Key Words: Retelling Story, Reading Comprehension
Reading is an important aspect in language learning. By reading, we can
convey information and ideas. Reading skill is the ability to read including about
the understanding of meaning and also message, which implied in the reading
text. The students are expected to be able to use English both oral and written
communication. In fact, many students have difficulties in reading English. The
students are passive in the teaching and learning process of reading, the students
don’t have any idea or initiative to read, or when they have ideas, they don’t know
how to express the ideas. It’s due to the lack of vocabulary, lack of understanding
of grammatical patterns, and lack of practicing English reading. Based on the fact,
the writer thinks that it would be better using retelling story to solve this problem.
Retelling Story is the activity to retell the story or event again in own language. Its
make process of teaching and learning more fun and comfort to the students. The
writer is interested in using retelling story because this technique is easy to
practice.
The objective of this research is to find out whether or not there is a
significant difference between the reading ability of the eleventh grade students of
MA Miftahut Thullab Cengkalsewu Sukolilo Pati in the academic year 2012/2013
before and after being taught by using retelling story.
Experimental design is design, of this research, use one group pre-test
post-test. The population is the eleventh grade students of MA Miftahut Thullab
Cengkalsewu Sukolilo Pati in the academic year 2012/2013. The writer chooses
XI as experiment. The number of sample is 30 students. The writer used a test as
instrument of the research. The test is multiple choice and essay consist of 20
items. The result of this research shows that there is a significant difference
between reading ability of the eleventh grade students of MA Miftahut Thullab
Cengkalsewu Sukolilo Pati in the academic year 2012/2013 before and after being
taught by using retelling story, it is presented with the t-test (to) = 17.84 > t-table
(tt)= 2.05. It indicates that alternative hypothesis that there is significant difference
between reading ability of the eleventh grade students of MA Miftahut Thullab
Cengkalsewu Sukolilo Pati in the academic year 2012/2013 before and after being
taught by using retelling story is confirmed. Therefore, the writer suggest that it
would be better for the teacher to apply retelling story as effective technique to
teach reading, because it can improve reading skill for the students.

ABSTRAKSI
Choironi, Aniq Alfa. 2013. Menceritakan kembali Cerita Untuk Mengajar
Pemahaman Membaca Pada Kelas XI MA Miftahut Thullab Cengkalsewu
Sukolilo Pati Tahun Akademik 2012/2013 Skripsi. Program Studi
Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris, Fakultas Keguruan dan Ilmu Pendidikan,
Universitas Muria Kudus. Dosen Pembimbing: (i) Ahdi Riyono, S.S,
M.Hum. (ii) Atik Rokhayani, S.Pd, M.Pd.
Key Words: Menceritakan kembali Cerita, Pemahaman membaca
Membaca merupakan aspek penting dalam pembelajaran bahasa. Dengan
membaca, kita dapat mengungkapkan informasi dan ide. Pemahaman membaca
group pre-test post-test. Populasinya adalah kelas XI MA Miftahut Thullab
Cengkalsewu Sukolilo Pati tahun akademik 2012/2013. Penulis memilih kelas XI
sebagai kelas eksperimen. Jumlah sample 30 siswa. Penulis menggunakan tes
sebagai alat penelitian. Bentuk tes yaitu pilihan ganda dan uraian yang berjumlah
20 soal. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa ada perbedaan antara kemampuan
membaca siswa kelas XI MA Miftahut Thullab Cengkalsewu Sukolilo Pati tahun
