Just when I thought I had reached the peak of my summer fun, I found a whole new level to take it to! Yesterday I had the opportunity to fly over our beautiful Enchanted Mountains and Chautauqua Lake with a talented stunt pilot. The pilot’s marvelous stunt plane allowed me a unique view of our region very few folks get to see. And I must admit, I had my eyes open most of the time… As we swirled, twirled, climbed and plummeted through the sky, my brain worked overtime to identify places and landmarks I knew. For as beautiful our region is from the ground, the aerial

view is simply spectacular! The green forest canopy over the hills and mountains was very striking, and the crystal blue waters of Chautauqua Lake – breathtaking. The boats all looked like tiny dots until my pilot took us in for a closer look. Such fun! I’ve always known how fortunate we are to live in such a scenic part of the state, but getting above it all really gives one an indelible impression of its true beauty. We should all thank our lucky stars to be in this place at this particular time. Enjoy every day to its fullest! Untilnextweek…JZ

leTTer TO spONsOrsDear Sponsor: Our Rotary Club in Ellicottville recognized a need in the Ellicottville School District and surrounding Cattaraugus County. In 2005 we established the Rotary Club of Ellicottville Foundation for Youth to address the needs of the less fortunate in the Ellicottville area. The Foundation in that same year established a permanent Youth Center in the new Library Community Center. Beyond the Youth center we sponsor and support a number of worthy causes which are on the attached sheet. In 2010 we established Family Support for Ellicottville, which provides needed support for those families who need help from time to time, be it medical or social support. Our Club officially “kicked off” the funding for the Youth Center on June 25, 2004 with a Celebrity Dinner and Golf Tournament and followed it up with a second event in 2005. With the passing of Michael Kerns we decided to dedicate an annual dinner to his memory

and with your help the past six events were a tremendous success. In 2011 our “Another Day in Paradise” a tribute to Michael Kerns, event was a great success. This year we are changing the theme to a New Orleans, Cajun theme “Voodoo Moon” under the moon and stars. It will take place at John Harvard’s Tamarack Pool Complex on Saturday, August 25th. Last year’s party was a sellout and got rave reviews from all who attended. This new event will continue to showcase the top restaurants in Ellicottville offering a specialty dish. This year the restaurants, hosted by John Harvard’s Brew House at Holiday Valley, will feature a New Orleans themed dish. Accomplishing our objectives will not be possible without the generous support of our sponsors. Also as a 501c3 organization your contribution is tax deductible. To this end we have also included our W9 for your tax return. We would appreciate your support with a donation for our Auction which is a feature of this event. You or your company will be recognized as the sponsor at the event, which last year attracted a sell out crowd of more than 200 people. Please call me at 716-699-6959 to answer any questions you may have and to discuss your participation in this most worthwhile project. Sincerely, Debbie Burkhard, Mary Lou Evans & Kim Szpaicher - Rotary Club of Ellicottville Foundation for Youth.

August 3. Include yours by the deadline with form and payment. No faxed application forms will be accepted. The entry fee must accompany the team application, and can be paid by check or credit card. The entry fee for four player teams is $124. The two groups anticipate having over 300 teams and 10,000 spectators from a 100-mile radius to attend the 3-day event and see this as a great opportunity to showcase Olean. The tournament will take place on Delaware Avenue and North Barry Streets in Olean, NY. The tournament, based on basketball played in driveways throughout the U.S., will include players who have no experience to those who have played college and semi-professional basketball. Primarily based on their age and level of

experience, players will be placed in divisions where they will be most evenly matched. Depending on the number of teams placed in a specific division, players and the teams they’re on will be playing for first- and second- and third trophies. Also teams that finish last in their divisions could receive “Toilet bowl” trophies. The Charter Members of the Gus Macker Olean are Park Centre Development, CUTCO/Ka-Bar Visitors Center, and the Kinley Corporation. Organizers also are looking for volunteers to keep score, serve as referees, assist with water and food distribution, and help set up and tear down. To volunteer or for more information, please contact David Carucci at (716) 372-9289 or Meme K. Yanetsko at 372-4433.

