TheUniversityoftheSouth(familiarlyknownasSewanee,fortheTennesseetowninwhichtheUniversityislocated)isoneofthena-tion’sfinestinstitutionsofhigherlearning,aprivateuniversityof
theEpiscopalChurchwithadistinguishedundergraduateCollegeofArtsandSciences,aleadinggraduateSchoolofTheologyofferingmaster’slevelandadvanceddegrees,andaninnovativeSchoolofLettersofferingsummermaster’sdegreeprogramsinEnglishandcreativewriting.Inanenvironmentofintenseintellectualengagement,Sewaneestudentsarechallengedtolivethelifeofthemindandtoapplytheireducationtothecomplexitiesofourtimethroughleadershiprolesinsociety.Sewaneehasproduced26RhodesScholars,aPulitzerPrize-winningauthor,aU.S.senatorandotherelectedofficials,businessandfinancialleaders,criticallyacclaimedpoetsandwriters,leadingacademicswhobecamecollegepresidents,andthreeofthelastsixpresidingbishopsoftheEpiscopalChurchintheUnitedStates.
TheUniversity’scommitmenttotheliberalarts,tothecom-plementarynatureoffaithandreason,andtothefunda-mentalimportanceofintegrityandhonorisgroundedinitsmottofromPsalm133:Ecce quam bonum et quam iucundum habitare fratres in unum(“Beholdhowgoodandpleasantitiswhenkindredlivetogetherinunity”).Anditfindsfullexpression
inthequalityandpassionofthefaculty.Theyarelead-ingscholarsandresearchersintheirfieldswithanabidingcommitmenttoteaching,andintheclosecommunitythatisSewaneetheydevelopextraordinarilyrichandenduringrelationshipswiththeirstudentsthattranscendbothplaceandtime.
Theserelationships—persontoperson,aswellastothespecialplacethatisSewanee—havesustainedtheUniversi-tyoftheSouthsinceitsfoundingin1857.Theyhavegivenrisetouniqueandcherishedtraditionsthatcontinuefromgenerationtogeneration,linkingstudentsandalumniincommonaffectionfortheUniversity.Mostimportantly,theyhaveprovidedawellspringofinstitutionalachievementfromwhichSewaneelooksconfidentlytoitsfuture.

TheUniversityoftheSouthhastakentheopportunityoverthepastdozenyearstolookbackonadistinctive
historyoftrialandtriumph,includingmarkingboththe150thanniversaryofitsoriginalfoundingin1857andthatofitssuccessfulsecondfoundingadecadelateraftertheCivilWarwhentheoriginalresourcesoftheUniversityhadbeenlost.ThesecondfoundersovercamemanychallengestofinallyopentheUniversi-ty’sdoorsin1868.
Inthemidstof–andinresponseto–thesocial,cultural,andpoliticalcrisispromptedbytheimpassionedandincreasinglyviolentconflictoverthefutureofslaveryintheUnit-edStates,thefirstfoundingoftheUniversitywasledbyEpiscopalclergyandlaydelegatesfromAlabama,Arkansas,Florida,Georgia,Louisiana,Mississippi,NorthCarolina,SouthCarolina,Tennessee,andTexas.OnJuly4,1857,theymetatLookoutMountainnearChattanooga,Tennessee,tonametheUniversity’sfirstBoardofTrustees.OnJan.6,1858,auniversitycharterwasgranted

bytheStateofTennessee.TheTrusteesselectedasiteinSewanee,atoptheCumberlandPlateaubetweenChatta-noogaandNashville,andlocallandownersandtheSewaneeMiningCompanydonatednearly10,000acresfortheenterprise.TheseearlyeffortsledtotheceremoniallayingofthecornerstoneinSewaneeonOct.10,1860.

