SGA elections are coming up soon, and many candidates have been spreading their campaigns.

Presidential candidate Rachel Wyers and vice presidential candidate Jeff Gill both claim that if they were elected, they will try to make South a wet campus.

Some areas on campus are already al-lowed to serve alcohol, such as the faculty club, the Mitchell Center and Stanky Field. Fraternities and sororities also get exemp-tions.

According to Vice President of Student Affairs Dr. John Smith, there would have to be a policy change to make South Ala-bama a wet campus.

In order to change the University poli-cy, SGA would have to make a recommen-dation to the president of the University, Gordon Moulton, and in turn, Moulton would have to approve that recommen-dation and then present it to the Board of Trustees.

Dr. Smith said that it is very unlikely the dry campus policy will change because the change would affect very few students.

As of March 29, over 77 percent of stu-dents living on campus are 20 and under,

according to Mike Havard, business man-ager of Housing and Residence Life.

This number fl uctuates daily because of students’ birthdays.

Dr. Smith also said that most of the be-havioral problems in the residence halls are alcohol-related. USAPD Chief Zeke Aull also echoed this statement.

“At different times we have the under-age drinking scene, but that is very rare, if ever, at the sporting events. Other places around campus we’ll encounter the under-age drinking. The law is 21 and we’re going to enforce that law,” Aull said.

If the policy were to change, Aull said the police department would have no trou-

ble keeping up with the changes.“I worked at LSU. It’s a wet campus,

and I moved to Centenary College (of Loui-siana), which is a dry campus. We’re going to adjust and adapt to whatever the rules are. It’s not a USAPD decision. It‘s what-ever is decided, and we’re going to make sure we keep everyone safe,” Aull said.

“If everybody could drink socially that would be one thing, but that’s not really the way it works.

“There’s people that tend to be drinking to get drunk and that’s where the problems come in – DUIs, vehicle accidents, there’s a whole lot of things that come into play when you change,” Aull said.

For the first time in the history of The Vanguard, we have devoted over 16 pages entirely to SGA content.

This election is rushed compared to pre-vious elections, with only one week of cam-paigning.

Surely students have been overwhelmed by Facebook updates, groups and event page invites.

There are fliers, sheet signs, and probably free muffins at a Jag Tran stop somewhere.

Don’t let the notifications and the flashy paint distract you from what’s at stake here.

SGA handles almost half a million dollars of your money. Every semester, if the student organization you’re involved in wants to buy shirts or go to a conference, you’re going to go through SGA.

Appealing a parking ticket? The person you elect as Chief Justice is going to be the judge of what you submit.

No other senator can fix a parking prob-lem or give you the right to have booze on campus. A flick of the wrist isn’t going to build a parking garage or bring back 400 Jag Bikes, and no officer or senator can decrease tuition.

Editorial: SGA elections are important, so is your voteby cassie fambro

Editor-in-ChiefThe person you elect as President is going

to speak for you to the people that do decide these things.

They are going to sit in countless meet-ings, send hundreds of emails and issue doz-ens of statements, all in your name.

That person will be the face on the front of this newspaper, and it will be represent-ing you.

The officers of SGA have a commitment to office hours and involvement in events on campus.

Senators are supposed to be attending your organization’s meetings and figuring out how to help their college.

You have every right to Facebook mes-sage them, email them, and show up at meetings on Mondays at 8 p.m. to make your voice heard.

Honestly, if you aren’t participating in the election and not making an effort, you don’t have any right to complain when something occurs that you don’t agree with.

When the merger of Mardi Gras and spring break 2014 was finalized. Not a single SGA representative was there. The meeting was rescheduled, and the SGA was invited again.

They didn’t show that time, either.Administrators have admittedly gotten

used to not hearing back from SGA officers this year, and that is reprehensible.

Some people take these positions to fill a resume and boost their image.

They join to benefit their own organiza-tions and further their own agendas.

Every year, people complain that there are too many SGA members of Greek affili-ation.

The Vanguard has specifically asked each candidate their affiliation this year, so you can see for yourself starting on page 4.

The reason SGA has so many Greek rep-resentatives each year is because the Greek organizations band together and vote.

There are 15,007 students at USA.Last year, 1,145 voted for president.1,178 voted for vice-president.Less than 1,000 for senators. The reason there are so many Greek peo-

ple on senate is because the Greek people are voting, and no one else is.

The fact of the matter is that apathy is the norm at USA until something like Jag Bikes, tuition, or calendar changes occur.

Then all of a sudden, students want to create Facebook groups in protest and show up at one SGA meeting.

The main reason we hear when we ask why people don’t vote in SGA elections is

that it doesn’t affect you.Undergraduate tuition is $246 an hour. The estimated fees for an undergradu-

ate taking 15 hours and including books and supplies is $7,250, according to the Office of Admissions.

In my freshman year, fall 2008, with a meal plan, dorm, fees and tuition for 15 hours, I paid $6,211.

That’s $1,000 more in four years. If you honestly believe who you elect

doesn’t affect you, you need to check your wallet or your parent’s bank account.

Tuition has increased over 20 percent since I started at USA.

Numerous construction projects have fin-ished, begun and been planned.

We’re growing.Elect an SGA that has the intellectual and

professional fortitude to speak for you. This election is entirely in your hands,

and only 1,200 students voting is pathetic.Vote, USA.Or don’t complain when SGA lets you

down, because you did nothing to hold them accountable.

Turn to page 4 and do your research. Notice any names missing? That means they didn’t care enough to try

to talk to you. Why would you vote for them?

Corrections:

Last week’s issue stated that the spring break and Mardi Gras holidays would be lumped into one break in the 2012-2013 school year.

This is incorrect. It is set to be in-corporated as such in the 2013-1014 school year. In spring of 2014, March is when Mardi Gras occurs.

The confusion came from an interpre-tation from the SGA, and the Academ-ic Calendar Committee cleared it up.

SGA did not have representation at the meeting, as discussed in the article last week.

We regret the error, and apologize for any confusion we may have caused before the issue was clarified to us.

We’ll have a nice but warm start to the school week with sunny skies and highs in the upper 80s on Monday with lows in the low 60s on Monday Night. Isolated thunderstorms will be present on Tuesday with partly cloudy skies and highs in the upper 80s. Lows will be in the low 60s. A cold front will approach the area on Wednesday in-creasing the chance for thunderstorms (some maybe strong). Highs will be in the low 80s with nighttime lows in the low 60s. The Cold front will move though the area on Thursday so thun-derstorms (some maybe strong) will be likely throughout the day, highs will be in the low 80s with low will be in the low 60s. Friday and the weekend will clear out but thunderstorms will still be possible for all three day with partly cloudy skies and highs in the low to mid 80s. Nighttime lows will be in the low to mid 60s.

Why are you running for this po-sition?

I am running for the position of SGA President because I would like to make im-mediate, campus-wide improvements and better the quality of the college experience for the student body. Hav-ing worked on SGA as

Chief Justice, I am qualified and ready to be the voice of the students and work to solve many of the problems (i.e. parking, safety, scheduling) that students face daily.

Is there a parking problem on cam-pus? Why or why not?

Parking is a major concern for students. While construction and attendance increase, the parking situation has remained unchanged. Stu-dents frequently have nowhere to park and are routinely handed tickets. I will work to remedy this problem by initiating parking lot construc-tion and rezoning many areas.

What would your first senate project be if you had $1000?

Troy Shephard: Running for President

SeniorBiomedical SciencesSigma Chi

I would encourage the Senate to speak with their constituents to identify the various pressing matters of the student body. By doing so, the stu-dents would be directly involved in the allocation of their money rather than having the SGA spend freely without any input.

Are you Greek? If so, state your affili-ation.

I am a Sigma Chi and have also been a mem-ber of other non-Greek organizations including Alpha Kappa Psi, AED, and the National Society of Leadership and Success.

What is wrong with SGA?The SGA has a habit of becoming stagnant

over the course of the year and routinely becomes less involved with the students. By practicing an open door policy and extending more opportuni-ties for all students to become involved, this can be overcome.

What is right with SGA?A main positive characteristic of SGA is the

potential it presents for all students, regardless of affiliation or class standing, to be directly involved and informed with the workings of the school. This allows the student body to direct the future of the University and to be a part of the great im-

provements which the school is experiencing.

Which is more important; being a stu-dent or an officer?

Since the main goal of attending college is to gain a degree, being a student must have priority over being an officer. However, being an officer provides great resources to become a more well-rounded college student.

How important is transparency in SGA on a scale of 1-10?

10

Why is transparency important to you or not?

A successful SGA is one that efficiently and quickly addresses the issues of the student body. This is best done by keeping the students in-formed and updated on all SGA proceedings.

What is your favorite thing about USA?

My favorite aspect of USA is the rapid ex-pansion and improvements which have taken place over the last few years. With the inclusion of a football team and new construction, South is becoming a major University throughout the region.

What is your least favorite thing about

USA?My least favorite thing about USA is the

perception that the University is merely a com-muter school. While this view is changing, the “commuter” title is becoming outdated as South continues to improve.

Parker Chastain: Running for SGA PresidentWhy are you

running for this position?

I am running for this position because I not only want to re-ceive an education from the University of South Alabama, but I want to leave it better than when I came. We are entering the 50th

year as a University and I believe my dedication and work ethic make me a good choice to lead the student body into this new era.

Is there a parking problem on cam-pus? Why or why not?

Yes, I do believe there is a parking problem at South. However, I do not think that moving zones around or making freshman not have a vehicle is the answer. South is currently expe-riencing growing pains as more and more stu-dents attend the university, and we are simply running out of spots. I hope with the comple-tion of the current building projects that ad-ministration will listen to the student body and rectify the situation.

What would your first senate project be if you had $1000?

No, I am not a member of a Greek organiza-tion.

Are you Greek? If so, state your affili-ation.

I believe that work ethic and dedication are issues with SGA. In my time as senator I have seen many spots open and be filled only to be open again in the future. Also, I believe that not all members are focused on the picture as a whole, but merely on individual aspects that are desirable about being a member of SGA.

What is wrong with the sga?SGA has a great foundation to build on each

year, and uses resources well. The University of South Alabama has a unique system of appro-priations, co-sponsorships, and senate projects. Many other leading universities do not yield such great access to the SGA or the student body, and this is one of SGA’s greatest factors.

Which is more important: being a student or a senator?

Wholeheartedly it is more important to me to be a student than an officer. Many people need to realize that SGA is dependent on the student body not the other way around. I am in no way trying to promote myself as a higher being on campus. I am merely trying to leave a better University for the classes that come after me.

How important is transparency in SGA on a scale of 1-10?

On a scale of 1-10 for SGA transparency I

would rate it at an 8.

Why is transparency important or not important to you?

There is no need for reckless, under-the-table politics in any government, and especially on our campus. Like I mentioned earlier, SGA is dependent on the student body to become what it is. And, when in place, is a leading contribu-tor to academic life. This being said, I gave it an 8 because I don’t like the idea of big brother. Also, I understand the need for executive recess when necessary, but it should not be abused by the Senate to hide information from the Stu-dent body.

What is your favorite thing about USA?

My favorite thing about South is that each student can make a difference. If someone had asked me if this is what I expected I would get out of a college experience, I would have said no. But, each year I find new ways to make an impact, whether it is being a founding member of an organization or competing in a competi-tion to raise money for charity. Every student can make what he/she wants to out of the South Alabama experience.

What is your least favorite thing about USA?

My least favorite thing about South is the limited hours of operation. I am extremely

happy that the renovated market is open in the mornings and late afternoons. Yet, the library closes long before my studying is through, and other campus resources’ hours of operation are not up to par with the needs of the student body.

Why should the Vanguard support you?

The Vanguard should support me because I am an everyday student who, if elected, will serve as a dedicated member of the student body. The Vanguard has seen, throughout my term as Senator, how dedicated and hard work-ing I am to better our university and ensure the student voice is always heard. GO JAGS!!!

Why are you running for this position?

In my 4 years at the University and 2 years of being involved in SGA, I have been a part of many excit-ing changes around campus. I am running for President of SGA because I know I can represent the students

and their needs to the University Administra-tion. Any one who know me knows I am very vocal and passionate about SGA, which is ex-actly the type of representation that our students need.

Is there a parking problem on cam-pus?

