The President’s Message September 2018

Can’t believe it is September already. Where did this year go? The dog days of

summer are over, and the days are getting shorter.

I would like to thank everyone that gave me an impromptu bath at the family picnic

this year. The weather cooperated, and the food was great. Once again thanks to the

cooks, and all those that helped make it a great day.

If you went to Blackdog Speed Shops’s grand opening, you saw an amazing place.

The place is huge, and seems to have everything it needs to modify any car you own.

A few upcoming events include, among others, our monthly membership meeting, 1 day

autocross, and the fall color run in Wisconsin.

And now for the ongoing saga of my Corvette. I fixed the electronic gremlin on the

Grand Sport. A new battery fixed the problem. However the newest twist, is a rear

tire that loses way too much air. Easy fix there also. Found a nail, I need to get it

to a shop and buy new rear tires. Went to 4 tire

dealers to get price quotes. A root canal is less

painful, I believe. Can’t compare apples to

apples. One shop includes the alignment, the next

doesn’t.

Eric K

The ‘81 is still in storage. More next

month.

Gayle and Ron Althardt’s

Garden Railroad Open House 15902 Woodbine Circle

Vernon Hills, Il 60061

847-634-0637

Date: Sunday, September 16, 2018

Time: 1:00 – 5:00pm

PLEASE NOTE:

1. OUR BACKYARD IS NOT HANDICAP ACCESSIBLE FOR WHEEL CHAIRS, WALKERS, ETC. THE WALKING PATHS ARE UNEVEN AND IT MAY BE DIFFICULT FOR SOME TO WALK.

2. CHILDREN MUST BE SUPERVISED AT ALL TIMES!!!

We welcome you to our home and Garden Railroad. As you enter the “G & R Railroad”, you will be greeted by “Smokey” our carved black bear from Colorado. Just to Smokey’s right, you encounter our whimsical Disney and Circus village, outfitted with many of our friends and features from Disney World as well a Ferris wheel and Cir-cus Tent. Mickey would be proud! As you continue through the layout you will see a number of different villages and period settings surrounded by ponds and waterfalls.

The railroad was started in 1999 as a small loop around the choke cherry tree (Now the Crow’s Nest). Then we had the pleasure of meeting Bill Valkner and needless to say, our Garden Railroad expanded! Thanks to Bill ’s inspi-ration, creativity, expertise and deep friendship, our yard was transformed into a Garden Railroader ’s dream come true.

The yard and water features were constructed using approximately 180 tons of rock and moves over 40,000 gal-lons of water per hour. These water features provide an interesting backdrop to the settings throughout the yard. You’ll also note that there are many annuals with a vast array of perennials that create this unique garden.

The railroad operates with nine miles of scale track, twelve (12) running G-Scale model trains. The Santa Fe Chief Passenger train (a special section of the Super Chief) circles the perimeter of the back yard, while a long freight train makes its way over bridges crossing the large waterfall moving towards a massive boulder fountain. As the train continues its trek, it moves through a tunnel directly behind the Fairy Castle. Some of the other areas in-clude farm houses, barns, and even a saw mill, just to name a few.

As you continue, you won’t want to miss the Indian Village, complete with Teepees, cowboys, and a working geyser.

Our latest addition to the layout is the Big Boy loop with the Coaling Tower and the Hudson pulling the “20th Cen-tury Ltd.” There is also a coal mine, diamond mine (for Gayle) as this continues to be a work in progress.

As you stroll through the layout, don’t forget to look for all of the different animals we have tucked away. They include moose, bears, raccoons, and even a walrus to mention just a few.

We hope you will enjoy our Garden Railroad as much as we do.

Thank you to all of you that came out to support our veterans and escort them from North Chicago’s City Hall to Milwaukee’s General Mitchell International airport. NSCC’s efforts for Lake County Honor Flight is still continuing to grow with every flight. The veterans certainly deserve our support. On Saturday morning, August 11, 2018, we had 9 members in 6 Corvettes show up in North Chicago by 3:45 in the morning. The NSCC drivers were joined by over 100 motorcycles, and many from law enforcement, to escort the veterans, guardians and LCHF staff to Milwaukee’s airport. From the time we left North Chicago to when we entered the airport, we did not stop for any stop signs or traffic lights. We did get stopped by a freight train in Waukegan before we got to the highway, though. The police can only stop so much traffic. They don’t have jurisdiction over trains. After the veterans were on their way, we left the airport and all had a nice breakfast at Oak Creek Diner.

It’s quite an experience. I encourage anyone, veteran or not, to join us in the future. Brett and Pam Bacci have volunteered to be Honor Flight guardians for the October, 2019 flight next year.

It was a nice afternoon to spend with

friends; some old, some new. Not too hot

and no rain. Thanks to Debbie and Tom

for once again organizing this event

and everyone that helped along the way.

There was plenty of food to go around.

Our chefs for the day, Frank and Jerry

(pictured, below), made sure that the

grills were hot, ready to cook and stocked

with burgers, dogs and brats. Rick wasn't there this year to make his beer

brats, but the guys did just fine.

Thirty eight members signed up for the picnic, but only about thirty

showed up. In the future, please let the organizers know at least two days

ahead of time if you signed up and will not be attending. The club pays

for the grilling meat, etc. and the quantity that is purchased is based on

the number that signed up.

