So Right So Smart profiles companies on the cutting edge ofincreasingly sustainable business practices who are proving that being environmentally friendly is both good for the earth and good for business. Their inspiring stories of leadership and innovative change provide hopeful models for the larger business community and other institutions. The primary focus of the film is a behind-the-scenes look at the transformation of Interface Inc., a global carpet manufacturer led by Ray Anderson, one of the early pioneers of green business practices. In 1994, Anderson read Paul Hawken’s The Ecology of Commerce and had an epiphany: the planet was in crisis and his business was contributing to the problem. Since then, Anderson has spearheaded an often-challenging effort to transform Interface to a “restorative enterprise”, and has become aninspiration to other businesses. Working with heart and commitment, Interface surrounded itself with experts insustainability to educate and hold the company accountable.

The film includes short profiles of companies who started out witha commitment to green business practices: Stonyfield Farm,Patagonia, Herman Miller, Seventh Generation and New Belgium Brewery. Prominent environmental authors and experts alsoshare their experiences and insights, including Paul Hawken,David Suzuki, Janine Benyus, Jonathan Lash, and Hunterand Amory Lovins.

in reality. On the contrary, they show it all, including the doubts, the issues, the challenges to it.”

In almost 40,000 media messages a year, youthful Americans are being told that, unless you look like supermodels and rock stars, you’re not good enough for anyone to love. Filmmaker DarrylRoberts examines America’s growing obsession with physicalbeauty and perfection, unearthing its origins, costs and deadly risks. In America the Beautiful we see how increasinglyunattainable images contribute to the rise in low self-esteem, body dismorphia, and eating disorders for young women and girls who also happen to be the beauty industry’s largest consumers. At the heart of America the Beautiful is the story of Gerren Taylor, aninnocent 12 year-old girl who hoped to become one of America’s next top supermodels. As she and her mother head down the windy road to potential stardom, viewers see her “rights of passage” on the catwalks of Marc Jacobs, DKNY and Tommy Hilfiger. Her tumultuous quest provides a mirror to the American psyche and a warning to all young girls.

Roberts dives deep into America’s culture of fear, consumption, and idolatry, seeking answers from experts in cosmetics, fashion, academia, media and celebrities, including Paris Hilton, Jessica Simpson, Martin Short, Ted Casablanca from the E! Channel, and Susan Schulz, the Editor-in-Chief of CosmoGirl.

Coral reefs are a sensitive and vital indicator of the negative impact climate change is having on the world’s oceans. In clear language, a leading marine biologist presents the science that shows how carbon dioxide emissions are pushing the world’s coral reefs tothe brink of extinction.

Coral reefs are the largest living structures on earth, home to 25% of all marine species, and a primary source of food and income for over 500 million people. In the video, Professor Ove Hoegh-Guldberg offers evidence that increased CO2 emissions have led to warming of the seas and ocean acidification, both of which have already contributed to the death of many coral reefs and may cause their mass extinction in the next few decades. He warns thatcurrent efforts to curb CO2 emissions are falling well short of what’s needed to protect coral reefs and our oceans. The presentation is illustrated with stunning high definition footage, as well as with Professor Hoegh-Guldberg’s own charts and graphs.

Professor Ove Hoegh-Guldberg, Ph. D., is Director of the Global Change Institute at the University of Queensland, Australia. Threeof his publications are now the 1st, 4th and 6th most cited works over the past 10 years in the area of “climate change”.

Leading the charge to save Asian tigers are the intelligence gath-erers: three biologists from three very different countries. Their mission is to understand tigers, and their weapon is science. The challenge these biological detectives face is enormous – over the last century tiger numbers have plummeted by 95%. But despite these horrific statistics, these biologists are optimistic that not only can the world’s biggest cat be saved from extinction, but that it can thrive. Journey with three scientists who believe that by under-standing how tigers live, what they eat, and what habitats they prefer, we can ensure they remain in our forests, allowed to livetheir elusive lives in peace. Nestled in the mountains of China’s Sichuan Province is the Wolong Nature Reserve. Here, forty giant pandas and a dedicated team are playing a crucial role in increasing the country’s dwindling panda population, which currently stands at just one thousand. To increase the chances of baby panda cubs surviving, a new method ofraising cubs has been developed by scientists. The baby bears are swapped between their natural mother and a ‘surrogate mum’ — in this case veterinarian Wei Rongping. Panda Nursery witnesses this special partnership between Rongping and a female panda, who gives birth to two tiny cubs. The program follows the highs and lows of the eventful first six months of the cubs’ lives and explores the challenges facing giant pandas in the wild. Item # PAN-1036

