes what has always been our understanding,” said Sr. Margaret Carney, O.S.F., university president. “It’s a commitment by the University Board of Trustees and the Holy Name Province to continue that relationship.” Also Friday, university and province officials participated in a ceremony to rename an addition to Friedsam Memorial Library that holds the rare book collection of the Franciscan Institute. The addition, which opened in 2008, is now known as Holy Name Library for the Franciscan Institute. St. Bonaventure is home to the Franciscan Institute, the pre-eminent center in North America of teaching, research and publication on the history, spirituality and intellectual life of the Franciscan movement. It’s collection of rare books

has been described by the National Endowment for the Humanities as “a unique national asset of great value to American humanistic scholarship.” Fr. John O’Connor, O.F.M., provincial minister of Holy Name Province, blessed the addition. “An important part of our tradition as Franciscans is the intellectual tradition, so it is appropriate that we come together today to celebrate the blessing of this library, which in so many ways stands for the excellence that is the education endeavor that Franciscans have been about for over 800 years,” he said. The university’s Board of Trustees agreed to rename the addition in recognition of Holy Name Province’s longstanding support of the Franciscan Institute’s scholarship and service.

Breaking GroundSt. Bonaventure officials break ground on Swan Business Center

ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y., March 23, 2012 — On a warm spring afternoon, St. Bonaventure University officials broke ground on the William E. & Ann L. Swan Business Center, a new home for the School of Business that’s expected to open in the fall of 2013. Ann Swan donated $3 million to the building campaign in honor of her late husband, William E. Swan, ’69, a longtime Western New York business leader and philanthropist, and a dedicated university alumnus and Board of Trustees chair. Making note of the “magical run we’ve had at St. Bonaventure the last few weeks” in basketball, Robert Daugherty, ’77, trustee and chair of the building campaign, talked about the coaches (campaign steering committee), team (fundraising staff) and fans (donors) who were critical to fulfilling the dream of the Swan Business Center. Daugherty also spoke about inspiration and luck, ingredients often vital in sports. “Our inspiration came from a very good friend, John Watson,” Daugherty said, fighting back tears. “He soldiered with me every step of the way on this. Thank you, John.” Watson, who spent 35 years at the university, was just weeks from retiring as School of Business dean when he collapsed and died of a heart

attack last April while attending a reunion in York, Pa. Daugherty said luck came in the form of Ann Swan. “She was looking for a meaningful way to honor her husband, so we got very lucky,” he said. “Her contribution gave us life, gave us the wind behind our sails to make this happen.” The 26,000-square-foot Swan Business Center will feature a financial services lab with electronic ticker tape, a corporate boardroom, state-of-the-art classrooms, break-out areas, spaces for student collaboration, team building, and faculty research, a dean’s suite, innovative technology uses, and a serious commitment to sustainability. “With sustainable design elements and environmentally friendly features, the new building will fully embrace our Franciscan heritage in honoring our environment and will be the most ‘green’ building on the St. Bonaventure campus,” said Brenda McGee, senior vice president for finance and administration at St. Bonaventure. The center will be built south of Friedsam Library, between Reilly Center and Plassmann Hall, and will create a new quad to promote further development of community within the campus. Project bids were delivered Thursday, and “digging will begin in a

couple of weeks,” well ahead of schedule, McGee said. “This is just one more in a string of great occasions that’s brought us together to celebrate over the last month,” said Dr. Michael Fischer, provost and vice president for Academic Affairs. “What a great day for us.” The university is in the midst of a $15 million campaign for the creation of the new building: $10 million for the construction of the business center; $4 million in endowments for faculty and programmatic support; and $1 million in endowment for building sustainability. To date, more than $13 million has been raised. St. Bonaventure University is one of the smallest institutions accredited by the Association for the Advancement of Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB), a distinction only 5 percent of business schools have achieved worldwide. A 1969 graduate of St. Bonaventure, Mr. Swan served as chair, president and chief executive officer of First Niagara Financial Group and First Niagara Bank, which he joined in 1987 after 18 years with M&T Bank. He died in 2003. Donations to the campaign may be made by visiting www.sbu.edu/bullishonbusiness/donate or by calling (800) 664-1273.

