PART II – ITEMS FOR DECISION TO BE DEALT WITH EN BLOC

No Items.

PART III – ITEMS FOR DECISION 8. BEST PRACTICES FOR MARKING MODERATION The Chair notes that some teaching staff are asking for guidance on marking moderation procedures. Unit Coordinators should ensure that marking rubrics are prepared for all assessment items and shared with Sessional Staff during their teaching team meetings, well in advance of the designated marking periods. Marking moderation is to be undertaken by the Unit Coordinator, selecting a range of assignments from each Sessional Staff for consistency across the unit. If need be, the Unit Coordinator can advise the Sessional Staff markers to remark assignments based on the evidence gained from the moderation. Recommendation: For discussion. 9. PROPOSED CURRICULUM CHANGES FOR APPROVAL Members are asked to consider amending the prerequisite for level 3 units from the IKHH major from INDG2300 to any level 2 unit from the IKHH major. This would serve to increase enrolments in level 3 units and will bring the major into line with changes likely to result from the Review of New Courses. Recommendation: That this committee endorses the proposed changes to the prerequisites for units INDG3300, INDG3400, INDG3600, INDG3700 from INDG2300 to any level 2 unit from the IKHH major. 10. IKHH MAJOR TO BE OFFERED TO ALBANY STUDENTS SIS has offered 4 units from the major in Albany this year, and the Director of the Albany Centre has subsequently received a number of student requests for the entire major to be made available to the Albany cohort. SIS and Albany staff met recently to draft up a plan to offer the major to Albany from 2016. Albany would cover the costs of complimentary field trips and SIS approved tutors, and lectures would be recorded. Desirably, unit coordinators (UCs) would be invited to travel to Albany for the day (with Albany covering the cost of flights) to deliver a lecture and tutorial in person. UCs in charge of more than 1 unit could stay in Albany overnight to have one day per unit. The use of Blackboard’s ‘Collaborate’ feature could also be used to link up student learning groups between Crawley and Albany. The Chair also notes that the selection and management of Albany teaching staff will need further discussion and clarification, as noted in our previous T & L meeting. Attached is the aforementioned draft plan for rolling out the major for the Albany Centre from 2016, including provisions for transitional students who completed INDG1140 before content was transferred to INDG2700 (Attachment E). NB: This item may need to be reviewed in consort with Item 11 on the agenda.

Recommendation: That this Committee confirms in principle support for plan to offer the IKHH major in Albany from 2016, as per Attachment E, for review by a meeting of the SIS Teaching Staff and the Executive. 11. UNITS TO BE OFFERED IN 2016 + PROPOSED UNIT COORDINATORS The Dean of Coursework Studies, Professor Grady Venville, has requested that the availability and teaching periods for all units be confirmed by September 2015, in time for the release of the 2016 Handbook. September is therefore the deadline for confirming which units will be offered in 2016 and what teaching period they will sit in. Attachment F is a draft plan to begin this planning exercise. After consideration by unit coordinators the draft plan can be referred to a meeting of the SIS Teaching Staff for amendment and approval. 12. OTHER BUSINESS 13. QUESTIONS WITHOUT NOTICE 14. NEXT MEETING The next meeting of the Teaching and Learning Committee will be held on Thursday, 10 September 2015 at 2.00pm at the SIS Resource Library. The cut-off date for submission of items for the Committee’s agenda is Friday, 4 September 2015. Items, with recommendations, should be forwarded to the Executive Officer at [email protected]. MINUTES OF THE MEETING OF THE SIS TEACHING AND LEARNING COMMITTEE

HELD ON THURSDAY 11 JUNE 2015

PRESENT Aileen Walsh, Co-opted Member Anita Creasey (Executive Officer) Dawn Bessarab, Director, Centre for Aboriginal Medical and Dental Health Grant Revell, Associate Dean Teaching & Learning (Chair) Gabrielle Garratt, Academic Coordinator, Indigenous Student Services Directorate Josh Reynolds, E-Learning Development Officer Mel Thomas, Law Coordinator & Associate Dean Research Paulina Motlop, Co-opted Member Shino Konishi, Associate Professor, School of Indigenous Studies and Faculty of Arts APOLOGIES: Sara Flood, Orientation Course Coordinator DECLARATIONS OF POTENTIAL CONFLICT OR PERCEIVED CONFLICTS OF INTEREST No declarations for potential or perceived conflict of interest were recorded.

