Tenth Sunday after Pentecost

Our Mission

As an interdenominational Christian community,

we worship God in spirit and truth;

teach and encourage the Christian faith;

support the spiritual needs of our congregation, and

reach out to others with the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

The Village Chapel An Enduring Vision of Christian Unity

“It is believed by many that the influence of the Chapel is far reaching and that its message

going out Sunday by Sunday to its world congregation, will have great effect in uniting the

Christian forces of the land into a fellowship and a brotherhood unit until it can be said

again as it was said of old: ‘See how these Christians love one another.’” The Rev’d William B.

Hannon, “The Pinehurst Outlook,” November, 1924.

As The Village Chapel begins its second century of worship and service to God, we are

emboldened by our founding principles of Christian unity and community service, which

were inspired by the words and example of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ; through His

death and resurrection; the Great Commission; and His prayer for unity “that we all may

be one.”

Located in the center and present at the inception of a community of religious expression

- and seeking to be in harmony with the fellowship that has been a basic principle in the

Village of Pinehurst - The Village Chapel offers a unique and gracious vision to its members

and the community beyond: The actual reality of a church that is thankful for, dependent

on, and inspired by the saving grace of Jesus Christ; a church that is welcoming, prayerful,

and pre-eminent in the life of our community; and a church that—without regard for

religious divisions within the Body of Christ—will always proclaim in thought, word, and

deed the Good News that we are all united in Jesus Christ!

“This Chapel will always stand for Christian Unity. Anyone who reads the 17th Chapter of

St. John will believe that we are carrying out the desires of Jesus Christ. We believe that

there is a deep blessedness in Christian fellowship. In whatever household of faith you were

born, whatever creed you now profess, you can come to this sanctuary and feel at home in

your Father’s house. Our constant prayers rise to the throne of God for our nation in these

days that call for sacrifice, courage and faith. We cordially invite you to worship with us.”

The Village Chapel’s welcoming statement, 1924.

If you are visiting this morning, we welcome you to The Village Chapel

and hope that you are with us again soon. If you are visiting us via livestream this morning,

we welcome you and hope that you will join us again soon, in person,

or continue to join us via livestream at 9:30 or 11:00 a.m.

I believe in one God the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, and of all things visible and invisible; and in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God; begotten of his Father before all worlds, God of God, Light of Light, very God of very God, begotten, not made, being of one substance with the Father; by whom all things were made; who for us men and for our salvation came down from heaven, and was incarnate by the Holy Ghost of the Virgin Mary, and was made man; and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate; he suffered and was buried; and the third day He rose again according to the Scriptures, and ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of the Father; and he shall come again, with glory, to judge both the quick and the dead; whose kingdom shall have no end. And I believe in the Holy Ghost the Lord, and Giver of Life, who proceedeth from the Father and the Son; who with the Father and the Son together is worshiped and glorified; who spake by the Prophets. And I believe one holy catholic and Apostolic Church; I acknowledge one Baptism for the remission of sins; and I look for the resurrection of the dead; and the life of the world to come. Amen.

Prayers for the Church and People

Invitation to Communion

Prayer of General Confession (People) Almighty God, Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, maker of all things, judge of all men: we acknowledge and bewail our manifold sins and wickedness, which we from time to time, most grievously have committed by thought, word, and deed, against thy divine Majesty, provoking most justly thy wrath and indignation against us. We do earnestly repent, and are heartily sorry for these our misdoings. The remembrance of them is grievous unto us, the burden of them is intolerable. Have mercy upon us, have mercy upon us, most merciful Father; for thy Son our Lord Jesus Christ's sake, forgive us all that is past; and grant

4

that we may ever hereafter serve and please thee in newness of life to the honor and glory of thy Name; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

People: We lift them up unto the Lord. Minister: Let us give thanks unto our Lord God. People: It is meet and right so to do.

Preface (proper prefaces as appointed) Therefore, with Angels and Archangels and with all the company of heaven, we laud and magnify thy glorious Name; evermore praising thee, and saying:

Holy, Holy, Holy, Lord God of Hosts, heaven and earth are full of thy glory. Glory be to thee, O Lord Most High. Blessed is he who cometh in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest.

Consecration of the Elements

The Lord's Prayer (People)

Prayer of Humble Access (People) We do not presume to come to this thy Table, O merciful Lord, trusting in our own righteousness, but in thy manifold and great mercies. We are not worthy so much as to gather up the crumbs under thy Table. But thou art the same Lord, whose property is always to have mercy: Grant us therefore, gracious Lord, so to eat the flesh of thy dear Son Jesus Christ, and to drink his blood, that our sinful bodies may be made clean by his body, and our souls washed through his most precious blood, and that we may evermore dwell in Him, and He in us. Amen.

