    Principal’s Message

I’ve arrived back from a nice month in Europe to find the school moving along at full speed while I’m still stumbling along with jetlag. I’d like to thank Mrs Pearson for once again managing the school beautifully in my absence. We are lucky to have a cohesive staff that work together wonderfully and have the skills necessary to keep Beresford Road running smoothly in all circumstances.

I am really looking forward to the Art in the Dark tomorrow night. It is great to have the opportunity to showcase students’ work in the Creative Arts field. Every student in the school will have a piece of art in the exhibition and the evening will also have performances from our dance and choir groups. Please make the time to visit the Art in the Dark exhibition on Wednesday night (5pm – 8pm) and help us celebrate the creative talents of our students. More information and a timetable of events are located in this newsletter. I’d like to thank Mrs Leverett and her planning committee for all their work leading up to this event.

I am pleased to see the XO computers up and running in most classes. After our trial last term in 3/4P and 1G we decided that this level of access to technology would benefit all classes so the decision was made to jump in and purchase one for every student and teacher. Cover the nose and mouth with a tissue when coughing or sneezing. Throw the tissue in the garbage bin after use.

Wash hands often with soap and water, especially after coughing or sneezing. Alcohol-based hands cleaners are also effective.

Avoid touching eyes, nose or mouth. Germs spread thatway.

If you or your child develops influenza-like illness, seek the advice off your family doctor as you would with any other illness. ATHLETICS CARNIVAL

Two weeks ago we held our annual athletics carnival at CV

Kelly Park in Girraween. The venue was a new one for

BRPS with a grass track which a lot of students were

unfamiliar running on. The day ended being a huge

success and I must thank the Girraween Little Athletics

Club for allowing us to use their venue and for the support

    of our school sporting program.

In particular, I would like to thank Jo and Karen Farrugia

and Shandelle Tautz who are members of the executive

team of Girraween Little Athletics Club, for assisting me

with setting up the ground and for running the canteen on

the day. I would also like to thank all the parents who

gave up their valuable time to assist myself and the teach-

ers in running the carnival and for the parents who came

along to cheer on their children.

Days like these are huge community events for schools

and the support of the local community is very much

appreciated by our school Beresford Road.

There was an outstanding individual performance on the

day with a long standing school record broken:

Teagan Neich – 11yrs Girls Shot Put – threw a new

record of 9.44m beating the old record of

    K. Dawson (1997) by 66cms. Congratulations

    Teagan on an outstanding result.

    ZONE ATHLETICS

The ZONE athletics teams have been selected and students

are reminded to check the notice boards to see if they have

been chosen in the BRPS team. If students have been

selected they need to see Mr Wicks to receive the

permission note to attend the upcoming Seven Hills/

Wentworthville carnival which will be held on:

Tuesday 26th August @ Blacktown Olympic Park,

    Doonside

    ATHLETICS RIBBONS

The final results have been worked out and the BRPS Zone

Athletics team has been finalised and athletics ribbons will

be given out at Week 4’s Primary Friday Assembly.

    CONGRATULATIONS to Mitchell Hagan

Congratulations to Mitchell Hagan from 2/3E who recently

    competed in the 2014 NSW/ACT/QLD Inter-schools

Snowsports Championships in the ski fields of Thredbo.

Mitchell competed in the downhill skiing event against 108

other competitors and finished in 50th place, which is an

outstanding effort considering we don’t have any snow in

    Western Sydney.

Mitchell tells me that for next year he is going to compete in

the snowboarding events and we wish him all the best and

further success in his winter sport endeavours.

    CONGRATULATIONS to Timana Mikaere

Congratulations to Timana Mikaere from 5/6D who recently

competed in the 2014 NSW Opens Rugby League

Championships in Kingscliff. Timana was part of a very strong

Sydney West team that managed to remain undefeated

throughout the championships and was crowned State

    Champions.

Timana was part of history with not only the Opens Sydney

West team winning the NSW title but also the 11’s winning

the championships a few weeks earlier at Cronulla, which I

was part of as the team manager/trainer. This hasn’t been

achieved for a very long time in Rugby League at school boy

level and is something very special.

Timana is also part of the Sydney West Rugby Union team

which will compete in the NSW Championships in Kiama

from the 19 – 21st August and we wish him well for the

    tournament.

Kids Matter Rule of the Week

Week 4 – Strive for Excellence – I am prepared

    Week 5 – Participate – I have a go

As part of our Kids Matter survey, parents have shown an

interest in having a parent information area. We have begun

to facilitate this by organising a notice board and pamphlet

wall in the library foyer. Please feel free to come and have a

look and suggest any that are of interest you may want

included on our community wall. Thanks again to the

    parents who completed the survey.

