If I Be Lifted Up
The Old Testament veil was lifted up to be hung on an old wooden beam.
Christ was lifted up to be hung on the old wooden cross.
Matthew 27:50-51
At the same time the shed blood of the Lamb was being sprinkled in the temple, in the Holy of Holies for the sins of the people-
Christ was on the cross shedding his blood for the sins of the world.
Not of Man’s Works, But of God’s
At the moment that Christ died, the veil was torn from top to bottom (not by man from below, but by God above).
Opening a new way for man to come to God to pay for man’s sins.
Not of Man’s Works, But of God’s
Christ was not killed, he graciously gave his life. The veil was not torn by man, but by God.
Door Opened
In the temple, before you could get to the veil, there was a door, that remained closed except during the time of sacrifice.
Door Opened
During the earthquake, the temple doors were ―mysteriously opened‖, the cemetery was ―damaged‖, and the Sanhedrin meeting place destroyed.
References: Jewish records (Yoma 39b), Josephus, and Tacitus.
Effect of These Events on Priests

Matthew 27:51
The Word of God says that at the very moment Christ died, the Veil of the Temple was ripped in two, symbolic of His death being our way to enter into His presence.
The Miracle of The Torn Veil
The Veil of the temple was made of "fine twined linen― which would have endured the severest strain.
The Miracle of The Torn Veil
No human hands could have torn that sacred covering; and it could not have been divided in the midst by any accidental cause; yet, on the instant when the holy person of Jesus was rent by death, the great veil which concealed the holiest of all was "rent in twain from the top to the bottom."
Hebrews 10:19-23
We can enter into the holiest by his blood.
By a new and living way (he lives)
―through the veil, that is to say ―his flesh‖
Three Veils To Holiest
Old Testament
1. The gate – any Jew to outer court
2. The door-priests only to inner court
3. The veil-high priest to holy of holies.
Jesus is all three:
He is The Gate, The Door and The Veil.
―Veil‖ Means Separator
Veil or vail means separator
―Your sins have separated between you and your God‖
Christ (the Veil) was lifted up between God and Man to pay for the sins of mankind.
Christ Takes Us Past The Veil
In the Old Testament, the shed blood of the perfect, innocent lamb, had to be taken past the veil, to atone for sins of man.
Today, the shed blood of Christ (the lamb of God that taketh away the sins of the world) atones for our sins.
The Veil Had Four Colors
White - Christ’s righteousness
Blue - Christ was caught up into the blue sky and promised to return the same way.
Scarlet - The color of his shed blood
Purple - The color of royalty for the King of Kings and Lord of Lords.
A New and Living Way
The veil torn top to bottom allows for all to enter who are called of God's grace, to approach the throne, and to commune with the Eternal One.
A New and Living Way
We therefore have "boldness to enter into the holiest by the blood Jesus."
We "enter by the blood of Jesus, by a new and living way, which he hath consecrated for us, through the veil, that is to say, his flesh.
Exodus 36:35

The Four Faces
According to the Zondervan Bible Dictionary, the early church taught that the four faces were the four gospels.
The Four Faces
Man
Luke Jesus the man
Lion Matthew
Jesus the lion of the tribe of Judah.
Ox
Mark Jesus the servant
Eagle John
Jesus ascended into heaven.
Four Beasts of Revelation 4:6-9
Lion, Calf (ox), Man, and Eagle
All saying ―Holy, Holy, Holy, Lord God Almighty
Four Beasts of Revelation 4:6-9
Go ye into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature. The gospel, of the Lion of the tribe of Judah, who became a man, took the form of a servant (ox), died was buried, and like an eagle, ascended into heaven.
Boldness To Enter In
It was not automatic, you could chose to enter or not to enter, but it took boldness.
Boldness To Enter In
Jesus says, whosoever will may come.
Jesus says, behold I stand at the door and knock, if any man here my voice and enter in, he shall be saved.
The Priest Washed Before Entering In To The Holy of Holies
When you hear the gospel, you are washed of water by the Word
When we repent and believe the gospel we are sanctified by the Spirit of His grace
The Priest Washed Before Entering In To The Holy of Holies
Therefore let us enter into the holiest.
Hearts sprinkled with blood, bodies washed with pure water—these are the ordained preparations for acceptable entrance.
Some Believed and Some Believed Not
History tells us that the Jews patched back the temple veil and sacrificed for 40 years. They didn’t get it.
When Jesus died on the cross, he said: ―It is finished.‖ No more annual sacrifices, no more entering into the Holy of Holies every year.
Some Believed and Some Believed Not
Jesus was the last sacrifice - once for all.
Some did not believe. Some went back to man’s works to save, patching the veil by good works.