ThesecondfoundingwaslaunchedintheaftermathoftheCivilWar,thepoliticalandmilitarydestructionoftheConfederacy,thecollapseoftheslaveholdingsocietyandliberationofnearlyfourmillionenslavedAfricanAmer-icans.In1866,theRt.Rev.CharlesToddQuintard,thesecondbishopofTennesseeandtheUniversity’scom-missionerofbuildingsandlands,returnedtothecampusandformallyre-establishedtheUniversity.WithfinancialhelpfromEpiscopalsupportersinAmericaandAnglicanparishesinEngland,andwithbooksdonatedbyOxfordandCambridgeuniversities,theUniversityoftheSouthre-emerged.ThefirstOpeningConvocationonSept.18,1868,wasattendedbyninestudentsandfourfacultymembers.
RecoveringfromReconstructionfollowingtheCivilWar,theUniversityexperiencedsteadygrowthandofferedprofessionaleducationinareasincludingengineering,law,andmedicineuntil1909,whenthosedepartmentswereclosed.RemainingweretheUniversity’sbasicdepartments:apreparatoryschool,acollege,andaseminary.
Successfulathleticteamsandathrivingculturallifeattheturnofthe20thcenturytestifiedtoSewanee’semergence
amongmainstreamcollegesanduniversities.In1891,royalpurplewasadoptedastheschoolcolor,andSewaneeplayeditsfirstintercollegiatefootballgame.The1899footballteamwasundefeated,winning12straightgames—includingfivegamesduringasix-day,3,000-mileroadtrip.
TheUniversityshoredupitsailingfinances,undertookmuch-neededrenovations,andemergedfromtheerasoftheGreatDepressionandWorldWarIIwell-equippedandpreparedtoenteritsgreatestperiodofgrowth.From1950to1970,theendowmentincreased,oldbuildingsunder-wentmajorrenovations,andmorenewbuildingswereconstructedineachofthesetwodecadesthaninpreviousUniversityhistory.
AfricanAmericanmenwereallowedtoapplytotheCollegein1961(thoughnoneenrolleduntil1963),andwom-enwereadmittedasfull-timestudentsin1969.Today’sfreshmanclassesareabouthalfwomenandincludediversestudentsfromaroundtheworld.In2019-20,Sewaneeismarkingthe50thanniversaryofthefirstclassofwomentomatriculateattheUniversitywithayearlongcelebration.

The Roberson Project on Slavery, Race, and Reconciliation
LaunchedinJuly2016,theRobersonProjectonSlav-
ery,Race,andReconciliationattheUniversityoftheSouthisasix-yearinitiativewhosepurposesaretoinvestigatetheUniversity’sdeephistoricalentanglementswithslaveryandslavery’slegaciesandtoassistitscommunityindis-cerninghowitshouldrespondtothathistory.Ourproject’snamememorializesthelateProfessorofHistoryHoustonBryanRoberson(1958-2016),whowasthefirsttenuredAfricanAmericanfacultymemberatSewaneeandthefirsttomakeAfricanAmericanhistoryandculturethefocusofhisteach-ingandscholarship.TheRobersonProjectseekstohonorhisinspiringlegaciesatSewanee:thedevotion
torigorousteaching,thepursuitofscholarship,thededicationtosocialjustice,andthepersonalexampleofhighmoralcharacter.Indoingso,theRobersonProjectaimstohelpSewaneeconfrontourhistoryinordertoseekamorejustandequitablefutureforourbroadanddiversecommunity.
Nowinitsthirdyear,theRobersonProjecthaspursuedanexpan-siveagendaofarchivalresearch,curriculardevelopment,publicprogramming,andcivicengage-ment.Fromthestart,though,ithasapproacheditsworkasabranchofSewanee’scoreidentityandmissionasateaching-focusedinstitutionforundergraduateandseminaryeduca-tion.StudentsfromtheCollegeandtheSchoolofTheologyhavebeencentralparticipantsinitsresearch,
administrative,andprogrammingwork.Ourgeneralattitudetowardthesubjectofourinvestigationsandouroutreachalsohasbeenfun-damentallyeducationalinnature,seekingtoengageourcommunityofstudents,facultyandstaff,localresidents,andalumniinactiveconsiderationofthemostdifficultsubjectsandquestionsraisedbyourUniversity’shistory.
Amorecompleteunderstandingandrecognitionofthathistoryanditslegacieswillenabletheinsti-tutiontomeetitsobligationstoeducatestudentsandmembersofthiscommunitypastandfutureandtorealizeSewanee’spledgetobeaninclusiveuniversityofandforthediversecitizenryofthe21st-centurySouth.
UndercurrentVice-ChancellorJohnMcCardell,Sewaneehasstrengtheneditspositionamongthenation’sliberalartsuniversitiesandEpiscopalseminaries.Duringhistenure,SewaneehasenjoyedrecordapplicationstotheCollege,andundergraduateenrollmenthasgrownfromabout1,500tomorethan1,700students.Newacademicinitiatives,includingmajorsinneuroscienceandfinanceandacom-prehensiveOfficeofGlobalCitizenship,haveenhancedthecurriculum,extendedSewanee’sreach,andprovidedexpandedopportunitiesforresearchandinternships.
Inaddition,theUniversityhasreaffirmeditsgoalofmakinganexcellentcollegeeducationmoreaccessiblefor
moreofthenation’sbeststudents.InSeptember2019,theUniversityannouncedthatitwillmeetthefulldemonstrat-edneedofadmittedstudentswhoqualifyforfinancialaid,startingwiththefirst-yearstudentswhoarriveinfall2020.TheUniversity’sBoardofRegentshasmadeacommitmentthatbynolaterthanfall2026,theUniversitywillreturntomeetingthefullneedofallofitsundergraduatestudents.PreviouseffortsincludetheUniversity,in2011,reducingthecostofaSewaneeeducationby10percent;forseveralyearsafterthat,afour-yeartuitionfreezeappliedtoeachincomingclass.Togethertheseactionsrepresentastrongcommitmenttokeepingthecostofatop-qualitycollegeeducationasaffordableandpredictableaspossible.

