Gouzlan Group jewellers in Mt Eliza is enjoying stellar growth in repairs and remodelling. Customers now tend to seek our advice regarding their old jewellery. Items that have been forgotten or abandoned for not being pretty any more, inherited with an attached sentimental value, but clunky unfashionable without artistic value or just an unwanted memory from an ‘ex’. Gouzlan’s modern solution to this dilemma is to carefully sketch and offer a unique new design, whether for a remodelling or a makeover. So come on, don’t let these pieces just sit in drawers gathering dust, bring them to Gouzlan and you will be amazed with the quality of the work, the price, and service you can trust.

What you give is what you get!Kevin and Jackie Lyall are all about putting in the effort. Proud owners of their bustling butchery Eliza Meats, this husband and wife team thrive on giving back to the community which has supported their business for over twenty-two years. ‘Donating our meats to Lions and local sporting clubs has been a great thing’, says Kevin. His gluten free snags turn up at Bunnings sausage sizzles, Ranelagh Scout Group gatherings, Mt Eliza Football, Bowling and Cricket Clubs events. ‘If we can help by supplying our meats at cost why not? What goes around, comes around’.‘I love all things to do with being a butcher’, he continues. ‘I’ve been getting up at a quarter to three every morning since I was fourteen. Butchering is in my blood. Now I get a thrill out of watching the young blokes being trained and keeping the skill alive’. One of Kevin’s apprentices, Jonathon Marinathus, is up for apprentice of the year in 2012. There are eight “blokes” (including Kevin’s son) who are part of this family operated business, plus Jackie who works behind the scenes. ‘I couldn’t do it without her’, says Kevin, or without the ongoing support of locals who he knows by name. Customers drop in with jars of home cooked beetroot and other goodies for the boys.Eliza Meats manufacture all their produce on the premises, including chemical and additive free ham.And watch out for their NUDE 2013 CALENDAR to be released in December, with all proceeds go to National Depressive Initiative Beyond Blue. Yes, this is entirely an Eliza Meats production and the inside story is that many of the staff have been scrambling to the gym to get ready for the photo shoot – plenty of beef-cake to go around!Kevin and Jackie Lyall, Eliza Meats, 112B Mt Eliza Way, Mt Eliza.Open: 7.00am till 5.30pm weekly. 7.00am till 12.30pm Saturday Ph: 9787 4473

Lotus Chiropractic are movingAfter 9 years at the current location on Mt Eliza Way, the facade of the new Lotus building is nearing completion. Practice owner, Kimberlie Furness delayed the start of the project following the surprise pregnancy and subsequent birth of daughter Evie. (“My other sons were 9 and 11 years old when I found out I was pregnant. Having a gorgeous little baby girl changed my focus at the time and all our plans went on hold”.)

When they first dreamed of a new building, Kimberlie wanted to include a tower like all her favourite castles in Scotland. Her husband Michael and local architect Bruce Dawe designed a more contemporary version, with circular fibbed towers clad with plantation spotted gum. They were fortunate enough to have a family member visiting from Scotland who was a stonemason, so they had him build the impressive entrance to Lotus from Castlemaine stone with a Gosforth stone panel. Indeed the whole building has been a family affair as Kimberlie’s husband, brother, father and practice members all work for local builder, PMP Contracting. The rusty metal elements combined with stone and timber ensure the building blends harmoniously with the surrounding row of paperbark trees and the magnificent silver leaf stringybark that dominates the entrance to the property on Ranelagh Drive. The building certainly improves the village streetscape after the old kindergarten was falling into disrepair. The original design was single storey but has evolved into a double storey façade allowing space for other natural health professionals to join the Lotus team. The building has the potential for geothermal power, though some copper erosion has caused hiccups in the process. Kim and Mike are hopeful this can be rectified so this more sustainable form of heating and cooling can be used. Practice member, Stu Tyler of Phytogreen will be installing an area of planted roof, which provides a natural habitat for native fauna and flora as well as improving the aesthetics from the first floor. The upper roof is perfectly orientated to house a large solar array to offset the carbon footprint of the building.Lotus will be opening its doors in early November.

