Given by: Cheryl Chesser Gamer, 1 Hearthstone Drive, Rome, Georgia 30161 Deposited by Purchased from Other items

Date & method of arrival: 17 June 198530 January 1986 (additional material from Watson Dyer)

DESCRIPTIONLuna Thomason Holcomb, bom in 1891 in Texas, became interested in genealogy when

she wanted to join the Daughters of the American Revolution. During the 1930's and 1940's, she traveled over much of the South, wrote anyone who might have information, and hired researchers to help her. She started with the Ingram family (her paternal grandmother), but also recorded all connecting names. The major part of the collection concerns the family names Ingram, Thomason, and Holcomb, but there are many other names included.

In 1980 Mrs. Holcomb's son gave her research material to a distant relative, Griffin Chesser, who sorted through the material with the help of a genealogist, Watson Dyer. The material was later donated to the Hargrett Library by Mr. Chesser's daughter. Mrs. Holcomb's date of death is unknown. Although Mr. Dyer states 1940, there are letters written to and from her as late as 1950.

The papers are arranged in alphabetical order by family name. There are many rough notes with several family names on one page. Some of the notes are typed, and whenever possible, the rough notes are placed with the typed copies. Many of the pages of correspondence and notes have been separated since the original research was done, and are now incomplete. Each family name includes any related correspondence, because much genealogical information is included in many of the letters.

In addition to research material and correspondence, the collection includes clippings, names and addresses of researchers, and research reference sources.

HOOKER COLLECTION

Inventory Compiled by:

THE HOOKER COLLECTION 2153 & 2153-a

The Hooker Collection comprises ca^. 5 shelf feet, (ca. 1^700 items) and ranges in dates from 1793 Cl830's - 1880'sH to 1908. Lady Hyacinth Hooker, wife of Sir Joseph D. Hooker, completed at least four autograph albums of prominent people. The majority of the items are of Victorian English men and women. Two albums were devoted to members of the Linnaen Society and the Royal Society. As well as natural historians, Lady Hyacinth also collected statesmen and politicians, artists and literary figures, royalty, and European and American notables.

The majority of letters are addressed to Sir Joseph Dalton Hooker Cl8l7-19li3 and date from the l830's to the l880's. Lady Hyacinth evidently removed these letters from her husband's files. She also collected letters and autographs dating from the eighteenth century. These are directed to a variety of addressee's including: William Jackson Hooker; Hyacinth Hooker; George Betham; Sir William Jardine, Lady Hyacinth's first husband; members of the Carpenter family; and Sir Henry Ule.

Joseph D. Hooker C1817-19113 was a botanist, traveller, and close friend of Charles and Thomas Henry Huxley. Darwin Hooker's career began aboard the Erebus on her Antarctic Expedition 1839-18^3* From the botanical specimens he collected, Hooker published six volumes on the flora of the areas he visited. He travelled extensively visiting India and Nepal, Egypt, Horace and Lebanon, and the United States. He was appointed assistant director of Kew Gardens in 1855. When his father Sir William Jackson Hooker C1785-18653 died, he became director. He retired in 1885 to Sunmingdale where he continued his research and writing. Hooker authored many studies of flora.

Hooker's scientific friends spanned the globe and are present in this collection of correspondence. Subject content deals with social activities, identification of botanical specimens, scientific news, and local events. The albums also contained photegraphs, cartes de viste, illustrations and printed items.

The items were all removed from the albums. The collection was divided into two series. The first consisting of one box containing individual autographs, photographs and illustrations. DESCRIPTION

The horn book received its name from the thin, translucent layer of horn which was placed over the simple text to protect it from children's little fin gers. The text was usually the alphabet, the arabic numerals, and the Lord's Prayer, which was written or printed on a piece of paper. HOWARD - COMER GENEALOGICAL COLLECTION

MSS 2647

The genealogical collections consists of 13 boxes and 5786 items of material on the Howard and Randolph family lines of Virginia and Georgia and some European connections. There are many inter-related lines in both families and between the families. The Randolph family was separated by family name, usually the daughter's married name, when practical, but the researcher should remember that there is material through both lines and a certain folder may not be all inclusive. The Howard boxes have charts that run consectively through the family from the earliest date and they are in order as much as possible, using the numbering system assigned probably by Ms. Howard.