I think we can all agree that there are im-provements to be made in world of parking. However, the students and administration have not been able to come up with an agreeable plan to handle the issues. In my opinion a parking ga-rage would be the most beneficial, and the worst fix would be open parking. In open parking ev-eryone would drive from class to class, there would be more wrecks, and it negates the entire initiative of the jag bikes which was to discourage driving around campus.

Are you Greek. I am not affiliated with any Greek organiza-

Jessica Byrd: Running for SGA President

tion.

What is wrong with SGA? I believe that SGA as a group has lost sight of

what we were elected to do; assuming of course the students elected knew their duties in the be-ginning. Many times I find that new members elected to SGA did not do their research prior to running and have no idea of their duties in SGA. In the end most problems can be traced back to a lack of communication and a lack of account-ability.

What is right with SGA? Every semester numerous student groups

come to SGA requesting money to go to conven-tions, hold gatherings, and to buy items vital to their organization. Just this past semester we al-located over $110,000 to different organization, which does not include other senate projects and late co-sponsorships. Budget meetings are some of the few times that members get excited about SGA and work together toward a common goal - to help student groups.

Which is more important; being a stu-dent or an officer?

Being a student is how SGA is able to know and understand the needs of all the South Ala-bama students. An officer without the student aspect is what we call “Administration”. I be-lieve the only way to be an efficient officer is to be an involved student and keep the lines of communication open between the students and SGA, and between SGA and Administration.

How important is transparency in SGA on a scale of 1 to 10?

I would rate the importance of transparency a 7.

Why is transparency important?I believe that students should know exactly

how their money is being spent. I also believe they should know how the student government is being an advocate for them. However there are times when sensitive matters are being dis-cussed in the senate, an example would be an impeachment trial, when deliberation needs to be private.

What is your favorite thing about USA?

I love how active our Alumni Association is with the University. South Alabama is approach-ing it 50 year anniversary and we have come so far. Many of the wonderful new buildings on campus would not have been possible without funding from our Alumni. I think it is great that when students graduate they want to give back to the University.

What is your least favorite thing about USA?

I really hate it when I hear people comparing South to other universities such as Alabama or Auburn; football programs, who has more stu-dents, or who has the tallest belltower. The Uni-versity of South Alabama is amazing, and has so much to offer to incoming or transfer students.

Moulton Tower was built by donations to be a center piece for the school and to honor a won-derful president. I want students to come to USA because they love it, not because it’s a second choice.

Why should the Vanguard support you?

Writing for the Vanguard takes time, dedica-tion, and a love for USA. Anyone who cares about our University and its students would want the best representation in SGA. I am an experienced leader who loves South and takes student needs to heart. I feel like I am a qualified candidate who has exceptional leadership skills and the time to dedicate to helping SGA reach it’s full potential.

Why are you running for this position?

I believe I can lead the SGA to make a posi-tive influence on the University of South Alabama. I will inspire my fellow SGA mem-bers to make ef-

fective and efficient decisions that will benefit the student body and the institution.

Is there a parking problem on campus? Why or why not?

The rapid growth of USA has caused a parking problem on campus. With new buildings under construction, this problem will only increase upon completion. I feel that it is up to the SGA to resolve this issue for the stu-dent body as quickly as possible. The addition of a parking deck or imple-menting more universal parking like the Mitchell Center would benefit the students greatly.

Zain Husain: Running for President

SeniorPolitical ScienceKappa Sigma

Are you Greek? If so, state your affiliation.

Yes I am Greek. I am apart of the Kappa Sigma Fraternity.

What is wrong with the SGA?The SGA can become more effective

if they did not delay issues or other things on the agenda. There are topics that are tabled on to the next week and they do not get done. The SGA needs to direct more focus to student in-volvement. SGA should be an organi-zation that benefits the student body.

What is right with the SGA?The SGA is an organization that

benefits the students. Appropriations are given to clubs and organizations. Rules and regulations are passed through the SGA. The SGA can also provide leadership opportunities to members.

Which is more important; be-ing a student or an officer?

I would say both are very important to the excellence of the university. I believe in a balance and that they go hand in hand.

How important is transparen-cy in SGA on a scale of 1-10?

I believe transparacy in an organza-tion is a 10.

Why is transparency impor-tant or not important to you?

The SGA should not withhold any actions or information from their con-stituents.

What is your favorite thing about USA?

I love that the University of South Alabama is a growing and thriving university. USA has a lot of promise and opportunity.

What is your least favorite thing about USA?

South Alabama at times seems like a commuter school. There are not enough activities happening on the weekends. I hope to have the opportu-nity to increase campus involvement and Jaguar pride.

Why should The Vanguard sup-port you?

I feel that I will make a positive in-

fluence on the SGA and this university. I was born and raised here in Mobile. I went to high school right down Old Shell. I have seen South change in soo many great ways. I always dreamed of coming to USA and making a differ-ence. I feel that I have the motivation and determination to make South just a little bit better. I have the work ethic and the drive to help our student body and the institution get to new heights.

Is there a parking problem on campus?

Yes I believe parking is a huge con-cern for most students on campus. Let’s get real, as a student myself; I have been late to many classes be-cause I have to park in the middle of nowhere so I don’t get ticketed. I honestly think parking should be open and it should be first come first serve.

What is wrong with SGA?There is nothing wrong with SGA

from my stand point, but just like ev-erything in life you can never stop im-proving.

What is right with SGA?SGA is a fine organization and what

I believe SGA does right is the overall intent to help the student body and to look out for the best interest of stu-dents and the community.

Which is more important; be-ing a student or an officer?

Neither is more important than the other. My reasoning for this is that, to be a great SGA officer you have to be a great student and vice versa.

How important is transparen-cy of SGA on a scale of 1-10?

On a scale of 1-10 I would say a 10.

Why is transparency impor-tant or not important to you?

Transparency is important to me because, I believe that all students should know what SGA is doing at all times, and ultimately it is for the stu-dent’s best interest.

What is your favorite thing about USA?

My favorite thing would have to be the diversity of students here and be-ing able to interact with different rac-es & cultures

What is your least favorite thing about USA?

I would have to say the parking tickets and overall parking setup.

Why should the Vanguard sup-

Why are you running for this position?

Since my arrival on South’s campus in 2009 I have enjoyed seeing South Alabama grow and expand. I still see so much po-tential South not only its students but also to the Mobile communi-ty. Unfortunately, I feel

SGA has not been progressive enough to ensure that the maximum potential of USA is achieved. I aim to become SGA President to change that and accelerate the progression of this wonderful university.

Is there a parking problem on cam-pus? Why or why not?

Yes, there is a parking problem. I disagree with the notion that it is one of the main prob-lems on campus. The University should not start the construction of any new buildings on campus unless adequate parking will also be provided in the construction plans.

Are you Greek? If so, state your affili-ation.

No, I am not Greek. I look forward to work-ing with such hard working Greek organizations on campus if elected as SGA President. I feel like the Greek Organization’s philanthropy ef-forts on campus are often taken for granted by the University. I aim to connect Greek organiza-tions with other active non-Greek organization

on campus to help them in all their philanthropy endeavors. I will do this by strengthening an existing committee, if not creating a whole new senate committee that specializes in such a task.

What is wrong with SGA?SGA is simply not proactive enough. Many

critics of my platform claim that my ideas are just ideas. I strongly disagree. Nothing can get done if you don’t ask, if you don’t try. We need a SGA that is not afraid to take the initiative and meet with the University’s administration to change South Alabama for the better. SGA needs to be more determined in increasing student participation within SGA and the student forum. This cannot be done if the current SGA website does not even list the correct SGA meeting time and location for students to come and voice their concerns.

What is right with SGA?The SGA under the leadership of Kimberly

Proctor last year attempted to alter the non-dis-crimination policy at South Alabama to include sexual orientation in efforts to ensure the protec-tion of the LGBT community. I am anxious to pick up where Proctor left off. SGA was success-ful in including sexual orientation in the sexual harassment policy. I congratulate them on this. I would like to see this endeavor all the way through by including protection for the LGBT community in the non-discrimination policy.

Which is more important: being a stu-dent or an officer?

Being a student is more important than being an officer. An ambitious student means an ambi-

tious SGA officer, though.

How important is transparency in SGA on a scale of 1-10?

If we take a look at the current state of the SGA website I would have the rate the transpar-ency of the SGA with a 1. How can students have their voices be heard at the Student Forum if the SGA does not take the time to update the website to the correct time and location?

Why is transparency important or not important to you?

Every candidate is going to tell you that trans-parency is important to her. I am going to tell you how I am going to make SGA more transparent. The SGA should be in constant contact with the school newspaper, the Vanguard. The Vanguard should be informed by the SGA so that it can print the SGA meeting times and what impor-tant issues (tuition increases, academic calendar changes, etc.) will be discussed so that interested students will have the information they need to come voice their concerns.

What is your favorite thing about USA?

The pride we have here at South is inspiring to people everywhere. I love that I can go as far as Huntsville and see someone wearing a South Alabama shirt. That pride is only going to get stronger when we can look back as alumni in a decade and smile at the growth that has hap-pened on campus.

What is your least favorite thing about USA?

The infrastructure is growing on campus but

other basic programs such as a campus wide re-cycling program have not. If a million dollars can be dropped on a few portals for the University, why can’t a few thousand dollars be put towards a campus wide recycling program?

Why should the Vanguard support you?

The Vanguard has always been the most pro-gressive outlet on campus. Since my arrival on campus in 2009 I have been an avid reader of the newspaper. I have read the Vanguard from Editor-in-Chief Matthew Peterson to Cassie Fambro and the voice of the Vanguard has stayed the same: the Vanguard desires to see South Alabama be all it can be and challenges it to be. I am the most progressive candidate who has an honest desire to see South Alabama be the best it can be.

Why are you running for this position?

I am running for Student-At-Large to continue to improve our growing campus and community. As stated on my Face-book Event site, there are a lot of non-aca-demic based issues I wish to improve

for our students to improve the university’s appeal. You can visit my Facebook Event by searching Facebook for “Eric Beovich for SGA Student-At-Large.”

Is there a parking problem on cam-pus? Why or why not?

There is a parking problem on campus, but it is not solely a shortage of parking spots. Improvements can be made to our parking without building and spending an outland-ish amount of money. I am actually currently researching the issues with our parking for a class, and will implement the best solutions I find if I am elected to improve parking for stu-dents without spending large sums of univer-sity money.

Are you a Greek? If so, state your af-filiation.

I have been a member of Tau Kappa Epsi-lon Fraternity since the Fall of 2008 and have held positions of Vice President, Secretary, Social Chairman, House Chairman, Athletics Chairman, and Pledge Class Treasurer.

What is wrong with SGA?SGA has become a popularity contest and

Eric Beovich: Running for Student-At-Largea resume stuffer. Too many people want to be on SGA to seem important and look good, and they only get there because of their name. If I lose this election, I want to lose it because there is a better candidate, not because of the number of friends I have. With my experience on SGA and past leadership, I have no doubts about being the most qualified can-didate for this posi-tion, and I will do the job I am elected to the best of my ability.

Which is more important; being a student or being an officer?

Being a student. We are all at the University of South Alabama for our education first, and that’s what I will always focus on first. But I do have a proven track record of helping students get what they need through the means of SGA and improving our university and its organiza-tions.

How important is transparency in SGA on a scale of 1-10?

I would say 7. It really depends on the is-sue. Obviously we should want students to know where their money goes and we could do a better job of getting that information to them. A better working relationship with The Van-guard could greatly increase our transparency

by getting the students more information on what SGA is doing. On the other hand, there

are many aspects of SGA that stu-dents can’t be a part of such as judicial hear-ings. I think the main concern here is with ap-propriations and the like, which we should be as transparent as possible with to the student body.

Why is transparency important or not important to you?

It is important to me because it holds SGA accountable. To elaborate on the previous question, students deserve to know where there money goes, and we should do a bet-ter job of informing them. Outside of appro-priations, travel grants, co-sponsorships, and senate projects, a lot of what we do on SGA is behind the scenes and isn’t really necessary for students to know. Everything SGA does is because the student body elected us to these positions and to perform these tasks, and they aren’t always major concerns of the entire stu-dent body.

What is your favorite thing about USA?

buildings and the rumors of a new football sta-dium, you can tell South is doing what it takes to become a more nationally known school. The next few years will be an exciting time to be a Jaguar and I would love the opportunity to continue shaping the future of our university.

Why should The Vanguard support you?