By Trish StampI started in the travel industry in 1972 at an agency in Frankston. Initially, my jobs were making coffee, stamping brochures and learning how to book a bus trip on the phone, from Melbourne to Sydney. Then a came a big break through; I could pick up the phone and book a flight with Ansett or TAA, and manually write the tickets. The progression continued and I learnt to book cruises, which were really only around the Pacific or all the way to the UK and Italy. Boy how things have changed with the variety of cruises available now. Back then there were flights, first and economy class and basically one fare for each. Now there is first, business, premium economy and economy class - and the fares are many and varied. I remember when Jumbo jets came to Australia in the mid 70’s and we had a huge promotion in the

Australia Day parade in Frankston with a real elephant!I have been so lucky during my 40 years with trips all over the world. One highlight was being in a bar, in Tel Aviv, next to Moshe Dayan the well-known military leader from Israel. I tried to talk to him and was pounced upon by his minders; he just smiled. When visiting the Palace of the Lost City in Sun City South Africa, I was amazed by the architecture and sculptures. Russia was another wonderful place; to actually see the real Faberge eggs in the Kremlin museums. My nose was glued to the cabinet for ages. Auschwitz, well a very sad story and lots of tissues used that day. Other favourites were going to game parks in Kenya and seeing the animals in their natural state; ballooning over the Masai Mara allowed an unobstructed panorama of the countryside, and we actually saw

vultures ripping a hippo to pieces (kind of pay back as hippos apparently kill more people than any other wild animal). And I will never forget the lights and ‘wow’ factor of Las Vegas. Disneyland is a kid’s dream come true, and adults can appreciate the thought and work that has gone into it.Then there is the Rocky Mountaineer train gold leaf class, the scenery beautiful. Cruising, whether it is the Pacific, Mediterranean or to Alaska, is fascinating and fun - also fattening! Please call in to chat about your next holiday and how I can make travel easier than ever. I love my job and as long as I continue to do so I will be here.Trish StampTravelscene Mt Eliza70 Mt Eliza WayPh 9787 5437

Designs and technology that thrill and inspireThe team at Travis Honda breaks the stereotype of the typical car dealership. To begin with, this family owned business has been operating for 23 years, the owners live locally, and Travis Honda is committed to working with the community it serves on the Mornington Peninsula and surrounds. Then there are the awards for sales and service; in fact Travis Honda is the most awarded Honda dealer, ever! Not surprising considering innovative ideas like valet service, where your car is picked up from your home or office and returned after servicing with no extra charge.General Sales Manager, Rob McKenzie says, “The only thing about our dealership that is ‘old fashioned’ is our customer service, where integrity and a handshake form the foundation of trust. We have second and third generations of the same family who are return clients because of that trust; because we keep our promises.”Travis Honda includes a 6 year 150,000klm warranty at no charge with new car sales and the Service Department boasts being awarded the “Honda Service Dealer of the Year Award”, a record seven times for excellence in Honda Service. If you’re in the market for a used car, choose from a wide range of pre-owned and ex-demonstrator models which are carefully selected for quality and excellent condition. In a majority of cases the vehicles were sold new by Travis Honda originally, and have a genuine Honda service history, with many still holding the balance of new car warranty.Finance and vehicle insurance can also be arranged on site.Come in for a chat or to see our great rangeTravis Honda 9-12 Wells Road, Frankston (Seaford)Phone: 9786 1022 Email us: [email protected]

