Well, we’re all grown up now.As we reach the end of our high school road and it comes time

to say goodbye to yesterday, last week or two months ago, it’s never a right time to say goodbye to all the memories we have made with each other.

You may think your future begins June 15 when you walk across that stage, but in reality it began when you walked across this courtyard for the first time in August 2006. That is when the path for our future was made.

But before we discuss future plans, let’s take a trip down memory lane. Over the four years we have walked these halls of Kinston High a lot has changed, especially our taste in fashion. Remember when we all were begging our mothers to get us a flight jacket? Or when Dem Franchise Boys had us wanting a white t-shirt? What about when you took a trip to the closest hair store and didn’t leave without getting some new Chinese slippers or a couple of banana clips? Now these trends are long gone and would be a fashion don’t. We went from baggy tees and forces to skinny jeans and blazers.

Remember when Chris Brown was hot? Yeah, that was freshman and sophomore year. I remember when skipping used to be scary; it’s not that serious. We have experienced so much growth with each other, especially when we matured from Urban Chat to Tag to Myspace to Facebook. We haven’t taken over Twitter and Skype yet, but we have to leave something to the underclassmen.

And what about the cell phones? I remember when camera phones made you cool. If you didn’t have a camera on your phone, you basically didn’t exist. Now if you don’t have some type of exotic phone with some kind of Facebook capabilities, you might as well not have a phone.

Do you remember when every sentence included “boy bye,” “believe that,” or “childish?” Now you never hear one without “ugh, you fake,” “is she?” or “turn it up.”

How about when everyone wanted to learn how to do the Superman, Batman, Spiderman, or any other dance about some man? I don’t even remember how to do them because now all the dances are about jerks. What about when everyone wanted to be a single lady? “If you like it then you should’ve put a ring on it” was so unfair to males.

The way things have transformed over these four years have only made us better people. In our four years of high school we have had two principals; too many bomb threats; two state championships; a huge improvement in football, baseball, softball, and soccer; the tragic loss of schoolmates; the loss of a great artist, Michael Jackson; remediation periods added to the schedule; a new resource officer; closed lunches all year; an increase in our school’s EOC scores; and, perhaps most historic, the election of the first African-American as President of the United States.

This is the way you should remember our years of high school, the beginning path to our futures. Remember every downfall we may have had. Remember every improvement we have made. You can even remember the burning bathroom trashcans. As long as you remember that here at Kinston High is how your future start-ed. You may have had some regrets, but even with all the “ifs,” you still made it.

A multitude of students earned recognition in citizen-ship, scholarship, athletics, fine arts, music, career and technical education, leadership and service, and journalism at Kinston High’s annual Awards Day ceremony, held on Friday, May 28, in the Performing Arts Center.

More than 100 parents, presenters, teachers and stu-dents were on hand to watch the yearly awards ceremony, which traditionally kicks off a junior/senior weekend in which most upperclassmen celebrate the end of the school year with a trip to the beach.

“Awards Day serves a good purpose,” senior Brenda Jones said. “We get to congratulate our friends on their achieve-ments all four years. Junior/senior is a big celebration, es-pecially for the seniors, being that a lot of us are separating, going to different schools and won’t see each other for a long time. It’s the last big shin-dig together as a whole before ev-eryone goes to school.”

Several dozen seniors trav-eled to the beach with some extra luggage in the form of scholarships, plaques and tro-phies they earned. Listed be-low are the awards won by the class of 2010:

I probably will not be the first, but I want to be one of the many to say “Congrats Class of 2010!”

It may be the end, but it’s also a new beginning.

We’ve worked so hard to get to this point in our lives and through all of the com-plaining, issues, and impa-tiently awaiting graduation, it’s here.

Yes! Another goal reached! This is only one of the

many milestones that many never get to see, a point in life that I hope we all remember,

Congrats, Class of ‘10; now it’s time for new goals

a bittersweet moment, some-thing that you can say you ac-complished and the real start of life.

I never thought that our four years would fly like ev-eryone told me it would, but they really have.

Don’t you remember the first day of school? I do -- as well as my second, third and fourth. Freshman year, we

were surrounded by older people and now we’re the older ones and on top of the totem pole. Gosh, seniority is a great thing. For the life of me, I could never understand then why the seniors never seemed to be in class.