The Domain of the University
TheUniversityoftheSouthcampuscomprises13,000acresknownastheDomain.Largelyundevelopedand
richinbiodiversity,thelandisintrinsictotheidentityandpurposeoftheUniversity,adistinctiveassetofferinganunparalleledoutdoorlaboratoryandboundlessrecre-ationalopportunities.Today,theUniversity’slandholdingsarethesecondlargestamonginstitutionsofhighereducationintheUnitedStates.OftheUniversity’s13,000acres,approximatelyone-third,alsoknownasthe“innerDo-main,”iscomposedofthecampus,businesses,residentialareas,andstudenthousing.Theremainingtwo-thirds,“thegreaterDomain,”ismanagedforresearch,teaching,recreation,andecosystemservicesbytheOfficeofEnvi-ronmentalStewardshipandSustainabilityforusebyallpartieswithintheUniversitycommunityandoutside.
TheDomainislocatedontheedgeofthesouthernCum-berlandPlateau,aregionknownforbothitsbiodiversityanditsoutdoorrecreationalofferings.Morethan1,100speciesofvascularplantshavebeendocumentedontheDomain,andclassofferingsallowstudentstoparticipate
inresearchandactivemanagementfocusedonbiologicalconservation.TheOfficeofEnvironmentalStewardshipandSustainabilitymaintainsanoutdoorrecreationalsystemthatisunparalleledamongU.Scampuses.ThePerime-terTrailisthesignaturetrailoftheDomain,a22-mileloopthatcirclesmuchofthecampusandprovideshiking
andmountainbikingexperiencesthatareunmatchedintheregion.Sixteenlakesand10developedcampingareasgivestudentsam-pleopportunitiestoexplorethefurthestreachesoftheproperty,androckclimbingandboulderingopportunitiesaboundforstudentsandstaffalike.Thetrailnetworkspassthroughbothprotectedold-growthremnantforestaswellastheSewaneeDemonstrationForest,an
activelymanagedareawhereinnovativeforestmanagementandprescribedfireprogramscreateandenhancewildlifeandplantcommunities.
ThevillageofSewaneeisontheDomainandishometoapproximately2,500people;itisnotincorporatedbutismanagedbytheUniversity,whichprovidespoliceandfireprotection,andemergencymedicalservices.
The Sewanee Village Project
TheSewaneeVillageisacriticalcomponenttothehealthandlongevityoftheUniversity.Avibrantvillage
willhelpusattractandretainhighqualityemployeesandstudents,willpromotetourism,andwillsupportahealthylocaleconomy.TheSewaneeVillageprojectisacollabora-tionbetweentheUniversityandtheSewaneecommunitytoreposition,redevelop,andrevitalizedowntown.
Traditions and Ethos
Sewaneeisaseriousacademicinstitutionandaclose-knitcommunitythathasevolvedtomeetthechanging
demandsofitsstudentsandtheworldaroundit.Italsoisaplacethatgathersstrengthfromitstraditions,fromthewearingoftheacademicgownand“tappingtheroof”tothequintessentialsmall-townFourthofJulycelebration.Thesecustoms,whichenrichtheexperienceatSewanee,emergefromitspastand,fromtimetotime,throughstudentandfacultyingenuity.
TheHonorCode,inexistenceinformallysincethe1870sandformallysince1913,definesSewanee’scommunityof
respect,trust,andtolerance,whichbringssecurityandfreedomtocampus.StudentscommittotheseidealsbysigningtheUniversity’sHonorCodeintheChapelatma-triculation.TheHonorCodeisatraditionthatismain-tainedbyanHonorCouncilelectedfromthestudentbodyincollaborationwiththefacultyandtheDeanofStudents’Office.
Thewearingofacademicgownsbyfaculty,andbyCollegeandSchoolofTheologystudentswhohaveattainedmem-bershipintheOrderoftheGownbasedontheiracademicstanding,isuniquelySewanee,anodtotheUniversity’shistorictiestoOxfordthatsymbolizestheinstitution’srespectforacademicendeavorandleadership.Thewearingofgownsisoptional,andstudentsandfacultyreadilyshedthemtopursueenvironmentalfieldstudiesontheDomain,collaborativeresearchinlaboratories,andstudyabroad.
ComprehensiveexaminationstakeninthesenioryearofundergraduatestudyconcludetheacademicexperienceatSewanee,andpromptstudentstosay,“I’mcomped,”aftercompletingrigorousoralorwrittenexamsintheirmajor.