PART I – ITEMS FOR COMMUNICATION TO BE DEALTH WITH EN BLOC 1. MINUTES RESOLVED – 5.2015 To confirm the Noting of Decisions made by the SIS Teaching and Learning Committee by circular dated 14 April 2015. 2. ITEMS/BUSINESS IN PROGRESS FOR NOTING SINCE PREVIOUS MEETING The Chair brought items from SCHEDULE 1 that are still in progress to the attention of the committee: • TL Action 27 – Josh Reynolds and Brendon DeGois will deliver a presentation to the

SIS Executive Committee on the School’s existing use of social media, University policies related to social media and proposed SIS policy on social media. This is timely as the new LMS platform Blackboard has greater social media capabilities than Moodle.

• TL Action 44 – A draft SIS Policy on Teaching Associates (sessional teaching staff/tutors) has been submitted to the Executive for consideration)

3. ACADEMIC MISCONDUCT ADVISOR Teaching Staff were advised that Aileen Walsh is the School’s Academic Conduct Advisor (ACA) tasked with managing the implementation and procedural aspects of the University Policy on Academic Conduct. Aileen provided members a copy of the University’s form for documenting incidents of academic misconduct (also available online). Anita advised that all documentation needed to be recorded on TRIM. Aileen advised that unit coordinators must report all incidences to her as the ACA although minor incidents did not necessarily have to be documented. It was noted that students still need to reference the source if they are quoting their own work (eg. an essay for another unit). The School has to report all incidents to the University annually. Shino Konishi advised that the Arts Faculty have considered having a mandatory exam or in-person assessment component for each unit. Aileen noted that TurnItIn is a valuable tool and allows students to test their work to identify plagiarism

A9

Page 10: The University of Western Australia School of Indigenous Studies … · 2015. 9. 4. · Recommendation: That this committee endorses the proposed changes to the prerequisites for

2

before submission. Josh Reynolds advised that there are issues with TurnItIn but there are other creative uses that can be showcased. 4. STANDING REPORTS 4.1 EDUCATION FUTURES STRATEGY GROUP – 27 APRIL 2015 (Grant Revell) The group’s current focuses are Carpe Diem workshops, Project Black Swan and the Observatory Working Group which will act as a think tank. Agendas and minutes from these meetings can be viewed online and key items/outcomes will be brought to this committee. 4.2 E-LEARNING REPORT (Josh Reynolds) The bringing forward of the dates for students to enter semester 2 preferences on OLCR, resulted in the semester 1 OLCR groups being wiped from LMS which disrupted marking for INDG1150 tutors that relied on these groups. Project Black Swan has not rolled out according to plan. The original target of having all units migrated by mid-May 2015 was not met and there have been problems with the existing LMS platform (Moodle). The migration process is more cumbersome than anticipated. A SIS ‘Faculty Template’ has been designed for Blackboard to provide structure and consistent guidelines but still allow for flexibility. Blackboard’s myriad of options presents new opportunities for ISE and to embed Noongar language within the SIS template. As a faculty SIS is moving towards self-sufficiency and more sophisticated use of Blackboard/LMS as SIS already meets the baseline of the Guidelines for Deployment of University Online Environments (attached to the Agenda) which have not been met across the whole university. 4.3 TEACHING & LEARNING ADMINISTRATIVE OFFICER REPORT (Anita Creasey) Anita Creasey reminded members of the key dates for semester 1 results, semester 2 timetabling and OLCR requirements, as tabled in the agenda. Staff were reminded that a 2016 teaching-planning meeting was scheduled for 9 July to confirm what units will be offered in 2016 and the teaching periods they will be offered in, in response to the Dean of Coursework Studies mandate that these be finalised before the release of the 2016 handbook in November 2015.

PART II – ITEMS FOR DECISION TO BE DEALT WITH EN BLOC

No Items.

