Also, we will be observing Independence Day in the liturgy and music that day. In terms of campaign news, we are pleased to announce that our first goal has been accomplished. A goal of one-third of the $500,000 to be raised was reached in the Quiet Phase of the campaign. As of this writing, on June 14th, we have received 29 advance gifts, totalling, $224,230. The Steering Committee is confident the “public” portion of the campaign will raise the rest. Beginning in August, we will be sharing regular updates regarding the projects and the campaign. Finally, our Celebration Sunday on August 26th, will mark the successful completion of “Generation to Generation.” The Vestry joins me in thanking each of you for your support of “G2G”! After this Sunday, the choir will take its summer sabbatical (July 8 through August 19). Frontline Faith Project, July 1 Earlier this year, Dick Drury, a member of the parish who attends the 7:45 AM service with his wife Marie, brought to my attention an outreach ministry that distributes MP3 players to military chaplains. The chaplains then give these MP3s to soldiers in need of spiritual support. Dick, who is a retired U.S. Air Force brigadier general, gave me a copy of one of the MP3 players, which includes seven hours of Christian music, teaching, and prayers. It is an outstanding program and a very worthwhile project. Through my discretionary fund, I will be sending to each parishioner and friend on our military prayer list their own Frontline Faith player. Mary Miner is coordinating this project from our office. On Sunday, July 1, Dick will set up a table in the foyer to receive any donations you wish to send to the military men and women of our country. The cost is $24 for each player. TASTE AND SEEA “Sampler” of

The ART of Engaging Holy ScriptureSmall Groups Curriculum

Saturday, July 28, 10:00 a.m. to NoonSaturday, August 25, 10:00 a.m. to Noon

The Educational Annex

The ART of Engaging Holy Scripture (TAEHS) is a unique small group Bible study curriculum that is much more than a typical Bible Study, TAEHS imparts a lively method of engaging the Scriptures through reading and study, conversational prayer and silent prayer, and group sharing. This dynamic method gradually leads to the experience of the Holy Spirit’s presence in the Scriptures, one’s self, and our sisters and brothers.

The experiential focus makes all the difference. Not only is one’s relationship with Christ strengthened, but learning is greatly enhanced. The small group context offers the opportunity for meaningful friendships to develop within the larger faith community, and have great fun doing so! The ART of Engaging Holy Scripture curriculum is designed for small groups of eight to twelve persons. Groups meet weekly for one hour. The weekly meetings are led by a facilitator who receives extensive training and practice in the core components of the curriculum and are based upon the Study Guide that all participants purchase ($75 for the first year). In addition to guiding the weekly meetings, the Study Guide provides careful directions for participants to engage in reading, praying, and studying the Bible on their own. Each week the Study Guide leads participants through three personal study sessions that take about 20 minutes each to complete. At the following week’s meeting, participants report their experiences of engaging the Scriptures. For people who are new to the Bible, the Study Guide includes clear instructions for how to navigate one’s way. Such things as what the Bible actually consists of, how to look up Biblical references, why there are so many translations and how to evaluate them, and how to choose a study Bible are included. The Study Guide also provides a succinct portrayal of the Story line of the Bible such that the entire Biblical Story is quickly comprehended. It then concisely relates this Story line to our Eucharistic worship. In this way the curriculum provides a Biblical and Ecclesiological framework that dramatically aids learning. The weekly small group sessions are based upon extensive research in small group dynamics. They are carefully designed to allow for the development of meaningful friendships, to foster a profound learning community, and to create a sacred space that welcomes the Holy Spirit. The ART of Engaging Holy Scripture curriculum begins with a one year foundation of three courses that comprise 30 weeks of studies. The first course establishes the practice of the method, the small group process, and facility with the Bible and the Judeo-Christian Story. The second is Knowing & Following Jesus, and the third, Community of the Spirit. Following the first year, four years of curriculum are available. Most of the New Testament and major portions of the Old Testament are in development. At St. Luke’s on the Lake, our intention is to offer TAEHS groups, beginning in September, throughout the week at the church and in neighborhoods, during the daytime and in the evening. To sign up for a TAEHS Sampler or for more information, please text or telephone the Reverend Parker Jameson at 512-913-0116 or email him at [email protected].

