The 29th annual Celebrate Westlake 5 Mile Run and 5K enjoyed perfect sum-mer weather the morning of Aug. 31 on the campus of University Hospitals St. John Medical Center. More than 600 runners, walkers and children took part in a variety of fitness events, including a 5 Mile Run, 5K Run and Walk, and Kid’s Runs. Presented by Q-Lab Corporation and sponsored by a number of local business, this annual Labor Day weekend tradition again generated funds for a number of com-munity causes and charities. Recipients include Westlake Porter Library, Westlake Community Services, DARE and more. In the 29 years the race has been held, founder and race director Bud Hagy has seen this event raise more than $1.4 million for com-munity purposes. Runners received great looking zip-tech pullovers and a ticket to the post-race beer tent. Kids enjoyed a bounce house and face painting and a medal for event participant. When the touring show Beatles vs. Stones – A Musical Showdown comes to the Stocker Arts Center/Hoke Theatre on Tuesday, September 17, the Avon High School String Quartet will join the professional musicians on stage to lend some local talent to this homage to the British Invasion. The string quartet consisting of Avon High School seniors Olivia Eldridge and Sarah Talmage along with juniors Sam Golik and Mi-chael Wilson will join the bands for the songs “Eleanor Rigby,” “Yesterday,” “A Day in the Life,” “Hello Goodbye,” “Hey Jude,” “As Tears Go By,” and “Ruby Tuesday.” Quartet members belong to prestigious area ensembles, including the Ohio Music Educa-tor Association Regional and All-State Orchestras. The show pits Rolling Stones tribute band Satisfaction against rival Brit boys Abbey Road in an all-out musical showdown for rock domi-nance. The string quartet will perform seven songs with the bands.

Indian Princesses and Guides Fall RegistrationRegister Now for the Best Father & Son/Daughter Experience Around

The West Shore Indian Princesses and Indian Guides are dedicated to fostering rela-tionships between fathers & sons and fathers & daughters in a friendly, fun environment. Activities require participation by both father and child, giving you opportunities to share experiences, learn, and grow together. This is not a program to drop your child off; dads participate in all activities. Dads can register with their sons & daughters as young as Kindergarten. The orga-nization serves Avon, Avon Lake, Bay Village, Fairview Park, North Olmsted, North Rid-geville, Olmsted Falls, Rocky River and Westlake. Tribes are organized with other dads from the same area and whose kids are the same age range. The West Shore “Nation”, which is the group of all the individual Tribes, has one or two events planned every month during the school year. Events include Fall, Winter, and Spring camp-outs, bowling, skating, pine-wood derby, holiday party, tobogganing, and many others. The camp-outs are mostly held at YMCA camps with cabins and the activities offered include horseback riding, archery, crafts, rock walls, canoeing, hiking, ziplining, BB guns, a big Saturday night bonfire and more. The first event of the year is a Picnic, Cornhole and Movie Night in the Park on Sat-urday, Sept. 21 from 5-10 p.m. at Bretton Ridge Park in North Olmsted, behind Becker’s Donuts off Lorain Rd. This event is free and open to the whole family. Non-members are invited to join to learn more. To register visit www.noonway.com and follow the instructions. Avon Tops Avon Lake to Claim Silver Rail Trophy The classic Avon-Avon Lake football rivalry kicked off the 2019 season in memo-rable fashion Friday, August 30 as the host Eagles topped the Shoremen, 13-12, in front of a packed house at Avon’s Firment Stadium. The win earned the Silver Rail trophy for the Eagles, awarded each year by the Lion’s Club to the victor of this border wars clash.

The outcome avenged a loss in the season-opener for the Ea-gles last year in a game that set the stage for these two teams to eventually share the Southwest-ern Conference championship. Avon Lake later lost to Olmsted Falls for the only blemish on their SWC slate. Slick senior running back Nick Perusek used his speed and maneuverability to pace the Eagle offense. Bolstered by great trench work from the Eagle offensive line, Perusek broke a 23 yard screen midway through the first quarter to lift the Eagles to a 7-0 lead. Avon threatened again in the second quarter, but an end Avon Coach Mike Elder receives the Silver Rail trophy from Bob Hill of the Avon Lions Club.

zone interception set up a long drive and 4-yard TD by Gage Deusey for Avon Lake. A missed PAT made it 7-6. Avon’s defense then rose to the occasion sever-al times in the second half, stopping AL drives and limited threats to a pair of Harry Hebert field goals. Avon finally found the end zone again in the fourth quarter on a 16-yard TD from Perusek, who ran into the welcoming arms of the huge Avon stu-dent section for a spirited celebration. Avon visits 0-1 Lorain this week while Avon Lake travels to Dayton-area Clinton-Massie (1-0) this weekend.
