The seventh annual Festival ofSquash organised by the GB Vetswas held at the RAC, WoodcotePark, Epsom on Sunday 3rdNovember.

By 9.30 a.m. groups of keen players, with ages spanning from 25 to 85,representing the GB Vets, the Armyand the Escorts, began arriving to jointhe players from the host RAC team.

The Army team was somewhat downon numbers given the absence of Philand Yvette Ashman. The former hasleft the Army but has taken on the jobof running the Army’s overall sports-so squash is now only one of hissports… However, in the spirit of theFestival of Squash, the GB Vets loanedNick Sheppard for the Singles, and(Lt. Col) John Woodliffe andLance Kinder for the Doubles! Johnand Lance won one of their twomatches with a large gallery impressedby the amazing staying power of a pairnow aggregating over 168 years!!

Richard Green and Len Westover(The Army) were the overall stars inthe Singles, winning all three of theirmatches. In the Doubles, MandyAkin and Karen Hume (GB Vets)won all three of their matches, whilstAlan Thomson and Dave Clarkeplayed four matches and won them all!Mike Stewart and Karl Newland(RAC) won two of their Doublesmatches whilst James Dubois (RAC)won three of his Singles matches…although he essentially played NickSheppard twice- with Nickrepresenting both GB Vets and theArmy in the same match! That reallyis the spirit of the event! Shayne Baillie

with the Army turning the tables onthe 2018 winners GB Vets by justFOUR points:

The Army: 60GB Vets: 56R.A.C: 43Escorts: 21Shortly after the final matchesfinished, hot and cold canapés, wereserved with wine for both players andthe guests who came to support theirteams. Finally, the GB VetsChairman,Tom Hendry, thankedJames Dubois and the RAC fortheir generosity in making it possiblefor the event to take place in such finesurroundings. Tom then thanked Janeand Di for their hard workorchestrating the matches for the fourcourts throughout the day. He alsothanked Berge Kay (Escorts), PhilCroager (The Army), Nigel Belle(GB Vets) and James Dubois (RAC)for assembling their players andcongratulated everyone for bothturning out and exemplifying the spiritof the event - that participationwas much more important thanthe result!

The Festival of Squash Trophy for2019 was then presented to PhilCroager. Finally, Phil thanked hisplayers, opponents and the organisersfor another great event and spoke forall present, stating that they could notwait for the next festival when we cancelebrate our great sport.

See you all on Sunday November1st 2020. Put it in your diary!

Tom Hendry, Chairman, GB Vets.

(RAC) had a fine day, narrowly losingto Richard Green whilst winning herother two matches. Dean Newberry(GB Vets) and John Goodrich (GBVets) again performed strongly withboth winning two of their Singlesmatches, whilst Jeremy Wilcox(Escorts) did likewise.

However, perhaps the tour-de-forcefor the day was Rick Prior (Escorts)who played four Doubles and twoSingles for the Escorts scoring 9points!

Over the whole of the day, 86 gameswere played in the 24 Singles matches, and 64 games in the 18 Doublesmatches.

The result of the overall competitionwent down to the wire with largegalleries watching the final matcheswhich proved to be key to the finalpositions.

After the splendid Jane Belle and DiHendry, who had managed thetimetable through the day, hadreckoned up all the points, the resultshowed another close competition

BUS TOURGroups of Americans were travelling by tour bus through Switzerland. As they stopped at acheese farm, a young guide led them through the process of cheese making, explaining thatgoat’s milk was used. She showed the group a lovely hillside where many goats were grazing.

“These,” she explained, “ are the older goats put out to pasture when they no longer produce.”

She then asked, “ What do you do in America with your old goats?”

A spry old gentleman answered, “ They send us on bus tours!”

It is an especial pleasure to report the progress thatour Club has made in 2019.Our membership hasshown a net increase during the year and now sitsat well over 500, which has remained pretty stableover the last 5 years or so.

In February it was the turn of the GB Vets to travelto Ireland for the annual fixture with the Dublinbased Fitzwilliam Club with Steve Jacksonleading our team.

However, we have to fast-forward to October andNovember to celebrate a substantial leap forwardin our friendly activities. On the final weekend ofOctober, we were able to turn out over thirty ofour members to fulfil two events - in York andCambridge.

Friday and Saturday 26-27th of October saw a much-enjoyedreturn for a York weekend organised by Adrian Wright after ayear off in 2018. On Saturday 27th. October also saw the launchof a new GB Vets event in Cambridge- against the full force of theCambridge University Squash Club- including the best of theUniversity’s men and women. This was organised by ourtenacious Fixtures Manager, Nick Sheppard who, aftergrappling with several possible dates, ensured that this finally tookplace in the superb University Sports Centre with over 15 per side! Our feedback from the Cambridge organisers was very positiveand we have agreed that this will become an annual event. Nick

has also arranged an equivalent event withOxford University Squash Club next spring. Youcan see the full reports of both matches in thisNewsletter.