While The Vanguard should represent each candidate equally, the students should support me because of my proven track record on SGA and my visions for improving the university. I have had in depth looks at other universities and have a lot of great ideas for improving our university, including issues such as parking and campus safety of course. Another thing I would like to do is increase student support of our university athletics. We have great talent in our athletic programs and should have a big future in many of our sports, all of which de-serve more recognition.

Why are you running for this position?

I served this year on the govern-mental affairs com-mittee in SGA and grew into a role of accepting a lot of responsibility very quickly. This al-lowed me to really

learn the problems that USA faces with state funding and makes me want to be a part of the solution as AG.

Is there a parking problem on campus? Why or why not?

Honestly, there is a parking problem on EVERY campus. As AG I would have some influence in that arena, but I cannot make any promises. I do feel that there should be parking garages on campus similar to those at Auburn.

I am a Brother of the Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity. I was initiated in the fall of 2010 and have served in countless chair-man positions and leadership roles. I am also the Vice President of IFC at South.

What is wrong with SGA?The lack of accountability. If the nega-

tives are going to be put on display then so too should the positives.

What is right with SGA?The growth. People are more and more

interested in SGA and with that more and more people want to be involved. That alone will breed diversity in SGA.

Which is more important; being a student or being an officer?

Being a student. If you do not fulfill your academic requirements then you do not deserve to be an officer.

How important is transparency in SGA on a scale of 1-10?

I would say a 6. I feel that the student body should know the workings of SGA as well as the Administration. Honestly, there are times when organizations take the fall for decisions that were not even their own.

Why is transparency important or not important to you?

It boils down to accountability, but knowing where to go with it. If there are problems then they need to be known, but fixed nonetheless. Essentially, its easy to say what’s wrong, its hard to be apart of the solution.

What is your favorite thing about USA?

Its location. As a coastal guy, I can’t be too far away from the water or I get antsy!

to update the Humanities Building, which is an eyesore and in desperate need of up-dating. If every other building is getting a renovation, why should the Humanities be left out?

Is there a parking problem on campus?

Personally, I do not believe that there is a parking problem on campus. There has always been a lot of space in the cen-tral zone, which is a ten minute walk to anywhere on campus. Would extra space hurt? Of course not, but I do not feel that this issue is high priority.

What would your first senate project be if you had $1000?

Renovation of the Humanities build-ing. Making the inside more comfortable and the outside more aesthetic.

What is wrong with SGA?It has always seemed as though the

SGA has been inaccessible to common students. Either students don’t realize it is there, or what they do, and consequently they feel as if they have no voice. Further, I feel as though some SGA spending has been unfounded and downright silly.

Why are you running for this position?

I am running for MCOB Sena-tor to become more involved on campus and give back to my fellow students. I would like to use this position to better my college and

university by using my experiences with other organizations to accom-plish student needs.

Is there a parking problem on campus? Why or why not?

I believe that this is a parking prob-lem on campus. In my time here at USA I have seen our campus grow to almost 16000 students. We have add-ed new buildings and entrance way portals but parking seems to be last on the agenda.

What would your first senate project be if you had $1000?

I would like have SGA sponsored tu-toring during finals week.

Are you Greek? If so state your affiliation.

Yes, I am a Sigma Chi.

What is wrong with SGA?I believe that officers and senators

of SGA need to be more in touch with the people they serve. Most students could not name the senators that rep-resent them. How can we serve the stu-dent body if the students do not know who we are?

What is right with SGA?I believe our current SGA is trans-

parent and run very efficiently. SGA is always willing to reach out and help any way it can whether it be through co-sponsorships or senate projects.

Which is more important; be-ing a student or a senator?

Being a student is defiantly more important. As a senator you serve the needs of the students.

Why are you running for this position?

I’m running for this position be-cause I wanted to get involved in what goes on around campus. I also wanted to test SGA out and see if I had what it takes to eventually hold an office in SGA and be a leader around campus.

Is there a parking problem on campus? Why or why not?

I believe that there is a minor park-ing problem on campus. I dont see the need for zone parking passes. I feel that students at South who purchase a parking pass should have access to whichever parking lot they need at the time. First come first serve.

What would your first senate project be if you had $1000?

I’m not sure what my first senate project would be but thats just because this is my first time attempting to get involved with SGA.

I am Greek. I am affiliated with Tau Kappa Epsilon

Which is more important; be-ing a student or being an officer?

Is there a parking lot problem on campus?

Yes, there is a big problem in terms of parking. East parking is one of the major problems right now because of the new allied health building.

Are you Greek?NOWhat is wrong with SGA?There are many things wrong with

SGA at the moment. One of my main concern is the inability for the officers to work together and help each other

SeniorBiomedical ScienceUnaffiliated

Jean-Pierre Arditi: Running for Treasurerin a time of need. There is an extreme lack of communication among all the officers and without that communica-tion problems that could have been avoided were not like the Impeach-ment trial. What is right with SGA?Right now about the only thing

that is right about SGA are the reso-lutions and amendments that were passed during the course of this year. Of course Appropriations are a plus as well.

Which is more important; be-ing a student or an officer?

This question goes without saying. Being a student is and always should be a top priority. Being an officer is a perk that comes with being a good stu-dent. As a student we would not want to elect an incompetent person work-

ing as an officer of SGA to make deci-sions for the student body.

How important is transparen-cy in SGA on a scale of 1-10?

I would give it a 10

Why is transparency impor-tant or not important to you?

Transparency is important to me because as a member of the student body I expect to know how the people that I’ve helped elect work to help make my college life more enjoyable.

What is your favorite thing about USA?

That is a very hard question to an-swer. They’re many things that I enjoy at USA, but one of my favorite things about USA I would have to say is the music program. The music program here is fantastic love attending the concerts and even more so performing in them. The professors in the music department are incredibly talented musicians and the music that they perform are breathtaking.

What is your least favorite thing about USA?

My least favorite thing would have to be exam schedules. Saturday exams are a nightmare and the lack of a dead day does not help a student prepare for finals.

Why are you running for this posi-tion?

It takes a lot of audacity to say, “I am qualified to fill this position;” however, after working with professionals at an international oil and gas engi-

neering firm, I have learned to write, dress, and act professionally. My ex-perience as event coordinator and fundraiser for “YOU Have the Power!” (Spring 2011), campaign coordinator for the new recycling pilot program (Fall 2011-present), and Opinion Edi-tor for The Vanguard (present) have trained me sufficiently to fulfill any tasks and succeed in any goals that I am given.

Is there a parking problem on campus? Why or why not?

Yes. It’s a simple concept. If a cer-tain number of students are going to class at one time, and there are fewer usable parking spaces, an immediate problem is generated. This is especial-ly relevant to East parking. I wrote an article in The Vanguard last semester that addressed this problem by mak-ing an unused central zone “neutral” and allow all passes to be valid in this

Jeff Gill: Running for Vice Presidentzone. This is just one course of action that could be discussed; communica-tion with all parties involved in the decision-making would be ideal.

Are you Greek? If so, state your affiliation.

No, but I have been recently in-ducted into Mortar Board Honors So-ciety.

What is wrong with SGA?As far as I can tell, SGA is some-

what unapproachable to the common student. There is little consistent ad-vertisement of SGA’s activity. The urge to work with the students has to come from both students and repre-sentatives. Representatives should be known by their respective colleges and should also have a well-publicized method of capturing requests from each colleges’ students. The potential that SGA can be immense, if used ap-propriately.

What is right with SGA? There seems to be a well-socialized

group of individuals both in the SGA and campaigning to participate in SGA. It is always easier to plan some-thing when you can count on a group to communicate openly and transpar-ently.

Which is more important: be-ing a student or an officer?

Without students, there are no of-ficers. When I am elected Vice Presi-dent, I will try my hardest to not shirk my student duties.

How important is transparen-cy in SGA on a scale of 1-10?

8

Why is transparency important or not important to you?

It should be well known by the stu-dents what their activity fees are go-ing to, and I would want to work with certain media outlets (yeah, you know the one) to forward this information in an easy-to-read format. Not only would it help the Vanguard increase readership, but the student body could be more aware of how SGA is appropriating money.

What is your favorite thing about USA?

Driving at night by Shelby Hall, Mitchell Center, Moulton Tower, the new Rec Center, and the portals as they are illuminated is both humbling and inspiring. I love experiencing “the New South” on my late-night returns from McDonald’s.

What is your least favorite thing about USA?

There are enclaves of passion with-in the student body, but it is kind of disheartening to see such an over-

arching epidemic of apathy.

Why should the Vanguard sup-port you?

I have worked for The Vanguard as the Opinion Editor for a semester so far, and contributed articles on a regular basis for close to a year. There would be little doubt in saying that we agree on most on-campus issues. Along with my innovative ideas to in-crease Vanguard readership and SGA transparency, I have helped the plas-tic recycling program get on its feet. It should be more than evident to the student population that I am quali-fied, consistent, principled, and use-ful.

I am running for Engineering Senator because I see things around campus that I feel the SGA can help improve, such as the Academic Calendar, the Jag Tran routes, and more involve-ment in and around campus and in the SGA itself.

Is there a parking problem on cam-

pus? Why or why not?Yes there is in certain areas. The new Recre-

ational Center is a problem area because of the amount of people that use the facilities.

What would your first senate project be in you had $1000?

Are you Greek? If so, state your affili-ation.

I am current President of Pi Kappa Phi Fra-ternity.

What is wrong with SGA?I don’t feel there is much wrong with SGA,

other than just the general student involve-ment. My main goal as Senator will be to get the school excited again. Excited and proud to be at South, and to encourage more involvement in SGA.

What is right with SGA?The want-to is there. The SGA just needs

fresh ideas.

Which is more important; being a student of a senator?

By far, being a student. We are here to learn and be a scholar first and foremost.

How important is transparency in SGA on a scale of 1-10?

not important to you?

What is your favorite thing about USA?

My favorite thing about USA is the small class sizes. Yea, we have our stadium seating classes, but a vast majority of them are smaller and you get to build a one on one relationship with your professor.

What is your least favorite thing about USA?

As a senator, how will you help repre-sent your college?

I will be a representative who knows what is best for my fellow Engineering students and the student body. I will fight for what is right, and best to help the students at USA.

As senator, how will you interact with students in your college?

I plan on having a meeting once a month, open to all students, but mainly Engineering students, where you can ask me questions, voice concerns, and just have a general discus-sion about any topic facing the campus.

Describe yourself in one word.BOLD

Why are you running for this position?

I’ve wanted to be more involved in SGA for a long time. This past year, I had the opportunity to serve as an Associ-ate Justice under Coleman and it was a great expe-

rience. I like being able to make a dif-ference and being a member of SGA al-lows students to make a big difference in their school. There are so many things I love about this school, but there are also things that I cannot stand about South. So instead of just complaining about my issues, I decided to run for Member-At-Large and try to improve the quality of school life here at South Alabama. I’m motivated, outspoken, and very ob-servant, and I truly believe I’m some-one who can make a difference for our school.

Is there a parking problem on campus? Why or why not?

Yes, of course there is a problem with parking. We have way too many stu-dents who drive, and not enough park-ing spots. If parking were allotted differ-ently, and if more specific parking zones were created, the problem may decrease a little bit. However, until more parking spots are created, there will always be a “parking problem.”

Are you Greek? If so, what is your affiliation?

Yes, I am a Phi Mu. However, I am also affiliated with many other student organizations on campus. I can relate to Greek students, honors students, ath-letes, and anyone else.

What is wrong with SGA?SGA could be a fabulous student or-

ganization. However, the organization can only be as strong as its members. In the past, some members of SGA seem to be unmotivated, biased towards certain organizations, and were uncooperative in manners such as appropriations. SGA should be the strongest, most helpful, most understanding, and well known or-ganization on campus. If elected Mem-ber-At-Large, I will strive to help fix this issue. I can’t promise major improve-ments, but I can promise that I will try to fix at least some of these issues, and ease the communication between SGA and the student body.

Which is more important; being a student or an officer?

JuniorMarketing & EconomicsPhi Mu

Ashley Trinh: Running for Member-At-LargeBoth are important. We are all in col-

lege for a reason, and that reason is to get an education and eventually gradu-ate. However, SGA officers have to be able to complete their duties for SGA and maintain their grades. They are held to a different standard, and they need to be excellent students and excellent members of SGA.

How important is transparency in SGA on a scale of 1-10?

Transparency is a 10 on the impor-tance scale.

Why is transparency important or not important to you?

