A Clyde Bank Road resident submitted the following letter in appreciation of the work of our COP. Attention: Editor and COP,

Many thanks to all of you for your time and dedication, and a special thank you to the young lady who was patrolling on the evening of Halloween Eve. I was walking my dog on Glen Keith in front of the old elementary school when two males with black ski masks on – not Halloween cos-tumes – were loitering in the area, walking towards me and crisscrossing my path in a taunting manner. At this exact moment, Ms. “COP” pulled right up behind me, dis-tracted the two and immediately called the police. She stayed in the area with me and even offered us a ride home.

I have been thinking about this kind lady and wanted her to know how grateful I am for her vigilance and intervention.

Thank you, Santa!

On behalf of the residents of Loch Raven Village, I’d like to send a special thank you to Santa, who visited our community on Saturday, December 17. Santa was greeted by large groups of well-wishers, pets, chil-dren and adults as he rode through the Vil-lage escorted by police and accompanied by three fire trucks! ALRV MEETINGS

Meetings are held on the second Tuesday of each month

7:00pm, Room 102 Loch Raven Center

1801 Glen Keith Boulevard.

Residents are encouraged to attend, and to help in our ongoing work “to protect, maintain, and enhance the property values of Loch Raven Village homes, and the quality of life of Loch Raven Village residents.”

your story. •If you have not paid your dues, please con-sider doing so. The money helps support our community activities (i.e. the Easter Egg Hunt) and enhancement projects (i.e. the street banners), among other things.•Attend a monthly board meeting, which is always open to the public and held on the second Tuesday of the month at 7 p.m. at Loch Raven Center. •If you see something, say something! We can all be “Citizens on Patrol” (COP) by keeping an eye out for our neighbors and reporting suspicious activity to the police.•Help a neighbor if you know he or she is in need. Whether it is shoveling snow or run-ning an errand, think of your sacrifice of time and energy as an exercise in “paying it forward.” You never know if you will be that person in need. Here’s hoping 2012 is a good year for all of you. Cheers! Gretchen Sarkin

Letters to the Editor

In an effort to keep our community safe and attractive to our fellow neighbors and visitors, I would like to suggest that we all take the time to cut our grass, trim shrubs and clean up any debris that is around our property. This will eliminate the risk of rodents living in the neighborhood as well. As a resident for over 20 years, I’m starting to see a serious decline in property upkeep and feel it’s important to address the issue.

If you are in need of assistance with clean-ing up your property, please reach out to your neighbors. We all want to be proud of where we live and are willing to help.

Thank you.

LRV Resident

Dear LVR Crier Readers,

I wanted to take the time to give a “Shout Out” to Mr. Bill Snyder, a Putty Hill Avenue resident who for many years has been the “lone gardener” for the Putty Hill Island (at least my nine years). Mr. Snyder has worked endlessly to keep the Island look-ing so beautiful. He is always out there pulling weeds, planting, pruning, watering and even picking up trash. It is he who takes such pride to keep our street looking perfect all the time.

Thank you, and my hat off to you, Mr. Snyder for giving your time and “green thumb” to LRV. I know how much I appreci-ate it and I am sure many others share my feelings.

A New Alley

Nearly three years ago, residents whose back doors face the two alleys parallel to Doxbury and Pleasants Plains Roads agreed to pay for new alleys through tax contribu-tions. The work began at the end of October and went quickly. Now, residents can return to the luxury of parking out back to bring things in from and out to the car. Some-times, it’s the little things in life that make us happy!

Has Cancer Affected Your Life?

On April 28, Loch Raven High School will host its fourth annual Relay for Life, ben-efitting the American Cancer Society. This fundraising event is an opportunity to cel-ebrate the lives of people who have battled cancer, remember loved ones lost, and fight back against the disease.

The LRHS Relay is typically held for three to four hours in the school gym, which is trans-formed into a walking path and decorated with posters and memorabilia in honor of loved ones who have been affected by can-cer. Team members take turns walking the entire time. Friends, family and community members are invited to participate in Relay by forming a team, sponsoring a participant or simply coming to the event to show sup-port.

Last year, LRHS had 600 participants and raised over $53,000. The goal for 2012 is to raise $57,000. To date, 146 people are registered to participate. If you’d like to join a team, visit www.relayfor-life.org/lochraven and click on "sign up." If you can't be on a team, you can sup-port one by clicking the "donate" button and following the directions. Questions? Contact Erin Confair at [email protected].

From February 27 - March 1, the school gym will be transformed into a representation of a human heart in a program called the Heart Adventure Course. This program aims to make learning anatomy a fun and exciting experi-

ence. Guided by physical education teacher, Steve Ey, students will travel through the four chambers of the heart as oxygenated and de-oxygenated blood cells.

Gino’s Feedback

To the LRV Crier editor,When the Gino's opened I had visions of the taste, appearance, and the memory of the Ameche Powerhouse. I was excited when I found out that my old favorite was making a comeback to be on the menu along with the Gino Giant which I remembered eating as a freshman in high school. I waited until two days after our "earthquake" to stand in the line. When I got to the door I was dis-appointed because they did not have an official "carry out" window. Those custom-ers wishing to get "carry out" had to wait in the same line as the "eat in" customers. I decided to get out of the line and return two days later when I could wait for more than 20 minutes in line to get in. I waited until 2 days later to try again and this time I waited in the line getting in at 4:40 p.m. When I got into Gino's the "carry out" cus-tomers sat on a room-long bench facing the ordering and cooking area. That day there were flies to swipe from my face and arms

while I waited 12 minutes for my order to come. I was rewarded with my order: one Gino Giant for my mother and an Ameche Powerhouse for myself. I was able to choose my toppings which were the Ameche Spe-cial sauce, lettuce and tomato. There was the sesame seeded bun with 3 hamburg-ers stacked on top of one another with no bread/roll in between the burgers at all. The hamburgers did not have any taste at all. My mother said the same thing about her Giant which I brought home. Needless to say I was very disappointed that the memory of the Ameche Powerhouse did not match the reality of the 2011 version of the Ameche Powerhouse. After this experience we decided that Gino's was not the "Place to go" anymore for the hamburgers we re-membered so fondly.