PART III – ITEMS FOR DISCUSSION AND DECISION 5. UNIT OUTLINE PROFORM FOR DEGREE UNITS Aileen Walsh suggested it would be timely for teaching staff to review the unit outline pro-forma prior to semester 2, 2015. Students have raised issues in the past regarding the essay criteria rubric’s reference to an abstract. Paulina noted that she has to adjust the pro-forma for EDUC5429 as the teaching dates vary for Education students. Aileen also pointed to issues with the Essay Writing Advice in the pro-forma suggesting it could be reworded to clarify for students what is meant by ‘adherence to Aboriginal writing standards’. The rubric for art work could be removed from the standard pro-forma and inserted for units that do require it (eg. INDG3700, INDG3800). It was also noted that the pro-forma should be explicit that students can be 10% over or under the word limit before incurring a penalty and what this penalty would be.

3

5.1 UNIT ATTENDANCE & PARTICIPATION As part of item 5, members discussed the assessment of students’ attendance and participation in larger group settings. Shino Konishi advised that she had researched self- and peer-assessment strategies and designed a rubric that required students to assess and reflect on their own participation at the end of each class. Shino will provide members with a copy of this by email. RESOLVED TL Action 49 That teaching staff review the unit outline pro forma, mark up specific changes and provide recommendations to the Director of Teaching & Learning.

6. CURRICULUM MAPPING Paulina noted that she has been charged with overseeing a review of the Orientation Course and the terms of reference were being written up. The course had not been reviewed since at least three years ago, perhaps when Jeromy Harvey was course coordinator. Paulina will bring her perspective from a school environment which focused on pathways, sharing resources and complimentary content within units. A curriculum mapping exercise could be applied to the IKHH major, with reference to the existing major map. Specifically a review of the major could look at the progression of core units, overlapping content and broadening units. RESOLVED TL Action 50 That Paulina Motlop works with the Orientation and Major Course Coordinators on curriculum mapping, in consultation with teaching staff, with proposed curriculum changes to be brought to a teaching planning meeting at the end of 2015, in time for next annual curriculum change deadline (March 2016). 7. NEXT MEETING The next meeting of the Teaching and Learning Committee will be held on Thursday, 13 August at 11.00am at the SIS Resource Library. The cut-off date for submission of items for the Committee’s agenda is Friday, 7 August 2015. Items, with recommendations, should be forwarded to Anita Creasey.

2. AUDIT TEAM MEETINGS WITH FACULTY DEANS

At the inaugural Audit Team meeting on 6th July 2015, members considered it important that Faculty Deans were involved in the Review process from an early stage and it was agreed that individual meetings with Deans, the Dean of Coursework Studies and the relevant members of the Audit Team should be scheduled in the near future in order for Deans to provide input into the self-assessment report (as well as potentially making submissions to the Review Panel at a later stage).

The schedule for meetings with Faculty Deans is included as at Appendix A.

It was previously agreed that the meetings with Faculty Deans should be structured and guided by a common set of question to facilitate identification of shared issues/ concerns/ strengths. The following questions have been identified to date:

1. What are the perceived successes and strengths as well as weaknesses of the New Courses Framework?

2. Does the New Courses Framework pose challenges for accreditation requirements? (where applicable)

3. What quality assurance mechanisms are in place and how do they perform (Faculty Governance)?

4. Who are the Faculty’s key industry stakeholders that should be invited to make a submission to the Review Panel?

Members of the Audit Team are invited to propose additional questions.

3. STAKEHOLDER INPUT INTO AUDIT TEAM SUBMISSION

At its inaugural meeting, the Review of Courses’ Audit Team discussed the importance of facilitating stakeholder input into the Audit Team’s submission to the Review Panel. While a broad range of stakeholders will be invited to make submissions to the Review Panel, it was considered important that input from key strategic stakeholders such as Faculty Deans would be sought early in the process to be taken into consideration when preparing the degrees’ self-assessment reports.

