It is hard to believe that almost four years have

passed since you embarked on the unique path

as the inaugural class to live and learn in The

Commons. Through your enthusiastic engagement,

you created and nurtured close friendships, set

new paradigms for mentorships, and redefined

the meaning of community at this great university.

Much has happened throughout these past

few years. Carefully considering causes and

issues that stirred your passion, you have

demonstrated your values and defended

principles of great importance. Your participation

in Vanderbilt’s community introduced

possibilities that would have never existed

without you, and I am pleased to have this opportunity to thank you for the

meaningful ways in which you have contributed to our university family.

As you have discovered, the full potential of a Vanderbilt education is realized in

relationships. Learning takes place in our interactions and how we choose to respond

to humanity. Thanks to your Vanderbilt experience, you will view the world through a

lens that values opportunity, challenge, and the perspectives of others.

I feel fortunate to have been a part of these special years in your life. Seeing you prepare

for Commencement fills me with great hope for our world’s future. As young alumni,

you will continue to bring distinction to this university, and I look forward to celebrating

the many ways that you will carry forward this sense of community to contribute to the

betterment of our greater society.

As part of our Commencement tradition, Vanderbilt hosts a big outdoor dance whose simple name says it all: THE PARTY. With live entertainment and a huge dance floor, it is the quintessential evening of fun and celebration under the stars…for everyone!

The featured band this year will be Liquid Blue, one of the hippest, hottest pop rock dance bands in the U.S. Campus favorites Soul Incision will kick off the celebration.

Wear your dancing shoes and be prepared for an unforgettable evening.

THE PARTY will be Wednesday, May 9, from 9:00 p.m. to midnight on The Commons Center Lawn, rain or shine.

The Nichols-Chancellor’s Medal is one of the university’s highest honors and is given to individuals who define the 21st century and exemplify the best qualities of the human spirit. It was created and endowed by Vanderbilt Law School graduate Edward C. Nichols Jr. and his wife, Janice, in honor of his parents, Edward Carmack Nichols and Lucile Hamby Nichols. The medal is presented annually at Vanderbilt’s Senior Class Day and carries a cash prize. The 2012 Nichols-Chancellor’s Medal award recipient and Senior Class Day speaker is Tom Brokaw.

From the turmoil of the Vietnam War and the fall of the Berlin Wall to the war zones of Iraq and Afghanistan and the hallowed ground of Normandy where he interviewed President Obama during the anniversary commemoration of D-Day, Brokaw has the journalistic acumen and global experience to help us make sense of the complex stories of our times.

Brokaw enlightens audiences with his observations on the state of the U.S. and the world, providing unmatched analysis on the important political headlines, economic challenges, and social issues in the news and the people behind the headlines. Known and beloved for his landmark work in American journalism and his New York Times bestsellers which include Boom! and The Greatest Generation, Brokaw now turns his attention to the challenges that face America in the new millennium and offers reflections on how we can restore America’s greatness in his new book, The Time of Our Lives: A Conversation About America.

Memorial Gym, where Senior Class Day will be held, is not air conditioned—wear comfortable clothes in the event of unusually warm weather.

Attendees with special needs and requiring the use of a wheelchair will have priority seating on the south side of the gym. Wheelchair pick-up will be located on the corner of Jess Neely Drive and 25th Avenue South (same corner as the baseball field and across from 25th Avenue Garage).

TOM BROKAWThe Voice of a GenerationMay 10, 2012, 11 a.m.

In 1797, Joseph Haydn completed what was immediately hailed as his greatest work, The Creation. This enormous piece scored for solo singers, chorus, and orchestra opens with nothing short of a musical impossibility—the sound of infinite nothingness. What follows would seem another nonstarter, especially given the elegance, balance, and sym-metry of late eighteenth-century musical style—the Representation of Chaos. This talk explores the aesthetics of the impossible in Haydn’s most sublime work.

Melanie Lowe is associate professor of musicology and chair of the Department of Musicology and Ethnomusicology at Vanderbilt University’s Blair School of Music. A scholar of eighteenth-century mu-sic, Lowe is also widely published on music in American media, classical recording, and “tween” pop culture.

