Welcome from the Dean I'm delighted that you are here and look forward to getting to know you. You're joining a community that is diverse, enthusiastic, dedicated, highly skilled, and kind. It is wonderful to have your talents among us. This book should help you get started and make the most of our many resources. When questions arise, please feel free to reach out to any member of our team for help, including me. On behalf of the entire community, welcome to Berkeley Law! Sincerely,

Erwin Chemerinsky Dean, UC Berkeley School of Law

About this Guide This is a crowd-sourced chunk of information designed to help you get started at work and navigate the first few months. It includes information about the Berkeley culture, how to get stuff done, what you can do for fun around here, where to turn for help, and more. These resources come from your colleagues, including members of units like Human Resources, Event Services, Communications, the Business Office, the Dean’s Office, the Faculty Support Unit, the Library, and more. Individuals weighed in with their advice, tips, and strategies for success and wellbeing at work. We can’t say it’s absolutely exhaustive, but we hope it’s a good start. Of course, the best resources of all are your colleagues themselves—there are many people here who are happy to help you learn, and their knowledge can never be reduced to a handbook. On the other hand, this is a busy place and it can’t hurt to have something you can return to at your own pace when you have questions. Welcome to Berkeley Law!

• Can you email the community introducing me as a new member of the team? • Outside of our team, who should I be sure to meet early on? • How do I get business cards? • What sort of orientation activities do you recommend I do?

Navigating the Law School buildings

Boalt Hall is the main law school building and all other law buildings are connected to it. (Berkeley Law is considering whether to stop using the name “Boalt.” Read more about this here.) Simon Hall is the tall building on the corner of Piedmont and Bancroft. The North Addition is attached to the north side of Boalt Hall. The South Addition is the newest part of the building, and includes the library and Cafe Zeb.

Room numbers in Boalt Hall are often listed just as numbers, while rooms in the other buildings often include that building’s name. (For example, a classroom in Boalt Hall might be listed simply as “Room 110” and the same room in another building would be “Room 110, Simon” or “Room 110, North Addition.” That’s one way to avoid getting lost! Another is to travel with breadcrumbs.) Always leave extra time to get where you’re going, at least in the beginning.

How do I refer to Berkeley Law with other groups? What’s our “brand”?

Our official name is the University of California, Berkeley, School of Law. With external audiences, we use our name in full or in one of the two abbreviated forms: UC Berkeley School of Law or Berkeley Law. (The Berkeley Law graphic identity consists of a family of logos representing the school and its affiliates, plus corresponding suites of materials for correspondence, presentation, and other purposes. Units are not permitted to develop logos or graphics standards outside the Berkeley Law identity system.)

Does my job come with any perks?

Of course! Check out this website for a list of places where you can get useful discounts as a member of the UC community: https://hr.berkeley.edu/compensation-benefits/perks.

How do I get information about the non-obvious benefits and resources/advice available to me? Like things related to child-care, elder care, free counseling, managing stress, work/life balance, etc.

Check out this website, https://www.law.berkeley.edu/human-resources/, compiled by our Human Resources team. It contains a wealth of information! In particular, the drop-down options on the right take you deeper in the resources.

How do I call for help in an emergency?

Call 911 and/or campus police at 652-3333 (that line is for emergencies only). It’s not a bad idea to put the campus police emergency number in your cell phone.

I have a question that’s not on here and no one seems to know the answer. What do I do?

If you’ve tried asking your supervisor, contacting HR, and emailing [email protected] without success, try reaching out to someone who has been here forever!

What if I need to email a group of colleagues, like “all staff” or “all lecturers”?

Check out this website to see the current Berkeley Law listservs: https://www.law.berkeley.edu/administration/email/.

Anything else? Yes - this website: https://www.law.berkeley.edu/for-faculty-staff/. It has links to all kinds of resources (the academic calendar, academic personnel policies, teaching resources, and more.)

Some Resources to Know about if Problems Arise Human Resources HR is available to assist you if problems arise with your colleagues. Additional options include the Ombuds Office, the Climate Committee, the Staff Equity Advisor, the Faculty Equity Advisor, or your supervisor. Campus Police In an emergency, dial 911 or call 642-3333, the campus police emergency line. You can also reach the campus police in non-emergent situations by calling 510-642-6760. It’s a good idea to have these numbers in your phone. Catastrophic Leave Sharing This program allows employees to voluntarily and anonymously provide assistance to co-workers on leave by donating vacation hours. You might use it if you need to take a leave before your vacation/sick hours have accrued. For example, you start January 1st, and end up needing to take half of February off with pneumonia. If you find yourself in this situation, talk to your supervisor and/or a member of the Human Resources team. You can find more information about this program by clicking this link: http://hr.berkeley.edu/policies/leaves/catastrophic Sexual Harassment and Violence There is far more information about preventing and responding to sexual harassment and violence than can be summarized here. As a start, please take a moment to visit http://survivorsupport.berkeley.edu/ and explore the resources. One thing, however, is worth mentioning right away: UC has a Path to Care office that provides confidential counseling (often with same-day appointments) to people who have experienced sexual harassment and/or violence. Here is Path to Care’s website: http://sa.berkeley.edu/dean/confidential-care-advocate. It can be reached, day or night, by calling 642-1988. Disputes The Ombuds Offices provide confidential guidance on resolving disputes. Communications to the Ombuds offices do not place the University “on notice.” Ombuds officers help people think through their options and help devise strategies to de-escalate and resolve conflict in an impartial manner.

• The Student Ombuds Office serves Undergraduates, Graduate students, and Postdocs. • The Staff Ombuds Office serves Staff, Non-Senate academics, and Faculty who perform

management functions, including Deans, Chairs, and Directors (unfortunately, not all faculty can be directly served; many faculty-faculty conflicts are handled by the Academic Senate).

Counseling (free and confidential) Employee Assistance is the university’s assistance program providing free, confidential problem assessment and referrals for UC Berkeley faculty and staff. Please contact Employee Assistance at 643-7754 to set up an appointment.

How is the University of California structured?

The UC System employs more than 190,000 faculty and staff members, who work with more than 238,000 students.

The Board of Regents is the governing body for the University of California system. Individual Regents serve as trustees for the people of the State of California and as stewards for the University of California, governing the University as a public trust in fulfillment of its educational, research, and public service missions in the best interests of the people of California.

The Board of Regents oversees the University of California Office of the President (currently held by Janet Napolitano). That office oversees various positions that address issues relevant to all 10 UC campuses (Berkeley, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Santa Barbara, Riverside, Davis, San Diego, Santa Cruz, Irvine, and Merced), 5 medical centers (Davis, Irvine, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and San Diego) and 3 affiliated national laboratories (Lawrence Berkeley, Lawrence Livermore, and Los Alamos), and a statewide agriculture and natural resource program. UCOP’s organizational chart can be found here.