    Mrs Akhurst on leave

Mrs Akhurst will be on leave in week 4,5 and 6. Mrs Pannucci

will be taking her place. Mrs Akhurst will be returning to

    school on Wednesday 27th August

    Home readers

The new home reading scheme is working well. Remember

that for students to improve their fluency and vocabulary,

they should read each book at least twice. The first time they

may stumble on a few words or phrases and the second time

they remember. It is even better, if you can stand it, for

them to read it 3 or more times, not necessarily on the same

    night.

Please make sure you record the books your child reads or

they may get the same book again. If they lose it, ask the

    teacher for another one.

If you can spare 10 minutes after morning lines to help

change them, the parents there could always do with help.

Yr 5/6 CANBERRA SNOWY EXCURSION FINAL

    PAYMENTS

There is only a few weeks left till the FINAL PAYMENT for

the Year 5/6 Canberra/Snowy trip is due by Thursday 21st

August, 2014 as per the original payment schedule.

Failure to pay the FINAL PAYMENT by the due date of

Thursday 21st August could jeopardise your child’s place on

the excursion and their spot may be given to other students

who are on the waiting list.

    SRC News

There will be a P&C Meeting held in the office staffroom at

    7:30 tonight.

    Helpers Wanted!

We need parents to help pack fruit and vegies for

our school community every Tuesday at 12:00pm.

Beresford Road Public School has taken the initiative

to start Harvest Hub. Every Tuesday at midday a

delivery of fresh fruit gets delivered to our school.

We currently have 10 teachers that are members and

receive a bag of fresh produce each week. Before we

can offer this wonderful program to the families at

our school we will require parent helpers to pack the

    produce.

If you can help, please contact Mrs Leverett or leave

your name and number with the office ladies.

Driving and parking safely near the school

School opening and closing hours are busy times for

pedestrian and vehicular traffic outside the school.

Always take extra care in 40km/h school zones,

which operate on gazetted school days.

  • The Buzz- Term 3- Week 4 Tuesday 5th August 2014

Well, 5/6D have had a very exciting start to Term 3 with the introduction of many new

resources to the classroom. The roll out of the XO computers has begun and we were one

of the first classes to discover just how much these lap tops can support our learning.

Students have started using their XOs during

literacy groups to revise their spelling words

and research reading and writing topics. They

    can reinforce new mathematical concepts

introduced in class by accessing mathematical

websites including: Cool Maths Games, IXL

and Studyladder. Those students who do not

have access to the internet at home have been

keen to take the XOs to the library at

lunchtime and complete set homework activities that they have had trouble accessing in

the past. There are a range of applications on the XO that support students work in class

including the Journal which allows them to type up notes and save them for later use or

the Graphing app which allows students to create a range of relevant graphs to display

and interpret the data they collect during mathematics, just to name a few.

In reading, students have been using the Classic Literature Reading Sets which are

produced in three different levels to meet student’s individual needs. 5/D have already

been introduced to a range of classics you may be familiar with including ‘The Wizard

of Oz’, ‘Little Women’ and ‘Robinson Crusoe’. These cards contain extracts from the

classics and are exposing children to different types of writing. They are accompanied by

discussion points and activity sheets designed to develop comprehension skills and are

leaving many students keen to borrow these classics from the library so they can read

the whole story. We have also been using the the Macmillan English Writing

Prompts to guide our writing in class. These prompts are

allowing students to become involved in ‘rich tasks’ which

teach them to follow an enquiry-based model of learning.

This provides opportunities for students to learn large

amounts of new content, whilst developing important skills

and encouraging inter-disciplinary learning. And yes, they

    are enjoying it!

  • The Buzz- Term 3- Week 4 Tuesday 5th August 2014

We have had a very busy start to the term with our annual Athletics carnival and preparation for the Art in the Dark creative arts spectacular planned for tomorrow night. Please come along and see how your child has experimented with different media this year to create a range of unique artworks.

Vietnam Students worked with clay to create a set of wind chimes. When travelling through remote Vietnamese villages, it is very common to see wind chimes made from wood or clay as a decorative element in front of houses. The key feature of traditional Vietnamese wind chimes is that the top is made from different, unique shapes.

Electricity Again we used different techniques and media includ-ing layering and attaching wool to create an artwork that depicted a typical urban landscape in New South Wales which highlighted ‘electricity’. Students found

gluing the ‘electrical wires’ in place quite challenging but were very proud of their final artworks.

Black and White Winter Collage Students used media, (strips of newspaper) to create this collage of a winter landscape taking particular care to incorporate different shades of grey, white and black.
