UNION LEAGUE AFFINITY CLUBSAffinity Clubs are associations within the League where members can share their

common interests. Since the League’s founding in 1862, members have always partic-ipated in activities such as bowling, billiards, chess, cards, etc. As the years passed, membership grew and interests diversified. The range and scope of member activities changed dramatically with the addition of aviation, dance, golf etc. The expansion of these activities prompted the creation of the Affinity Club Committee in 1994.

There are currently 22 Affinity Clubs, and new clubs may be added to meet the interests of our members. All clubs are organized and run by League members. Hundreds of members enjoy the array of clubs available. Most clubs require no previous experience or expertise, just an interest in the subject. All members and their spouses are welcome to join.

To join any of the Affinity Clubs please visit www.unionleague.org/members/affinity-clubs.php for the Affinity Club application or contact the club coordinator.

GOLF SOCIETYThe golf affinity club was founded in 1996 by League members, Dr. Al Pizzica and

Harry Rosenberg. The original purpose was to offer League members the opportunity to play the great golf courses in our region at member sponsored outings. In 2018, the golf club is being rebranded as Union League Golf Society. The Golf Society will offer a year-long competition at 16 venues in 2018. Competitions with the League’s reciprocal clubs have expanded to two events this year with more to come in the future. Trips to play great private clubs within driving distance will be available for groups of 8 to 12 as well as organized trips to destination clubs and resorts in the United States and abroad. Lastly, we will be offering a “Lunch and Learn” program at both the League House and The Union League Golf Club at Torresdale where members will have lunch with one of our golf professionals and learn about how to use clubs correctly. After lunch, members will go to the practice area where the professional staff will demonstrate skills to help improve your game. CLUB TABLESIn 1884, Club Tables were conceived as a means of fostering and reinforcing

camaraderie and friendship. Fellow members who shared interests professionally, politically and socially found increased value in their club as a result of sharing their ideas and time together. Originally table members congregated around the lunch hour; however today they are much more than just luncheon clubs. They are looked upon as clubs within the League and have evolved over time to be a strong social center of League life.

The number of Club Tables has varied from one decade to the next. This is due to new clubs emerging while others have chosen to join together. There are currently 16 Club Tables with membership from 17 to over 200 members. Today over 2,000 League members are also Club Table members. The Club Table system is unique to Philadelphia as we are the only private city club offering this complement to membership.

While traditionally Club Tables followed a casual format, they now elect officers, establish by-laws, host guest speakers and have seasonal outings and parties. Each club has the option of hosting lunch at its own luncheon table located in Founders once or twice a week. The tables offer a convenient setting for members and their guests to socialize and dine. Club Table membership is an opportunity for sharing common interests, building relationships and making a large institution more personable.