Rare is the gem that has everything you are looking for: large rooms, great location, a large yard, and the kind of old world charm that only a vintage house can provide. This house has all that and more. Located in the downtown of Ellicottville this century old home has been beautifully preserved and upgraded over the years. The

original wood floors are intact and still maintain their original luster. The kitchen was upgraded some years ago with new cabinets, counters and appliances. The front living room is adorned with large windows and a brick wood burning fireplace. In keeping with turn of the century home design, the ceilings throughout the main floor all are about nine feet high. The den, study and other rooms still maintain their original wood cabinetry. Also on the main floor is a bedroom,

a full and half bath. Upstairs are four large bedrooms and a full bath. On the double Village corner lot a large manicured lawn creates a park-like atmosphere. Around the back is a separate outdoor room with barbeque and room for a picnic table and outdoor furniture. A two car heated attached garage completes home. No diamond in the rough, this home is located in a quiet neighborhood of equally impressive homes. Furthermore, it’s only a few steps to downtown Ellicottville with fine dining and great shops. Add in the year round pleasures of golf, skiing, and the new Sky High Adventure Park at Holiday Valley, and you have a true gem. For more information contact David A. Blanchard GRI Assoc. Broker at Holiday Valley Realty at 716-474-7024

Kid’s Corner: Summer ArtSt. Bonaventure Quick Center Offers Courses to Kids this August

The Regina A. Quick Center for the Arts at St. Bonaventure University, in conjunction with The Ink Well in Allegany, is offering a four-day summer art camp for children ages 6 to 11. The camp, Hidden Treasures, will run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Thursday, Aug. 6 through 9 or Aug. 13 through 16. Mornings will be spent in and around the Quick Center on campus, with afternoon activities taking place at the Ink Well. Children will walk from campus to the Ink Well each day, stopping on the Allegheny River Valley Trail along the way to enjoy their own bagged lunch. On Thursday, the camp’s last day, they will be treated to a pizza party. Students will explore the hidden wonders of art each morning and create their own marvels at The Ink Well in the afternoon. “Art is everywhere, and each day, students will reveal these hidden wonders, finding

treasures in daily adventures on the university campus, surrounding areas, on nature walks, and on our daily picnics,” said Evelyn Sabina, curator of education at The Quick Center. “We’ll help them develop an appreciation and understanding of the world through art education.” Students will discover places normally unseen and learn more about the rich heritage of the Southern Tier, said Sabina. They will travel a secret stairway to discover a collection of rare and ancient books, learn about the unique architecture in Allegany and on St. Bonaventure’s campus, meet local artists, reveal the secret messages hidden in special artworks, and go behind the scenes at the Quick Center art galleries. Their afternoon art projects will include printmaking, impressionist sponge painting and foam board architecture. In addition, all students will leave the camp with a specially

created book of their own design. Ink Well owner Melissa Meyers said the only thing children need to bring with them is “their imaginations.” Students should come prepared for activities outside and dress for each day’s weather forecast. While they will not be taken outdoors in a thunderstorm, they may venture out in a light rain or in cool weather, said Sabina. Parents will drop off their children at The Quick Center in the morning and pick them up at The Ink Well in the afternoon. If weather conditions make a walk ill-advised, campers will remain at The Quick Center throughout the day. The cost for the Hidden Treasures summer camp is $119. Scholarships are available for qualifying residents. To register or for more information about the camp, visit The Ink Well at 51 E. Main St., Allegany, or call the shop at 373-0326.

Annual Triathlon to Benefit7th Annual Willow Creek Triathlon at Allegany State Park for Veterans

Participants are roughly divided into age groups for the start of the race, with our strongest competitors entering the water first. Swimmers will enter the water at 5-second intervals. As the morning mist rises off the water, partici-pants splash into Quaker Lake, swim around the lifeguard dock and back to the beach for a total of 300 yards.