Can the world’s only truly wild horse survive returning to theirancestral home? Relentless poaching early last century saw theoldest horse species in the world die out in their original habitat.But thanks to a breeding program in China, 27 Przewalski’s horses have returned to their homeland where their ancestors roamed –the vast 18,000 square kilometer Kala Maili prairie in West China.Accustomed to an easy life within the enclosures, back in the wild and hostile northern region, the herd faces extreme winter snows and summer droughts. Wild Horses – Return to China is thestory of the herd’s struggle for survival during their first yearback in the wild. Item # WIL-1035

Coral reefs are the “rainforests of the sea”, home to nearly one quarter of the ocean’s marine species. Discover how revolutionary new technology is providing a glimmer of hope for Bali’s oncemagnificent coral reefs. Most of Bali’s coral reefs and the marinelife that once teemed around them have been destroyed by a deadly combination of coral bleaching, partly from global warming, and fishing with explosives and cyanide. A determined Balinese com-munity and two marine scientists have invented a newtechnology that rebuilds coral reefs up to five times faster than would naturally occur. These important marine ecosystems could soon be brought back to life to once again shelter a magnificentarray of exotic marine life. Item # REE-1037

Our current industrial method of food production is increasingly viewed by many as an unsustainable system, harmful to theenvironment and public health. But what is the alternative?Fresh profiles the farmers, thinkers, and business people across the nation who are at the forefront of re-inventing food produc-tion in America. With a strong commitment to sustainability, they are changing how farms are run, how the land is cared for, and how food is distributed. Fresh opens with a short summary of the problems posed by industrialized food production, then features individuals who are pioneering new approaches to address environ-mental, health, and economic challenges throughout the food chain:

Joel Salatin, sustainable farmer who, by observing nature, devised a highly profitable rotational grazing system for his animals;

Will Allen, recipient of a Macarthur “Genius Award”, who is a leader of the urban farming movement, teaching people in the inner city the value of growing and eating healthy food;

David Ball, who revived his family’s supermarket business bypartnering with area farmers to sell affordable, locally-grown food;

Multiple environmental crises are confronting us simultaneously:climate change, resource depletion, ocean pollution, overpopula-tion, species extinction, and more. The Great Squeeze providesan overview of them all, and also looks at the causes and solutions. The film takes us on a journey through history when past civiliza-tions – The Anasazi, the Mayans and the Easter Island culture – made the same mistakes: growing too fast, depleting their natural resources and ultimately collapsing. The disappearance of these once-thriving cultures offers insights into our own modern social order, seemingly bent on a similar short-sighted path. The Great Squeeze challenges us to learn from history and transition towards a more sustainable economy that values our environment. By changing our levels of consumption, deploying new technologies, and reordering social priorities, we can ensure a healthy planetand still live well.

Renowned scientists, thinkers and authors provide perspectiveand insights on our current state of affairs and how we canchange course, including Richard Heinberg, Edward O. Wilson, Lester Brown, Alexandra Cousteau, Jim White, Howard Kunstler and others.

Roads are the largest human artifact on the planet; they have fragmented wild landscapes and the wildlife that lives within them, ushered in the ‘age of urban sprawl,’ and challenged our sense of community. As the transportation crisis grows, a new generationof ecologists, engineers, planners and citizens are working totransform the future of the American road. Shot in stunninglocations throughout North America – including Banff National Park, Glacier National Park, Yellowstone, and the Everglades – Division Street takes us on a road-trip that looks at the promise of wildlife corridors, the potential for ‘greening’ our highway system, and the fusion of high-tech engineering with the best and brightestenvironmental research happening today. America’s road network was largely created before the rise of modern ecology. Now, with greater concern for the environment, the film asks, how do webalance those concerns with our ongoing transportation needs?

Among those featured are: Dr. Richard Forman, Prof of Landscape Ecology, Harvard University; Dr. Marty Main, Professor of Wildlife Ecology, University of Florida; and Linda Chapin, Directorof the Metropolitan Center for Regional Studies, Universityof Central Florida.

“The celebration and defense of wilderness is one of the most remarkable products of American cultural history. In less than two centuries “wild” land changed from a liability to an asset.