EXAMPLECOTTAGECOURTRENDERINGA unique and modern example of new housing types, this cottage court offers a close-knit and affordable alternative to many existing housing options in Sewanee.
Academics and Curriculum

academicachievement,fromBenedictScholarshipsforthebestenteringstudentstoalonglistofRhodesScholarsatgraduation.TheCollegeofArtsandSciencesoffersachal-lengingandstimulatingprogramintheliberalartswithanemphasisonmasteryoffundamentaldisciplines.Moreover,theacademicprogramdevelopstheintellectandcharacterofitsstudentsandpreparesthemforlivesofachievement,leadership,andservice.Thehighexpectationsplacedonstudentsarebalancedwiththefaculty’scommitmenttopersonalattentionandencouragement.Withoutquestion,allstudents,whatevertheirdiscipline,developtheabilitytoresearch,analyze,solveproblems,write,speak,andlisten.
Whilethegeneraleducationcurriculumensuresthedevel-opmentofcommon“habitsofmind,”ourspecificcoursesofstudy—ourmajor,minors,andrelatedacademicpro-grams—offerstudentsopportunitiestodevelopandpursuetheirpassionswithfacultywhoarebothcommittedtotheir

intellectualfieldandtothecraftofteaching.Sewanee’scurriculumchallengeswhileiteducates.Degreerequire-mentsarerigorousandextensiveandincludecompre-hensiveexaminationsinmajorareasofstudy.Offering37majors,43minors,and15specialprograms,alongwithpre-professionalprogramsinbusiness,health/medicine,education,engineering,andlaw,theCollegepreparesitsstudentsforcareersineveryfield.Thefacultyarekeenlyawareofdevelopmentsinthebroaderlandscapeandac-tivelyupdatenotjustcoursesbutwholeprogramsofstudy,includingcreatingnewmajors:withinjustthepasttwoaca-demicyears,thefacultyhaveaddedmajorsinneuroscienceandfinance.Moreover,thecurriculumoffersflexibilityforstudents,withinterdisciplinarystudy,doublemajors,andminorsallowingthemtotailortheirownacademicexperience.
Importantly,theCollegerecognizestheneedforstudentstomakeimmediateconnectionsbetweentheworkthattheyaredoingintheirclassesandtheapplicationofsuchknowledgebeyondSewanee.Ourintegratedadvisingpro-