The 7th Annual Willow Creek Triathlon, benefiting Disabled American Veterans, will be held on August 4th, 2012 at Allegany State Park. 2011 title sponsors of the event were Northwest Savings Bank, Zippo/Case, Dresser Piping Specialties. The purpose of the event is to raise money for the Disabled American Veterans Transportation Network. The money raised is used to purchase and maintain vans providing transportation of Vets to and from VA hospitals and clinics. The money donated to the Triathlon stays within the local area, being evenly divided between the McKean and Warren County DAV Chapters. This triathlon is run on one of the most scenic routes in the area. The event begins in Allegany State Park in New York at the Quaker Lake beach house. Quaker Lake is a manmade lake covering 268 acres. The lake is ~40 feet deep and has a 3.8 mile undeveloped shoreline. A blessing is offered for the race participants, event organizers, support teams and spectators. Participants are roughly divided into age groups for the start of the race, with our strongest competitors entering the water first. Swimmers will enter the water at 5-second intervals. As the morning mist rises off the water, participants splash into Quaker Lake, swim around the lifeguard dock and back to the beach for a total of 300 yards. Once out of the water, the racer crosses the timing pad and run through the beach house to their bikes, beginning the 15-mile race to the Corydon Hotel. The bike route loops around the north end of Quaker Lake and back to route 28-, through the Allegany State Park and then around the Allegheny Reservior. Totally surrounded by forest, the Allegheny Reservoir is the heart of one of the largest and most popular

outdoor recreation complexes in the northeastern United States. With mile markers along the way, participants will weave through the forest to Giordano’s New Corydon Hotel. Bikers dismount at the Hotel and put on their running shoes and head for the Willows Restaurant, 3 miles up the road. About one hour after the start, the first place winner crosses the finish line. Spectators, committee members, family and friends cheer the racers on until the last tri-athlete comes in. The Willows Restaurant venue provides more fun and entertainment with raffles, food, refreshments and a band. Place finishers are determined by the electronic timing devices provided by Runner’s High. Awards are given for the winners in the following categories: Top racer. Top 3 overall male and female individuals, top female team, top male team, youngest combined team, oldest combined team and the top in each age group. Age groups are <15 years, 16-19, 20-24, 25-29, and so on, at five-year intervals. The last age group includes tri-athletes 70 years and older. For the clydesdale team division, all members of the team must weigh over 200 pounds individually. Top, male and female individuals also receive a

special award, the Thom Maholic Memorial Award. Master Sergeant Thom Maholic was a Green Beret with Special Forces in Afghanistan. He lost his life in a battle with the Taliban in June 2006. Thom was a true tri-athlete, a true American and a true veteran. This award honors those who are true to themselves. Braveheart awards are given to those determined people who make an extra effort under extenuating circumstances to compete in and complete the triathlon. The Willow Creek Triathlon Committee has honored an 8-year-old boy and girl who completed the course with their father, a female cancer survivor and a young woman fighting a mental illness. Registration starts at 7:00 AM, with a rules meeting at 9:00 AM and the start at 9:30AM. Both individuals and teams of 2 or 3 may participate. Entry fees are $35 for an individual and $75 for a team if pre-registered by July 24th, 2012. After that date, registrations fees are $45 and $85, respectively. They didn’t deserve this. No one does. It’s happened in so many different towns across America that I’ve lost count. Now, the horror and helplessness that has visited so many American households has blasted it’s way into the seemingly innocuous city of Aurora Colorado. Much like the town of Columbine, just fifteen minutes down the road, Aurora will never be the same. By now we all know what happened in that darkened theater in Colorado. We’ve heard the survivors tell their stories and we’ve seen the monster who brought death to so many. We’ve got the facts. We know what happened and, unfortunately, we know what happened next. Nothing. This country, in the face of tragedy, especially tragedies involving guns, fills to the point of bursting with band-wagons, high-horses and soap boxes. In the end, it seems, “The Joker” isn’t the only coward here. Guns. There it is. The “purple elephant” in the room. The thing nobody wants to talk reasonably about. There is no middle ground here. “Guns don’t kill people. People kill people.” Bull.

People with guns kill people. Plain and simple. “The Joker,” didn’t walk into that theater and start throwing bullets. He pulled a trigger. Over and over and over again. People died. Young. Old. Rich. Poor. They all died and they all died of gunshot wounds. Spin it any way you want. That’s what happened. It will keep happening. The NRA wants you to believe that President Obama wants your guns. They’re, as usual, lying. As an Obama supporter, I’m here to tell you that the President, in my eyes and in the eyes of many of his Liberal supporters, has failed miserably when it comes to gun control. He has received an across the board grade of F from the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence headed by former Reagan Press Secretary James Brady and he has signed more gun friendly bills into law than his Republican predecessor. So lets get that out of the way right now. Obama talks the talk about gun control but he doesn’t, and wont, walk the walk. This isn’t a political issue. It has nothing to do with Obama despite what the NRA wants you to think. They politicize an issue in order to distract you until the next news cycle when, they know from the past, your mind will move on to other issues. As for the new idea that’s currently making the rounds on Conservative talk shows that this could have been prevented if someone else in the theater was armed? Armed with what? A bazooka? The air was filled with tear gas. It was dark. The attacker was wearing a gas mask and full body armor. He was carrying several guns including an AR-15 with a hundred round magazine. Someone in the crowd armed, presumably, with a handgun, would have simply