Holy Communion

Prayer of Thanksgiving (People) Almighty and everliving God, we most heartily thank thee, for that thou dost vouchsafe to feed us who have duly received these holy mysteries, with the spiritual food of the most precious Body and Blood of thy Son our Savior Jesus Christ; and dost assure us thereby of thy favour and goodness towards us; and that we are very members incorporate in the mystical body of thy Son, which is the blessed company of all faithful people; and are also heirs through hope of thy everlasting kingdom, by the merits of his most precious death and passion. And we humbly beseech thee, O heavenly Father, so to assist us with thy grace, that we may continue in that holy fellowship, and do all such good works as thou hast prepared for us to walk in; through Jesus Christ our Lord, to whom, with thee and the Holy Ghost, be all honour and glory, world without end. Amen.

Benediction

Minister: Let us go forth into the world, rejoicing in the Spirit! People: Thanks be to God! Postlude All Glory Be to God on High Max Reger

Scripture Readings

Genesis 37:1-4, 12-28 Jacob lived in the land where his father had stayed, the land of Canaan. 2 This is the account of Jacob’s family line. Joseph, a young man of seventeen, was tending the flocks with his brothers, the sons of Bilhah and the sons of Zilpah, his father’s wives, and he brought their father a bad report about them. 3 Now Israel loved Joseph more than any of his other sons, because he had been born to him in his old age; and he made an ornate robe for him. 4 When his brothers saw that their father loved him more than any of them, they hated him and could not speak a kind word to him. 12 Now his brothers had gone to graze their father’s flocks near Shechem, 13 and Israel said to Joseph, “As you know, your brothers are grazing the flocks near Shechem. Come, I am going to send you to them.” “Very well,” he replied. 14 So he said to him, “Go and see if all is well with your brothers and with the flocks, and bring word back to me.” Then he sent him off from the Valley of Hebron. When Joseph arrived at Shechem, 15 a man found him wandering around in the fields and asked him, “What are you looking for?” 16 He replied, “I’m looking for my brothers. Can you tell me where they are grazing their flocks?” 17 “They have moved on from here,” the man answered. “I heard them say, ‘Let’s go to Dothan.’” So Joseph went after his brothers and found them near Dothan. 18 But they saw him in the distance, and before he reached them, they plotted to kill him. 19 “Here comes that dreamer!” they said to each other. 20 “Come now, let’s kill him and throw him into one of these cisterns and say that a ferocious animal devoured him. Then we’ll see what comes of his dreams.” 21 When Reuben heard this, he tried to rescue him from their hands. “Let’s not take his life,” he said. 22 “Don’t shed any blood. Throw him into this cistern here in the wilderness, but don’t lay a hand on him.” Reuben said this to rescue him from them and take him back to his father. 23 So when Joseph came to his brothers, they stripped him of his robe—the ornate robe he was wearing— 24 and they took him and threw him into the cistern. The cistern was empty; there was no water in it. 25 As they sat down to eat their meal, they looked up and saw a caravan of Ishmaelites coming from Gilead. Their camels were loaded with spices, balm and myrrh, and they were on their way to take them down to Egypt. 26 Judah said to his brothers, “What will we gain if we kill our brother and cover up his blood? 27 Come, let’s sell him to the Ishmaelites and not lay our hands on him; after all, he is our brother, our own flesh and blood.” His brothers agreed. 28 So when the Midianite merchants came by, his brothers pulled Joseph up out of the cistern and sold him for twenty shekels of silver to the Ishmaelites, who took him to Egypt.

Psalm 105:1-6, 16-22, 45b 1 Give praise to the LORD, proclaim his name; make known among the nations what he has done. 2 Sing to him, sing praise to him; tell of all his wonderful acts. 3 Glory in his holy name; let the hearts of those who seek the LORD rejoice. 4 Look to the LORD and his strength; seek his face always. 5 Remember the wonders he has done, his miracles, and the judgments he pronounced, 6 you his servants, the descendants of Abraham, his chosen ones, the children of Jacob. 16 He called down famine on the land and destroyed all their supplies of food; 17 and he sent a man before them—Joseph, sold as a slave. 18 They bruised his feet with shackles, his neck was put in irons, 19 till what he foretold came to pass, till the word of the LORD proved him true. 20 The king sent and released him, the ruler of peoples set him free. 21 He made him master of his household, ruler over all he possessed, 22 to instruct his princes as he pleased and teach his elders wisdom. 45 Praise the LORD.

Romans 10:5-15 5 Moses writes this about the righteousness that is by the law: “The person who does these things will live by them.” 6 But the righteousness that is by faith says: “Do not say in your heart, ‘Who will ascend into heaven?’” (that is, to bring Christ down) 7 “or ‘Who will descend into the deep?’” (that is, to bring Christ up from the dead). 8 But what does it say? “The word is near you; it is in your mouth and in your heart,” that is, the message concerning faith that we proclaim: 9 If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved. 11 As Scripture says, “Anyone who believes in him will never be put to shame.” 12 For there is no difference between Jew and Gentile—the same Lord is Lord of all and richly blesses all who call on him, 13 for, “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.” 14 How, then, can they call on the one they have not believed in? And how can they believe in the one of whom they have not heard? And how can they hear without someone preaching to them? 15 And how can anyone preach unless they are sent? As it is written: “How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news!”