Well now, I see. We truly have nothing to do. OK, we do. We just choose not to do so.

Kinston High School: A life lesson in itself. The place where many great friendships evolved and even the place where some fell apart.

From the laughs to the cries

and back to the many lessons learned, overall high school has been a great thing and has been a teacher. This experi-ence comes once in a lifetime and I hope we’ll all enjoy and cherish it.

I remember being in el-

ementary school and my only goal was to go to college.

Now that we’re almost there, it’s time to begin a list of new goals.

Much success to you all, and I’ll see you at the ten-year reunion!

Planning for college can be quite a handful your senior year, and it may become very stressful.

True, your senior year can be fun, and you get oppor-tunities to lay back a lot, but you pay for it when it comes down to applying for college.

College is nothing like what you have experienced before; You have to literally give 100 percent in high school to get

into a good college. Yes, peo-ple in society are expecting your generation to get a head start off in life beginning with you high school career.

Extracurricular activities are becoming a must in high

school. Going the extra mile is what colleges are starting to look for in a student—along with good grades.

Getting involved in clubs is another option to take. Everyone is not the athletic type, but clubs can be an ad-vantage for many.

Everyone who is thinking about a bright future needs to start getting themselves involved. Don’t wait on your

parents, or your teacher, or even your friends. No matter what, it’s your decision.

A higher education is im-portant in our generation. If you want to succeed in life, you have to start preparing early.

High school is where to start. If you want control over your life -- where you want to be, who you want to be, and where you want to end

up -- then you have to build up determination now.

Since you were younger, everyone has undoubtedly drilled into your mind how important college is and I know a lot of it might sound like a cliché, but it’s true!

It never seems more real then when you are approach-ing your senior year and you have to decide where you want to go.

Senior advice for next year’s seniors and beyond

Prom14 - The Viking Press - June 2010 www.thevikingpress.com

Those who attended this year’s prom seem to agree that it was one of the best in recent memory. The theme was “Forever Tonight.” The

prom committee really worked hard at making the gym look phenomenal. A special thanks goes out to Mrs. Holland, Mrs. Wessell, Mrs. Gutten-berger, Mrs. Wattson, and all of the other teachers and students who helped out. As with every year, people arrived in extravagant rides like Model-T’s, party buses, and stretch limos. Cameras flashed and mouths dropped as the rides pulled up to the prom. After the big entrances, it was time to party. As soon as guests hit the gym, they were blinded by flashing lights and left nearly deaf from the booming music. All in all it was a great night, and one in which every one would remember forever. Hence the words “Forever Tonight.”

Prom is a night to remember forever

Seniors Bobbi Pompey and Jerron Leary were crowned Prom Queen and King.

“It was fun, I enjoyed my last prom as a senior. It was nice seeing all the girls in their nice frilly dresses and guys in their bow ties and tuxes. Everyone looked nice and I will cherish this memory forever.”

-Kourtney Peoples

“To me, prom was very smooth. It was very in-teresting because I didn’t think that I could actually win (prom king). My date was Europa Bognar. It was really cool because people didn’t expect that.”

-Jerron Leary

“It was nice to know my classmates voted for me and thought I deserved to win; it made me feel spe-cial. It was nice that this year prom king and queen broke the stereotype.”

-Bobbi Pompey

“I went to the prom with Ruthie Harper. I really en-joyed myself.”

-Tyree Pittman

“After prom night I went to Greenville with my friends. We were all over Greenville that night.”

-Albert Pridgen

To the editor:We cannot speak for our maturity, but prom is certainly

a party, and we cannot imagine a better one. Futher-more, this year’s PROM was especially important in light of the recent tragedy. Everyone who was involved in the effort is to be commended, be they 14 or 140. Thank you. The sacrifice of time and money are equally impor-tant, and at events such as this, both are equally under-appreciated. So let us say it loudly and proudly: Thank you PROM Committee! Thank you PROM waiters! Thank you PROM photographers! Thank you PROM chaperones! Thank you students who made the PROM special just by being there! Everyone involved deserves our heart felt thanks.
