Honor: A Carolina Tradition

For over two centuries, Carolina Students have pledged not to lie, cheat, or steal……

Goals of the Honor System:– Teach and promote personal honor and respect

for the rights of others– Encourage intellectual honesty, personal

integrity, respect and trust for other individuals– Protect educational opportunities for all

students

Overview – The Instrument

The Instrument of Student Judicial Governance sets forth the goals and standards used in promoting and upholding academic integrity at UNC.

The Instrument includes the Honor Code and establishes the Student Judicial System which processes allegations of student misconduct.

The Instrument relies on the commitment of students, faculty, and staff and each group is given express responsibilities.

Overview – Student Responsibilities

Conduct all academic work within the letter and spirit of the Honor Code Consult with faculty to clarify the meaning of plagiarism and to learn appropriate methods of citation Sign a pledge on all graded academic work certifying that no unauthorized assistance was given or received on the work Comply with faculty requirements designed to reduce the possibility of cheating Maintain the confidentiality of examinations

Sanctions – The grade

The grade is determined by the instructor, unless the instructor defers to the court.

An instructor may recommend a failing grade in the course or a failing grade on

the assignment.

At a the very minimum, the student must receive a failing grade on one component

of the course.

Disciplinary Records

Any violation results in a disciplinary record maintained for 10 years. This disciplinary record may be requested by graduate and professional schools and employers.

During the time that a sanction is active, a notation of disciplinary action is placed on the student’s transcript.

Prevention – Common Causes of Academic Violations

Prevention – What you can do to avoid violations …

• Pay careful attention to the Honor Code, including reviewing class syllabi and the Honor Pledge

• Understand the correct way to cite sources and why it is important

• Follow instructions regarding exams and assignments. If those instructions are unclear, seek clarification

• Practice good time/stress management so that you can avoid becoming overwhelmed

The Honor System process

• 1. Instructor suspects violation and may or may not meet with the student

• 2. Instructor reports the violation and makes any recommendations for sanctions

• 3. Student meets with Student Attorney General to discuss alleged violation and rights of the student

• 4. If charged, the student is assigned a student counsel to assist in presenting the case

• 5. Hearing is held before student Honor Court. If guilty, the Court determines an appropriate sanction

• 6. Student may appeal on various grounds. If no appeal or if appeal is unsuccessful, sanction goes into effect