Belated birthday wishes to Evan O’Donnell, who turned one on January 6.

A hearty congratulations and welcome to Rivera Figueroa, who purchased and moved into a home on Putty Hill Avenue. No strang-er to the Village or Putty Hill Avenue, Rivera was raised here with his parents, long-time residents Dionisio and Brenda Figueroa.

Found on November 2 on Loch Shiel Road: a green, two-gallon watering can with a white sprinkler. Owner may claim it from the porch of 1834 Loch Shiel.

Welcome new Putty Hill Avenue neighbors, Matt and Jennifer Mueller.

Congratulations to Sean Smith of Glen Keith Blvd who graduated from Towson Universi-ty in December and will begin an internship at Walt Disney World in Orlando, FL at the end of January.

Congratulations to Jacki Smith of Glen Keith Blvd. who graduated from CCBC in Decem-ber.

A fond farewell to the Soukups of Glen Keith Blvd. They are moving to Phoenix, Maryland to be closer to their daughter (Heather), son-in-law (Brett) and their twin grandchil-

dren, who were born in September. They will be missed by their neighbors and the Village, as Curt Soukup helped with the upkeep of the Loch Raven Elementary play-ground and grounds. Best of luck in their new surroundings.

Congratulations to Maddie Killian, Chloe Baker, Dylan Vallade, Christian Jadra, Tony Antkowiak-Tassone, Kira Fallen, George Kaspar, Sam Korzi, Mary Lige, Brennen Meagher, Liam Mischke, Abby Morris, Emily Wieczorek and Noah Zipin – all fourth and fifth grade students at Cromwell Valley El-ementary -- for their performances of Willy Wonka Kids on January 11 and 12.

Stranger Danger by Lexie Hagen

Who is a stranger? A stranger can be anyone! By anyone I mean male or female. A strang-er can even look nice, but if you don’t know someone, just stay away!

I’m not trying to say that you shouldn’t talk to anyone you don’t know. How would you make friends that way? I’m just saying if someone in a car pulls up to you on the street and asks you to get in and lead him or her to the near-est post office, DON’T! If you don’t know that person, don’t get in!

Strangers usually go after small or young chil-dren. They often try to bribe them to come with them. There have been stories where a stranger told a young child to come with him to help find a lost pet, or something that a child would want to help with. A stranger also could bribe a child to come somewhere by of-fering a treat like a cupcake or lollipop.

Small children are not the only ones at risk. Strangers use different tricks to go after older children as well. Be safe no matter what your age! Don’t get yourself caught up in STRANG-ER DANGER!

Less Soda. More Water.

There is a lot of talk these days about eating healthy. Even first lady Michelle Obama is get-ting in on the action by placing a special em-phasis on providing healthy food at schools,

among other things. There is concern about the health and financial effects of obesity, and plenty of advice about eating right. Some of the advice is good ... a lot is not so good. It is hard to know how to make healthy choices! This column offers simple advice on how to eat well, save money, and help your family to be active, stay healthy and feel good!

Did you know that soda has about nine spoon-fuls of sugar in each can? Can you imagine eat-ing that much sugar? Gross! Low-fat or non-fat milk is a better choice, offering protein and calcium to help you grow strong, and it’s per-fect for washing down a peanut-butter sand-wich! Other healthy drink options are water, which everybody needs and is calorie-free, and 100 percent fruit juice, which contains vitamins.

Milk and 100 percent fruit juice both contain sugar, but it is a different type of sugar than that found in soda and sports drinks. All sugar has calories, so try mixing half a glass of 100 percent fruit juice with half a glass of water. This way, you’ll reduce the calories and still get the healthy stuff!

Remember, the next time you’re thirsty, grab water instead of soda. If you want something more than that, try milk or just half a glass of 100% fruit juice.

Loch Raven Village Citizens on Patrol (COP)

We are fortunate to have a small corps of volunteers who donate their time each month to patrol the streets and alleys of the Village. During 2011, eight residents undertook this responsibility. They were Barbara Bailey, Don Bindock, Paul Esposi-to, Robert Fisher, John Kelly (COP chair), Lucie Portier, Mike Smith and Barbara Stewart. If you know one of these dedicated volun-teers, please take a moment to thank him or her for taking the time to keep our com-munity safe. The presence of vehicles with the flashing orange light and the magnetic Loch Raven Village Citizens on Patrol signs affixed to the side of their cars lets people know that someone is watching and acts as a deterrent! (Be sure to read in this issue of the Crier how a COP volunteer prevented a resident from becoming a victim of crime!)The COP “Army of Eight” welcomes the participation of additional residents. E-mail Citizens on Patrol chair, John Kelly, at [email protected] for information. This straightforward operation involves monthly sign up by e-mail, picking up the flashing light and magnetic signs at the storage box and patrolling the community streets and alleys for up to an hour at a time.

Will There Be Snow This Winter? Meteorologists seem to have trouble fore-casting the weather for the next several days, much less the coming months, yet pre-dictions abound!