Pictured at groundbreaking ceremonies Friday are (from left) Michael Fischer, Ph.D., Vice President for Academic Affairs; Carol Fischer, Ph.D., dean of the School of Business; Brenda McGee, Senior Vice President for Finance and Administration; Sr. Margaret Carney, O.S.F., University President; Robert Daugherty, University Trustee and Chair of the School of Business fundraising campaign; Ann Swan, philanthropist and wife of the late William Swan, whom the building will be named after; Sue Watson, a former SBU faculty member whose husband, the late John G. Watson, was a revered faculty member and dean of the School of Business; John R. McGinley Jr., Chair of the Board of Trustees; Jeffrey Peterson, Ph.D., Chair of the Finance Department in the School of Business; and Raymond Dee, Vice Chair of the Board of Trustees.

Women In Sports DaySBU To Host 26th Annual National Girls and Women In Sports Day

By criStaBell ramdial, ’13 ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. — St. Bonaventure University will host the annual National Girls and Women in Sport’s Day Tuesday, April 17, to celebrate the participation of successful female athletes. St. Bonaventure’s women’s athletics teams will be working with their coaches to provide sport clinics and mentoring to dozens of area female high school athletes. Clinics for the day include softball, lacrosse, soccer, tennis, swimming exercises, rugby, cross-country, basketball and a fitness challenge. Students will have the opportunity to choose two of the clinics.High schools scheduled to participate are Allegany-Limestone, Bath, Bradford, Bolivar-Richburg, Olean, Archbishop Walsh Academy, Hinsdale, Portville, Lutheran-Jamestown, Southwestern, Austin, Frewsburg and South Park.

“When these girls are able to meet off the court in a friendly environment, relationships are created, and that’s really the best part of the day,” said Dr. Paula Scraba, an associate professor in the Department of Physical Education at St. Bonaventure who organizes the annual event. This year’s keynote speaker is Andrea Montalbano, an author, coach, journalist, and a Harvard University Hall of Fame soccer athlete. Her visit is being sponsored by the School of Journalism and Mass Communication and the Career and Professional Readiness Center. Kate Dillon Hogan, associate vice president of enrollment; Steve Watson, director of athletics; and Dr. Joe Zimmer, dean of the School of Education, are all scheduled to make welcome statements. This is a Visiting Scholars Committee-sponsored event, and is made possible with assistance from St. Bonaventure’s Athletics Department, Department of Military Science, Department of

Physical Education, School of Education and Aramark Dining Services. Dining arrangements for the event have been made possible with the collaboration of Aramark and St. Bonaventure students by allowing students to donate a meal to a visiting athlete. “If it wasn’t for the support and cooperation of all these departments then this day would not be possible,” said Scraba. The National Girls and Women in Sports Coalition was started in 1987 in remembrance of Flo Hyman, an Olympic volleyball player who died 1986 while competing in a volleyball tournament in Japan. According to its website, the NGWSD aims to, “develop and deliver equitable and quality sport opportunities for all girls and women through relevant research, advocacy, leadership development, educational strategies, and programming in a manner that promotes social justice and change.”

Seneca Hickory Stick OpensSeneca Hickory Stick Golf Course First To Open In 2012

LEWISTON, NY – With Western New York on pace to have one of its mildest winters in history and temperatures already in the 60s for mid-March, Seneca Hickory Stick Golf Course has opened early to let golfers get a jump on the golf season at one of the finest courses in the region. To add to the excitement, officials will offer special rates through the end of April as well as a new Seneca Hickory Stick Loyalty Card for golfers interested in saving throughout the year. Special early-opening rates at Seneca Hickory Stick Golf Course are $44 for Monday through Thursday and $54 for Friday through Sunday, now through April 30. Rates include 18-hole green fees with cart and practice balls prior to play. Starting May 1, in-season rates of $59 weekdays and $69 weekends (Friday through Sunday) will take effect. In addition, golfers can save all year with the new Seneca Hickory Stick Loyalty Card. Now available for just $29, the card provides golfers one dozen golf balls, use of the NYSGA handicap system for one year, $5 off every round played at Seneca Hickory Stick Golf Course during the year and a $25 round of golf during a designated birthday month. Seneca Hickory Stick Golf Course opened Sunday, March 11, 2012, for its third season of play. The course turns two years old this June and already