It is very important because students should be aware of what their Student Government is involved in since they are the representatives of the entire student body. Why should anyone elect another student to be their representative for the school, and then not be allowed to know what they are doing?

What is your favorite thing about USA?

I love how South Alabama is a smaller University (but is growing very rapidly) but a student can still have the “large university” college experience along with other lifestyle benefits. South has a great Greek System, tons of student organizations, is near the beach, and is near a lot of large companies who pro-vide internships and jobs to students. I don’t think it gets a whole lot better than the benefits that South can offer a stu-dent.

What is your least favorite thing about USA?

The Grove. Enough said.

Why should the Vanguard sup-port you?

I am an outspoken, motivated, and thoughtful person. The Member-At-Large should be able to identify with ev-ery student on campus, and be able to represent them in an honest way. That’s who I am. Being a member of the Greek system, the honors program, working for South Alabama, a former dance team member, and being involved in other ac-tivities on campus has allowed me the opportunity to meet and speak with so many students. I believe I can represent the student body as a whole in an accu-rate manner and am the best person for the job.

always have to read the section from the police department about the on

campus crimes. Safety first. Would you ride a jag bike?

Haha, yes I would ride a jag bike. I

might fall off the bike and hurt myself, but jag bikes are kind of cool.

Favorite place to eat on campus?I love to eat at all of the locations on

campus! The Delta Deli is my favorite though, because the seasoned fries are

delicious. (P.S. I’m one of the South Alabama Dining Marketing Interns and

know a lot of the great Dining Deals. BEST JOB EVER!)

parking, putting a strain on many students. Certain actions should be taken to improve the current conditions to accommodate our growing student body.

What would your first senate proj-ect be if you had $1000?

My first senate project I would tackle if I had $1000 would be to work on security here at the university, by placing security boxes around campus at various locations.

What is wrong with SGA? Nothing is wrong with SGA per say but

there is always room for advancement and improvement.

What is right with SGA? SGA has served and worked for the stu-

dents and other issues presented on the campus of USA.

Which is more important; being a student or a senator?

They are both equally important; being a senator will allow me to be a voice for the student body and work on their behalf. But also being a student is my main purpose for being here .

How important is transparency in SGA on a scale of 1-10?

8

Why is transparency important or not important to you?

It is important to maintain the highest level of transparency with the student body. SGA needs to be more open about the go-ings-on of officers that have been elected to serve the student body and where our money is being spent.

What is your favorite thing about USA?

I enjoy all the amenities, and my quality education I am attaining here.

What is your least favorite thing about USA?

There is nothing I can say I like the least here at USA, but there is always room for im-

provement.

As senator, how will you help rep-resent your college? I will represent the College of Allied Health by working for the specific needs of my college.

As senator, how will you interact with students in your college?

As a senator for the College of Allied Health, I would like to create a Facebook page along with a twitter account so all stu-dents can send direct messages to me. A page that provides a forum and initiates conversa-tion is a good. I would also set up times that I can be available in the Allied Health building to meet face to face with students to listen to them, collaborate on ideas and connect with them.

Why are you running for this position?

I am running for this position because I believe I can make a difference on campus. I am a natural born leader but I also know the value of being a team player and listen-ing to others opinions.

Is there a parking problem on cam-pus?

Yes, I believe there is a very big problem with parking on campus. I personally have had multiple parking problems in the past such as: not having enough parking, and parking zones not being properly allotted. A solution to these parking problems could be re zoning the parking zones, or adding additional parking.

What would your first senate project be if you had $1000?

For my first senate project I would invest the money into having more signs around campus. Personally I have had countless people stop and ask me for directions and I feel the USA campus could really benefit from having more signs or possibly information booths in certain areas on campus. This would make finding classes and other important places on campus easier for new students and visitors.

Senatoris that they simply don’t do enough. As leaders on campus, I feel the SGA can do more to fix stu-dents’ problems and get more students involved on the campus. Many USA students are com-muter students and are not as connected with campus as on-campus residents. I feel SGA can do more to get commuter students involved.

What is right with the SGA? I feel SGA does a good job in listening to stu-

dents’ problems even if they do not always have solutions. I also believe SGA does a great job in getting funds for other campus groups.

Which is more important; being a stu-dent or a senator?

Personally, being a student is my number one priority. However, being a senator will be my next. As students, we are all here to go to class, graduate, and receive a degree. Therefore, being a student should always come first!

How important is transparency in SGA on a scale of 1-10?

On a scale of 1-10 transparency is definitely a 10. Transparency is important because if stu-dents do not actively see the SGA striving to make changes to fix their problems; then they might lose support for SGA. Having the sup-port of students is vital for SGA; therefore SGA members should always listen to students and try their hardest to fix the problems on campus.

Why is transparency important or not important to you?

Transparency is important to me because actions speak louder than words. Therefore, if students do not feel the SGA is listening to their complaints and acting to fix them. Then students will most likely lose support for SGA, which de-feats the purpose of the SGA.

What is your favorite thing about USA?

I love being on campus and getting involved in campus events. I also enjoy that USA has a lot of different clubs and organizations students can be members of. I also love that there are so many different types of students here with diverse backgrounds and cultures.

What is your least favorite thing about USA?

My least favorite thing about USA would have to be that there is not a football stadium on campus. A large part of the college experience is going to football games and sporting events. Without a stadium on campus, USA students are at a disadvantage. Overall having a football sta-dium on campus is more convenient and would enhance school spirit.

As senator, how will you help repre-sent your college?

As a senator I would be representing the College of Arts and Sciences, which a large ma-jority of students at USA are a part of. I believe as senator I can offer my college my leadership skills and organization. As a senator, I would in essence be the voice for the students of College of Arts and Sciences. Most of all I would keep their best interest in making decisions that would af-fect them.

As senator, how would you interact with students in your college?

As senator, I would interact with others in my college by being a member of the BSA. I would

also become a member of other clubs involving College of Arts and Sciences majors.

Students forced to park creatively at

Rec-Center

by PaTricK HerriNGGuy with a car

Beginning in the fall semester of 2012, demolition work will begin

on Humanities South. Dr. John Smith, vice president for Student Affairs has confi rmed that the building is being torn down to make room for more parking spaces in the Central parking lot.

“There just wasn’t enough room for students to park,” Smith said. “And since we aren’t really using Humanities South for anything important, we fi gured that would be a prime location to put more parking spots.”

Students parking in the Central lot are ecstatic.

Senior Wilhelm von Smitherson is one of the few who couldn’t contain his excitement.

“I was so happy that I had to text everyone I knew to let them know!” von Smitherson said.

Unfortunately for his peers, von Smitherson learned the news while he was pulling into his Central parking spot.

He quit paying attention to where he was going and totaled seventeen and a half cars and side swiped a JagTran.

Students inside the JagTran were clinging to their seats for dear life.

In the aftermath of the accident, von Smitherson told the involved parties of the school’s plans to demolish South Humanities.

Everyone was so excited, they huddled around the mass that was their cars and began singing “Na Na Hey Hey Kiss Him Goodbye.”

Smith wouldn’t rule out also demolishing Humanities North if the enrollment continues to rise.

“If we need more parking spots, we can do without Humanities altogether,” Smith said. “Those Arts and Science students can just have classes in the parking lots if necessary.”

Humanities will be demolished in favor of more parking on campus

In a new attempt to provide better transportation across campus, Presi-

dent Gordon Moulton has announced the impending arrival of Jag Brooms.

Due to the already popular and somewhat

ing at students as a result, Peeta Mell, a sophomore, reported to The Van Guard.

“They didn’t look at me like a poor idiot Philosophy major!”

When consulting the padawan, he says he also intends to wield his magic to turn all of the water fountains into Kool-Aid dispensers, something many SGA presi-dents have promised but never delivered.

He intends to cancel school the day af-ter every midnight game launch, and ev-eryone gets a pet jaguar if they attend USA.

Jag Brooms coming to USA

by baiLey HammoNDHarry Potter Fanatic infamous Jag Bikes, the sidewalks across

campus are now overcrowded with bicyclists leaving little room for those pedestrians who aren’t lucky enough to fi nd a functioning Jag Bike or own their own two-wheeled, self-pro-pelled transport.

With such an issue leading to students be-

ing late for class, it’s no wonder that univer-sity offi cials felt a pressing need to provide alternate modes of transportation.

Cue the Jag Broom Initiative.Using the ancient and well-known tech-

niques of the wizarding world, the University of South Alabama has partnered with Cam-pus Brooms, Inc. to put together an entire fl eet of 200 fl ying brooms to be made avail-able to students starting next Fall.

The brooms will be limited to fl ying fi ve feet off the ground for liability reasons and

will only be able to fl y approximately 10-15 mph depending on wind direction and the phase of the moon.

Jag Brooms will sport jaguar heads on the tip of the broomstick and come in three color combinations: red/white, blue/red and white/blue.

Students are warned that trying to fl y the brooms off campus will cause them to buck the rider off, whereupon the broom will then return to the nearest Jag Broom station.

Bartram Daily, a representative from Campus Brooms, Inc., was

on campus earlier in the semester to run tests.

When asked what he was testing, Couch replied, “Air quality, relative wind speeds, gravity fluctuations, nor-mal stuff. Gotta prepare for everything. Brooms ain’t just something you can hop on and point in the direction you wanna go. Lots of factors involved.”

Campus Brooms, Inc. prides itself on creating quality travel brooms with top-notch security features and customized for individual needs.

With such measures in place, we won’t likely hear about any Jag Brooms being found in Prichard.

Monty Heelstomper, Jag Broom coor-dinator, encourages students to look at this newest addition to campus as a step in a new direction.

“We’re trying to go green, and the only logical step after Jag Bikes was, of course, Jag Brooms,” Heelstomper stated.

“A number of other universities (I won’t name names) have already begun to implement brooms on their campuses with great success, and I hope the same will be said of USA,” Heelstomper added.

Some concerned students and faculty are worried that the brooms will just be another drain on the University’s financ-es.

“I think it’s a good idea and all, because the traffic problem has really gotten out of control, but where are we getting the money for these brooms?” Jessie White, junior Graphic Design major, asked

“It just seems a little fishy to me.”However, thanks to a recent donation

by the National Federation for Broom-stick Awareness, the fleet of brooms will not cost the University—or the students—any additional pennies.

So, come next fall, look to the sky.

The Jaguar GamesJAkE HOWELL

JagLife Writer

With the recent, extraordinary suc-cess of the “The Hunger Games”

film, people all over the world are wondering if they would survive in the arena, suppos-ing an apocalyptic event that spawned a new country with eccentric taste in body-art was to actually happen.

Unlike those other poor souls who are stuck wondering, students at the University of South Alabama will soon get the chance to put themselves to the test.

Plans are already underway to end the se-mester with South’s own version of “The Hun-ger Games.”

The event, tentatively called The Jaguar Games, will pit one male and one female stu-dent from each college against one another in a fight-to-the-death.

The winner will receive, not only the in-stant, campus-wide fame of being a victor, but also a full scholarship that covers all expenses related to their undergraduate career.

“We think people will jump at the chance to get a scholarship like this. Not only is it a killer resume builder, but, let’s be honest, who’s going to turn the winner of a death match down for a job?” said Dr. Murphy Cor-nerstone, one of the administrators in charge of planning the event.

When asked how the candidates will be chosen, Cornerstone answered, “While we love volunteers, the goal is to get everyone on campus involved. Each student’s name will be entered into the drawing once for each semes-ter they’ve attended the University, including summer. We’ll also be splitting the College of Arts and Sciences into two groups to even things out.”

The arena for the event is being prepared as well, mentioned Cornerstone.

“While I can’t give out too many details, the games will be held in the area that com-prises the Dr. Glenn Sebastian nature trail with some interesting modifications and sur-

prises,” Cornerstone added. An insider from the administration, who

wished to remain anonymous, hinted at sev-eral of the “surprises”.

“There’s a reason the Life Sciences Build-ing and Meisler Hall have been without heat so often over the past few months.

“President Moulton wanted water diverted to the arena for some sort of mid-game shake-up.

“I’ve also heard he wanted to turn Moulton Tower into some sort of launching tower where the administration could target areas of the arena that were too peaceful. He’s keeping most of his ideas close to his chest, though,” the anonymous source confided.

Obviously, things are well underway for this inaugural event. Students are already strategizing and drafting ideas for what they’d do in the arena.