THANK YOU! to everyone who donated funds to help the HIV/AIDS orphans of West Buganda! In addition to the $3500 from Outreach, funds were received from St. Luke’s Study Guild, and many other generous individuals. The funds will ensure that these children receive care & educationfor the next year. On behalf of Bishop Godfrey Makumbi & the orphan children of West Buganda, blessings & grateful thanks for your generosity, love, concern & prayers, which are so much appreciated......... Dear SLOL Friends and Family,

We just took a two week, 60 mile trekking trip into a new area of the mountains this month and we were amazed at what we found. It was so different from the area that we normally work in and it was only a few valleys over. This was a very remote area of the High Atlas range. There are still villages that have no electricity and have no road access of any kind. Their food was completely different to what we are used to. Their language and accents were hard to understand. It had a different cultural feel to it. Many of the villages were initially afraid, or at least wary of us. No other foreigners ever get back to these places. We were the first white people some of them had ever seen in person! As you can imagine, it is a great honor, but also a difficult thing to be the first follower of Jesus to set foot in a place, ever... in the history of the world! We were only invited into homes about half the time, so we camped near the villages the rest of the time. The homes that we were invited in to were difficult to share the Gospel in due to a lack of good interaction with the families. This has proven to be a very difficult area to work in, but we will continue to press on there. We are currently planning a prayer and intercession trip there this fall to pierce the darkness that has a hold and to intercede of behalf of the villagers. Join us in praying for these people! We are also excited to get to spend a few weeks in Spain after such a busy spring. We calculated that we were apart for 84 days of the last 5 months:( So it is going to be a nice break to take a little Spanish vacation together as a family. We really appreciate your support and prayers.

CHILDREN AND FAMILY MINISTRIES

“69-94% of evangelicalchildrenareleavingthechurchshortlyafter they graduate from high school.Admittedly, this problem is temptingto lay at the feet of our culture. It’sHollywood’s fault, or the work ofsecularismrunrampant.Butisitreallythateasy?TheScripturesareclearthatthehomeiswherefaithisnurturedandpassedfromgenerationtogeneration.(Deuteronomy 6:1-9, 2 Timothy 1:5).. . . .Could it be that the church hasbecome such a trusted partner for“outsourcing” spiritual growth, that arobust Christ-centered spiritual life inthehomeseemslessimportant?[fromfaithbeginsathome.comwebsite]Hmm. How many times did you pray with your family this past week? What scriptures did you talk about at dinner? Did you take time today to share a God Sighting with your kids? Our VBS this year centered around the courage of Daniel, as he fought to keep his faith in the midst of a faithless culture. Sound familiar? We learned that though change, loneliness and fear may abound, God is with us. Daniel prayed openly, though he clearly understood that he could be and was punished. Daniel was not afraid to talk openly about his love for God’s commandments -- the Word, the Bible -- even when he clearly could have been immediately put to death. He lived his life the same way, no matter where he was. Though Daniel was placed in a faithless society with no support system of Temple or church, he kept HIS faith. Why? How could he have possibly withstood the influence of the lavish palace life, the decadence? He was raised in a home that walked and talked their faith and had “passed from generation to generation” the Word and love of the Father. Although taken to Babylon as a teen, he did not “leave the church,” but instead embraced the