earned two industry honors: No. 6 “Best New Golf Course” by Golf Magazine and one of the 2012 “Best Casino Courses” in the U.S. by Golfweek. The $25 million Seneca Hickory Stick Golf Course is located in Lewiston, NY – just minutes away from Seneca Niagara Casino & Hotel in Niagara Falls USA – and is yet another masterpiece from world-renowned golf course architect Robert Trent Jones II. Last year, a new clubhouse and restaurant – Seneca Hickory Grill – opened at an overlook point near the links-style shared-green and lake at the ninth and 18th holes. Seneca Hickory Grill will officially open this season on April 15, and limited food and beverage will be available until then. Seneca Hickory Stick Golf Course offers 257 acres of challenging terrain with picturesque Scottish-looking heather grass that accentuates fairways and greenside bunkers, as well as five sets of tee boxes that provide golfers a choice in length and difficulty from 5,395 to 7,026 yards. The course is open to the public but has the feel of a private club, with “member for a day” service levels and pricing that includes golf cars, greens fees and use of the practice facility prior to play. It also is an ideal venue for golf tournaments, nonprofit fundraisers and business outings. Seneca Hickory Stick Golf

Business TrackElkdale Country Club: Family-friendly Local Course Worth the Trip

Up Close & PersonalMr. Walter Holland Reflects on His Son’s Success

deniSe royerFreelance writer

Some people hear “country club” and immediately think of plaid shorts and stuffy old men. If you are one of those people, head over to Elkdale Country Club, located in the scenic hills of Salamanca, and you may be pleasantly surprised to have this notion challenged. This semi-private 18-hole golf course is a far cry from the cultural stereotype and is truly a nice, welcoming club in the country. On a recent outing during this unseasonably warm March, the good folks at Elkdale graciously allowed a motley foursome consisting of myself, my husband and our two children (ages five and two) to take a little tour of the course. No one on the course batted an eye – in fact many smiled and waved - as we made our way through the back nine. Not a golfer myself – a so-called “golf widow” actually – even I can appreciate the beauty and serenity of this place, if not the test of one’s golfing abilities. The front nine at Elkdale was built in 1927 and is cut through varied terrain and mature trees. The back nine was added in the early 1960s and is a bit longer with larger greens. The layout is designed to provide an interesting challenge for players of all skill levels and the modern tee-to-green watering system ensures maximum playability throughout the season.

According to PGA professional Jack Widger, course highlights include Hole #4, a par 3 which wins for beauty and difficulty; Hole # 15, a par 5 which wins for its length; and Hole #16, which wins for intimidation. The men’s course rating is currently 69.3 and the slope rating is 120. Not just for golfers, Elkdale Country Club is true to its name, complete with pool, lounge facility and excellent dining. The bar and restaurant are not yet open full time, but while the warm weather sticks around, the course is open on a day-to-day basis. The special early-spring rate is $31 for 18

holes and cart or $21 for 9 holes and a cart. The rate will change once the course gets a complete spring manicure. Elkdale is located on Route 353, halfway between Salamanca and Little Valley and just 10 minutes from Ellicottville. A semi-private course, public play is welcome every day of the week with a reservation during regular operating hours. For more information or to book a tee time, call the golf shop at (716) 945-5553. Or just stop by for a visit and the helpful staff will be sure to answer any questions about the club, membership, league information and more.

Olean’s Annual Home Show on April 13th-15th

By nicholaS pircio95.7 Fm, wpig

Has it really been twenty years? Back in April of 1992, seventh grader Walter Holland III of Ellicottville spelled the word “virulent” correctly to become the Western New York spelling champion. The following month, Walter advanced to Washington D-C to take part in the National Spelling Bee, where he finished among the top ten. The occasion marks one of the many of young Walter’s many achievements noted in local media in the years to follow, including a return to the National Spelling Bee in 1993. His father, Walter Holland, has lived in Ellicottville for 21 years. He remembers fondly the accomplishments of both his sons, Walter and Philippe. He recalls, “I remember the first year, in 1992, when the parade turned out. And they made it quite an occasion.” Moving ahead to 2011, Mr. Holland happened to be visiting a Buffalo hospital. He picked up a copy of the Buffalo News in the cafeteria and saw an article about the Buffalo spelling bee. “It mentioned my son’s name, because a young person had done quite well last year from this locality. It (the article) said the last person to achieve this was Wally Holland.” Mr. Holland went on to say that he read this article and saw his son’s name, “Right out of the blue!” He grew excited, and wanted to discuss it straight away with everyone. “I think it’s a normal human feeling.

