We were excited to celebrate the graduation of our February 2013 students at St Giles Church. It was a phenomenal day, seeing the students’ hard work pay off. They all celebrated the special day with their loved ones.

Professor Khan gave a passionate, motivating speech during the graduation ceremony, telling students and staff to continue striving for success no matter the obstacle. He also reminded students that with their new degree, the sky is the limit. We also celebrated outstanding results by giving out awards. Technology student Roman Cerny graduated with 15 distinctions, and won the Principal’s Award for Outstanding Academic Achievement. He identified a specific need in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) by noting that its capital, Kinshasa, has no transport infrastructure: people rely on taxis. Roman’s HND project proposal was for a web-based taxi service for Kinshasa, which was described by the assessor as ‘very impressive and innovative’.

As part of St Patricks’ Fresh Futures initiative, we recently welcomed special guest Charilaos Athanasopoulos from Double Tree by Hilton Hotel to give a talk to our hospitality students.

Mr Athanasopoulos challenged the students’ knowledge of the industry and how hotels become successful. His talk was followed by a question and answer session. His inspiring words of ‘if I can do it, you can do it’ and ‘dream a big dream’ motivated students and got their minds buzzing. The talk most definitely reflected the ethos of Fresh Futures: ‘aspiring to inspire’. It was a great success, and we look forward to the next talk.

NO DREAM IS TOO BIG THE VIBE

12

We live in a world that shows a limited amount to what we can do. However, many do not realise that life does not make us: life is what we make it. We have the ability to determine how far we want to go. As children, there was no such thing as having a dream that was too big: if you wanted to go to the moon, you could go to the moon. Every crazy dream was encouraged, just as much as the last one. Any person you told about your thought of going to the moon would say: “You can be whatever you want to be, and do what you set your mind to.” But as we get older, these possibilities seem to become less available to us. Is it because we no longer have the tenderness of a child? Or is

it that like a child outgrows their toys, we too should outgrow dreaming?

I don’t know about you, but I’d go back to my childhood if it meant I could be whatever I wanted to be and do what I set my mind to.

Maybe life as we know it isn’t the way it should be. There are unlimited possibilities around every corner, and they should be grabbed, not feared. It’s that first step that can take you from where you are to where you want to be. Step outside of the box that the world put you in, and explore a new world that is defined by your aspirations. Because no dream is too big.

FASHION

Fashion students from St Patrick’s College recently took over Stratford Circus Arts Centre for a fashion show. Their designs combined Asian, African, Caribbean, Japanese and European culture with sharp modern style and craftsmanship.

The fashion show was attended by over 200 guests and featured 55 looks, including gowns, party dresses and dramatic theatrical pieces, as well as suits and modern daywear for men and women. Over 60 HND and degree student designers, models, and make-up artists took part. The show was choreographed and compered by fashion presenter Emma-Louise Maw. It gave the

graduating designers, their guests, families, friends, and other students from St Patrick’s the chance to celebrate the creativity of the fashion school. Students were also able to network with invited fashion professionals.

The designers of the night definitely showed they have what it takes to be part of the fashion world.

18LAW STUDENT RECEIVES VICE CHANCELLOR SCHOLARSH IP AWARD

Arlene has expressed that this may not have been possible without the hard work and support of her lecturers at St Patrick’s. She said: “Due to your never ending support and encouragement with my studies, application to university, and my subsequent interest to apply for a scholarship, I have won the Vice Chancellor’s scholarship award.” In order to qualify, she had to demonstrate her commitment to the community. Arlene put forward her social enterprise, Young People’s Project, an advocate service for people from disadvantaged backgrounds who have been affected by domestic violence.

The project has collaborated with the London Borough of Lewisham to work with young people from a variety of ethnic backgrounds between the ages of 14 and 16, educating

them on the law. It provides visits to the magistrate’s court and the Old Bailey, allowing young people to sit in on various cases to improve their understanding of the law system. Magistrates were so impressed with the initiative that they have offered to come and talk with the young people in the future.

Arlene is expected to graduate from St Patrick’s this July with a full HND in Law, starting her degree in Law at UEL in September 2015. She would like to thank St Patrick’s and all of her lecturers, Stephen Airey, Kareesha Maitaram, Uriah Bajela, Christopher Ojoko, and Margarita Dimitrova for their support throughout the course.

We congratulate Arlene on her achievement and wish her the best in all her aspirations.

THE INAUGURAL FA CUP THE VIBE

21

The St Patrick’s ‘Green Machine’ football team, Patrick’s Players, recently competed in the inaugural FA People’s Cup. The Football Association (FA) organised the tournament in order to integrate as many communities as possible. It attracted hundreds of 5-a-side football teams, each hoping for the opportunity of going all the way to Wembley for the FA Cup final. St Patrick’s Players only spent a week preparing for their first match, but still managed to surprise many by qualifying second in their group and playing in a closely contested quarter final which was decided with extra time. All the players showed great spirit and have vowed to come back next year, bigger, better, and bolder.