Matthew 14:22-33 22 Immediately Jesus made the disciples get into the boat and go on ahead of him to the other side, while he dismissed the crowd. 23 After he had dismissed them, he went up on a mountainside by himself to pray. Later that night, he was there alone, 24 and the boat was already a considerable distance from land, buffeted by the waves because the wind was against it. 25 Shortly before dawn Jesus went out to them, walking on the lake. 26 When the disciples saw him walking on the lake, they were terrified. “It’s a ghost,” they said, and cried out in fear. 27 But Jesus immediately said to them: “Take courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid.” 28 “Lord, if it’s you,” Peter replied, “tell me to come to you on the water.” 29 “Come,” he said. Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water and came toward Jesus. 30 But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and, beginning to sink, cried out, “Lord, save me!” 31 Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him. “You of little faith,” he said, “why did you doubt?” 32 And when they climbed into the boat, the wind died down. 33 Then those who were in the boat worshiped him, saying, “Truly you are the Son of God.”

Dear Village Chapel family, We welcome you to worship in the Sanctuary. Please understand that no one is expected to be here at any time if you feel, for any reason, that it is better to stay home. Services will continue to be livestreamed at 2 times on Sunday mornings: 9:30 a.m., and 11:00 a.m. Here is the link to view our services: www.youtube.com/c/Tvcpinehurst1. The following are some of the procedures implemented for your safety and well-being:

• Hand sanitizer stations are placed at the front and back entrances to the church, and the two entrances to the Administration Building, and at the front entrance to the Care Cottage.

• A sanitizing “fogger” is used before and after each service to disinfect the sanctuary. • Greeters will encourage those attending services to observe social distancing. • Masks, although optional, are encouraged. Disposable masks are available for those who need them. • Offering plates will be on pedestals in the narthex and the sacristy to eliminate the passing of the

plates. • Scripture readings will be read by the pastors at all three services. • We will no longer have ushers for the foreseeable future. Instead, greeters will welcome and pass out

the bulletins, which are for single, one-time use. The greeters will collect any discarded bulletins at the end of each service for disposal.

• Youth and children's Sunday School, the nursery, and children's sermon assembly are discontinued for the time being.

• Congregational singing is discontinued for the foreseeable future. Please see the July Herald for more information regarding singing.

These procedures are not meant to be comprehensive – there are additional measures that will be implemented - offered to provide ample assurance of our purpose in minimizing any risk to your health in being here. The Chapel office is open for regular office hours (8:00 a.m. – 4 p.m.). The following procedures have been implemented to protect the health and well-being of our Chapel staff and members:

• While masks or other face coverings will not be required, visitors to our office will be asked to honor any staff request to wear a mask while in the building, or in different offices. In addition, staff members will honor any request made by visitors to wear a mask when in direct contact.

• Committee chairs may issue directives regarding face coverings for their own meetings at their discretion.

• Disposable masks and hand sanitizer are available to all visitors. While masks are optional, we ask that everyone entering the building utilize the hand sanitizer dispenser.

• Especially during this time, we ask anyone who may feel sick or have a fever to refrain from visiting the church and to handle business via phone or email.

• In the event any office visitor tests positive for COVID-19, we ask that you notify the office if you have visited the church at any time during the 14 days before your positive test so that anyone you may have been in contact with may discern whether a test is needed for themselves. In addition, if you have knowingly been exposed to someone with COVID-19, we ask that you take the necessary precautions before visiting the Chapel.

Blessings in Christ, Pastor John

Board of Trustees Nominations

Brothers and Sisters in Christ, thank you, thank you for your diligence to the Chapel and this process. To date your Nominating Committee has ten nominations because of your efforts. During normal times we would ask you to return a nomination form to the Chapel office by September 30th, but this year is different. We are attempting to work around this virus while simultaneously making it easier for you. If you have a prospective nomination, please call that individual and seek their interest in being a nominee. If the individual:

• Is a member of the Chapel and dedicated Christian;

• Possesses business, financial, and organizational skills;

• Is congenial, a good communicator, a team player;

• Is willing to support the Pastors ministry efforts, uphold the Chapel’s By-Laws and Mission Statement, and execute the directions in the Chapel’s Strategic Plan,

• Is “willing to serve,” then simply contact any member of the Nominating Committee listed below by email or phone and they will assist you in moving the nomination forward. Angel Tree Pre sign up

Thank you for your continued support of The Village Chapel's Angel Tree Program! We couldn't serve all these families without your ongoing generosity.

This year due to the COVID-19 pandemic our community's needs are greater than ever. In Moore County the unemployment rate is going from less than 5% in 2019 to more than 12.6% in May 2020 and still rising.

Due to the continued threat of the virus, some of our procedures will change this year. Please consider donating early by putting "Angel Tree" on the memo line or contacting me now for a family request and I will send you a family in September. This will allow time for online shopping if you are more comfortable with that and it will give us a better idea on the number of families we can adopt. God bless you.