“If I’m chosen, I’d definitely have an edge over some people because I have developed this insane ability to throw pens like daggers.

Kacie Watson (left) and Parker chastain (right) could be two of the students who will participate in The Jaguar Games, and they look ready to fight for the ultimate scholarship prize.

jakE hoWEll/jaGlIFE WrITEr

“All I’d have to do is stay out of the other people’s reaches and take them down. Do you think they’ll put a box of Bic pens in the are-na? They’re the best,” said Travis Eccleston, a sophomore Education major.

Not everyone on campus, though, is please with the administration’s new pet project.

Candy Carrol, a senior Chemistry major, stated, “I think this is just horrible. How can people actually be excited about the Univer-sity forcing us to do this? They’re all just sick, twisted sadists.

“I mean, this is almost as bad as forcing us to have meal plans. Also, I wonder where the money to pull this off is coming from. Tuition, I expect.”

Are the Jaguar Games just some devious plan from the administration to raise tuition under the guise of scholarship and friendly competition?

In the meantime, picking up a lethal skill might not be such a bad idea.

squirrels have some competition

Battle cries ring out across campus.Lines of battle are drawn in the

sand and the skies, and the two opposing forces eye each other with beady eyes.

Any crumb left unattended is fair game for a fight to the bitter end as local squirrel gangs try to defend their territory against the encroaching hordes of seagulls intent on devouring all edibles under the blue sky.

Caught in between this war of the tiny creatures are students who just want to get from building to building across campus with their belongings and persons unmo-lested.

Rebekah Lloyd, junior Elementary Education major, observed, “Squirrels have the natural, local advantage. They know this campus inside and out. They have hidden caches of goodies that those seagulls have no chance of locating. To those seagulls I say, ‘Good luck, suckers.’”

Each year as summer comes around, the seagulls arrive to make things interest-ing on campus for everyone involved.

“Every morning I get woken up with the sound of like 20 seagulls cawing outside of my door. I don’t know what they’re talk-ing about, but I think they’re making plans to take over the world,” confided Jeremy Sumpter, sophomore philosophy major.

This raucous cawing has drawn the notice of students and faculty alike. The squirrels, not to be outdone, have started

holding squirrel choirs in the trees outside of the Humanities and Life Sciences build-ings during lunch hours.

“They’re not half bad,” commented Greg Alberston, associate professor of an-cient history. “A tad untrained, but with some proper guidance, I think USA could have the first squirrel choir in history.”

Whether a squirrel choir is feasible is hard to say, but until the violence between squirrels and seagulls is abated, we won’t know for sure.

“The tension is so tight we could use it to cut cheese for our crackers,” stated grounds maintenance spokesperson, Ben Hopper. “I’m out there in the thick of

Seagulls, the denizens of the salty air, land on campus to the dismay of many--including the squirrels.

things every day, and it’s getting to be a problem for us at grounds maintenance.”

The squirrels have been a fixture at the University of South Alabama for time out of mind.

The furry creatures with the bushy tails skitter to and fro inciting quick conversa-tions about their actions between random passers-by.

However, with the new threat from the air, both squirrels and humans alike are looking at the skies with apprehension, wondering when the next cawing dive-bomb will occur.

One can’t help but think about the iconic film, “The Birds,” and shudder at the notion of flocks of seagulls taking over campus in deadly waves.

At least the squirrels are predictable and easily distracted by things of the nut variety.

Seagulls have a single-mindedness best portrayed in “Finding Nemo” with the re-peating call of “Mine! Mine!”

Now that sound is haunting the air at USA, and the threat of attacks from above is added to the already large list of student worries, including JagTran attacks, squir-rel thievery, bike hit-and-runs, sudden downpours and hypothermia.

One final warning to the wary: do not stand in between a squirrel and a seagull. It’s a place of undeniable danger and to be avoided at all costs.

“It’s almost like listening to nails on a chalkboard,” confessed Steven Davis, freshman Biology major, about hearing a squirrel vs. seagull fight.

If you witness a scuffle between the two varmints, call your local Resident Animal Advisor and report it immediately.

Don’t be a hero; heroes get themselves mauled by angry land and air creatures.

CurseMadden

Much like Santa Clause and the Easter Bunny, the Madden

Curse has become so obvious, that no sports fans should ever question its ex-istence. Wait, did I really just imply that Santa Clause and the Easter Bunny were real? Oh well, I digress.

So what should a person make of this so-called curse?

Maybe it’s not a curse. After all, it is possible that the sudden injuries and obvious lack of production that these players face after being on the cover is all purely coincidental. Or maybe this curse originated as the result of rumors created by jealous players, who weren’t given the opportunity to be on the cover of this popular video game.

Madden is currently in the process of choosing its newest victim, or should I say newest player to grace their cover.

It seems as if most players are excited

about being on the cover. Other players take the smarter route and would rather wait until the new season starts and try their luck at avoiding possible bounties being place on them by the New Orleans Saints.

And oddly enough, it seems as if that’s the safest alternative and when you look at the history of the Madden Curse you can see why.

Take a look at a few of its most no-table victims.

Michael Vick—Before signing with the Eagles, Vick graced the cover of Madden NFL 2004 as the quarterback of the Atlanta Falcons. Just one day af-ter the video game was released, Vick broke his leg in a preseason game. He missed the next 11 games due to that in-jury.

Donovan Mcnabb—After leading the Philadelphia Eagles to the Super Bowl, quarterback Donovan Mcnabb appeared on the cover of Madden NFL ‘06. Soon after the game was released, he tore his

ACL in a game against the Tennessee Titans. This was a season-ending injury.

Peyton Hillis—As a result of his breakout season with the Cleveland Browns, fans voted running back Pey-ton Hillis onto the cover of the most recent edition of Madden. Shortly after Madden NFL ‘12 was released, Hillis had a vast drop off in production. To make matters worse, he battled nagging injuries the entire 2011-2012 season, a season that was a contract year for him.

So is the Madden Curse real, or is it all just a made up coincidence? I mean, the whole idea of a video game cover being cursed almost seems laughable doesn’t it? Lots of players have bad sea-sons without being on the cover, don’t they? Maybe there is a curse, and maybe there isn’t.

Deny the curse all you want but good luck to your favorite team once its star player ends up on the cover of the new-est edition of Madden.

USA adds Skateboard team, eyes Dyrdek as possible coach

The University of South Alabama has taken a step into the extreme

sports world by adding a men’s and wom-en’s skateboarding team. The decision was made this last weekend.

USA will be one of only a few schools to officially have a skateboarding team, and they hope that this will help in recruiting.

There has been much discussion on the coaches for the teams, as well as where a skate park will be built on campus.

USA athletic officials have said they are in contract discussions with professional skater and TV star Rob Dyrdek to become the USA skateboarding coach.

As for the skate park, Dyrdek will surely have a hand in designing and building it and has hinted at using the inside of the circle by the dorms as a key place for the

park. As more information comes available,

The Van Guard staff will update. Look for Dyrdek to feature his talks with USA and

the possibility of coaching a team on the next episode of his show, “The fantasy fac-tory.”

In sports, just like most things in life, we have our favorites. We pick them for different reasons. Maybe one athlete was your dad’s favorite or maybe the certain player reminds you of yourself.

One reason some people like certain sports figures is their attitude and the type of person they are. This list is all about those people. The best of team-mates and the nicest people you can watch in sports.

5. Chad Ochocinco – formerly Chad Johnson, Ochocinco changed his name to honor his favorite sports team, the 1985 Chicago Bears. He is re-ferred to as one of the least flashy play-ers in the league and has yet to draw an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty in his career.

4. Alex Rodriguez – affection-ately referred to as “A-Rod”, Rodri-guez isn’t concerned with money or fame. He simply loves to play the game of baseball. When reports of steroids in baseball began surfacing he was ada-mantly against the prospect and has tested clean every time.

3. Rex Ryan — one of the most well-spoken and kind coaches in the NFL, Ryan rarely speaks out of line. His routine of keeping his feelings to himself and never being too brash has earned him a place in the hearts of players and coaches across the league.

2. Terrell Owens – loved by ev-eryone in the NFL, Owens gets along with his quarterbacks better than any wide receiver in recent memory. He is currently a free agent because so many teams are clamoring for his ser-vices, that he can’t pick one just yet.

1. LeBron James – before his eighth season in the NBA, James gra-ciously allowed for news cameras to broadcast his decision for where he’d be taking his talents the following sea-son. He is currently the most be-loved player in the NBA, and fans in Cleveland have no hard feelings after he left their organization to play for Miami.

live jaguar is being brought to the Univer-

sity of South Alabama, and will become the mascot for all USA athletics much as Mike the Ti-ger is for LSU.

The jaguar, which will be named Spotty, will be housed in a jungle exhibit, which will be constructed in the courtyard in between the student center and Meisler Hall. The exhibit will include tropical trees, a pool, a tire swing, a Landice L7 tread-mill, and a video monitor with a copy of P90X.

Not only will Spotty provide entertainment for the fans off the field, but also on the field as well. Spotty has been geneti-cally enhanced with a chemical known as “Compound SIYM”. The enhancement has provided Spotty with the ability to be-come a phenomenal athlete. Spotty will become a member of the football and basketball team during the 2012-2013 school year.

Jaguars typically average around 4-6 feet in length, but Spotty is an impressive 7 foot 5 inches long, and runs a 3.7 second 40-yard dash, allow-ing him to catch his prey with blinding speed. Spotty will play wide receiver and defensive back for the football team and center for the basketball team.

Spotty’s impressive size and jumping abil-ity has drawn the attention of entertain-ment group Ac-roDunk. What’s more impressive is that Spotty can perform the same high-flying dunks that Acro-Dunk performs without the assis-tance of a trampoline.

“I’ve seen him bite through three cinder blocks at once,” President Moulton said of

Spotty, “I’ve asked him to also help with all the construction on campus since we seem to be behind on everything.”

There have also been rumors that a movie may also be in the works, such as the popular “Air Bud” series. “They have the

saying ‘The honey badger don’t care’,” Sam “TogaMan” Wicker said of the new mascot. “They will soon be saying ‘Spotty

Everest in Nepal, which is wide-ly considered the birthplace of champions. He was found by Tim Tebow while he was on a mission trip to save the people of Nepal from “Manningitis”, a disease that has been linked back to a quarterback from Tennessee.

Spotty’s first career appear-ance will be against the Texas-San Antonio RoadRunners on August 30, where he hopes to take three cinder blocks out of the competition.

It is disgusting to hear people’s con-cerns about how little a teacher’s

salary is. Laymen and politicians need not sympathize. Truehearted educators care not about amounts of money but only the amount of positive impact they have on an individual’s life.

We education majors know exactly what we are signing up for when we de-cide to selflessly serve any and every-body’s children. Maintaining a second full-time job in order to pay back stu-dent loans is already an embedded fac-tor as the student plans and prepares for this career of grandeur.

It is true for most educators that hav-ing a burning desire to teach, especially in the public school, is not merely a de-

cision. It is a commitment. It is a higher spiritual calling and its

pay is greater than anything of tangibil-ity. So do not think something as secular as a paycheck (or the lack of) will de-ter an appointed teacher from fulfilling their will.

When one is truly called to teach they do not mind a $325.95 salary (three packs of 21 cent Roman Noodles for a whole year and a nice pair of Stacy Ad-ams shoes).

We then move closer to defining the right to a free education as teachers teach kids for free. We progress toward making the school a living quarters for the educators, require all teachers to get a commercial driver’s license to ac-commodate having to buy a personal vehicle, and the only time I would want to receive higher pay is when the De-partment/Board of Education further

We live in the United States, land of the free, home of the brave,

historical trendsetter to all things demo-cratic. We liked democracy before it was cool. You know, back when it was still un-derground.

I’m sure we’ve all heard the story of the Boston Tea Party countless times since el-ementary school. And I’m also sure we’ve all spent several hours memorizing the specific injustices that led the founding fathers to rebel against the British. (Hon-estly, who didn’t expect have that essay question on the first U.S. history test.)

The Founding Fathers believed in the merits of democracy and a citizens’ right to elect his or her leaders, and while this idea seemed radical at the time, democ-racy spread as a result of their insubor-dination.

Since then, the United States has con-tinued to unabashedly blaze the trail for democracy to proliferate, standing as the Protector against socialism, fascism, communism and all those other danger-ous isms that rear their ugly heads against sweet Lady Liberty.

