User Guide on how to access Blended Learning
Materials on how Bloom’s taxonomy can be used to
plan teaching, learning & assessment
Getting started with Moodle
Before you can access any materials, you must first assign yourself as a “student” to the appropriate
course(s). To do this, simply use your staff username and password to log on to the college’s VLE,
Moodle.
Click on the “courses” tab in the top bar and a black pop up box will appear with four options, scroll
down the box and click on the third option which is the “view all courses” tab.
This will take you to where you can access all the courses and their respective learning materials. For
the purpose of this course, click on the “Teaching, Learning & Assessment” tab.
This will take you to where you can access materials uploaded onto the Teaching, Learning &
Assessment course. Click on the Teaching, Learning & Assessment tab which will take you to a screen
where you need to assign yourself as a “learner” to this course.
In order to assign yourself as a learner, you need to self enrol on the course by entering an enrolment
key. The enrolment key for this course is SD-TLA. This enrolment key can be copied and pasted from
the right hand menu bar or alternatively you can type the code in manually.
When you have entered this enrolment key click on the “enrol me” tab.
Once you have done this, you will receive an email welcoming you to the Teaching, Learning and
Assessment course and you will be able to access all the materials uploaded on to the course.
For information purposes, you would need to go through this process again, in order to enrol as a
learner on other courses and to access the learning materials the courses contain.
How to access the course materials for Bloom’s Taxonomy
Click on to the Bloom’s Taxonomy image to access the learning materials for this course.
You will see a power point presentation entitled “How to Use Bloom’s Taxonomy to plan Teaching,
Learning & Assessment”. Double click on the presentation to open up the content.
Slide 2: Read the slide to familiarise yourself with the aim and objectives for this blended learning
session.
Slide 3: As can be seen, this is the final session of this six week staff development programme on how
to use Bloom’s Taxonomy to plan Teaching, Learning & Assessment. This session will focus on the final
level, evaluation, and how evaluative verbs can be used to structure questions and to set objectives
during the lesson planning process.
Slide 4: Activity 1
This activity is split into 3 sections and is based around developing your knowledge of evaluation.
I. Think about the word “evaluation” and without consulting any other sources use a pen and paper
to write down a definition.
II. Use the internet or a dictionary to research the word “evaluation” to obtain a true definition, cross
reference this with your definition to identify any similarities & differences.
III. Identify what type of word “definition” is.
Slide 5: This slide identifies “evaluation” as a noun and gives a definition from the Oxford English
dictionary
Slide 6: Activity 2
Think about your own teaching, learning and assessment practice and compile a mind map which
identifies all the activities you plan in your teaching, learning & assessment practice which gives your
learners the opportunity to demonstrate evaluation of a given subject.
Slide 7: Activity 3
This slide identifies some key phrases for assessment which you can use in your practice to set learners
objectives or learning activities to demonstrate evaluation. Re-visit the mind map you produced in
the previous task and allocate key phrases for assessment which demonstrate evaluation for each of
the activities outlined in your mind map.
Slide 8: This slide identifies key-evaluation based verbs which you will find useful for setting objectives
and planning activities to enable your learners to demonstrate evaluation of a subject. Cross reference
these against your mind map to ensure you have added key phrases for assessment which are pitched
at the correct level of study and adjust/amend your mind map as appropriate.
Blended Learning Activity 1
Email your tutor a copy of the final version of your mind map for assessment and feedback purposes.
The mind maps will also be uploaded on to Moodle for other learners on this course to view and
comment upon via the social forum.
Slide 9: Activity 4
Choose 5 of the verbs (key phrases for assessment) you either already use and have included in your
mind map or some from the previous slide which you have not used before to formulate 5 questions
that you can use in your teaching, learning & assessment practice. Then, extend the questions so that
an additional question can be posed to stretch and challenge your learners.
Slide 10: Activity 5
Study the generic evaluation question openers on the slide and use them to produce the learning
objectives and a bank of questions for the next session you teach. Once again, extend the questions
so that an additional question can be posed to stretch and challenge your learners.
Blended Learning Activity 2
Email your tutor a copy of your questions for assessment and feedback purposes.
Slide 11: Read the slide to review the objectives which were produced for this session. As you can see
the objectives have been scaffolded and have guided you through the different levels of Bloom’s
taxonomy from knowledge through to synthesis.
Blended Learning Activity 3
1. Ensure you make at least three contributions to the social forum above, reviewing the content
and activities included in this blended learning staff development session.
2. Apply the content of this session to your session planning and teaching, learning and assessment
practice.
3. Email your tutor copies of your teaching, learning and assessment plans for feedback.
4. Contact the Head of Quality to arrange an ungraded teaching, learning and assessment
observation to receive feedback on how you have applied the content of this session to your
teaching, learning and assessment practice.
If you have any problems accessing any of the learning materials, activities or resources on
Moodle, please contact the Head of Quality or ICS helpdesk.