Now the United States leads the world in establishing national park and designated wildernesses. The story of how this has occurred is a composite of many people caring deeply about

specific places. Forever Wild explores their motivation and encourages further preservation progress.”

The Spanish Civil War may be decades old, but the wounds and grievances from the conflict continue to haunt Spain. What’s more, General Francisco Franco – the former fascist leader of Spain – still seems to hold a revered place among many. The End of Silence is a riveting film made by two long-time Swedish friends who explore that part of Spain’s past about which the Spanish themselves refuse to speak. Traveling to Spain, they find that long after the civil war and Franco’s passing in 1975, Spain is unwilling to confront its tortured past. Enter Mari Carmen España, whose grandfather was executed by the fascists 70 years ago. She is determined to find the unmarked site of his execution and extinguish the anonymity of his death through official government recognition and proper burial. She comes to symbolize the broad social reconciliation movement within Spain, culminating in The Historical Memory Law passedby the Congress of Deputies to redress the grievances of relatives of victims.

The End of Silence is the story of what happens when a country tries to amputate its painful past. It is also the uplifting story of what happens when a country courageously accepts the burden of truth to start the process of national healing and reconciliation.

Neither Here Nor There is a moving portrayal of the struggles of the Selimovic family from Srebrenica, Bosnia, who resettled inMissouri after the worst single act of genocide in Europe since the end of World War II. The film traces the difficulties refugees have starting over in America, and how ties to the past remain animportant, unbreakable part of their lives, especially for war refugees.More than 8,000 men and teenage boys were murdered in Srebreni-ca in 1995. Many from the small town made the painful decisionto seek refugee status in other countries as “ethnic cleansing” con-tinued unabated. Missouri has become home to the largest Bosnian population outside of their homeland. Having survived the mass execution of their family and friends, the Bosnian refugees find themselves struggling to make a new life in America’s heartland. The past comes back to haunt the family when they learn that DNA testing identified their father in a mass grave. The film follows the Selimovics on their first trip back to their homeland to a mass funeral in Srebrenica and to reunite with other family. Sometimesa refugee’s home is neither here nor there. It’s somewherein-between. (Note: The film includes harrowing footage from the war, including recently discovered video proving mass executions.)

Featuring both a documentary film and other educational resources, this interactive DVD provides a comprehensive introduction toforest management, scientific inquiry, ecosystem functions,species interdependence and more. The film documents a ten-year collaboration of forest managers and scientists from diverse disciplines that investigated the effects of prescribed fire and forest thinning on restoring forest health. A century of fire suppression has significantly changed many western forests, leaving themsusceptible to disease, pests, and catastrophic fires. Expertsagree that reducing fuel loads in our forests lessens the chances of devastation, but until the Teakettle Experiment, deciding which method for doing so remained controversial.

The principal feature on the DVD is the film, “Fire and Forest Health,” which outlines the problems in our forests and reveals how the multi-disciplinary experiment was conducted. In addition, the DVD includes five short videos, reference materials, instructional guides, and website links. The subjects of the short videos are:

• Small mammals and forest ecology• Climate change and forest management• Science and forest management• Pest, pathogens and drought• Forest restoration

River of Renewal chronicles a long and bitter conflict over natural resources that culminated in a surprising consensus among competing interests. The result will likely be the largest dam removal project in U.S. history and the most ambitious habitat restoration project ever for a federallyprotected species. In the 10 million acre Klamath River Basin, competing demands for water, food, and energy have pitted farmers, American Indians, utility compa-nies and fishermen against each other for decades. Remarkably, this conflict led to a consensus for conservation in this vast basin, once North America’s third greatest salmon-producing river. Recognizing that their livelihoods all depend on the healthof the river, stakeholders agreed to share the water and to demand the removal of four dams.

The film profiles one of the great rivers of America in crisis while also telling the story of a “sidewalk Indian”, Jack Kohler, who discovers his roots among the Klamath River tribes and uncovers the elemental bond between California native tribesand the river.

How can America truly end its dependence on fossil fuels and transition to green power? Power Paths is an inspiringdocumentary profiling Native American communities across the West who are leading the transition to alternativeenergy sources. Ten percent of America’s energy comes from Native American lands, including a third of the U.S. coal deposits and hydroelectric dams that feed the grid. These coal mines and plants brought jobs to the region, but they also brought pollu-tion, cancer and environmental destruction.