Democracy is the cornerstone on which this nation was built, and Ameri-cans have never been afraid to take the first step when it comes to promoting a citizen’s right to choose.

A shining example of this comes from the brave state of Tennessee, which seeks to make this country more free and dem-ocratic than some even thought possible, taking the gospel of democracy to the one place where it currently has no power: science.

Tennessee House Bill 368 and Senate Bill 893 seek to redefine the way in which scientific information is disseminated, encouraging teachers to address the, “sci-entific strengths and scientific weakness-es” of topics like “biological evolution, the chemical origins of life, global warming, and human cloning”.

This decision comes as victory for citi-zens of Tennessee because it means they can move past the accepted precedent and hear both sides of the story.

Even though the scientific community believes there is little to debate about these “controversial” issues, I’m still glad that the state of Tennessee takes their words with a bit of skepticism.

After all, as Senator Santorum put so aptly, college graduates have the bad habit of becoming elitists, and we all know that we can’t really trust them and their overly liberal, socialist, communist, agenda.

marginalizes how and what we teachers teach.

It is these middle-class hungry teach-ers who are responsible for the thou-sands who got laid off last year (1,100 just in Alabama). They are also the ones who complain when a low vision or mild-ly mentally handicapped kid is incorpo-rated into their “traditional classroom” (a nice way to phrase “existing oppres-sion”) These teachers are the ones who are ruining the macrocosm of public ed-ucation. There needs to be a separation between the martyrs for enlightenment from the I-have-summers-off-and-I-re-ceive-tenure-so-clean-my-teeth teach-ers. I believe taking money and luxuries out of the equation is a great start.

Did Socrates demand gold for his ad-vice in the Agora? Did Paul or Silas de-mand money for preaching the gospel? Did Kevorkian charge for euthanasia? What makes these men incredible fig-ures is that they were blessed with the insight for the greater good, and they were great at what they did. It is with the same attitude that the abecedary toler-ates all he does to help ensure a better future for all.

Why are you running for this position?

I am running for the position of Chief Justice be-cause I am seek-ing a better op-portunity to make a difference on campus. I want to ensure that ev-ery student gets a

chance to make their voice heard and ensure that all policies and protocols are properly followed in executing the decisions made by SGA.

Is there a parking problem on campus? Why or why not?

There is a parking problem on cam-pus, mostly due to the fact that more and more commuter students are at-tending the university, but no accom-modations are being made to provide adequate parking for them. However, students must also realize that it is not the job of the university to provide them with a front row parking spot to all of their classes. Often, there are empty parking spots available, but they are away from academic build-ings.

Are you Greek? If so, state your affiliation.

I am not a member of a Greek orga-nization.

What is wrong with SGA?SGA lacks the strong leadership

that is necessary to make the organiza-tion work effectively. There is a break down in communication between the members and leaders of SGA.

What is right with SGA?There are several members of SGA

who are dedicated to making the or-ganization better. These members are working hard to increase the visibility on campus and make students more aware of what SGA can do for them.

Which is more important; be-ing a student or being an officer?

As I stated in response to an ear-lier question, we are all, first and fore-most, students. My primary reason for being at this university is to gain a quality education; therefore I say it is more important to be a student.

How important is transparen-cy in SGA on a scale of 1 – 10?

I would say the level of importance of transparency in the SGA is a 7.

Why is transparency impor-

JuniorBiomedical SciencesUnaffiliated

kacie Watson: Running for Chief Justicetant or not important to you?

It is important to me that SGA re-main transparent because, ultimately, this is an organization for the students and it is only right that the students know what is going on within their SGA. However, I do understand that situations arise that require the at-tention of SGA and is not necessarily something that should be brought to the student body’s attention.

What is your favorite thing about USA?

I love the size of USA and the fact that it is continuously growing. There are constantly new buildings going up and improvements being made to campus. Although the construction is not always something students enjoy seeing, it is necessary for the growth of our university.

What is your least favorite thing about USA?

I would have to say that my least favorite thing about the university is the level of security on campus. While I know that campus police cannot be everywhere at once, I believe it is im-portant to have more police patrolling the university, especially during times and in areas where more crimes tend to occur.

Why should the Vanguard sup-port you?

The Vanguard should support me for Chief Justice because I am com-mitted to SGA and to this University. I hope to bring improvements to ev-erything that I do and always hope to leave things better than I found them and this is no different for SGA. I hope to really make a difference by serving as the Chief Justice of SGA and make the University of South Alabama a better place than it was when I began my freshmen year here.

Why are you running for this position?

I am running for College of Arts and Sciences Senate because I feel that I will be able to connect with my peers on campus. I will be able to help make decisions based on my peers’ wants and needs. Also, I will make a difference among the lives of my peers and provide leadership.

Is there a parking problem on campus? Why or why not?

I do feel that there is a parking problem on campus. I feel that stu-dents should be able to park where they need and want to on campus. There is also limited parking in the designated zones.

What would your first senate project be if you had $1000?

To host a “Pizza for Thought”. This would offer an incentive for the students to come out and provide their suggestions for enhancing the experience of students at USA. Once I know what the students concerns are, I will be able to address them with the remaining money.

Are you Greek? If so, state you affiliation.

No

What is wrong with SGA?An issue that I see is the lack of

a minority presence. This lack of minority presence is not a complete representation of the student body.

What is right with SGA?SGA provides the university with

great social events. These events are a way for students to feel involved on campus.

Which is more important; being a student or a senator?

I take my role and responsibili-ties as a student very serious; how-ever, I am my “Brother’s Keeper.” Therefore, as a senator I can have an impact on the lives of others as well as myself.

How important is transpar-ency in SGA on a scale of 1-10?

8; because students need to feel a sense of involvement.

Why is transparency impor-tant or not important to you?

It is important because I am for the students feeling as if they are a part of this organization, as they are.

My favorite thing about USA is the connec-tion that I feel with my peers and campus fac-ulty. The 2 years I have been here, I have felt like I have became a part of this uni-versity.

What is your least favorite thing about USA?

My least favorite thing about USA is the activities and events planned on campus lack the ability to draw the attention of the majority of the student body.

As senator, how will you help represent your college?

As a senator of SGA, I will rep-resent USA through teamwork with fellow members of SGA to accom-plish the common goals of the stu-dent body.

As senator, how will you in-

As a senator, I will utilize both social networking and face-to-face communication to stay connected with the student body.

Which is more important; being a student or a senator?

Definitely being a student is more im-portant that any of my extracurricular ac-tivities that I am involved in. That does not mean that I will not give the position the dedication it deserves.

How important is transparency in SGA on a scale of 1-10?

I place much importance on the trans-parency of SGA. To fairly represent the stu-

dent body, transparency must be upheld.

Why is transparency important or not important to you?

The students should know exactly what is going on with their elected representa-tives at all times. But at the same time elect a candidate that they can trust to make the right decisions.

What is your favorite thing about USA?

My favorite thing about USA is the growth and expansion, from the football team and all the new buildings. It shows me that USA is on an exciting path.

What is your least favorite thing about USA?

My least favorite thing about USA is that people from the outside view it as a commuter school, and it is much more than that.

Why are you running for this position?

Over the past year, I have been a Peer Academic Leader forfresh-men with Dr. Ni-cole Carr. I was also involved this year in the SGA creation of First

Is there a parking problem on this campus? Why or why not?

I believe there is an issue in the East parking zone. While most other parking zones have turnover through-out the day, most of East parking is devoted to medical students and do not have a similar turnover rate.

What would be your first Sen-ate project be if you had $1000?

the Senate, I would like to see more hands-on activity in the Senate, such as community service. Many of our positions revolve around appropria-tions, but I want more physical events for the Senate to become involved with. I also feel that we need to improve our internal and external com-munication.

What is right with SGA?

We are priv-ileged to ap-propriate mon-ey to deserving student orga-nizations. It is rewarding to see the faces of group lead-ers after they learn a finan-cial burden has been lifted off their shoulders!

Which is more important: be-ing a student or a senator?

Student, because being a good and able student gets you to graduation

and a qualified Senator position. In order to lead, you must have a strong student foundation.

How important is transparen-cy in SGA on a scale from 1-10?

8. We represent the voice of the students, but similar to actual Con-gress, there are some times for pri-vate deliberations.

Why is t r a n s p a r -ency impor-tant or not important to you?

T r a n s p a r -ency is impor-tant in SGA not only be-cause we rep-resent our con-stituents, but we deal with large sums of money. It is important for us to remain honest in our appropriations

processes.

What is your favorite thing about USA?

All the new construction that is de-veloping! It will surely bring in new students!

What is your least favorite thing about USA?

Muggy and hot weather. While that may be a complaint about Mobile in general, it does stink to walk to class in this weather.

As a Senator, how will you help represent your college?

The best way to represent your col-lege is to carefully consider each vote you make. It is very easy to make a vote based on your own opinion, but one must remember that you are rep-resenting your college, not yourself.

As a Senator, how will you in-teract with students in your col-lege?

As a part of the new SGA website, I think it will be important to include the contact information for each sen-ator. This will empower students, and I believe it is necessary to be open and accessible to your constituents in this technology age.

Is there a parking problem on cam-pus? Why or why not?

Yes, there is a major parking problem on campus. There should be more general park-ing areas where everyone can park, especially around the cafeteria. I find that a place where everyone should be able to park regardless of your parking zone. I think even some sort of parking garage could help fix the problem.

I would invest the money in signs and maybe even a direction booth that would help students and visitors on campus know where they are on campus if they were lost. They would also be able to get directions to their next class or where ever they needed to go.

Are you Greek? If so, state your affili-ation.

Yes, I am affiliated with the Greek system at South. I am a active member of Phi Mu Frater-nity.

What is wrong with the sga?The only thing I can think of that’s wrong

with the sga is they do not do enough to get all the students on campus involved. There are a lot of commuter students that attend South Alabama and they are not very involved on campus. I feel like the sga should at least make an effort to have events for everyone to attend.

What is right with the sga?The sga does a great job giving money to the

other clubs and organizations on campus. They really try to help everyone and they do listen to the students ideas and problems.

Which is more important: being a student or a senator?

Being a student is more important to me than being a senator because at the end of the day the whole reason we are in college is to learn and go to school.

How important is transparency in SGA on a scale of 1-10?

Transparency is a 7 for me.

Why is transparency important or not important to you?

Transparency is important because i want people to understand me readily and easily, However, i would not want to be too transpar-ent and give people an opportunity to see right through me and take advantage. Transparency is an important characteristic to have as long as it does not become a weakness.

What is your favorite thing about USA?

I love being involved on campus and having many different clubs or organizations to get in-volvedin. I also enjoy all the sporting events for all students to attend

What is your least favorite thing about USA?

I think my least favorite thing about USA is that we do not have a football stadium on or around campus. Ithink once a football stadium is built here, the student body as a whole will become more involved and have more school spirit than what there is now.

As senator, how will you help repre-sent your college?

I think i could help represent the College of Business with my leadership qualities because one huge major in the College of Business is management. I’m also very outgoing and I

would listen to all suggestions or opinions given to me.

As senator, how will you interact with students in your college?

I would interact with the students of the Col-lege of Business by getting involved in a club that would benefit my interest in management and marketing.

Why are you running for this position?

I am running for the position of Student-at-Large to increase the amount of support SGA gives to student organizations. I want to work along-side other student organizations to get more of our student

body involved on campus. There are so many re-sources other than funding that SGA can provide for our students. I will make it the focus of my office to ensure that SGA is providing aid for or-ganizations seeking to increase membership or to network with other organizations. I also will work toward creating a Student Organization Seating Program for organizations to have seat-ing at University sporting events.

Is there a parking problem on cam-pus? Why or why not?

It is apparent that there is a parking problem on our campus, as parking seems to be one of the first criticisms students have about the Univer-sity. This problem may never be fully resolved, as it seems to be a common theme across many college campuses, but that does not excuse SGA from working to improve parking for students. I will be open to any ideas that students have to

Alex Wiles: Running for Student-At-Largeimportant to you?

The Student Government assembles for one main goal – to serve the Student Body. The most effective way to ensure our SGA is truly serving all students is to make every decision of SGA as transparent as possible. This means more Van-guard coverage. I feel as though Senators should have regular meetings with writers of the Van-guard to discuss plans for Senator Projects and to answer frequently asked questions proposed by students.

What is your favorite thing about USA?

The growth our campus has seen just since my first year in Fall the of 2009 is incredible. I love that I am a student here during this period in our University history. There are so many reasons to be proud of our campus such as the beginning of our football team.