gramengagesstudentsinreflectiveactivitieswhereintheyconsiderhowtheircoursesconnecttooneanother,howtheyarebuildingtheireducation,andhowtheskillstheyaredevelopingrelatespecificallytobroadcareerexplora-tion.TheSewaneeCareerCenter,aswellastheofficesofCivicEngagementandofStudentActivities,partnerwithfacultyadvisorssothatstudentsarebestpositionedtoseewheretheirintellectualskillsandsuccessescantakethem.
ThisattentiontoapplyingknowledgeisessentialtotheSe-waneePledge,whereinstudentsareguaranteedopportunitiestoengageinparticular“highimpact”practicesthathelpstu-dentsmakemeaningoftheireducation.Studentsareguar-anteedeitherapaidsummerinternship(anotherexampleoftheCareerCenterpartneringwithacademics)orasummerstudent-facultyresearchexperienceascoordinatedbytheOfficeofUndergraduateResearch.ThroughourOfficeofGlobalCitizenship,allstudentsalsohavetheopportunitytotakepartinasemester-longstudyawayprogramatnoaddi-tionaltuitionexpense.Inadditiontomanysemester-longstudyabroadprograms,severalsummerprogramsareuniquetoSewaneeandorganizedbyUniversityfaculty.
Asatestamenttothesuccessofourstudents,Sewaneehasgraduated26RhodesScholars,fiveofwhomreturnedtoteachattheUniversity.Theinstitutioncountsamongitsgraduates25FulbrightScholars(inthelast10years),48WatsonPostgraduateFellows,sevenNationalScienceFoun-dationGraduateResearchFellows(inthelast10years),and35NCAAPostgraduateScholars.Fifty-fivepercentofgraduatesearnadvanceddegrees.Ofgraduateswhoapplytolawschool,over90percentareaccepted,and85percentofthosewhoapplytomedical,dental,orveterinaryschoolare
accepted.Perhapsmosttelling,ourSewaneeCareerCenterhastrackedourgraduates,andformultipleyears,morethan95percentofSewaneegraduateshavebeeneitherfullyemployed,ingraduateschool,orpursuingafellowshipwithinsixmonthsofgraduation.Withoutquestion,thebroaderworldappreciatesthevalueofaSewaneeeducation.
Features of Our Academic Environment
OurmostvisiblehallmarkistheDomainitself—13,000acresoflandthat,dependingupontheoccasion,
servesasalivingscientificlaboratory,asourceofartisticandspiritualinspiration,ameansofembodyingmens sana in corpore sano,aplacetodeveloplastingrelationshipsamongandbetweenstudents,faculty,andstaff—andalwaysasaconstantreminderoftheimportanceofsustainabilityandoftheneedtocareforourresourcesmindfullyandinten-tionally.TheSewaneeIntegratedProgramintheEnviron-mentbringstogetheracademicmajors,co-curricularandextracurricularactivities,andastrongsenseofplaceontheDomain.Truly,theDomainisaresourcenoothercollegecanoffer,andourentirecommunityrespectsit,isthankfulforit,andwillprotectit.
TheUniversityhasanexceptionallystrongliterarytra-dition,withthenation’soldestcontinuouslypublishedliteraryreview,theSewanee Review,andtheannualSewaneeWriters’Conference,supportedthroughanendowmentestablishedbyplaywrightTennesseeWilliams.Thetraditionpermeatestheentirecurriculum,andSewaneegraduatesareknownfortheirfacilitywiththewrittenword.

