New vicar at Holy Trinity Church
‘Fall seven times, stand up eight’. (Japanese Proverb)
This term, we have been thinking about the school value of ‘Life-long Learning’, and in particular about
the value of Perseverance. The children have been learning about ‘How to keep going against all the odds’,
‘Doing the right thing’, ‘Meeting a personal challenge’, and ‘Encouraging others to keep going when things
get really tough’. They have been encouraged to reflect about situations in their own lives (and in those of
others), when the ability to apply perseverance was tested. They have also been encouraged to respond to
their learning, by thinking about how they can apply the lessons they have learnt to their own lives. We
have been challenging children to persist when things are tough, and to appreciate the gratification that
comes from something that was ‘hard won’; to take a real pride in succeeding when it would have been
much easier to give up. “When the world says, ‘Give up’, Hope whispers, ‘Try it one more time.” (Anon)
There has been much to celebrate this half term, in all aspects of school life. The children have made good
progress in their learning and have been enjoying their topics. Many of the children have been awarded
with House points and certificates for their excellent work, and for exhibiting superb learning behaviours,
including many children awarded for showing the school value of ‘Life-long Learning’ and demonstrating
perseverance. The House point system has proved to be very successful – it is lovely to see the children
completing their House point cards and coming to collect the tokens and certificates. They are so proud of
their achievements, and it is a joy to celebrate these with them.
The kitchen staff should also be applauded for achieving another 5 rating from Environmental Health at
their ‘no notice’ inspection. The kitchen team do a superb job, and thanks go especially to Miss Bull and
Mrs Page.
Wishing you all a happy (and germ-free) half term!

Message from our Headteacher, Fiona Daykin
We are delighted that The Reverend Canon Andrew Gough has been appointed as Vicar at Holy Trinity Church with St Nicholas, Weymouth.
This means that he will be joining our school community and joining our Governance Board.
Everyone is invited to come and join the special ordination service that will be held at Holy Trinity Church on Monday 3 April, 7.00pm at Holy Trinity Church.
Theme for this half term:

Council
column
The School Council recently met with two of our governors, Mrs
Keedy and Mrs Newstead. They were pleased to share news with
the governors that they had met with Mr Neil Revell, who visited
our school recently. Mr Revell asked School Council members
about what religious things are done in school. They told him that
they pray every day, listen to Bible stories and light candles.
The School Council used a powerpoint presentation to explain the
questions that they were asked by Mr Revell. They explained that
each class have Reflection Journals that contain deep thoughts
about what has been learnt in Year and Class assemblies.
After working hard with attendance for KS2 pupils,
Mrs Ludlow has launched the 'Under the Sea' Attendance
race chart for KS1. Each class enters the race on a weekly
basis and has the chance to win the treasure chest at the
end of the month. The chest includes stationery, stickers, a
class wide certificate and a special treat; a voucher for
home clothes for a day. KS2 have embraced their version
which is the Friday Surprise Box and the pupils are excited
to be recognised for their good attendance and its
importance to their education.
Good attendance is a Life-Long Learning essential for every
child’s future in school and employment.
We are delighted at the success of our After School Club which has
been welcomed by working parents and those who have been
delayed getting to school on time to collect their children. If you do
not collect your child from school within 10 minutes of the end of
school (3.10pm for Years R, 1, & 2 and 3.25pm for Years N, 3, 4, 5 & 6)
he/she will automatically be taken to our After School Club and you
will be charged for the time they are cared for. We have been
pleased with how many parents have been grateful to be reassured
that their child is cared for in a safe environment at a time when they
have been unavoidably delayed.

House points earned so far this term are:
St Andrew St George St David St Patrick Total
3500 3550 3575 3825 14450
This term alone, has seen our children awarded with 14,450
House points before half term. “We are very excited to see
who wins the half termly prize” said a Year 3 pupil from St
George House as he collected his 125 House points,
certificate and red coloured, team coin. With 1 week to go
before half term, the scores were quite tight and any House
could win it. There was a late surge from St Patrick but at
the end of the last week the coins given out were primarily
red, blue and yellow.
There will be a final count up of House points and the
winning team will be announced when the children come
back after the half term break. Who will the winner be?

Lovely quote from a Year 2 pupil
“When you are happy you have
people to play with which makes
you have a warm happy feeling
inside”
Year 1 have been learning the story 'The Three Little
Pigs' and performed the story with songs and music to
their parents/carers. The children also designed houses
for the pigs, and parents/carers were invited into the
classrooms to help the children build the houses. The
children really enjoyed the afternoon and the adults
looked as though they did too! Thank you to all the adults
who participated- there are some fantastic creations and
we are looking forward to seeing which houses survive
the wolf's huffing and puffing!
Our Year 5 and 6 girls football team won the recent
Weymouth and Portland Schools Football Tournament, so
they have qualified for the Dorset County Finals. They
were among the top 9 teams for their age in Dorset, which
is a fantastic achievement! Well done!
Year 4 stayed at New Barn Centre and
experienced life as a Viking! With so
many activities to enjoy, everyone
worked in harmony and had a great
learning time and was exhausted on
their return to school!
Year 1
Reception
Look at these amazing works of art painted by each of our
Reception classes. Following our school value of Faith, they
learnt the story in the Bible that Jesus told about what
happened to the house built on the rock by the wise man and
the house built on the sand by the foolish man.
In school we use the International Children’s Bible and you can

Governors
One of the strategic aims set by the Governors this year is to celebrate the Christian distinctiveness of
the school. In order to support this aim, our Governors have continued to observe Collective Worship
both by Key Stage and by class. We have reviewed a sample of Reflection Diaries and were
overwhelmed by the children's comments. A review of our school in terms of social, moral, spiritual
and cultural development has been written by Governors and is now available on the website under
“Our Church School”. We continue to work alongside our advisers from the Diocese of Salisbury in
ensuring we support our Christian Foundation.
A lot of parents have got upset when their child’s coat has been lost and they realise that it
will be difficult to confirm that it belongs to their child as it didn’t have a name on.
PLEASE put your child’s name on all uniform and other items that are brought to school—
we can then return them to the right person if they get lost.
You can help the school earn money through an
easy funding site. If you are buying anything
online, please go via easyfundraising.org.uk
then access the company's website that you need
through this and the school can earn money that
we can spend on resources for our pupils.
Zoggs Oceans of Fun Day - Sunday 12 February

Travel to and from school
It is extremely busy at the start and end of each school day and Cross Road is difficult to
park in at those times. We ask that all parents respect the neighbours in our community
and do not park across drives or in private parking areas of blocks of flats or Chipmunks.
Please be aware that owners of these private parking areas are entitled to take car
number plates and report to the police those who park illegally. If you need to travel by
car, please consider parking in a road a little distance away from the school and walking
the remaining part of the journey.