What is your least favorite thing about USA?

My least favorite thing about the University is that so many of our students only view the Uni-versity as their school and nothing more. There are so many ways to become involved, whether it is in student organizations, participating in campus events, or supporting sporting events. It is SGA’s responsibility to reach out to these stu-dents and find the right ways to increase pride in our University.

Why should the Vanguard support

improve our parking issues on campus.

What is wrong with SGA?Since joining SGA, the largest problem I have

seen for our student government is attendance issues. When senators miss meetings, it portrays a poor image of the SGA to those students in at-tendance. The responsibilities of representing our student body cannot be neglected. I feel as though the attendance records of both our Offi-cers and Senators should be made more public to students, perhaps by publishing semester at-tendance in the Vanguard. Not only would stu-dents see the effort put in by SGA, but this could also create more incentive for those members of SGA who fulfill their obligations every week.

Which is more important; being a stu-dent or an officer?

While the responsibilities of being an officer are very important, the only reason that any of us are enrolled here at all is to be students. The key to being a good officer is to understand that we are all students first and to use our positions to work for our fellow students.

How important is transparency in SGA on a scale of 1-10?

Transparency is one of the most important qualities that a Student Government should have.

Why is transparency important or not

you?I am running for a position that represents

not just one college, but the entire student body. I have been involved in several organizations during my time at South Alabama and would be able to relate with any student, which is key to being successful as the Student-at-Large. I am a Southerner (Student Ambassador) for the past two years, served as an SGA Senator, Associate Justice and Recruitment Chair, and play on the USA Rugby Team. My involvement with several different types of organizations would enable me to achieve my largest goal of increasing student involvement in everything South Alabama

Why are you running for this position?

I filled an open position last semes-ter on SGA and since then I have loved be-ing a senator. I enjoy being involved on campus and doing things to benefit oth-ers and this puts me right in the middle of

it all.

Is there a parking problem on cam-pus? Why or why not?

Parking is a big issue no matter where you go on campus. I feel that there is a lack of adequate parking spaces/lots allotted for the number of students at South. Areas such as the cafeteria (Greek and Delta), Central, and Gamma (not excluding other areas of con-cern) would greatly benefit from an increase in parking spots.

What would your first senate proj-ect be if you had $1,000?

I think a great project to look into would be the safety poles that bigger universities have on their campuses. While this project may call for more than an allotted $1,000, I think it would be a good idea to start some-where with this.

Are you Greek? If so, state your af-filiation.

Yes, I am a member of Phi Mu.

What is wrong with SGA?Personally, I do not see anything “wrong”

with our SGA. Many people may believe that there isn’t enough involvement or commu-nication with other students, but all of those discrepancies can easily be resolved. I think our student government is comprised of a great group of young men and women that want the best for our campus.

What is right with SGA?Our SGA includes a great diversity of

students that do their best to represent and serve the student body. Serving as a senator for this past year, I was able to experience first hand the hard work and dedication that everyone on SGA puts forth to make this as-sociation work. SGA is made up of individu-als that bring everything they have to the ta-ble in order to better our campus experience.

Which is more important; being a student or being a senator?

In my opinion, being a student is more important than being a senator. Being a ded-icated student is one of the most important things for one’s future. Besides that, without the experience as a student, I would have nothing to bring to the table for the position of a senator.

Meghan Hadley: Running for College of Arts and Sciences Senate

SophomorePsychologyPhi Mu

How important is transparency in SGA on a scale of 1-10?

10.

Why is transparency important or not important to you?

I believe it is crucial for the success of both SGA and the student body for the senate to be open and honest with our students. It is important that the student body be aware of the issues at hand and where SGA stands with those issues.

What is your favorite thing about USA?

I love all of the campus activities that stu-dents are able to get involved in. I enjoy par-ticipating in intramurals, being active in my sorority, and participating in other events such as football, homecoming, and the bake sales that different organizations hold on campus.

What is your least favorite thing about USA?

I would probably have to say the cafeteria food... I really miss my mom’s homemade cooking!

As senator, how will you help rep-resent your college (i.e. Arts and Sci-ences, Engineering)?

I’ll do my best to communicate with the dean and other students in the College of Arts and Sciences to find projects that could benefit my college and the students in it.

As senator, how will you interact with students in your college?

When I hear people talking about SGA, I like to take the chance to introduce myself and say that I’m currently involved and join in on their conversations. I could branch out by introducing myself to different students and asking their opinions on things that they believe SGA could improve.

Why are you running for this position?

I am running for this position to be able to influence my college and the stu-dent body as whole. SGA is a good way for me to get more evolved with our campus and a way for me to be able

to address the issues students may have. Helping people has always been my main concern.

Is there a parking problem on Campus?

Since my arrival at the University of South Alabama parking has become less of a problem. Parking service have done a good job in organizing the parking lot and parking section , but if there is any prob-lems with parking it would be that there is not enough room. The university has got-ten larger every year sense my freshman year which explains why the parking lots are always filled to their capacity.

What would your first senate project be if you had $1000?

A project I would like to work on would be to improve the lighting around campus. These improvements would help students become more aware of their surrounding, which would also increase security around the campus.

What is wrong with SGA?There is nothing wrong with SGA.

What is right with SGA?SGA has been able to influences many

different organizes by being able to sup-port and help them with the projects they wish to accomplish. SGA has also helped students by allowing them to report things they may feel that the campus is not do-ing correctly or thing that the campus may need to improve on.

Which is more important: being a student or a senator?

Being student is more important be-cause students are the ones that determine the atmosphere of the university.

How important is transparency in SGA on a scale of 1-10?

It would be a 10.

Why is Transparency important or not important to you?

Transparency is important for SGA because students should have the right to know what their SGA is doing and to know if they are making a difference on campus. This helps build trust between the student body and the SGA.

What is your favorite thing about USA?

It would have to be how South Alabama has grown and how it is still growing and how we are progressing to being one of the best schools in the south.

What is your least favorite thing about USA?

I enjoy everything about the University of South Alabama and I do not have a least favorite thing.

As senator, how will you help rep-resent you college?

I will represent my college by making the students of the College of Arts and Sci-ence more aware of how important SGA is to student body and how SGA can have a positive influence on campus.

Why are you running for this position?

I am running for this position because I feel that I would be a great representative for the College of Al-lied Health and I want to be apart of the deci-sion making on cam-pus. I feel that I could make improvements

and be a valuable asset to the Student Govern-ment Association on campus.

Is there a parking problem on cam-pus? Why or why not?

Yes, I believe there is definitely a parking problem on campus. I live at Stokes Hall and of-ten times I am not able to find parking near my building. I have also found that if I try to go any-where on campus during a popular time, like the rec center or cafeteria, I am usually better off walking because there isn’t parking close by.

What would your first senate project be if you had $1000?

I would survey the students and the de-partment to see what they would like changed or improved for the College of Allied Health. I would also like to plan a community event that would benefit an organization in Mobile, while giving the students and the department a chance to serve and give back to Mobile.

Are you Greek? If so, state your affili-ation.

Yes - Chi Omega

What is wrong with SGA?I think that SGA could be more open and

communicate more to the students about their agenda and what is going on around campus. I think that SGA should try to be present at all the important decision making meetings on campus and if the students voice their concern about an issue, SGA should speak up for the students.

What is right with SGA?I think SGA does a great job with events such

as Homecoming and Appropriations. I really enjoyed the Homecoming events this year and I think SGA is very organized when it comes to appropriations for all the clubs.

Which is more important; being a student or being a senator?

I think being a student is more important, however they are intertwined. Without stu-dents there would be no need for senators. I believe that it takes a motivated student to serve as a senator.

How important is transparency in SGA on a scale of 1-10?

10 - Very important

Rachel Howorth: Running for College of Allied Health Senator

SophomoreBiomedicalChi Omega

Why is transparency important or not important to you?

Transparency is very important. Students need to know what is going on around campus and the decisions that SGA is making. Without transparency, I think that you would lose a lot of student and club involvement on campus be-cause students and clubs would feel unimport-ant and not needed.

What is your favorite thing about USA?

My favorite thing is the sense of community that USA has and how easy it is to get involved at USA. I like knowing that the professors rec-ognize me and are willing to communicate with a student if they are having problems.

What is your least favorite thing about USA?

My least favorite thing about USA is the amount of meal plans that are required for a student living on campus. I think that the amount of meal plans that a Freshman and Sophomore are required to have should be low-ered, especially now that the Student Center is an option.

As senator, how will you represent your college?

I will represent my college by being pres-ent for all meetings and being organized and efficient about getting things done. I would be available to communicate with the students of Allied Health and the department about any problems they are having and be prepared to address them.

As senator, how will you interact with students in your college?

As a senator, I would make my contact in-formation easily accessible to the students in my college. I would also survey the students about what they like and what they would like to see changed.

Why are you running for this posi-tion?

I feel that I am the most qualified and able person for the position of Chief Justice. My experience this past Fall and Spring as Asso-ciate Justice (and on multiple occasions Ad Hoc Chief Justice) has given me invaluable insight into the University Disciplinary Com-mittee and the SGA. On top of the knowledge of the system, I also was exposed to the prob-lems in the UDC that restrict student rights; this WILL be reconciled if I’m given the op-portunity to serve. Remember: “ To save your rights from neglect, you must elect!”

Is there a parking problem on cam-pus?

To put it simply yes. However, there is a parking problem at the pentagon too. I feel like if those guys can’t figure it out we cer-tainly won’t. Follow the rules and get to class 5 minutes early and there will always be a spot. I can honestly say that I have never not found a parking space on campus...even if it was in Timbuktu.

Are you Greek?Yes I am a member of Tau Kappa Epsilon.

What is wrong with SGA?Nothing. Electing the right people makes

a good SGA. Elect people who don’t know what they are doing or just want the title and resume bullet then the organization goes downhill.

What is right with SGA?Similar to above, it really doesn’t matter

what is good or bad about our current SGA. The thing that should be focused on is our current candidates and how they can better serve the student body. The SGA changes every year... whether for the better or worse depends on how informed the student body is when casting their votes.

Which is more important; being a student or office?

I will be completely honest: I am in col-lege to graduate, not be on SGA. Being a student is more important to me. However, since being an officer is an appointment by students like myself I see them as one in the same. An officer is simply and extension of many student voices’ to relay their thoughts to the student government.

How important is transparency in the SGA?

I would say a 7. Some complain that it should be completely transparent and I agree. However, there are times when it is not appropriate for the media or student body to be privy to SGA proceedings. In a situation where senators are asked to vote on an impeachment case or on any other con-troversial issue giving them privacy creates a

more unbiased envi-ronment where they do not have to worry about judgment from their peers. It allows them to make the right choice, the choice that the vot-ing students gave them the right to make.

Why is trans-parency important or not important?

It is not one or the other. Nearly all of the situations that the SGA deals with need to be transparent and made available to the student body. However, again, there are times when it is good to have closed voting or closed sessions in order to give the sena-tors and officers privacy from ridicule. Its the same reason that we do not vote in front of accused students in the UDC. It allows us to vote with a level head and analyze all of the facts without worry of being persecuted by our peers.

What is you fav thing about USA?I would have to say the student recreation

center. It rocks my socks, no one can deny.

What is your least favorite thing about USA?

I wish more student were academically concerned. It would make the university look better, as well as everyone who holds a de-gree from USA.

Why should the Vanguard support me?

I am the most qualified for my position, it is as simple as that. I promise that my in-tentions are to protect the students and give them a fair judging hand and not to protect the SGA or even be pushed over by over-bearing faculty and administration. It is you guys that I care about, not how it will look on paper. As I said earlier: “To save your rights from neglect, you must elect!!!!!!”

William Pearson: Running for TreasurerWhy are you

running for this position?

The SGA Treasurer plays a huge part in helping student orga-nizations financially, and I feel that I am the most qualified and experienced candidate to benefit the student body in that aspect. The Treasurer also

plays a vital role working with the other execu-tive officers to turn ideas into reality. I will work closely with the other officers and senators to make sure that this is a productive year for SGA.

Is there a parking problem on cam-pus? Why or why not?

Parking is a huge problem at South, similar to most major universities around the country, and at the rate that our University is growing, it will continue to be a problem. Do I have the answer to the parking problem? No, but I do think that fixing the smaller problems will have a more immediate effect than continuing to lobby for a parking garage that is not currently a viable solution . As an officer, I will gladly be a part of a parking committee to brainstorm ideas to find solutions. However, it will not be the main focus of my term as Treasurer.