graduates,withtheirabilitytoreadwell,writewell,andthinkwell,canhaveimmediatesuccesswithinthebusinesscommunity.Wearecreatingmoresynergyandopportu-nitiesbymovingtheBabsonCenter,alongwithSewanee’sCareerCenter,tothecenterofcampuswheretheywillbeproximatetotheeconomicsdepartmentandthebusinessprogram.
Faculty
TheCollegeattractstalentedandenergeticacademicswithastrongcommitmenttoundergraduateteaching.
Mostfacultyliveonornearcampus,andfacultyarejustaslikelytoengagestudentsatthecampuscoffeeshop,atcam-pusconcertsandlectures,oronahikingtrailastheyareintheclassroomorduringregularofficehours.Sewaneeisaplacewherefacultyandstudentslive,work,worship,andlearntogether.“Itisasmall,intimatecommunitywithaclearsenseofpurpose,coherentvalues,andacollegialatmosphere,”observedtheauthorsofStudent Success in College: Creating Conditions that Matter(GeorgeKuh,etal.,2005).
TheUniversity’sCenterforTeachingencouragesandpro-motesteachingexcellenceamongourfaculty.Thecenterprovidestimeandspaceforcollegialconversationsandcriticalreflections,aswellasprogramsonteachingprac-tices,opportunitiestoformrelationshipswithmentors,grantsforinnovativeteaching,resourcesoneffectiveteach-ingandlearningforfacultyatalllevelsandcareerstages,andsupportforpedagogicalcollaboration.
ThenewCenterforSpeakingandListening—createdaspartofourQualityEnhancementPlan(QEP)project—rec-
ognizestheimportanceofsuch;thefacultyguidestudentstobebetteratlistening,constructingandevaluatingar-guments,andworkingtowardsharedprogressratherthanpartisancompetition.

UndergraduatestudentsatSewaneeareindepen-dent-mindedandhighachieving,attractedtothe

Sewanee’sstudentgovernmentorganizationisbicameral,comprisingtheStudentGovernmentAssociationand
theOrderoftheGown.TheStudentGovernmentAssoci-ationrepresentsstudentopinionandlegislatesinmattersofstudentaffairs.TheOrderoftheGowniscomposedofstudentswhohaveachievedtherequiredgradepointaver-ageandareentitledtoweartheacademicgown.TheOrderadvisestheStudentGovernmentAssociationandstrivestomaintainandpromotethespirit,tradition,andidealsoftheUniversity.
Recognizingtheimportanceofstudentcontribution,theUniversity’sBoardofTrusteesincludesthreestudenttrust-ees,twoelectedfromtheCollegeandonefromtheSchoolofTheology.Similarly,theCollegefacultyhasrepresenta-tivesofthestudentbodyonmanyofitscommittees.
Residential Life
A llstudents,withveryfewexceptions(e.g.,mar-riedstudents,dependentsofUniversityemployees,
studentsovertheageof24,andstudentslivingwiththeirchildren),liveinUniversity-approvedhousing,primar-ilycollegeresidencehalls,andmorethan95percentofstudentsliveinresidencehallsorsmallhousesmanagedbytheOfficeofResidentialLife.Substance-freehousingisachoiceamongasteadynumberofstudents.Ofthe30smallhousesmanagedbyResidentialLifethatarehometomorethan200sophomores,juniors,andseniors,19housesarededicatedtoanacademicareaofinterest,acommonpas-sion,adedicationtoactivism,orasharedidentity.Somelanguagehousesdatebacktothe1970sandotherhousesexperiencechangeingrouporthemeeverytwotothreeyears.Studentinterestinthematichousingishigh,anditistypicaltohavemoregroupsapplythantherearehousesininventory.
Residencehallsrangeinsizefrom26to120students.Manyhallshousestudentsinallclassyears.First-yearstu-dentsmaynotselecttheirownroommatesbutareinsteadmatchedbyhandbytheOfficeofResidentialLife,expand-ingfirst-yearstudentnetworksbeyondhometowns,athleticteams,andacademicdepartments.
Allhallshavetwoorthreeproctorswhocareforthefacilityanditsresidents.Proctorsarecampusleaderswhoactasliai-sonswiththeDeanofStudentsoffice,servingasmentorstostudentsundertheircare,arrangingeducationalandsocialactivitiesfortheresidentialcommunities,andservingondutynightlyinresidencehallswhenclassesareinsession.
Activities, Clubs, Organizations, and Fraternities and Sororities
Morethan110clubs,organizations,andsocialgroupsprovideinteractionamongthemembersoftheUni-