Power Paths chronicles the efforts ofseveral tribes as they fight to end the harm-ful use of coal and work to bring clean, renewable energy projects into their com-munities, including wind and solar power. As the film reveals, many tribes are not waiting for the government to act. Instead, they are actively seeking investors and a way to control their own energy. Power Paths signals cause for hope that analternative is not somewhere in the future, but possible right now.

Fighting Goliath: Texas Coal Warsfollows an unlikely partnership of Texans fighting a high stakes battle against the construction of 19 coal-fired power plants planned in Eastern and Central Texas. The film documents how pressure from this unusual coalition changed public opinion throughout the state of Texas and won a major reduction in the number of plants to be built. The eye-opening story centers on the leadership of 17 Texas mayors and the varied partners who came together to oppose the coal plants, setting a national example for other communities.

The film frames the energy challenge of powering communities in a way that supports the local economy and protects public health. At the same time it makes a statement about what can be done to pro-tect public health and fight global warming when community members, business lead-ers, and policymakers come together.

The world’s economy, and our standard of living, currently relies on the availability of oil. But is oil beginning to run out? Are we heading to an energy emergency of cata-strophic proportions? Shot over four years in 13 countries this film uncovers the mythsand facts surrounding the future of worldoil supplies. It includes interviews withover 30 of the most influential people on both sides, examining whether the oil age is coming to an end, and if so, what wecan do about it.

The producers travel to the Middle East to find out how much oil is actually there, exposing evidence that the oil producers may be exaggerating what remains. We also meet powerful experts who tell us there is no problem because technology can save us. Traveling from the North Sea to Pennsylvania to Brazil the film exam-ines the validity of these optimistic views. PetroApocalypse Now? also looks back to the 70’s, when we were first warned about the possibility oil supplies may run low, and looks ahead to whether we have a way out of the potential mess we may be in.

The Future of Food offers an in-depth investigation into the controversies over seed patenting and genetically engineered foods, which have quietly made their way onto U.S. grocery store shelves over the past decade. The film uses animation to explain the process of recombinant DNA technology which allows “geneticengineering”, the movement of DNAfrom one species to another. The legal foundations for and consequences ofpatenting life are explored in depth. The health implications, government policies and push towards globalization are presented as some of the reasons why many people are alarmed by the takeover of our food supply by corporations and their genetically engineered crops.

With humor and compassion, Mama Earth provides an upbeat introduction to the concepts of sustainability and a moreenvironmentally sound economy thatvalues healthier communities andprotecting natural resources.

The film shows how conventional econom-ics encourages exploitation of our natural resources, ignoring the value of critical goods and services like clean air and water, fertile soil, and other natural assets. We hear from economists who propose a new model that puts a hard currency value on our “Natural Capital”, the virgin resources being harvested from the earth, and impose a value on the burden of squandering these resources in the forms of waste, byproduct and pollution. We also visit with companies that are proving that it is possible to be environmentally friendly and quite profit-able. Mama Earth dispels the myth that being eco-friendly is merely an altruistic endeavor; rather, it is the way of the future for businesses and our economy.

Scarred Lands is a compelling documen-tary exploring the under-reported environ-mental impacts of war. Featuring a rangeof scientists, veterans and other experts, the film examines the immensely broad ecological ramifications of war, from tech-nological development and naturalresource exhaustion to weapons testing and the impact of modern warfare itself. In all its stages, from the production of weapons through combat to cleanup and restoration, war is comprised of elements that pollute land, air, and water, destroy biodiversity and entire ecosystems, and drain our limited natural resources. Yet the environmental damage occasioned by preparation for war, not to mention war itself, is routinely underestimated,underreported, and even ignored. Finding the Words follows the stories of eight children in their struggle to recover from autistic spectrum disorder (ASD). An estimated 1 in 150 children are beingdiagnosed with this serious medicalcondition that the American Academyof Pediatrics now considers “epidemic” In Finding the Words, parents of children once considered hopeless describe the amazing journeys they’ve taken to bring their sons and daughters back – fighting the prevailing view of autism as a disorder that is “incurable and untreatable”. Children who could not speak, who could not make eye contact, who spun and flapped and looked so utterly lost and unreachable, are now cogent and happy and communicable, “indistinguishable from their peers”.

The film also captures the unfolding drama of scientific discovery as doctors, pushed along by relentless parents, search for answers. We see a paradigm shift in the doctor / patient model, and a great example of how treatments can be discovered in the presence of urgent need.