difference he could make with God’s help. Yes. God was with him, because he did not just visit God on the Sabbath. What this translates into for us in present day Austin, is this: - The Church, as the Body of Christ, is our spiritual family we rely on to help us raise our children (and sometimes ourselves) in the Word. Basic life lessons are taught and relations are established to reinforce that Family we are a part of. - The church, as a destination, gives us a place to be together, experiencing God’s love. Sometimes the destination even changes, as we bring our mission to places outside of the campus. As part of our ministry to Children and Family, we want to be a part of your family’s journey. We know how hard it is to live in this world. But God instructs us: Makesureyourchildren learnthem [God’s commandments]. Talkabout them when you are at home.Talkabout themwhenyouwalkalongtheroad.Speakaboutthemwhenyougotobed.Andspeakaboutthemwhenyougetup.-Deuteronomy6:7,NIrV Every week, during the school year, we get to spend about an hour with your kids in instruction of the Word. And we love it! But they need more. So this ministry’s emphasis in the coming school year will be on Families. The Parish Family. Your Family. I hope you will join us in our endeavors. We want to continue to make a difference not just in the lives of those we reach out to, but also to make a difference in our “churched” kids as well. Let’s work together to reverse the percentage quoted at the first of this article. And work together to be a true community in Christ and Christ to the world.Amen. As this article is being written, our VBS is just getting started. Well, the part where the kids come and learn about God is just getting started. The preparation – decorations, supplies, planning, writing – all started last December. Our Director team started working with Station Leaders (the volunteers who teach the lessons in

the various areas) in March. And of course, our beloved campus went through another near miraculous transformation, this time into Ancient Babylon, at the direction of our Artist in Residence, Valerie Bissett. She ONCE AGAIN took us back in time with her visions of the Ishtaar Gate and the Hanging Gardens and a fun lions’ den to boot! With the help of countless volunteers (thank you VERY much) we were able to walk among the Marketplace Shops and palace gardens of Babylon. Speaking of volunteers, here’s my first God Sighting (an occurrence in every day life that reminds us that God is with us!): Three weeks before the start of VBS, we were short by at least 30 volunteers. So, I sent out a message for you all to pray really diligently for God to bring us what we needed. Boy howdy! Y’all must have gotten busy, because 10 days later – and continuing right up to the day before we started – the volunteers poured in! We were very blessed this year to have over 140 volunteers available and working the week of VBS. God is so Good! Thanks to all of them, the many gracious donations of time, treasures and talent, without whom NONE of what we do is possible. As for participants, we had 240 kids plus more in our Nursery (volunteers’ children under 3 years old). God was truly glorified the week of June 11-15th. Know that __% of the kids were “new” to St. Luke’s. The kids learned all about the courage it takes to stand up for what you believe in, even in a world that doesn’t believe. Please read in next month’s column for more statistics, God Sightings and a report on our NetsForLife service project. The news will make you clap your hands in joy! For now, though, if you see Robin Miner (Director for Elementary VBS), Dana Thompson (Director for Lil Babylon-Preschool/Kinder VBS), or Ann Thompson (Impromptu Coordinator of All Things Supplies), please take a moment to thank them for their wonderful gifts and many hours they invested to make this year’s VBS, well, THE BEST VBS EVER!!

Don’t forget what’s up this month:

Operation Christmas Child Collections: This is a ministry St. Luke’s has been involved in for many years. We do so much for kids who have so little. In addition to being a relay station for the collection of boxes each year, St. Luke’s families donate scads of stuff that our kids are able to put together in boxes. Please do not forget that we have this long-standing ministry that benefits so many. Throughout the month of July, please remember to send as your child’s contribution in Rite K or Little Liturgy, those socks, “school supplies”, and small toys that we can stuff in the boxes come late October or so. The stores will have their best back-to-school sales in mid-July, so keep your eyes on the circulars and pick up a few extras to donate. Eucharist (Communion) Instruction Class: Since our Table here at St. Luke’s is open to all who have been baptized, we don’t have a formal “First Communion” class or Rite that we perform when our kids take THEIR First Communion. We invite parents to make that decision as a family and provide whatever instructional materials we have for them to do to prepare their child for this milestone. However, I would remind you that this is a very important step in your young person’s life, so we would like to know when your child reaches this milestone. Our Parish Records will show when your child officially becomes a Communicant. We are also happy to provide a First Communion Certificate. Some parents prefer to have their child led in formal instruction by someone other than them. We had this class last summer with great response, so we are offering Eucharist Instruction again this summer. If you would like your child to be involved in this class, please call LoriAnn Lavallee at 266-2455. The class will be custom designed to the ages who register, but is optimal to ages 4 through 12 (though older children are welcomed as well). We would like to have at least 6 children involved in the class, as group participation is a key element of the curriculum’s design. As demand