Moving back home, many of our memberscontinue to excel in Regional, National andInternational Masters (including the 2019 BritishNational Masters) events. All these details arerecorded in Nigel’s splendid Club Newsletters.

You might remember that, at our last AGM, Iannounced that I would give up the Chairman’srole of the GB Vets Club after the 2020 AGMwhen Di will also resign as Treasurer. I ampleased to report that Robert Smith hasvolunteered to take over the role of the GB Vets

Treasurer after the 2020 AGM.

However, so far, no one has come forward to take over from me!I have been on the GB Vets Committees for 21 out of the last 27years- including 13 years as Hon. Secretary, and 6 years as yourChairman. There must be someone out there that is both youngerand more accomplished than me. Please come forward!!

We have seen very positive signs of our Club moving forward.Let’s ensure that our Club continues to flourish. In the meantime, thanks for all your continued support.

GB VETS TOUR TO YORK25-27 OCTOBER

This year’s tour was scheduled to coincidewith the Wigginton Club 40th AnniversaryDinner held at the York Race Course.

Unfortunately, from a starting line-up of 23or so, we finished up with 3 old hands, whoknow what a good weekend it usually is, andfortunately Allen Barwise and PollyWoodward who showed extremeenthusiasm from the start. Without these 2 itis unlikely that tour would have gone ahead. The weekend was dampened slightly due tothe atrocious weather on the Saturday.

I intend starting the story at the end ratherthan the beginning, because the last matchon Saturday afternoon proved to be thedeciding battle as whether we becameoutright winners or not. Possibly having toresort to a countback. Having won 3-2 onFriday night, The Friday Night’s winnerswere losers and the losers, Winners, so theLast Saturday tie was at 2 all With NickClifford scheduled to play Martin Wright. On Martin’s first appearance at the Yorkvenue he did lose to Nick when I had wonabout 5 years ago.

But when I do rarely get the chance play myson these days there is usually only onewinner, and I had confidently stated to amember of the opposition that I felt thatMartin would be too strong and we wouldwin. I was later forced to eat my words.Having lost myself on Friday night to Nick, for the first time I did not give Nick enoughcredit. Apparently out for 12 months andonly having had 3 games since, we perhapsunderestimated him. His game with Martinproved to be the game of the weekend.Losing the 1st drastically being well down,Martin then recovered but lost 11/9 .Hethen took the next 2 only 2 lose the 4th andleft the tie hanging in the balance. Nick hadbeaten me with some superb lob serves, never far away from being perfect. AndMartin had the same trouble, but in the endhe just had the edge to finish off a crackinggame, many of whom thought was the bestof the weekend.

victory. I again missed Tommy’s game to amuch younger player to whom he lost 3-0and I managed to reverse my Friday defeatbeating Mike 3-0. Which left Martin to bringus home winning both days 3-2.

Nick did a splendid job matching up theplayers as well as organising the weekend. Ithink it was Rob Cooper and his wife whoprepared the Friday meal of Chilli and ricefinishing off with 2 superb sweets. I selectedthe barrel of beer for the night “YorkshireTerrier” – This had gone by time we gotback to the club on Saturday for a pre-dinnerdrink – had to make do with Guinness. Thefirst time a barrel had disappeared in a day Iwas told. A preamble by Nick Clifford to theassembled 140 dinner guests, in which theGB Vets got a mention, was followed by 2buses operating to the Race Course for theAnnual Dinner Celebration.

There were numerous raffles and speeches, all proceeds going to local charities, one ofwhich was to Parkinson’s disease.Appropriate as Nick’s wife Shelia hasrecently been diagnosed with it. In private onbehalf of the GB Vets I passed on oursympathy and best wishes for whichinevitably will be a strain on both of them.My wife’s sister had it for nearly 30 yearsbefore passing away last year unable tospeak, walk and bent over like a hunchbackin the end. An awful disease. The dinnerdance went well and dancing by some, allowed the joys of relative youth to flourish.Personally, I could not stand the noise andshowed my age by moving to the back of room.

Allen Barwise and Polly enjoyed the event somuch he felt a desire to express his ownthanks and on behalf of the GB Vets as partof the speeches. I have expressed my wishand now confirm my desire to stand downfrom my duties in respect of this tour andhope that I have primed Allen to take over.

One suggestion was not to overkill the eventby making it bi-annual.

Polly’s debut on Friday night got off to abrilliant start going 7 up in the first to a verystrong looking youngish Chris. Pollymanaged to hang on and win that game andhad some deft finishes to keep in the next 3but eventually lost.

