Festivals and Twentieth Century America ...

Is there really any significance to living in a Sukkah (booth) anymore? Do we really need to take the afternoon and build a sukkah? We are not farmers, how isn't it too remote an experience to celebrate the harvest when we can get most fruits and vegetables all year long? Shouldn't we just celebrate the good price of peaches found now?

Of course Sukkot and all of our festivals are still relevant, but the point is well taken that we are challenged to find the relevance given that original assumptions for the holidays are no longer as compelling. There is much for which to be thankful, so Sukkot as a Thanksgiving festival is certainly appropriate. While you probably don't need to build and decorate a sukkah-it sure can be a good time. Coming to Services to mark the changing of the season is also a meaningful thing to do.

Imagine the scene in our home. If the Talmud does not prohibit Jews with power tools, it should! When I erect our Sukkah each year, those under 21 are not allowed to participate due to the language the rabbi utters as he attempts to construct the sukkah. Our children have been known to ask Nancy whether they are safe even watching from the window. But builder's rage turns to a sense of sanctity after the finish product is displayed (especially when it's stable enough to enter).

Simchat Torah is also a wonderful festival, for it celebrates our connection to our Torah. While I must tell you I have

2

some issues regarding the near ido 1-worship some people seem to create when dancing and kissing the Torah, the tremendous celebration and joy that comes with the holiday overshadows my reservations. Simchat Torah is not just a time to welcome consecrants to our religious school, it is a true multigenerational celebration, and I hope you will all make one of our services.

We are adding some morning Festival worship services in order to give us extra opportunities to mark our time Jewisbly. While the Torah prohibits work on these festivals as it does for Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, I do live in this world. We are offering early services in case some of you need to dash off to work following the service. Surely some of you who want to be with us for the morning services can arrange the schedule so that you are a little late that morning.

The Torah commands us to mark the time, and we command each other to mark the time meaningfully. Let us help!

Have a great month.