In addition to Faculty Deans, the Review of Courses’ Project Team discussed input from the following key stakeholders:

3.1 Majors’ Coordinators It is proposed to contact all major coordinators via email and invite them to provide feedback to the Audit Team on a defined set of questions. Feedback from Majors’ Coordinators may be valuable when assessing the structure and performance of the majors within a degree. Members are invited to propose questions for consideration by majors’ coordinators.

3.2 Students It is proposed to conduct a survey of students through the University’s Institutional Research Unit. In conjunction with other data, the survey is intended to assist the Audit Team with assessing the Quality of Students (including student experience) and Quality of Teaching as part of the degrees’ self-assessment. Members are invited to propose questions/ topics for inclusion in the survey and discuss potential additional mechanisms for seeking students’ input into the Audit Team’s assessment.

4. UNIVERSITY CURRICULUM COMMITTEE MEETING ON 22nd JULY 2015

The Chair will brief Audit Team Members on the outcomes from the University Curriculum Committee meeting on 22nd July 2015, in particular with regards to the proposed Double Major in Psychology and the discussions relating to Category A Broadening Units and Complementary Units.

5. SUBMISSION TEMPLATE AND SELF-ASSESSMENT REPORT GUIDELINES

The Review of Courses’ Project Team (comprising Sue Smurthwaite, Kabilan Krishnasamy, Jan Cardy, Maxwell Keeble and Kathrin Stroud), in consultation with the Dean of Coursework Studies, have developed a draft template for the Audit Team’s submission to the Review Panel. The draft submission template is included at Appendix B and members are invited to provide feedback.

As an accompaniment to the submission template, a guidelines document has been prepared to assist members of the Review of Courses’ Audit Team tasked with the preparation of self-assessment documentation for one of the four Bachelor degrees under review. The establishment of a common review framework for the four Bachelor degrees ensures that the degrees’ structure and performance are assessed based on comparable data. However, the document is intended as a guide only and it is not expected that every performance indicator is addressed in detail. The guidelines should be read in conjunction with the background information (University Policies and previous reports) and informed by the data compiled on the Review of Courses’ dedicated SharePoint site.

The document is included as at Appendix C. Members are invited to provide feedback.

6. SHAREPOINT SITE AND DATA REQUIREMENTS

Members are reminded that a SharePoint site has been established in support of the Review of Courses’ Audit Team. All members now have access to the SharePoint site and are invited to provide feedback and request any additional data to support the degrees’ self-assessment documentation by contacting the Executive Officer.

1 Introduction

This guideline document has been prepared to assist members of the Review of Courses’ Audit Team tasked with the preparation of self-assessment documentation for one of the four Bachelor degrees under review.

Each of the four self-assessment reports is expected to be compiled as stand-alone documents which will be included as chapters in the main submission to the Review Panel.

2 Self-Assessment Criteria

In addition to general information applicable to all four degrees in the undergraduate component of New Courses, the Audit Team’s submission to the Review of Courses’ Review Panel is expected to include a self-assessment report for each degree.

It is proposed that the self-assessment report takes the following aspects and associated data into account when analysing the degree’s structure and performance, opportunities for improvement and recommendations for change. It is important that the assessment is evidence-based and that the relevant evidence (data, benchmarking, stakeholder input, surveys etc.) are included in the report for the Review Panel’s consideration.

Level 2 Options for Students who have completed INDG1140 and cannot take INDG2700 (in order of preference)

1. We ask for the flexibility to use a suitable level 2 unit from another discipline (eg. HIST/ANTH) and the major assignment is written on a topic relevant to Indigenous studies

è HIST2003 Crises & Controversies in Australia History (Shino Konishi) – available in Albany in 2016; students can choose essay topic. Prereq of lvl 1 HIST unit may be waived at Jennifer O’Neil’s request.

2. We offer INDG2600 or VISA2051 as an intensive unit. Jennifer may be ble to find someone in Albany with the appropriate qualifications to tutor this unit.

Level 3 INDG3300* INDG3400*

+ One of the following level 3 options INDG3800 as an intensive unit, perhaps including field trip component involving Stephen Hopper and his existing work [Jennifer would like to discuss this further] INDG3600 OR INDG3700 (although these units are designed to be taken concurrently)