Everyone seemed to have a good time. Some tables were talking about

their current Corvettes, past Corvettes, other cars and travels. Several

of us were a bit tired having gotten up early that day to do the Lake

County Honor Flight escort in the morning.

Towards the end of the evening, we started playing

a friendly game of water balloon toss. Everything

was going fine. There were a few broken balloons,

some damp clothes, no big deal. Then, as if it was

planned, somehow the balloons started heading

toward Eric. One minute he was dry, the next he

was very, very wet (pictured, to the right). I don't

know how that happened! He was a good sport,

though, taking it all in stride. Maybe it had

something to do with him being our new

president?

There were several raffle prizes and one lucky lady was the big winner.

All in all, everyone enjoyed themselves. See you next year.

Three Corvettes; Jim Barnich, Sue Radder and Daryl Ullberg met at the

Kenosha visitors center on Sunday, August 12, 2018. From there, we drove

together to Milwaukee’s airport to greet the veterans. At the airport, we

saw many familiar faces. There were motorcycle riders and those in law

enforcement that we’ve seen from the day before or from prior rides. Only

60-80 motorcycles participated, which seemed low for such a nice day.

I was given a GoPro camera to mount on my car for the drive from

Milwaukee to North Chicago. Click on the

picture to the right to view the video from the

front of the bus and from my car (at 01:35).

Even with all of the construction on I-94, the

ride from Milwaukee to North Chicago was

uneventful. While driving through the

construction zones most of the traffic was

stopped in the right lane and we kept on

moving in the left lane.

During the Welcome Home ceremony, there were many speakers; Illinois

State Senator Terry Link, Congressman Brad Schneider, North Chicago

Mayor Leon Rockingham Jr., North Chicago

police chief Lazaro Perez, Medal of Honor

recipient Allen J. Lynch, Naval Station Great

Lakes Commanding Officer Raymond Leung,

Mayor of Lindenhurst Dominic Marturano and

many others.

Two of the veterans on Flight #13 were a married couple, see picture,

below. They are also a gold star family. Their son lost his life in

Afghanistan due to an IED that his Humvee drove over. While at Arlington

National Cemetery, they were able to visit their son's grave. The couple

were also granted the honor of assisting with the laying of wreath at the

Tomb Of The Unknown.

As each veteran had a turn to speak, they had nothing but high praise of

their experience with Lake County Honor Flight's staff. All of their travels

were positive, except for the last leg of their journey when the air

conditioner failed to perform on the bus from Milwaukee to North Chicago.

Let's hope that was a one-time incident. One veteran did need medical

attention on the bus upon arrival, due to the heat. He did recover in time to

participate in the Welcome Home Ceremony.

Hope to see more of you in October for the next escort. Also, we will be

joined by members from Sunburst Corvette Club.

Drag Racing

Saturday August 25, 2018

Byron, Illinois

The Friday night storms didn’t cancel the drag racing event but sure made it

a “drag” waiting for the crew to dry out the track. Our nine club members

waited until 3PM to finally get on the track to do some runs, after waiting for

about 5 to 6 hours of track prep.

Tom Arvidson, Debbie Monnier,

Wilbur Buckle, Larry Latko had to

leave after completing one run,

due to other obligations later in

the day. Pam Bacci and I stayed

and did another three fun runs

and a final race of which Pam

beat Frank for first place. Brett Bacci, Pam Buckle and Glen Blum were on

hand cheering and waiting and waiting. The weather did cooperate, but did

get hot and humid. It’s a shame that the event didn’t turn out as past drag

racing events, but you can’t change the weather and sure made it a real

“drag”.

10th Annual Meadowdale, Motorsports and Memories

Car Show

Saturday September 8, 2018 The overcast skies and cool temps did not stop the car

community from sharing their vehicles at the annual car show on

a retired road race track. The old straightaway was filled for the

entire length with a variety of cars and trucks. The corvette

corner also was filled with over 40 corvettes. The NCRS was on

hand judging corvettes. Three members, Phil Klaesges, Jim

Kleinschmidt, Stan Kaczor and myself represented the North

Shore Corvette Club. The DJ provided great background music

and a food vender was on hand with beef sandwiches and hot

dogs. It was so nice to see a fantastic turn out, for this special car

show.

Compact, Mid-Size, or Corvette Z06? Hertz Now Renting Special-Edition Vette

AUGUST 14, 2018 AT 10:08 AM BY DAVEY G. JOHNSON (CAR AND DRIVER)

It’s likely that the most memorable car Hertz ever made available for the

great unwashed to rent was the Shelby GT350-H of 1966. In that era, we

described the extra-zoot Mustang as “a real guts sports car—with hair on

its chest all the way down to its navel.” Ford, which later owned Hertz

from 1987 to 2005, paid tribute to the original 1000 rentable GT350s in

2006–2007 and again in 2016 with the sorta-breathed-on GT-H,

celebrating the 40th and 50th anniversaries of the program, respectively.

But to celebrate its 100th anniversary as a going concern, Hertz turned to

another former owner,

General Motors, for a

vehicle endowed with

hair from its palms to its

toes: the 650-hp

Chevrolet Corvette Z06.