All Saints’ Chapel, Outreach, and Faith Communities
AllSaints’ChapelisoperatedunderthecareoftheUniversitychancellor,andworshipisaccordingtothe
usageoftheEpiscopalChurch.TheministryofAllSaints’isecumenicalandopentoall.Thechapelalsoisagather-ingplaceforpubliceventsinthelifeoftheUniversityandcommunity.
Thechapelisstaffedbyachaplainelectedbythetrustees,anassociatechaplain,laychaplain,organist/choirmaster,assistantorganist,administrativeassistant,assistantforministry,andweddingcoordinator.ThemissionofAllSaints’istopromotespiritualwellnessinourcommunitythroughworship,love,andservice.MorningandEveningPrayerareofferedeachweekday,andthreeEucharistsarecelebratedonSunday.
Theadultformationprocess,knownasCatechumenate,isofferedweeklyforstudents,faculty,staff,andcommunitymembers.Thisprocessmayculminateinbaptism,receptionintotheEpiscopalChurch,renewalofbaptismalvows,or
confirmation.Aninformal“come-as-you-are”Eucharist,calledGrowinginGrace,isheldonSundayeveningsandotherinformalgatheringstakeplacethroughouttheweek.
ServiceinitiativesfundedbytheUniversityhavetakenstu-dentsabroadundertheauspicesofAllSaints’ChapelandtheOfficeofCommunityEngagement.Eachyear,morethan100studentsspendtheirspringbreakservingothersinplacessuchasCostaRica,Jamaica,Ecuador,Miami,NewYorkCity,andNewOrleans.
ThoughSewaneeisanEpiscopaluniversity,studentsareencouragedtoexploreotherfaithcommunities.InadditiontoEpiscopalservices,theUniversityhasaRomanCatho-liccommunity,aMuslimStudentAssociation,aSewaneeJewishAssociation,andaPresbyteriancampusministry.IntheInterfaithHouse,astudentthemeresidence,studentsofdiversereligious,spiritual,andsecularbackgroundsgathertogethertobuildcommunityaroundtopicsoffaithandinclusion.
Office of Civic Engagement
TheOfficeofCivicEngagement(OCE)isanambitiousneweducationalassetwithavisionofactiveglobalcit-
izenscultivatingknowledge,resources,andrelationshipstoadvancetheeconomic,social,andenvironmentalwell-be-ingofitspartnercommunities.Theoffice’sprogrammingencompassescurricularandco-curricularprogrammingandtheintegrationofboth.Inaddition,theofficecollab-oratesandsupportsprogramsacrossthecampusthathaveacivicdimension,suchastheCommonBookprogramandtheRobersonProjectonSlavery,Race,andReconciliation.
Theprogramhasgrownfromitshistoriccommitmenttochurch-sponsoredmissionoutreachtoaformofservicethatfocusesonpartnershipandreciprocalrelationships.TheOfficeofCivicEngagementfocusesonpartnershipswithcommunityorganizationsservingthetwingoalsofcommunitydevelopmentandeducationforactiveglobalcitizenship.Beyondthisprogrammaticfocus,theOCEisafocalpointfortheUniversity’semergingaspirationtofunctionasaninnovativeanchorinstitutioninitsdistinc-tiveruralcontext.Assuch,ithasrepresentedtheUniver-sityinarobustcollaborationwiththeSouthCumberlandCommunityFundtobuildthecapacityofthenonprofitcommunityontheSouthCumberlandPlateau.

Athletics
Whileitdroppeditsaffiliationin1940,SewaneewasafoundingmemberoftheSoutheasternAthletic
Conferencein1932.Atthevarsitylevel,theUniversityhas11men’steamsand13women’steams.IntercollegiateteamscompeteinNCAADivisionIIIfromtheSouthernAth-leticAssociation.Typically,about30percentofSewaneestudentsparticipateinvarsityathletics.With35NCAAPostgraduateScholarshiprecipients,Sewaneeranksamongthenation’sleadinginstitutionsinanyNCAAdivision.Morethanhalfofundergraduatesparticipateinintramu-ralsports.Numerousclublevelsports,includingaverypopularrowingprogram,squash,andrugby,havemetwithsuccessincompetitionwithotherinstitutions.
Sewanee Outing Program
TheSewaneeOutingProgramwasfoundedtogivestu-dentsguidedinstructioninoutdooractivitiesbothon
andofftheDomain,includingrockclimbing,rappelling,hiking,caving,mountainbiking,camping,canoeing,andkayaking.ItoffersUniversitystudents,faculty,andstaffthechancetoexplorethesplendidoutdoorenvironmentoftheDomainandoffersstudentsthechancetodevelopasoutdoortripleaders.
ThePre-OrientationProgramoffersfirst-yearstudentsanopportunitytosampletheoutdoorlifeatSewanee.WhilefamiliarizingthemselveswithSewanee’s13,000acres,studentsmeetotherfirst-yearstudentsandupper-classstudentsinanenvironmentthatcreatestrustandestablish-esnewfriendships.