Walter Holland, has lived in Ellicottville for 21 years. He remembers fondly the accomplishments of both his sons, Walter and Philippe.

And when I read that to myself, wow! They’re talking about my son. It was quite surprising.” Young Wally went on to enter M-I-T, married, and now lives with his wife in Boston, Massachusetts. Mr. Holland keeps plenty of memorabilia on hand from the spelling bee days, carefully laminated and preserved. Of his son’s accomplishments, “He earned it. And in my opinion, he’s very gifted. And you’ve got to have a

bit of luck as well. Living in Ellicottville, any acclaim we can get for some of these small places is nice.” Mr. Holland feels the same way about the sports programs at Ellicottville Central School where, “The two soccer coaches have done a wonderful job. It’s nice to see them get the acclaim.” He’s also optimistic about the town’s future. “I think it’s going to develop more, especially with the way Holiday Valley is looking to the future.”

Olean Home ShowOlean’s Annual Home Show on April 13th-15th

This year, the theme is ‘Imagine the Possibilities…SHOP LOCALLY’ with champagne color. Nicole Cook, a home show committee member, created a show logo. story and photos by John thomas

staFF writer

As appealing as log cabin homes are, frequently they feel like they’re missing something. This log cabin, standing in a forested setting just outside of Franklinville, has just about everything. First off the land; just shy of nine acres, and mostly forest, gives plenty of room to spread out. A private pond lies just below the house, and the view looks over to the distant mountains. Inside only the hardwood floors, knotty pine walls and open beams suggest a log cabin. In the living room a huge stone fireplace warms the room. The chimney rises to

meet the cathedral ceiling high overhead. The kitchen features up-scale appliances and granite counter-tops. The master bedroom sports its own pellet stove, and has a huge stone and tile bath. French doors open up to a screened in back deck. In summer the owners open up the French doors to be cooled by the evening breeze. Up stairs is a large study that would be the envy of any country club mansion. A second bedroom and bath are here as well. The basement is spacious and unfinished, ready for any amount of customization. The house mechanics are here as well, including the radiant floor heat for the first floor. There is a timer wired to the electrical outlets

on the outside of the second floor dormers to make installing Christmas lights easier; such is the attention to detail. The back deck holds the hot tub, barbeque and outside dining. It looks over the pond, just down the hill. Just across the driveway is a barn with a separate two-car garage. On the top floor is an apartment with its own kitchen and bath. The barn is wired with 50 amp service for recharging the RV. Franklinville is only twenty minutes away from Ellicottville with its skiing, restaurants, and golf. The only thing missing here is you. For more information on this home contact Sandy Goode Assoc ate Broker at Team VP ERA Vacation Properties at 716-378-2733.

The serene setting for this log cabin includes just under nine acres of mostly for-ested land and a pond.

The open beam ceiling and hickory cabinets add warmth to the kitchen with its up-scale appliances.

A field stone fire place warms the living room. The up-per right shows the railing for the upstairs study.

The barn has a second two car garage and an apartment on the upper floor. It has 50 amp service for recharging the motor home.

Local Arts At RiskElementary Art Programs at Risk

So many of our regional elementary art programs are in jeopardy due to very real budget crises at the state and local levels. As you contemplate your school budget decisions, please remember that elementary art is much more than making pretty pictures. Elementary art, taught by accredited art teachers, is essential to students. In fact, students with an education rich in the arts have higher GPAs and standardized test scores, lower drop-out rates, and even better attitudes about community service, regardless of socio-economic status. While not state-mandated, elementary art belongs in the curriculum. If you have questions about this issue, or would like assistance in making a case for the arts, please don’t hesitate to contact the art council at [email protected].