A Word from Councillor Leigh EustaceThings have been fairly busy at Council as we prepare to enter Caretaker Period on 25th September prior to the forthcoming Council elections at the end of October 2012. The Mount Eliza Ward will change boundaries at the next election with Mount Eliza being joined with Mornington and Mount Martha to create a new single larger ward called “Briars” with three elected Councillors serving the Ward. I intend re-nominating as your Councillor and look forward to your continued support.Several local projects are either underway or have been completed of late. The new footpath from Williams Road to the village on Old Mornington Road has been completed and has received widespread approval. The remaining section to Nepean Highway will be constructed in this budget year. The completion of the new footpath on Humphries Road has been delayed but is also receiving positive feedback by creating safer access in the area. The first stage of the works at the Howard Parker Reserve are progressing well and will provide a walking track around the oval and the inclusion of exercise stations as part of a Rotary Club of Mount Eliza initiative in conjunction with the Shire, a new playground and a sealed car park. Funding has been provided for the final stage which will follow the current works with planning having already commenced in accordance with the adopted Master Plan.Major drainage works are also underway in Mount Eliza which should address some of the drainage issues residents have faced in recent years. Finally, congratulations to the players, Committees and volunteers of Mount Eliza Junior and Senior Football clubs, and Netball teams for their stellar season achievements. Well Done.Regards, Councillor Leigh Eustace.

Spring Cleaning! Do the words make you shudder and turn you into a trembling mess? Well, the team at MyHome Mt Eliza have got the remedy - they’ll do it for you!

‘We really enjoy cleaning and making a difference in people’s busy lives’, says Marlon without a skerrick of a smirk. ‘We work hard at getting the job done properly and enjoy the appreciation we get from our clients by make their lives easier.’Let’s face it, cleaning can be hard. Each person has a different idea and level of expectation, however, one thing the team at MyHome Mt Eliza know for sure is that after you’ve worked a full week the last thing you want to do is start all over again at home. Their Tri Colour System has got all bases sorted. ‘We break the house up into three different areas RED, BLUE and GREEN’, says Marlon. ‘We use red cloths in wet areas such as bathrooms and toilets, blue cloths in the bedrooms and living areas and green cloths in the kitchen and laundry. We promise a critical point system from celling to floor and work in a circular motion. This covers all the important items in the room, while the colour coding reduces the risk of cross contamination. Gardening 4 Kids is a unique Melbourne-based business that sells a wide range of quality fun and educational gardening products for children. Not only does the business feature an online store it has a blog that covers a wide range of tips, recipes, activities and facts to inspire those who enjoy being outside and active with little green thumbs. Owner, Caroline Roberts, is an environmental educator and gardening specialist, who has a passion for educating children about a healthy lifestyle and a sustainable future. She offers the following advice for those who are looking at involving their children in gardening: “Gardening is not only fun and engaging but it teaches children skills that will stay with them throughout their lives. It actively connects children with nature and helps develops their understanding and empathy for our environment. It also encourages eco-friendly practises such as composting, recycling and organic food principles.”Here are Caroline’s five tips for getting the kids outside and active in the garden:Give your child their own area in the garden that they are responsible for. It may be a bare patch of dirt, a planter box or even a garden pot that they can use to grow their own plants. Choose plants that are colourful, large and quick to produce results. Good examples are radishes, carrots, pumpkins, sunflowers and peas. Kids are also fascinated with edible flowers. Try growing marigolds, fuchsias, nasturtiums and lavender. Provide your child their own gardening equipment to help them feel a sense of ownership and pride as well as responsibility for their equipment. Safely does it for kids!Too many times we’ve heard stories of children having accidents in the home that could have been prevented. Too many times lives have been irreversibly altered because of split second mishaps leading to long term trauma. Safe Spaces for Kids wants to change this for good. Owner/DirectorAdrianaHartskeerlbelievesthisispossible.‘Afterworking on a State led Injury Prevention and Child Safety project, Safe Spaces for Kids came to fruition. It was four years in the planning, so by the time we launched in October 2011, I knew what I wanted to achieve. Offering the right kind of education and advice makes home safety a reality.’Home Safety Checks are a vital component. A Safe Spaces for Kids representative will come to your home and conduct a thorough safety check. You will receive a comprehensive report with recommendations on how to improve your safety. If you feel a little bit lost, the fully trained staff can help you make decisions. It’s all about finding the optimum solution to achieve peace of mind.‘Our team looks at a range of issues when conducting a safety check’, says Adriana. ‘Hazards that can potentially result in poisoning, choking and suffocation, burns and drowning are just a few of the areas we cover’, she adds. Drive-way safety is another important area - too many toddlers have suffered as a result of poor driveway management. A devastating average of one child per week is killed in the driveway of their own home. Adriana has small children herself, so she knows what’s at stake.Other services this burgeoning company offers are car restraint checks and fittings and a wide selection of safety products including door stops, security gates, fire blankets, cupboard locks and blind cord devices. With strong links to Little Aid, their preferred paediatric first aid provider, parents, grandparents and carers of children aged 0 – 8 years have the opportunity to learn lifesaving skills in their own home or at one of the many community events being organised by Safe Spaces for Kids. With child safety experts and paediatric first aid trainers who service the Peninsula to Bendigo, Safe Spaces for Kids gives you the means to sit back and enjoy watching your children grow and play – safely.Call Adrianna Hartskeerl on 0412 210 608 or visit www.safespaces.com.au, email [email protected]