Allen on at the same time took on another fitlooking and younger Angus. This was a veryclose game with some excellent squash byboth players Allen winning in the 5th

Tommy the Elf had 4 close games beforeedging out Mark. Martin had his first 5setter after going 2-1 up before winning the5th 11-7

With the pressure off, were winning 3-1. Myregular game with Nick was the end of thetie. A struggle in the 1st but then 2-1 up Imade the mistake of underestimating myopponent when he was finishing strongerand l Iost the 4th 12-10 which proved the endof me in the 5th. But still A 3-2 win for the vets.

On Saturday Allen came up first against thecurrent club champion. After losing 3-0Allen admitted that he never comes acrossanyone that could hit the ball so hard. Avery strong 40 year old who I thought mightdo well on the circuit. No disgrace for a 62year old to lose.

Polly had a lady to play for her match andshe reversed her defeat on Friday with a 3-0

On a fine late Summer afternoon, 11members of the Vets Club assembled at

Surbiton Golf Club for the 5th AnnualGolf day. Bacon rolls and coffee were

consumed to provide energy for the task ahead and we setoff to compete on one of the finest courses in Surrey. (Withapologies to members of Royal Wimbledon and RoyalMid Surrey).

Although we were competing as individuals there was alsoa secret team prize, to be drawn at the conclusion of theround. With Longest Drive, Nearest the Pin on 2 holesthere were prizes galore to play for.

Groups were chosen and off we set.

Some 4 hours later assembled back in the bar with a glassin our hand, the stories of the day were recounted. The lostballs, bad bounces, missed putts and the usual golfing “If only”.

A delicious meal of Chicken in redwine, with more redwine, was followed bythe presentation ofprizes. Being a smallgroup, there was an opportunity foreveryone to receive atleast one prize and soit proved.

Wine was won byNigel Belle for thelongest drive,David Johnson and Philip Ayton for nearest the pinsand the main winners, 4th John Galt, 3rd StuartHardy, 2nd Garry Williams and for the second time 1stwas Steve Jackson.

The draw was made for the teams and Garry Williamsand Derek Lyons had the greatest combined total. Nonames, but we had a wooden spoon prize and all otherparticipant also received a sleeve of balls.

We finally headed home, all agreeing to try and helpincrease the numbers for next year. So if you're a golferyou're welcome to join us in September 2020 (date to beconfirmed) then keep a lookout for the entry form whichwill be sent out in the spring.

It doesn’t seem a year ago that the GB Vets were pattingthemselves on the back for having secured their first victoryover Bromley Cricket Club in their annual doubles match.Unfortunately, the result this year was reversed, the Vets goingdown 2 matches to 6. This didn’t deter the team from enjoyingthemselves and thanks must go to BCC for another enjoyableevening, despite having to decamp to a local hostelry, namelythe Crown & Anchor, as a youngster’s 40th birthday partytook precedence in the bar at the clubhouse!

OBITUARIESIt is with much sadness we report the following have gone to thegreat squash club in the sky:

Sir Michael Edwardes.Sir Michael died on September 15th 2019 atthe age of 88 having been a member of theGB Vets since 1980. On the business side hewill be remembered as being thepugnacious Chairman of British Leyland inthe late 1970’s. On the squash front he willbe remembered for many reasons. Hisenthusiasm for Doubles Squash wasexemplified by inventing and designing (with the help of hisDoubles partner Toddy Berman) the Doubles courts that weknow today. They are a great success, encouraging a huge surgeof new players being introduced to the game. In 1984 he andToddy presented the ‘Edwardes & Berman Doubles’ Trophy tothe Club. His achievements included winning the ‘WarlinghamDecanters’ trophy in 1987, The Birch Trophy in 1996, withpartner Toddy and the Leo Melville trophy in 2001, with partnerFrank Crowley. He was also Chairman of our Club for manyyears and was awarded the Burrell trophy in 2010. Manymembers benefited from his generous hospitality, especially at hishome in South Africa (where he built 2 doubles courts) and theRAC. Michael will be sorely missed both on and off court andour sincere condolences go to his wife Sheila and his family.Keith SpurgeonKeith died in March this year. Although tennis was his maingame (he holds the all-time record of 53 trophies for tennis inKent) Keith was a keen player and supporter of the GB Vetshaving joined in 1986.

John RaeJohn joined the GB Vets in 2016 and was our Scottishrepresentative. He was a talented player and won a number ofRegional Tournaments. He was competitive, social and althoughhad been ill for a long time always had a smile on his face. Hedied in October with his family by his bedside. As JonathanGliddon, Chairman of England Squash Masters, remarked ‘Notjust a good guy – but one of the best.