Why College? Education and Citizenshipin Modern America2:00–3:00 p.m., 103 Wilson Hall

Creating Chaos in Haydn’s The Creation2:00–3:00 p.m., 126 Wilson Hall

College produces good citizens, right? Yes, but not for the reasons most people think. This talk will explore the role of higher education in defining changing meanings of democratic citizenship in the twentieth century, and explain why coordinated efforts to use education to produce good citizens and to remake society during that century rarely worked as intended. As we shall see, the real genius of American higher education has been—and remains—its utter unpredictability.

Christopher P. Loss is an assistant professor of education in Peabody College of Vanderbilt University. A historian of the twentieth-century United States, Loss specializes in the intellectual, political, and social history of U.S. higher education.

Robots are becoming increasingly valuable surgical devices, enabling physicians to reach into the body less invasively and treat diseases more accurately than has ever before been possible. This talk will cover several examples of novel surgical robots, ranging from “tentacle-like” robots that are the diameter of needles for endonasal surgery, to swallowable endoscopic capsule robots that can accomplish surgery in the intestines, making the “fantastic voyage” foreseen by Isaac Asimov a reality.

Robert J. Webster III, assistant pro-fessor of mechanical engineering, has published more than sixty peer-reviewed papers in the areas of sur-gical robotics and medical device design, and is a recipient of the IEEE Volz award for Ph.D. thesis impact, and the National Science Foundation CAREER Award.

Re-engineering Surgery:The Rise of Robots in the Operating Room3:15–4:15 p.m., 103 Wilson Hall

Privacy has become a flashpoint of contemporary American life. But it would be a mistake to treat “privacy” as an abstraction, unmoored by time, circumstance, and place. This talk investigates one of the key terms of U.S. political culture, charting the diverse ways privacy has emerged as a public concern across the twentieth century. Precisely because privacy has been billed as a personal possession, outside the domain of the state or politics, its history offers an illuminating window onto the social strains of modern citizenship.

Sarah E. Igo teaches and writes about modern American cultural and intellectual history. Her first book, The Averaged American, explores the relationship between survey data—opinion polls, sex surveys, consumer research—and modern understandings of self and nation. Igo also founded and co-directs the National Forum on the Future of Liberal Education.

Pick-up location: Barnes & Noble at Vanderbilt (2525 West End Ave. across from Centennial Park)

Hours: Wednesday, 8:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m. and Thursday, 8:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m.

Seating

Since seating is open, we kindly ask that seats not be saved by any means other than someone sitting in the seat. If you bring balloons, ribbons, bags, etc., to attach to chairs in an attempt to save multiple seats, a faculty marshal or other member of the Commencement staff will ask you to remove them. A large video screen is set up behind the main stage to make viewing the ceremony easy for everyone on the lawn. Indoor seating: Sarratt Cinema, Neely Auditorium, and the Old Gym will be open to view the ceremony live for those sensitive to the heat and sun.

While on campus during Commencement if you or a guest need special assistance please call Disability Services at 615-322-4705.

Photography

Official photographers will take individual photos of each graduate shaking hands with the chancellor or their dean (for graduate and professional schools). Proofs of these photos will be sent to the parent’s or student’s permanent address along with information about ordering prints.

Parking & Transportation

Parking is available at the 25th Avenue Garage, Kensington Garage, Terrace Place Garage, and Wesley Place Garage for those attending THE PARTY on Wednesday, Senior Class Day events on Thursday, and Commencement on Friday.

Remember, if you need disability assistance, you can either visit the Commencement website and make your request or call Disability Services at (615) 322-4705 (V/TDD).

Shuttle buses will be available on all three days from the vari-ous garages listed above. Shuttles will begin service up to two hours before the event is scheduled to begin.

Severe Weather

In the event of intense rain or severe weather, the events taking place on Alumni Lawn will be moved to Memorial Gymnasium on 25th Avenue South. Please note that Memorial Gym is not air-conditioned. Layered clothing is a good strategy for guests and participants.

If the weather is uncertain and you are unsure of the location of the event, check vanderbilt.edu/commencement, call the Vanderbilt telephone operators at (615) 322-7311 after 6:00 a.m. on the morning of the event, or sign up for text alerts beforehand to be personally contacted of any changes.