Are you Greek? If so, state your affili-ation.

Yes, I am a brother of Tau Kappa Epsi-lon.

What is wrong with SGA? SGA has not had a strong presence

around campus the past couple of years and this continues to be the central problem that the or-ganization is currently facing. By electing officers and senators that have proven experience, we will be able to bring SGA to the level that it needs to be. The potential has always been there, but it will be the students’ votes that determine the effectiveness of the organization.

What is right with SGA? The Student Government Association

has always, and will continue to aid student orga-nizations financially. The appropriation of funds allows students to host events, attend conferenc-es, and promote their organizations. If elected, I will do all that I can to make the appropriation and co-sponsorship process as stress-free as pos-sible for the students, as well as SGA.

Which is more important; being a stu-dent or an officer?

Education comes first. After all, that is the reason we are here. Though, being a stu-dent should not get in the way of being an of-ficer. A candidate with good time management skills and experience balancing classwork and a couple jobs, will be more than capable of being a successful officer.

How important is transparency in

JuniorBusiness Finance/Eco-nomicsTau Kappa Epsilon

SGA on a scale of 1-10? With 10 being the most important,

and 1 being the least important, transparency in SGA is a solid 10.

Why is transparency important or not important to you?

S i m p l y put, transparency enables YOU to easily research and hold your elected officials account-able for how they spend YOUR stu-dent fees. As trea-surer, I will pro-vide charts and/or graphs after the last budget meet-ing each semester, that will show the student body what a portion of their student fees are be-ing allocated for. The STUDENT Government association needs to be as open as possible.

What is your favorite thing about

USA? Being able to watch a University grow

so much over such a short period of time is a privilege that most college students do not get the opportunity to experience. The administra-tion is revamping the campus even more, and

more students from across the country are choos-ing to call the Uni-versity of South Al-abama their home. This is a great time to be a Jaguar!

What is your least favorite thing about USA?

S t u -dent involvement has not always been the best here at South, but it is improving. With the addition of a football program

and the creation of new student organizations, we are starting to see more growth. SGA needs to be at the front leading the students to get in-volved!

Why should The Vanguard support you?

The student body should support me based on my credentials. I have two years ex-perience on SGA, and have gained experience through being a committee chair and through completing Senate projects such as the improve-ments made to the Doctor Glenn Sebastian Na-ture Trail. During my two terms, I learned the re-quirements of being treasurer and am the most qualified candidate for the job. With the student body’s support, I will do all that I can to make sure this is a great year for SGA and for the Uni-versity of South Alabama. Go Jags!

Why are you running for this position?

I am running for the office of Chief Justice because of my motivation as part of the student body to see our university flourish and grow in way that is beneficial to students, faculty, staff, and the Mobile

community. As Chief Justice I would preside over the Student Supreme Court and the Uni-versity Traffic and Parking Committee. In doing so, it would be my responsibility to protect the rights of the students on this campus. I would serve this position well because of my innate ability to remain entirely objective about mat-ters regarding rules and rights.

Is there a parking problem on cam-pus? Why or why not?

Yes. There is a parking problem on campus. I believe, however, the biggest parking problem on campus does not affect the majority of com-muter students but residential students. While parking is growing problem on campus during the day, parking in residential areas, especially, in the evening has not only become a greater problem but also a safety hazard. With the opening of Stokes Hall, the number of residents has outgrown the capacity of residential park-ing. This has caused safety hazards for some students, because it leaves students parking, at times, significant distances away from their re-spective residential hallways.

Are you Greek? If so, state your affili-ation.

experience serving as Freshman-at-Large for the 2010-2011 academic year and a College of Engineering Senator, as well as Legal Affairs Committee Chair, for the 2011-2012 academic year. My affiliation does not change my ability to serve the students of the University of South Alabama. As a current senator, and Chief Jus-tice candidate, my goal is to serve the student body as whole regardless of my Greek affilia-tion.

What is wrong with SGA?SGA, for a significant amount of time, has

seemed to have a bad connotation to it. While SGA, as a whole, strives to serve the student body in the most efficient and effective way pos-sible, every organization has its flaws and SGA is no exception. SGA has times when it deviates away from its primary purpose of serving the students and gets distracted by personal feel-ings and beliefs and forgets that we serve as constituents for the student body. Sometimes, we, as a collective whole, find ourselves being subjective about matters that we should be be-ing objective about.

What is right with SGA?While SGA may have its flaws, it does an in-

credible amount of beneficial work for the stu-dent body and for the campus as well. The ben-efit that the majority of students take advantage of is appropriations. We serve to appropriate money to student groups based on need and rules defined in the USA Lowdown. One thing that is also right with SGA is the structure. We are a structured group with a regular agenda. We take the concerns brought to us as senators and bring them to the table to discuss how, we as SGA, can provide assistance.

Which is more important; being a student or an officer?

I do not feel that the two can be compared in regards to importance. We are all here for a common goal: higher education. Being an offi-

cer personally is important to me, but I feel that in order to be an effective and efficient leader, you have to be a student. I do not mean being strictly enrolled in classes, I mean being a stu-dent in a more holistic sense. I feel that you have to be comfortable and confident enough in your ability and competence as a student before you can be an effective leader to your peers.

How important is transparency in SGA on a scale of 1-10?

On a scale of 1-10, I believe that transpar-ency on SGA is a 7. I chose 7, because, while transparency is incredibly important, in order to be effective there has to be behind the scenes work in order to keep the group running as a whole just as in every student organization or affiliation.

Why is transparency important to you or not?

Transparency, especially on SGA, is impor-tant because we serve the student body. If we keep the student body in the dark, how ben-eficial can we be as ambassadors to the admin-istration and community? We are here as an open organization made up of students for the student body to serve the student body. I feel that if there is little to no transparency, we can-not effectively serve our purpose.

What is your favorite thing about USA?

My favorite thing about USA is the South Alabama family. Whether you are a student, a faculty or staff member, administrator, or visi-tor, there is the familial feeling here. I feel like we, as a collective group, are a community and family for each other. South’s campus has a tre-mendously welcoming feel to it. Whether walk-ing to class or studying in the library or going to a faculty member’s office hours, there is just something about the warm welcoming smiles here that you do not find on many college cam-puses.

What is your least favorite thing about USA?

My least favorite thing about USA is limited library hours. As a student, like the majority of my peers, I have a busy schedule between class, work, organizational commitments, and other involvements, I find that by the time I am able to sit down to study, the library is closed or near closing time. I feel as though the library should be open later to accommodate students who may have schedules that only allow for late eve-ning studying because I feel that they should be able to have the opportunity to use the resourc-es provided by the university libraries.

Why should the Vanguard support you?

I feel that the Vanguard should either sup-port every candidate or no candidate. I believe this because the Vanguard should serve as an unbiased factual based source for the students. The Vanguard has proven to the student body to be a source of reliable information reporting things such as SGA elections and should remain unbiased.

Why are you running for this position?

I am running because there is far more work to be done to improve student life. Students need a strong, experienced leader who will truly represent the interest of the students. I have

the knowledge and ability to represent the best interests of every student.

Is there a parking problem on cam-pus? Why or Why not?

I certainly believe there is a major park-ing problem. The number of buildings has in-creased by five over the past several years, but the number of parking spots has seen little to no increase to make up for the additional demand. There is plenty of room to add more parking, yet we are not taking advantage of it! Addition-ally, faculty and staff should not be allowed to park in student spaces, just like students are not allowed to park in faculty/staff spaces.

What would your first senate project be if you had $1,000?

Several people have approached me with complaints about the wireless internet (Wi-Fi) in their dorm rooms. Internet access is a must for any college student to be successful in this day and age. My project would consist of a re-evaluation of the signal strength and band-width of the current Wi-Fi infrastructure and its pitfalls in meeting the current demands. In the end, we will eventually overhaul the Wi-Fi

networks to meet the needs of an ever-growing student and resident population.

Are you Greek? If so, state your affili-ation.

No, I do not belong to any Greek organiza-tion. I do belong to several other organizations, including the Student Government Association and various other committees within SGA.

What is wrong with SGA?I believe there are many things the SGA

could improve on. The SGA needs to assume a more active role in student life. As a senator, the only time I’ve seen more than 10 people at our meetings is during appropriations. The SGA must do a better job representing the students to our administration. The calendar fiasco is proof that we are falling short of accomplishing this. Third, the SGA needs to improve commu-nication between itself and the students. Some Students have no idea what SGA even does. These are just a few things that could use im-provement.

What is right with SGA?I believe the SGA has made great strides in

streamlining the appropriations process. Addi-tionally, SGA was essential in the addition of fall break to our calendar (kudos to former presi-dent Kim Proctor for making that a reality)! SGA also stresses its commitment to improving student life by creating and sponsoring various senate projects aimed at various campus im-provements and philanthropy projects.

Which is more important; being a student or senator?

Senators must also be students. In real-

ity, being a student representative means that many people are counting on you, which is an extremely heavy burden to carry. The short an-swer is, being a senator takes greater priority.

How important is transparency in SGA on a scale of 1-10?

Transparency is not only important; it is an expectation of those we elect to represent us. So that would make it an 11.

Why is transparency important or not important to you?

It is important for those we hold account-able for our general welfare to be open and hon-est with us, even when they make a mistake. As a senator, I have been, and will continue to be, open and honest about what I am and will be doing in the SGA.

What is your favorite thing about USA?

This list could go on and on. I really like the way USA has a low student-to-teacher ratio, en-abling a more personal-level education. I also like a lot of the new initiatives and programs that USA has designed and implemented to en-hance the college experience.

What is your least favorite thing about USA?

The way the administration seems to at-tempt to implement controversial changes without first asking the students’ opinion on the matter really upsets me. For example, the destruction of the English department’s mural and the changes to spring break were both initi-ated without first asking students.

As a senator, how will you help repre-sent your college?

Attendance at meetings, as well as asking questions of the members of my college will be how I plan to represent the interests of my con-stituents.

As a senator, how will you interact with students in your college?

This is an area I need to improve upon. I plan to attend more meetings of the Association of Computers and Machinery, which consists of a lot of members of the college. I also plan to be around the ACM’s office on a regular basis, and keep scheduled office hours.

Taurus: 4/20 – 5/20You’re lucky numbers are 17, 24 and 28. These will also be the grades on your last three tests of the semester, and they’re all out of 100. Gemini: 5/21 – 6/21The stars have predicted that all female Gemini will start growing facial hair by the next full moon. All males will suffer from an extreme case of balding.

Cancer: 6/22 – 7/22Congress has recently passed a new bill that caused this upcoming Wednesday to be na-tional “Ride your Bike Naked” day. USAPD has all ready been informed and are on the lookout for all non-praticipanting law-breakers.

Leo: 7/23 – 8/22If you know how to take my iPhone off of automatic repeat, please contact The Vanguard. I’ve been listening to the same song for about 35 minutes.

Libra: 9/23 – 10/22Please tell all Leos that their services are no longer needed for the iPhone issue men-tioned above, it has been resolved. The power of double-tapping the screen is a great thing.

Scorpio: 10/23 – 11/21Your mail-ordered bride from Russia will arrive this week via Fedex. I would strongly encourage you not to open the box she came in, the Russians forgot to make airholes for her...

Sagittarius: 11/22 – 12/21This week, you’ll go to a party at a friend’s house. There will be a girl eye-stalking you there that’s hidious. Eight beers, three vod-ka shots and 16 hours later you’ll wake up handcuffed to the bed to fi nd out “she” has a very defi ned jawline and a little... extra baggage on “her”.

Capricorn: 12/22 – 1/19Watch out for unicorns chewing through your network cables on Sunday. Gnomes sleep in on Sundays, so they’re going to be innocent this one time.

Aquarius: 1/20 – 2/18It’s a good idea to sell your car for a horse with gas prices going up. A horse operates on low emissions, and you can park your horse in a grassy patch, and he auto-refi lls on fuel. If you’re looking for an SUV re-placement, wagons are available in black, white or brown with the option of a tan or white removable cowhide canvas roof.

Pisces: 2/19 – 3/20Avoid eating marshmallows at any social event with a group of four to fi ve guys. You’ll wake up missing a fi nger in the Ad-ministration building’s elevator. It’s going to be hard to explain that one to your mom.
