Human beings don’t exist because we had enough drive and skill to create ourselves. Humanity was created by God out of the dust of the earth and made alive by the breath of God (the same word that means “breath” means “Spirit,” so we are given life by the Holy Spirit). It is easy to forget that we didn’t make ourselves. Look at what we’ve earned, what we’ve achieved, how far we’ve come. We can make a living, but we can’t make ourselves alive. God does that. We were dust, and now we’re alive. Hearing these words on Ash Wednesday is sobering and moving. Yet, it is a call for us to spend this season cultivating humility. Search your hearts each day. Where are we resisting dependence on God for our lives? Are we putting our faith in our financial resources? Our abilities? Our status? How are we engaging with other people? Do we “think of [ourselves] with sober judgment,” or do we “think more highly of [ourselves] than we ought?” (Romans 12:3). Seek humility this season and watch the joy of Easter flood your soul. From Dust You Shall Return: Reassess Your Priorities. We will die. It’s as tough for me to write as it is for any of us to hear. Our mortal lives will end, even as we have hope of eternal life and the resurrection of the body. Our bodies will one day fail, our efforts will one day cease, and all that we have acquired in this life will remain in the storehouse of earth. I’m not trying to depress you; these truths intend to alter the vision of our lives. Have you ever heard the little joke, “I’ve never seen a U-haul trailer on a hearse”? It’s a cute way of reminding us that what we earn and acquire on earth won’t go with us into the grave. Jesus says, “Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth…. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven…. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” (Matthew 6:19-21) Again, Jesus says, “…seek first his kingdom and his righteousness….” (Matthew 6:33) Let this reminder of your mortality call you to reassess your priorities. We don’t have all the time in the world. How can we best spend our time on earth? How can we experience greater union with God in our short time on earth? Let the urgency of our lives force you to wrestle with the ministry God calls you to. Who do you need to invite to know Jesus? How can you bring greater justice? How can you alleviate suffering? What can you do that will have an impact for the kingdom that lasts long after you’re gone? Root Out Sin from Your Lives. The words of Ash Wednesday come from Genesis 3:19 when God is expelling Adam from the Garden of Eden after the Fall. These words are a reminder of our sin. We are justified in Christ (in other words, we are saved). Yet, our response to Christ goes beyond accepting Him as our Savior. It continues in sanctification as we continue to cooperate with the Holy Spirit to grow in holiness. You know as well as I do that believers still sin. We have strongholds, patterns, addictions, and broken spots. Let the chorus of Ash Wednesday call us to a full season of searching our hearts for the sin that remains in our lives. Repent, cleanse your heart, and watch what God will do with a church full of people who are letting go of sin and fully embracing the holiness of God. To make Disciples for Christ Jesus through the power of the Holy Spirit with Ministry and love to

others, teaching the Holy Scriptures, preaching the gospel, loving and serving the Lord.

A Vision for Your Lenten Journey

“From dust you were made, from dust you shall return.” These words mark the beginning of Lent. The central words of Ash

Wednesday are more than a chorus for putting ashes on our foreheads. They offer us a vision of how we can experience this

season and prepare for a whole-hearted Easter celebration.

From Dust You Were Made: Seek Humility. We are not self-made people. Human beings don’t exist because we had enough

drive and skill to create ourselves. Humanity was created by God out of the dust of the earth and made alive by the breath of

God (the same word that means “breath” means “Spirit,” so we are given life by the Holy Spirit). It is easy to forget that we

didn’t make ourselves. Look at what we’ve earned, what we’ve achieved, how far we’ve come. We can make a living, but we

can’t make ourselves alive. God does that. We were dust, and now we’re alive. Hearing these words on Ash Wednesday is

sobering and moving. Yet, it is a call for us to spend this season cultivating humility. Search your hearts each day. Where are

we resisting dependence on God for our lives? Are we putting our faith in our financial resources? Our abilities? Our status?

How are we engaging with other people? Do we “think of [ourselves] with sober judgment,” or do we “think more highly of

[ourselves] than we ought?” (Romans 12:3). Seek humility this season and watch the joy of Easter flood your soul.

From Dust You Shall Return: Reassess Your Priorities. We will die. It’s as tough for me to write as it is for any of us to

hear. Our mortal lives will end, even as we have hope of eternal life and the resurrection of the body. Our bodies will one day

fail, our efforts will one day cease, and all that we have acquired in this life will remain in the storehouse of earth. I’m not trying

to depress you; these truths intend to alter the vision of our lives. Have you ever heard the little joke, “I’ve never seen a U-haul

trailer on a hearse”? It’s a cute way of reminding us that what we earn and acquire on earth won’t go with us into the grave.

Jesus says, “Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth…. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven…. For where

your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” (Matthew 6:19-21) Again, Jesus says, “…seek first his kingdom and his

righteousness….” (Matthew 6:33) Let this reminder of your mortality call you to reassess your priorities. We don’t have all the

time in the world. How can we best spend our time on earth? How can we experience greater union with God in our short time

on earth? Let the urgency of our lives force you to wrestle with the ministry God calls you to. Who do you need to invite to

know Jesus? How can you bring greater justice? How can you alleviate suffering? What can you do that will have an impact for

the kingdom that lasts long after you’re gone?

Root Out Sin from Your Lives. The words of Ash Wednesday come from Genesis 3:19 when God is expelling Adam from the

Garden of Eden after the Fall. These words are a reminder of our sin. We are justified in Christ (in other words, we are saved).

Yet, our response to Christ goes beyond accepting Him as our Savior. It continues in sanctification as we continue to cooperate

with the Holy Spirit to grow in holiness. You know as well as I do that believers still sin. We have strongholds, patterns,

addictions, and broken spots. Let the chorus of Ash Wednesday call us to a full season of searching our hearts for the sin that

remains in our lives. Repent, cleanse your heart, and watch what God will do with a church full of people who are letting go of

sin and fully embracing the holiness of God.

The back country is a wild, isolated place. It’s

unexplored territory that can be filled with danger, unforeseen obstacles, and dangerous encounters.

Despite the dangers, there’s a lot to learn in the back

country because we can unexpectedly find ourselves in wild and unexplored places in our lives. Have you

explored the back country of your soul? Are you in

unexplored and dangerous territory? In this Lenten series, we will follow Jesus towards the cross and

witness unexpected encounters in the back-country

places of life. Along the way, we will learn the deep

truths about God’s work in life’s back-country places.

Jackie Robinson was the first black ball player

to break into the major leagues.

“You’re going to take abuse you never

dreamed of,” said Branch Rickey, the owner of the Dodgers. “But if you’re willing, I’ll back you

all the way.”

It was tough for Jackie, and one day the abuse was painful. In view of everyone, PeeWee Reese

walked over and hugged him.

“That may have saved my career,” admitted

Jackie. “PeeWee made me feel that I belonged.” Make the people on your team feel that they

belong by living love. When someone loves you,

your battle is more than half won. The Bible says, “Love one another.”

Prayer: Posses us, heavenly Father, and

permeate us with Thy love. Inspire us to show

love, speak love and to live love in our religion

and our recreation, in our homes and on the

jobs: through Christ. Amen.