Eye health is not isolated from general health. According to some researchers, most eye diseases are signs of deeper health problems, such as stress, free radical damage, diabetes and circulatory disorders. Poor nutrition plays a major role in creating the health problems that lead to a deterioration of the eye health. Antioxidant nutrients that counteract free radical damage are essential to healthy eyes. That is why the eyes love the array of vegetable and fruit colors available to us. The purples, yellows, green, blues, red and other bright colors found in fruits and vegetables are full of these nutrients called antioxidants. I personally like Thai-go juice for its amazing combination of super antioxidant ingredients. Nutrition wise each bottle equals 100 bowls of blueberries and 200 bowls of spinach. It contains high amounts of natural vitamins A, C and E through a selection of the highest ORAC

content fruits like pomegranate, mangosteen, acai berry and goji, among nine more fruits. When vitamins A, C, and E are together they create a strong defense for the eyes, they keep fats in the eye from oxidizing and prevent the eye from dehydrating by helping in tear formation. Adequate amounts of vitamin E may reduce the risk of cataract production. It also works with bioflavonoids to inhibit macular degeneration. Vitamin C on the other hand, helps protect the capillaries nourishing the eye tissue. It reduces pressure in glaucoma (the second leading cause of blindness), reduces cataract formation and helps rebuild the cornea when it has been damaged.Herbalist Steve Horne says that many of the eye disorders such as macular degeneration, cataracts and glaucoma are probably caused by free radical damage to the eyes. One cause of this damage he says can be the ultraviolet radiation present in natural light, but chemical toxins, cardiovascular inflammation and blood sugar problems are also contributing factors. The eyes like the brain need the good fats to be healthy too. Omega -3 essential fatty acids, especially DHA, are critical to eye health. DHA helps with communicating information from the eyes to the brain. Good fats also lubricate the eyes and keep them from drying out. Good sources of essential fatty acids for the eyes include deep ocean fish, flax seed oil, walnuts and dark green, leafy vegetables (also sources of carotenoids for the eyes). Super Omega-3 EPA,

Krill Oil or DHA are great supplements to promote eye health. There are other two essential carotenoids for healthy eyes. These are lutein and zeaxanthin. Lutein is a yellow pigment found in green leafy vegetables like kale, chard and spinach. It is also found in egg yolks. Lutein is found in the macula (the center of the retina) and has been shown to counteract free radical damage caused by blue and ultraviolet light. It protects against macular degeneration and inhibits the formation of cataracts (the number one cause of blindness in the elderly). Zeaxanthin is also a yellow pigment found naturally in green vegetables, eggs and yellow corn. This pigment protects the macula from light damage and inhibits cataract formation. Both of these carotenoids are found in the herbal combination called Perfect Eyes. People with cataracts are deficient in glutathione, a major antioxidant in the liver and eyes. N-Acetyl Cysteine(an intracellular antioxidant) helps increase glutathione levels, it is also an ingredient in Perfect Eyes. Born on July 26, 1929, she was the daughter of the late Daniel J. and Marie Adams Flanigan and sister to the late Brian Flanigan, all of Salamanca. Alta attended St. Patrick’s Parochial School and graduated with the Class of 1947 from Salamanca High School where she excelled as a student and distinguished herself as an athlete, student leader, actress and singer. Then and throughout her life, she was known for her beautiful singing voice, curly blond hair and piercing blue eyes. Alta married the love of her life, “Johnnie” Elsen, on May 8, 1948. She and her husband were founding members of the “Mr. and Mrs. Club” of St. Patrick’s Church in Salamanca where she was a devoted and active parishioner her entire life. She was a member of the Altar and Rosary Society and could always be counted upon to fervently work her rosary beads in prayer over the wants and needs of others. Alta was