requires, we will try to offer the seminar class again in the Spring before Easter, as this is when many of our families have traditionally celebrated First Communion with their children. Communication. Please note that it is sometimes hard to keep connected with your Parish Family during the summer months. We are all going in so many different directions, we lose track of what is going on. The best way to keep connected and informed is to read this newsletter ☺, and be on the email lists for the weekly Parent Blast (contact [email protected] if you are NOT on this list) and the Parish-wide Cliff Notes from Nancy Phillips (contact [email protected] with current info, please). Save the Date: August 26th is Rally Day! As is our tradition (and it is just fun, anyway!) we will celebrate the beginning of the 2012-2013 “education” year during the regular Sunday School hour, 10:15a-11:15a. Mark your calendars as this year’s activities are sure to whet your appetite for the coming year. Watch your Parish wide e-blasts, Parent weekly emails, and this newsletter for more details as they become available. But mainly, just BE THERE! We look forward to seeing you and your children on Sunday. It just wouldn’t be the same without you.Peace to you,LoriAnn & RobinChildren and Family Ministries

ST. LUKE’S AND OUTREACH

FIRST SATURDAYConversations About Faith, Following Jesus,

and the Episcopal ChurchThe Library, facilitated by Laura Callender & Fr. Parker Jameson

First Saturday of the Month (with one exception)10:00 a.m to 12:00 noon

• Do you have questions about why or if being a Christian still makes sense in the twenty-first century?• Do you have questions about being a Christian who lives out their discipleship within the Episcopal Church?• Do you have questions about faith or the Church that you’d like to ask, but assume everyone else already knows the answer (which they don’t) and so don’t ask in order to avoid the risk of being embarrassed?• Do you have possibly “dangerous” questions about faith that you would like to ask (i.e. “I’m not sure I believe in the virgin birth of Jesus.” “Where does evolution fit into a life of faith?”) but wonder if others will react as if you’re rocking the boat? (they have those kinds of questions, too)

If any of those descriptions fit you, then welcome to First Saturday! First Saturday is an ongoing series of conversations intended to engage us in faith, following Jesus, and the Episcopal Church. It’s a safe place to ask the questions you have wanted to ask but thought unsafe to ask in the church, to express your doubts, to live with uncertainty while on the spiritual pilgrimage. First Saturday is a community of pilgrims. What will we do?Between 10:00 a.m and 12:00 noon, over coffee and tea, we’ll pray, have a teaching to frame the day’s topic, and together we’ll engage a variety of topics about a life of faith in the contemporary world. When will we meet? We’ll meet on the following nine Saturdays: September 8 (not a first Saturday!) October 6, November 3, December 1, January 5, February 2, March 2, April 6, and May 4. Why participate?• If you want to prepare to join the Episcopal Church through Confirmation.• If you have questions about the life of faith and following Jesus.• If you have a desire or sense a call to go deeper into faith and following Jesus. To join in First Saturday, please telephone or e-mail the Church Office by August 31st at 512-266-2455 or [email protected]. Child care can be provided; please let us know ages and names by August 24th.

Visitor and Guest Coffee Resumes September 2nd

The Visitor and Guest Coffee is on summer hiatus and resumes Sunday, September 2nd at 10:30am in the Library (downstairs beyond the Parish Fellowship Hall). In the meantime, feel free to direct all visitors, guests and newcomer questions to Barbara Frazell, 266-2455, [email protected], Linda Davis or Parker Jameson.

Dear Fr. Wyckoff,

Next year, the Episcopal Church will celebrate 75 years of service and advocacy on behalf of refugees. The work of EMM and our affiliate partners at Refugee Services of Texas build on a legacy of welcome that has offered safe haven to tens of thousands of men, women and children uprooted by war and persecution. None of this would be possible without the generosity and commitment of friends and supporters like you. Thank you so much for your contribution.

Sincerely,Deborah SteinDirector, EMM