As an experienced yoga teacher, Elisa Payne draws upon the physicality and philosophy of yoga to assist students in discovering their innate potential and a connection to the self and the world around them. Elisa was first drawn to yoga in preparing to walk the Kokoda track. She was able to use the strength of mind and body inspired by yoga to complete the trek despite a serious spinal injury. Having discovered a passion and respect for yoga, she obtained her Advanced Diploma of Yoga Teaching with the Australian Yoga Academy, and went on to complete her Yoga Masters followed by further training on the physiological applications of yoga with physiotherapist Simon Borg Olivier. Elisa has continued her training with a Diploma in Remedial Massage and has studied with a variety of yoga Masters internationally.Elisa says, “There are a lot of misconceptions about

yoga, mostly about how it is a religious practise and while a few religions have stemmed from yoga, it is in itself simply a ‘school of thought’, with a strong history and philosophy around the poses each of which is designed to have a beneficial effect on the body and the mind.” “There is also the perception that yoga is just stretching purely to increase flexibility. A good balanced yoga class has the ability to increase flexibility and also gain incredible strength and balance while optimising the body’s ability to relax. It is a practise where you can even out your body – use each joint and muscle in its whole ability rather than in the same repetitive ones like we do when we cycle or run. More and more elite athletes are turning to yoga as part of, if not their primary, physical training .” “It was this physiology that first attracted me to yoga but soon the more subtle philosophies of yoga creep in and you find yourself wanting to transform, to live the best life you can. It was this positive change in my life that found me wanting to share yoga with my friends and family and that just grew to the larger community. I want to make yoga accessible, dispel the myths and make it user friendly so everyone can enjoy the benefits.” Elisa is the director of the Om Buddi Yoga studio in Mt Eliza as well as a Yoga Coach with the Australian Sports Commission. Elisa is also the Mornington Peninsula Community Ambassador for Yoga Aid. For more information, please visit www.omboddhiyoga.com

?How many lollies in the Jar?The Mt Eliza Farmers Market on the 22nd July saw the whole team from Dental Care get into the Community Spirit and enjoy the winter sunshine and bounty of organic local produce. The balloons were a huge hit with the youngsters and our annual “Politically incorrect” guessing game of “How many teeth in the jar” competition was held.Dental Care Mt Eliza is ably supported by our experienced Preventive Dental Health Care ProvidersDr Scott Robertson, Dr Suzanne Cairns and Dr Emma Barnsley We are delighted to give away an electric tooth brush for the correct guess of 247. Congratulations to Emma Bucknell The Farmers Market celebration of the “Natural Food Message” is a key component of a Healthy Lifestyle. The “You are what you Eat” promotion is very true for Dentistry. The frequency of carbohydrate snacking is implicated in dental decay and the inflammatory affects of too much sugars in the diet is starting to be more widely understood as a general health no no!One has to ask “How sick does your body have to be if the hardest substance in the human body, our teeth, starts to rot?”Healthy gums and a low decay diet are a cornerstone to our approach to achieve healthy PATIENTS.HEALTH DENTISTRYbite . breathing . balance . beauty