been a dead person in the crowd armed with a handgun. Or a person who had just shot wildly towards the sound of gunfire striking god knows what. The end. So where do I stand? I stand on the side of reason. The Second Amendment was written by a group of men who had never, and never would see anything more advanced than a single-shot musket. They wrote the words “well regulated militia” for a reason and they lived in a country where the vast majority of the people still relied on guns for survival. Those days are long gone. AR-15’s, armor piercing and hollow-point bullets, and AK’s are built for one reason and one reason only. They kill people. And yet, despite my Liberalism, I believe that Americans do have the right to own guns. But I also believe in a bit of common sense regulation. Everyone should be required to wait a certain amount of time before purchasing a gun. This waiting list just might give a person intent on violence a little more time to reconsider his actions. I also believe in extensive background checks. If, like the Aurora gunman, you are currently or have in the past been seeking psychiatric help you shouldn’t be allowed to own a gun. As for weapons and ammunition specifically designed to kill people? Do you honestly need to own an M-16? Really? What we’re left with is nothing more than an empty theater. Blood stained and echoing with the memories of the dead. Like so many other hellish scenes across the country, this one will soon be forgotten. Referenced only by politicians, hacks and commentators. We move on. Until someone else opens fire.

When I was introduced to the raw food diet for the first time I had mixed feelings and wasn’t sure what to expect. I of course have had and prepared some different raw dishes growing up like Mexican chopped salsa, guacamole, pico de gallo, veggie juicing, cauliflower ceviche and salads, but to have an entire meal with nothing cooked and no animal protein whatsoever was different. The first class I took changed the way I looked at foods, specially raw foods,it pretty much changed my life. The first time I took a raw food class was amazing to see that after having 5 courses in a couple of evening hours I felt so good and so light. I Slept great that night and the next morning felt more energized and vibrant. No, it wasn’t my imagination, it was real. Raw foods energize our body and spirit in a very special way. First of all the recipes one can prepare are delicious, that to me and my family is very important. When you make a meal that is 100% nutritious and delicious you have achieved a higher level of nourishing your body. The vibrant flavors and colors you are able to combine are fabulous. Raw foods have much more nutrients and fibers than cooked foods do. The enzymes are active and present, because there

is no heat applied. The life force of fresh vegetables, fruits, seeds and nuts is just invaluable. Briggitte Mars author of Rawsome! Says: Raw foods are digested easily and quickly, in 24-36hours as opposed to 48-100 hours for cooked food. Your body’s vitality won’t be sapped from breaking down hard-to-digest foods. A raw food diet strengthens the immune system, thereby preventing illness and helping you overcome nagging ailments. I love the fact that eating raw meals consistently may help to improve the health of those suffering with inflammatory unbalances like arthritis, asthma, high blood pressure, cancer, diabetes, menstrual problems, digestive ailments, allergies, obesity, psoriasis, skin conditions, heart disease, diverticulitis, weakened immunity, depression and hormonal balance. Brigitte points out that your eyes will become brighter and your voice more clear. Skin and muscle tone will improve. Memory and concentration may become sharper. You will feel better and have more energy. Raw food eating is great for weight loss as well, because you can melt away those extra pounds without being hungry or doing hard to adjust changes. You can maintain your weight optimally for as long as you wish while eating raw. One more thing I like is the fact that you don’t have to use the stove, no gas, no packaging, no pollution, you never have to clean the oven either! Raw foods are living foods, their nutrients and enzymes are intact, more so if they are organic. They may be dehydrated, frozen or fermented, but not heated to a temperature over 110 F. Steamed vegetables are usually cooked at 212F. Unfortunately, many vitamins lose potency at about 130 F. Vitamins A,D,E, and K are destroyed in cooking. Cooking disrupts the structure of indoles, which may have anticancer compounds found in vegetables like broccoli and cabbage. In his book Eating for Beauty, Dave Wolf and advocate of natural health and raw foods, says