In box 6-B are two folders of Comer notebook material - this was in a book with Pauline Comer's name on it and was left practically intact except for some pages which had been burned or had water damage and needed to be copied. Again, there is material on several lines in the notebook.

There are a few photographs, correspondence and several copies of other genealogies and several bound volumes. A post card collection has items sent to Lucy plus those she probably bought.

The collection was compiled by Lucy Howard & her sister Pauline H. Comer of Athens, GA

Dec. 1990. ca 200 items added, including business/legal papers, correspondence Comer family material, mss copy of Sketch of Cobb Legion Cavalry, photos of Lucy Howard.

1991 - added material includes following Bibles - Comer, 2 Glenn, Randolph; 9 photos, ALS dated 9 Nov 1898; box of photos.

DESCRIPTIONWritten when Atlanta's hometown poet was 8^ years old, this letter of

26 January 1919 discusses the activities of the Burns Club of Atlanta and the anniversary of Burns' birthday. Hubner encloses a two-page poem, entirely in manuscript, titled "The Birthday of Burns". It closes "He gave to earth the gift God gave, /And still for us sings from the grave."

Hubner, called by Bertha Sheppard Hart "the Whittier of the South," was for many years the literary editor of the Atlanta Journal. His War Poets of the South and Confederate J2amp Fire Songs was suggested to him by his service as a Confederate soldier. His loyalty and love for the South is shown not only in this work but also in his Representative Southern Poets. His method of treatment of these poets shows his familiarity with their words, a skillful use of judicial criticism and an appreciation of poetic art.

DESCRIPTION :

A very large collection (more than 15,000 items) consisting for the most part of the papers of Dudley M. Hughes (1848-1927), a prominent Georgia agriculturist and United States Congressman from 1909-1917. In Congress Hughes was Chairman of the House Committee on Education and co-author of the Smith-Hughes Act (the Vocational Education Act).

The bulk of these papers deal with Hughes' agricultural enterprises, congressional campaigns, and congressional patronage. There are also a large number of letteisfrom Mr. and Mrs. Hughes, while in Washington, to their children in Georgia. There are few valuable autograph items in this collection, but two Woodrow Wilson letters are outstanding. Though there is much routine correspondence, a careful study of this collection is essential for a true understanding of the politics of agriculture in the New South.

See: Dictionary of American Biography, IX, 348, for a sketch of Hughes.

Hunter, Nathaniel Wyche, 1811-1849. Nathaniel Wyche and Sarah R. Hunter papers, 1820-1869. 1.5 linear A.

Arranged by record type.

Nathaniel Wyche Hunter (1811-1849), graduated from West Point (1833), served in the U.S. Army during the Florida Wars and Mexican War in Company H of the 2nd Regular U.S. Dragoons. Married Sarah R. Golding of Athens, Georgia in 1846.

The collection consists of papers of Nathaniel Wyche and Sarah R. Golding Hunter from 1820-1869. The earliest correspondence (1840-1843) is to Sarah R. Golding from family and friends, mainly discussing Athens social life and their experiences at school. The majority of the collection is comprised of correspondence (1843-1846) between Hunter and his fiancee and later wife Sarah R. Golding while he served in the 2nd Cavalry (Dragoons) of the U.S. Army, particularly during the Mexican War. His early letters discuss mostly their budding romance, but later letters describe camp conditions, travel to Mexico, the Mexican countryside, and engagements of his unit. Includes letters from the Augusta Arsenal (Ga.), Fort Columbus (N.Y.), Fort Jessup, Corpus Christi (Tex.), and Camargo (Mexico) with details on the Battle of Palo Alto and Reseca de la Palma (May 1846). The collection contains some official military correspondence such as orders, memos and correspondence documenting the actions of John E. Wool, Zachary Taylor, Irvin McDowell, William Joseph Hardee, and John S. Wood.

The papers also include diaries kept by Hunter from October 1-15,1846 discussing his trip to Mexico and another from February 21 - March 12,1848 describing his command of American troops near Monterrey (Mexico); and a diary kept by Sarah G. Hunter from 1848-1849 mainly describing Athens (Ga.) social life and the death of her husband.