W henthefoundersoftheUniversityofthe
Southfirstdreamedofagreatuniversityfortheirregion,anemphasisontheologicaleducationwasanessentialpartoftheirvision.In1872,thefirstSewanee-trainedpriestwasordained.By1878,theSchoolofTheologywasformallyorganizedasasemi-naryoftheEpiscopalChurch,withitsownfacultyandfacilities.In1894,WilliamPorch-erDuBose,describedaspossiblythegreatesttheologianthattheEpiscopalChurchintheUSAhasproduced,waselecteddeanoftheSchoolofTheology.Beginningin1937,asummergraduateprogramevolvedinresponsetothecallforfurthercontinuingeducationforclergy;in1975,thisbecametheAdvancedDegreesProgram,offeringdoctoralandpostgraduate-levelcoursesduringsummersessions.In2013,theprogramcenterforlayeducationwasexpandedandrenamedtheBeeckenCenter.
TheSchoolofTheologyishometotwoquarterlytheolog-icaljournals—theSewanee Theological Review,acontemporaryjournaloftheologicalreflection,andtheAnglican Theolog-ical Review,theunofficialjournaloftheseminariesoftheEpiscopalChurchintheUnitedStatesandtheAnglicanChurchofCanada.

OneofthemostdistinctiveandinfluentialprogramsisEducationforMinistry(EfM),developedatSewanee45yearsagoandmanagedbystaffattheSchoolofTheologyandvolunteerleadersfromaroundtheglobe.Utilizingtheseminarmodel,EfMgroups(typicallysixto12innumber)learntoreflecttheologically,bringingtogethertheChris-tiantraditionandthecollectiveexperienceofthegroupmembers.InadditiontogroupsthroughouttheUnited

ThehomeofSewanee’sdepartmentsofForestryandGeology,SnowdenHallunderwentamajorrenova-
tionandexpansionin2011thatmorethandoubledthesizeofthebuilding.Locallysourcedwoodandsandstonearehighlights,asisanemphasisonsustainability—thebuildingisLEEDGold,andfeaturesenergy-efficientwindows,low-flowutilities,andrecycledmaterials.AfirstforSewaneearethe162solarpanelsinstalledonSnowden’sroof,collectinganaverageof44,000kWhperyear.Snowden’slodge-likeatrium,withitswood,stoneandcomfortablefurniture,providesspaceforstudentstogatherforstudyingorjustrelaxing.

theEpiscopalChurchandthepragmaticneedsofamodernuniversity.Therearetwoprincipalandinterrelatedbodies,theBoardofTrusteesandtheBoardofRegents.
TheBoardofTrusteesiscomposedofbishopsofthe28owningdiocesesoftheProtestantEpiscopalChurchintheUnitedStatesofAmericaaswellaselectedpresbytersandlaycommunicantsfromeachdiocese;electedlaypersonsandrepresentativesofthefaculties,staff,andstudentsoftheUniversity;representativesoftheAssociatedAlumnioftheUniversity;andelectedat-largetrusteeswhomaybefromoutsidetheowningdioceses.Inall,theBoardofTrusteesiscomprisedof140members.
TheBoardofTrusteesisanactivepolicy-makingbodyfortheinstitution.BytheConstitution,theBoardofTrusteesis“empoweredtotakesuchactionaswill,initsjudgment,bestpromotethewelfareoftheUniversity”inallcasesnotspecificallydesignatedintheCharter,ConstitutionorOr-dinances.Inparticular,theBoardofTrusteesisresponsi-bleforapprovingallplansforthegrowthanddevelopmentoftheUniversity,forevaluatingprogresstowardestab-lishedgoals,andforapprovinganyacquisitionortransferofUniversityproperty.TheBoardofTrusteesultimatelyisresponsibleforensuringthatthefinancialresourcesof
