The University Club is now entering the most active quarter of the year in terms of member usage. In addition to our typical busy season and activities relating to ArtPrize, we are planning holiday parties and activities centered around our 90th Anniversary. See the Events Insert for specific details.
As we continue our look back into the history of the Club this month, as reported in the minutes, you will find the 1980s to be a roller coaster ride throughout the decade : - The Club began the decade on a strong note with 309 members, a “healthy financial statement” and a long term plan to remodel the dining rooms after 14 years of occupancy in its current Old Kent Bank location.
- Club President Dana Baldwin’s term expired in April of 1980, and was followed by a two year term of President (and later Mayor) John Logie.
- During Mr. Logie’s term there was much discussion of accruing the Law Library space, currently our rooms with southern exposure. Also, talk of a merger with the Downtown Athletic Club was brought up once again. After long debates, it was decided that “the Club could not absorb the increases in debt” on either of these.
- In 1983, midway through the remodel, the Club began to see decreases in membership and increases in expenses. Over the next few years we posted year end losses resulting in scaled back services, increased dues, and adjustments in menu prices.
- Down to 180 members in 1985, a membership drive that reduced the initiation fee to $63.00 was introduced during the Presidencies of Harry (Skip) Baxter and Tom Fox. Membership grew from 180 to 270 by the end of 1986. (We now have 630!)
- With continual unforeseen expenses, the Club continued to sustain losses which prompted a letter to the membership, from President Larry Fredricks, on the bleak state of the Club in 1987. The Club Manager left abruptly in January of 1988 and an interim Manager was put in place. In July, the minutes expressed a need for a permanent Club Manager and some chatter of relocating to another downtown area.
- The Search Committee, headed by Larry Fredricks and Margaret Cook, offered the management position to yours truly, Cindi Poll. Holding many positions in the Private Club industry probably made for a good candidate, but being a “problem solving, analytical, take ownership kind of gal” helped make the turn around of the Club’s financials happen rapidly. Up grades to the facility, growing membership and evening banquet business was crucial to our success as well.
- In mid 1989, our Board was once again approached by representatives of the Athletic Club stating “that the Athletic Club is likely to close by the end of the year if an arrangement with the University Club is not made”. A Committee lead by current members, Roger Oetting, Dave Muilenberg, Lynn Francis and Larry Fredricks, obtained Financial Reports leading to recommendations for further discussion and vote by the membership. An Assignment Agreement and Assumption Agreement were signed and made effective on November 1, 1989.
- In 1982, 16,805 lunches were served compared to 34,907 in 1990.
- In 1982, 10,381 dinners were served compared to 16,291 in 1990. The Club plans to celebrate the Athletic Club merger throughout the month of November when we are highlighting the decade of the 1990s. Besides our Network Nights and Wine Tastings, we are holding a few new events this fall including a Tequila Tasting, a Michigan vs. Michigan State University Tailgate Party benefiting the Scholarship Fund, and a Bourbon Tasting with food pairings. Enjoy your Club this Fall season, Cindi

The current Art Exhibit by Pamela Alderman displayed in the University
Club’s lobby will be taken down the second week of October. If you
haven’t viewed it yet, be sure to check out her amazing pieces before
they’re gone! You can also see Ms. Alderman’s ArtPrize entry, titled
Wing and a Prayer, across the street at the Amway Grand Plaza Hotel.
Do you know an artist that would like to display an exhibit in the
University Club’s lobby? The Art Committee is looking for our next
exhibit. Contact Cindi at the Club for information: 616-456-8623

ANDI GILBERT, ATHLETIC DIRECTOR | JASON GOODELL, FACILITY SUPERVISOR | 616-456-8311
As you may have noticed, we offer four yoga classes on our schedule. I recently read an article
published by the Mayo Clinic explaining the benefits of Yoga and I thought I would share what
they had to say...
“Yoga is a mind-body practice that combines stretching exercises, controlled breathing and
relaxation. Yoga can help reduce stress, lower blood pressure and improve heart function.
And almost anyone can do it.
Yoga is considered a mind-body type of complementary and alternative medicine practice.
Yoga brings together physical and mental disciplines to achieve peacefulness of body and mind,
helping you relax, and manage stress and anxiety. The potential health benefits of yoga include:
Stress Reduction: A number of studies have shown that yoga can help reduce stress and anxiety. It can also
enhance your mood and overall sense of well-being.
Improved Fitness: Practicing yoga can lead to improved balance, flexibility, range of motion and strength.
And this means you're less likely to injure yourself in other physical endeavors or in your daily activities.
Management of Chronic Conditions: Yoga can help reduce risk factors for chronic diseases, such as heart disease
and high blood pressure. Yoga might also help alleviate chronic conditions, such as depression, pain, anxiety and
insomnia.”
In my opinion, one of the perks to being a member at the University Club is the fact that we have small, intimate Yoga
classes. Each student gets the attention needed to make sure that their form is correct. Also, our instructors are
experienced and able to modify based on the individuals needs. Try out one of the Yoga classes today! - Andi
