1. INTRODUCTION OF NEW HONOURS SPECIALISATIONS FROM 2017

Members were asked to consider the proposals for the offering of the following end-on honours specialisations. Members were encouraged to consider the proposals in light of the honours specialisation development criteria and the University Policy on: Courses – Undergraduate.

Due to the limited number of level 4 units appropriate for honours students, the Faculty had requested an exemption to this requirement for 2017 only.

4. UNIT PROPOSED FOR OFFERING AS BROADENING CATEGORY A FROM 2017

Members were advised that the University Policy on: Courses - Undergraduate identified five groupings for Category A broadening units, including units which have ‘mathematics and/or statistical theory as [their] core teaching content’. The Committee was asked to consider the change proposal to recognise the following existing unit as Broadening Category A:

5. SERVICE LEARNING UNITS FOR UWA STUDENT GUILD OFFICE BEARERS FOR 2017

Members noted that the above units were proposed to enable students who were incumbent Guild office bearers to enrol in a unit for academic credit in recognition of their service contribution to the Guild and the University.

Members had before them an extract of the minutes of the Curriculum Committee on 9 November 2016, where these units were discussed and members requested clarification regarding the points value, sequencing, levels, learning outcomes and assessments for the units. The proposer had revised the units in light of this feedback, noting:

Students were intended to take one unit in Semester 1 and the second unit in Semester 2. The unit descriptions had been updated to show that the workload in each semester is equivalent to the 150 hours required for a normal 6 point unit.

The outcomes had been revised to address the concerns raised by the Committee. The Level 1 units had been changed to Level 2 as suggested.

The assessment rubrics would be similar to those used by the McCusker Centre for Citizenship. The units had been updated to include additional information demonstrating that the learning

would be more than incidental due to a number of factors, including:

(a) a three and a half day leadership program in which all students would participate;(b) a self reflection report/presentation that would be assessed by the unit coordinator;

(c) a service learning duty statement that would be created for each student that outlines the commitment from the organisation, the position purpose, the key duties/accountabilities and the competencies required;

(d) a Heads of agreement document signed by both UWA and the Guild that would outline the obligations of UWA and the Guild including the nomination of a Guild supervisor who would provide students with an induction and learning experiences with regard to the operations of the Guild and would provide adequate and proper supervision and instructions in relation to the tasks that the students would perform as part of their placement; and

(e) a service learning placement agreement signed by the student that outlined their obligations including meeting regularly with their academic supervisor and the agency supervisor.

6. INTRODUCTION OF NEW POSTGRADUATE COURSEWORK COURSE FOR OFFERING FROM SEMESTER 2, 2017

Members were asked to consider the Phase 2 detailed proposal for the offering of the following new course. Members were encouraged to consider the proposal in light of the Phase 2 curriculum development criteria and the University Policy on: Courses – Postgraduate Coursework.

7. UWA CURRICULUM MANAGEMENT: SUMMARY REPORT OF UWA CURRICULUM FOR 2017– REF: F71207

The University of Western Australia has a curriculum in line with the world’s top universities with a focus on research, communication skills and creative and critical thinking.

Each year, the University undergoes a comprehensive curriculum change process that involves all faculties modifying and improving the curriculum to ensure our students receive the very best education. This process involves the development and modification of new and existing courses and units and the rescission of courses and units that are no longer needed. Many changes are approved by delegated authority, while new proposals and more significant changes are considered by the Curriculum Committee and Academic Council, where relevant.

Curriculum Management had developed a consolidated summary of UWA Curriculum for 2017, containing:

summary statistics for curriculum and the curriculum management processes in 2016; and

lists of curriculum items which will be offered in 2017 or which have been rescinded from 2017.

Members were advised that the report was available online.