generous in spirit and time, giving of herself to many causes and organizations throughout her lifetime, including several years as a volunteer at the Salamanca Public Library. In addition to raising her four children, Alta worked for many years outside the home as a switchboard operator for Bell Telephone Company. She later applied her love of books and passion for reading to her work as a Teacher Aide in the Junior-Senior High School Library for the Salamanca City Central School District. She very much enjoyed the company of young people and proudly watched a generation of Salamanca kids grow up before retiring in 1991 after twelve years in this role. Alta was an accomplished artist, creating works in various media and materials. She painted, knitted, sewed, and worked with intricate crafts. She loved to hike the hillside above the Sweetwater Spring in the Allegany State Park searching out various mosses and berries for her lovely terrariums. She also scoured the hills and trails around her home for the wild blackberries that she picked by hand and transformed into the incredible homemade pies for which she was widely noted. Alta was a member of Elkdale Country Club for most of her life and in her younger years, she was an avid golfer and skier, but she remained a sports fan her entire life. She enjoyed cheering the high school sports teams, watching her Buffalo Bills and following basketball, especially college teams. She was widely traveled and along with her husband and children, she enjoyed many adventures around the world. She and her husband were perhaps best known for their talent on the dance floor and until recent years, they continued to dance at every opportunity. Alta’s greatest pleasure in

life was her family. She will be deeply missed by her children and their spouses: Stephen J. and Virginia Elsen of Ventura, CA; David G. and Geri Anne Elsen of Ellicottville, NY; Daniel F. Elsen of Sausalito, CA; Mary Katherine “Sam” Elsen and Michael J. Naimoli of Strafford, PA. Alta was the beloved grandmother to her two precious and adoring grandchildren, Sean and Maya Naimoli. She is also survived by her sister-in-law, Betty Elsen; beloved niece and Goddaughter, Elaine Elsen; and nieces and nephews Jean and Frank Pascarella, Kathie Elsen Hobbs, Joe and Damie Elsen as well as many beautiful grand and great-grandnieces and nephews. A special place in Alta’s heart was reserved for her grandnephew, Greg Spako, and his significant other, Shawna Gursky, whose unfailing love, compassion and concern gave her great joy and comfort. Alta was a warm and compassionate person who loved to laugh. Her sense of humor never left her and despite all that she endured in recent weeks, she remained characteristically kind, gracious and dignified. She leaves behind countless friends, near and far, as well as a devoted group of caregivers who made it possible for her to live happily and comfortably in her own home up until her recent illness. The family wishes to invite all friends and relatives to join them for a Memorial Service and Celebration of Alta’s life on Sunday, May 27th, 2012 at Elkdale Country Club beginning at 1:00 PM. Alta supported many charitable causes throughout her life and she would be honored to have memorial contributions made in her name to the Salamanca Public Library, the Salamanca Professional Firefighters Association or to the charity of your choice.

It’s not too early for vacationers to be drawing up plans for the summer months. Many will want to stay close to home, but perhaps do something out of the ordinary. Toward that aim, The Seneca Allegany Casino and Hotel will be hosting four days where shoppers can check out the latest in recreational vehicles. The first-ever RV Show held at the Casino takes place from Thursday, March 29th through Sunday April 1st. Show hours will be 1 to 9 p.m. on Thursday, 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, and from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday. Jim Colton of Colton RV is excited to showcase his line of vehicles at the show. Why come to the Casino? Colton says, “It’s something we considered, given the fact that there are many families who are campers in the Southern Tier of New York and the Northern Tier of Pennsylvania. We saw that as an opportunity from a marketing perspective, to grow our business in that area.” Activities will be held indoors at the Events Center, and outdoors as well. Colton RV plans to have forty units indoors and forty units outdoors. “Indoors, primarily we’ll have travel trailers and tent campers. Outdoors, we’ll have fifth

wheels and motor homes.” Colton notes that business for recreational vehicles has been very good. He says, “2011 was a very good year. Families are spending more time vacationing locally, versus travelling (further from home). They see the opportunity with an RV to travel a short distance, and enjoy family camping.” RVs come in all shapes and sizes, ranging from small tent campers, which Colton says are “very affordable,” to travel trailers, fifth wheels, and motor homes. Some of the vehicles on display will be pre-owned, but mostly the show will feature the new 2012 models. Any RV purchase will come with a free, two-night camping package at any New York State park. Colton says that the package includes a cooler, “That will be filled with different things that you would use on a camping weekend. Plus we’ll

give you two free passes to a New York State campground.” Visitors to the RV Show will also find an RV towing seminar on Saturday morning at 10:30. “The seminar will instruct people on the safety features of hitching your vehicle. It’s going to be a very important seminar, seeing as a lot of people will enjoy the safety features that we’ll talk about.” Jim Colton is not worried about the higher gas prices. He notes, “It did not affect the business at all in 2011. Again, I think people are spending family vacations close to home. Owning an RV is a great way to do it, and it’s not expensive.” There is a hotline number for more information about the Seneca Allegany Casino RV Show. Calling 1-888-491-3388 will connect you with a Colton RV manager. Or link up with the website at www.coltonrv.com.

