Notes & Translations

Missa in C Perhaps one of his most popular works, Missa in C was composed for the Mass for Easter day in 1779, during Wolfgang’s employment with the Archbishop in Salzburg. It fits the requirements of the sovereign to last no more than 45 minutes, but still features the instrumentation of grander “solemn” masses, including trumpets, timpani, horns and oboes. As early as the 19th century, the mass has been referred to as “Coronation Mass” even though Mozart himself did not give it that name. It is speculated that it was performed for coronation festivities in Prague (where he was held in high regard), either for Leopold II in 1791 or for his successor Francis I in 1792. Mozart’s operas, including The Marriage of Figaro, were wildly popular in Prague. It is likely that one of the reasons this mass was so well received there is because of the soprano solo in the final movement, which is remarkably similar to the Countess’s aria “Dove sono” in that opera.

KyrieLord, have mercy.Christ, have mercy.Lord, have mercy.

GloriaGlory be to God in the highest. And on earth peaceto all of good will.We praise Thee; we bless Thee;we worship Thee; we glorify Thee.We give thanks to Theefor Thy great glory.Lord God, Heavenly King,God the Father Almighty.Lord Jesus Christ, the only begotten Son.Lord God, Lamb of God,Son of the Father.Thou that takest away the sins of the world, have mercy upon us.Thou that takest away the sins of the world, receive our prayer.Thou that sittest at the right hand of the Father, have mercy upon us.For thou only art holy, thou only art the Lord, thou only art the most high, Jesus Christ.Together with the Holy Ghostin the glory of God the Father. Amen.

CredoI believe in one God;the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth,

Tucson High Magnet School (THMS) is part of the Tucson Unified School District with magnet programs in visual and performing arts and natural science. It is the oldest high school in Arizona, the largest in Southern Arizona and the sixth largest in the state with more than 3,000 students enrolled. Choral groups have been an important aspect of THMS for generations. Students have the opportunity to participate in one of the five choirs offered, and pride themselves on their ability to sing in a variety of musical styles. In addition, singers learn how to become an ensemble, and to listen to and respect each other. In today’s performance, three of the five choirs are participating. Together they comprise the advanced classes at THMS choir and vocal music program.

CHIZURU JURMAN teaches vocal music and directs five choirs at Tucson High Magnet School. She has taught voice, choir, musical theatre and opera in Arts Integration, and has performed mezzo-soprano and soprano repertoire professionally in concerts, recitals, operas and oratorios locally and internationally, as well as in professional choirs. She received a Master of Music degree in vocal performance from University of Arizona under Charles Roe, teaching credentials through University of Arizona and Pima Community College, and undergraduate degrees from Long Island University in New York and Rikkyo - St. Paul’s University in Tokyo.