“ Raw plant-food is beautiful. Preparing and eating this type of food is an art. Every ingredient is a new color. Each meal is a cloud, a stream, or a flower—a piece of the magnificent painting you are becoming. We can see the intense, vibrant, electromagnetic, and luminescent patterns found in raw foods.” To me Wolf states: “ the raw-food ideal represents not only a way to live in peace, love, and harmony with nature and the animals, it also represents the highest aspirations of beauty in the human spirit.” I agree with Dave. I personally love making these meals and teaching others. My advise to you would be to start adding one meal at a time. Don’t try change your meals over night. Take classes and learn to prepare these simple, delicious amazing meals and start feeling the incredible benefits. For more information on Raw Food Energy Classes please contact Nature’s Remedy in Ellicottville, NY 716-699-4372 . While you are experimenting with this new concept, it is wise to always supplement your diet with Food Enzymes or Proactazyme to help your body to breakdown old cooked food residues and relieve general stagnation, this will allow your body to be prepared to assimilate raw foods better. I also like Nature’s Harvest, it provides nutrient-dense plants, fruits and herbs for health and energy. Provides 75% of the Daily Value for 18 essential vitamins and minerals. Contains green foods, antioxidants, essential fatty acids, nutritive herbs, fiber and more. Provides 13 g vegetable protein per serving. Owners and employees of an Olean-area restaurant have been given hope their business will succeed, while area diners have a transformed place to eat. Chef Robert Irvine, recently took his design team and talent, which have changed restaurants across the country,

to the Oleander. Irvine hosts the Food Network’s “Restaurant Impossible,” a show that airs at 10 p.m. Wednesdays to show how he can change restaurants that are nominated for transformation. After choosing them, he visits the establishments to do a business assessment by observing staff to determine weak spots, updating menus, retraining employees, making cosmetic changes and telling others about the reopening … all within two days and a

budget of $10,000. Not only does the show’s staff work to change the restaurant, but also the lives of its owners and employees in its bid to make the establishment a successful one.Oleander staff referred comment to Food Network officials about the visit, and Food Network officials could not be reached to comment. Irvine has been on various television shows and served as a chef for celebrities, royalty and more before bringing talents to Olean recently.

Development, Enchanted Mountains of Cattaraugus County. Featured at this year’s Onofest will be multiple bands, food vendors, and fireworks to end the night.Amy Bragg, administrative assistant to Jeff Davis, Recreational Area Manager for the Marina, said that this is a very family friendly event that has become increasingly popular in the last few years it has been done. “All you have to do is bring a chair and bring a blanket,” she said. “There’s plenty of open space for people to enjoy the fest.” The price for the event is simply $5 per car load/vehicle, meaning there is a $5 flat rate for as many people as can fit into a car. The bands featured at this year’s fest are Kuk and

Freddie, The Band Archives, Mojo Hand Blues Band, and this year’s new edition, Porcelain Busdrivers. Also featured will be craft vendors selling tye-dye shirts and jewelry and the Frewsburg Fire Department, who will have a kid-oriented game. Some exhibits, including ones from Lime Lake Marine, who will bring down a couple of boats and campers to have on display and for sale, include Zahm & Mattson’s and John Deere of Falconer, who will have a display and also riding mowers and garden tractors. Food will also be available from Bayview and the Horseshoe Inn Restaurant. Bragg said that Onofest is getting to be more and more recognized every year, as close to 1,000 people came last year. She also said that this year’s addition of the new band, Porcelain Busdrivers, will also help bring in an ever larger turnout. “People who’ve attended in the past years have

asked us about getting that particular band booked, and this year we were able to pull it off,” she said. “We’re excited to see how many of their followers we bring in.” Bragg also said that the event is sure to have a promising turnout, as both the camping and temporary dock on the marina sold out back in February, before an official date was even set for this year’s event. Bragg also said that this is event is completely family friendly, as there are no alcohol sales and none allowed on the premises. So if you’re looking for a fun way to conclude the end of summer with your friends and/or family, check out the 5th annual Onofest, which is sure to have something for everyone. “All we can hope for now is nice weather,” she said. For more information on the Onofest and the marina, check out their Facebook page under “Onoville Marina Park,” or call them at 716-354-2615.