paved parking lot. The front door which now faces Monroe Street will then face East towards the Wingate Hotel. The new foundation for the building will elevate the restaurant four feet off the ground because the area is a flood plane. Saturday will be the last day of service in the current location. The building is scheduled to be lifted and moved sometime between April 10th and 12th. The only things that will be taken out of the building are the glassware, plates, tables and chairs. Other

than that, the building is moving “as is.” Sometime between the middle of May and the first of June the restaurant will open in its new spot. Owner Icky Zafar has for a long time wanted a more central location, and the Kafe will now be accessible from Washington Street. The restaurant will also be redone completely on the inside. Manager Tom Williams says its going to have a “totally different look.” Mr. Zafar will be installing a full service bar, and the Kafe will be repainted throughout the inside. Not only will the new foundation elevate the building four feet in the air, but it will go four feet underground to create a new prep area for the

Kafe. New landscaping and a larger outdoor patio will be put around the building. The restaurant will have a new location, parking, landscaping, and new interior look, and the menu will be brand new as well. Mr. Williams promised to keep the Kabob emphasis on Mediterranean and Greek food, but he says there will be exciting new dishes, and a new line of their famous kabobs. Although Mr. Zafar was not available for comment, Tom Williams spoke for him saying, “Icky’s looking forward to it,” with more than just a little excitement in his own voice. If you would like to follow the progress of the move, you can see it on their web site, kabobkafe.net

The building on the corner of Washington and Monroe is one of Ellicottvilles oldest buildings. First built in 1885, by Civil War veteran Alexander Bird, it was for a while known as the Bird Block. Fortunately, one of its successive owners renamed it The Marketplace. Miguel Azcarate and his wife and business partner Kimberly Reading own the ski shop Mud Sweat & Gears on Washington, and over the Spring and Summer will be moving their shop into The Marketplace. They bought the building five years ago but had held off making any move until they felt the time was

right. A year ago they notified the current shops in the building that MS&G would be taking over the space this Spring. Kim says, “fortunately everybody has secured a new location.” It’s only a coincidence that Double Diamond closed it’s doors in the fall, but that allowed Gado Gado and Natures Remedy to move into that space. The toy store and A Touch of Ellicottville have also found new locations. The rather abrupt end to the ski season has provided Miguel and Kim with the perfect time to move. They are planning rather extensive renovations for the space. The ground floor will be retail space, and the basement will be warehouse. In store warehouse space is something they’ve never had. Phil Vogt will be doing the re-modeling of the interior and creating what Kim calls “a contemporary yet rustic aesthetic.” The new location will give MS&G more

than 1500 square feet of retail space; “a lot more space” as Kim says. The larger space will allow them to spread their merchandise out a bit more, but they also expect to expand in store services. Included will be a new tuning and service center, and a high performance demo and rental center. They will be expanding their outerwear and lifestyle brands of ski clothes. But, perhaps the biggest advantage the new space will provide is off street parking. They expect to open in the new location sometime this August. With so many businesses in the Village playing “storefront musical chairs” the returning ski crowd may not recognize the Village. But, every business that is re-locating is excited about the change. Perhaps Kim puts it best when she says, “When people come back in the Fall, the Village is going to have a whole new feel to it. It’s really exciting. I like progress.”

★ ★ Sudoku Challenge ★ ★To solve a Sudoku puzzle, place a number into each box so that each row across, each column down, and each small 9-box square within the larger diagram (there are 9 of these) will contain every number from 1 through 9. In other words, no number will appear more than once in any row, column, or smaller 9-box square. Working with the numbers already given as a guide, complete each diagram with the missing numbers that will lead to the correct solution.

Good luck!