Injury Advice from Physiotherapy Commentator Michelle Blake from The Sports Injury ClinicHIP IMPINGEMENTWhat is Hip Impingement? The hip is a ball and socket joint and provides a platform for all of our lower limb movements. The Hip joint contains cartilage (acetabula labrum) and also has ligaments to stabilize the hip. The hip can have some ‘design’ differences that are unique to each individual which result in the ball (femoral head) not moving fully or fluently in the socket (acetabulum). As a result of different hip shapes, the hip can ‘pinch’ surrounding tissue, bone or its labrum resulting in Hip Impingement or Femoro-acetabula Impingement (FAI). This can occur in from teenage years onwards. How long will it last? Hip impingement can ‘niggle’ along for years often as groin or front of hip pain . If undiagnosed it can eventually lead to degeneration in the hip. . Hip impingement can settle over 6 – 12 weeks with a specifically targeted management program. Diagnosis is essential for a good long term outcome.Symptoms

The symptoms of Hip Impingement can include: Groin pain sometimes referring into the thigh. Pain on weight bearing, putting on shoes & socks, crossing legs. Pain with running, twisting/pivoting on the hip. Weakness or decreased balance on that leg. Increasing ‘tightness’ at the front of the hip. Clicking in the hip that is painfulSuggestions for managing Hip Impingement Hip/Glutealstabilityexercisestostrengthenthehipandpelvicmuscles. These need specific and careful instruction. We recommend an individual assessment of how to perform the correct hip strengthening exercises.Your practitioner may refer you to a Sports Physician for further investigations if your Hip Impingement does not respond in a 4-6 week time frame. Common investigations include special XRAYS or an MRI. Sometimes a Hip injection is performed to help assess impingementWalking with a limp is not advised and can cause further hip damage . We recommend you consult a Professional ImmediatelyFor further information from regarding Hip Injury please contact our Physiotherapists on :[email protected]

An introduction to the club by Ken Broadbent.Mt Eliza Bowling Club started its new season in September and is looking to extend the great privilege and pleasure of playing lawn bowls to many more residents of Mt Eliza. Potential members would be provided with a series of coaching sessions, usually of between 6 and 8 occasions and 45 minutes duration. This coaching provides the potential member with confidence to take part in a social game of lawn bowls alongside likeminded citizens. Following a few weeks of social bowls, members can graduate to competitive games against other, nearby clubs or simply continue playing only social games.Whether you chose social or competitive bowls you will certainly learn to appreciate the lively social programme of the Mt Eliza Bowls Club. Presently there are approximately 100 male playing members, 50 female playing members and another 50 non playing members. Social games are on Wednesday and Saturday beginning at 12.30pm and you are welcome to come as a spectator to see if you find the game and surroundings (we know we are on a safe bet here) to your liking. Please arrive 30 minutes before game start time if you want to

identify someone to provide you with a nomination form or simply to make your interest known. We are positioned at 90-100 Canadian Bay Road, opposite the Community Centre and behind CB’s.It is not an expensive sport, a typical outgoing for a two match a week player averages around $20 per week over the 8 month season, then there is the one off cost for the bowling uniform, and the white only uniform is a thing of the past. Each club has its very own coloured uniform.Through the bowling season there are typically 5 to7 organised games each week, some social, some competitive, some females only; others are mixed gender. In addition the club organises regular social functions for members including happy hour (or two) at 5.00 pm every Friday evening. Our members range from 16 years old to 90+ so you are never too young or old to start. Why not try our favourite, healthy and active, sport. If you do want to contact us to request a nomination form, please [email protected] or ring our secretary on 9770 2391.
