Today, only solvent printers can provide the rich glossy colors required by vehicle wrap customers, and only solvent printers can deliver repeatable prints day in and dayoutwithoutheat-relateddistortionand color imperfections associated with Latexprinters.

Solvent printers come in many sizes and prices, but the most common size for vehiclegraphicsis54”-64”wide,withtrue720x720dpiandatleast6colors.Higherresolution printers are often too slow to be commercially viable in the vehicle graphic business where “time is money”. Solvent inks also come in many flavors such as eco-solvent,low-solvent,realsolvent,etc. For rich, glossy colors that have the outdoor durability and lightfastness required for vehicle graphics, choose alow-solventortruesolvent ink.

Avoid yellow inks without nickel as they will fade substantially faster than yellow inkswithnickel.Eco-solventinksthathavea lower odor, and lower levels of solvent inks often sacrifice adhesion, lightfastness andcolorgamut.Seiko’slineoflow-solvent inks have the very largest color gamut in the industry and the longest outdoor durability. SqueakyCleanisthekeytogoodadhesion!Toexecutethis,therearestepsyou’llneedto take to insure a solid foundation that will promote adhesion. •Washthevehiclethoroughly24hoursbefore you intend to apply media.•PaycloseattentiontoalltheNooksandCranny’s(ifthematerialsgoingtofailthisismostlikelywhereitwillbegin)•Justpriortoinstallationyou’llwanttohermetically clean the intended surface with Ideally,isopropylalcohol.AgaintheNooksand Cranny’s.•Intheeventthevehicleisdamporwetjustpriortoinstallationyouwillneedtoabsolutelydrytheexpansionjointsandseams thoroughly. As the Digital medias for wrapping vehicles today are all dry installations!!•Roadtarandbugremoval:Inmanycases it is necessary to use more aggressive chemistry to remove these types of contaminants.WeuseXyleneinthissituation. Nowthatyou’revehicle/surfaceisSqueakyCleanIt’stimetoapply.Hereisachecklistofhow to get it right the First Time.

Area: It’s imperative that the area that you will install in is clean and free of debris, preferablywelllitspacewith4feetofclearperimeter to install comfortably.

Placement:“MeasureTwiceStickitOnce”isthe old adage, that is spot on for a successful install.WitheitherTapeorMagnets,you’llplacethegraphicontothevehicle(backingisstillonthemedia).Inmostcasesmagnetsarebest, as this will allow you to easily move your graphic into position. Once in position, use amarkingsystem(e.g.greasepencil/stabillo)that will help you hunt those marks upon removal of the backing. In the case of our car here at the show the body is aluminum so we’ll be using the other method of pinning thegraphic,Tape(medtackpaintertype).

Media: There are many types of media used today in vehicle graphics, primarily all being anair-releasetypesystem.However,mostofthoseadhesivesareHighTackinnatureandcan be more difficult to apply and reposition than others. So check to see how aggressive you media is to determine how you’ll make yourfirstmovesinapplying!

Installation: As you’ll see here at the show it’s easier to show you than write a novel on HowTo.Toolingisoneareathatisimperativeforasuccessfulinstallation.Hereisatoollistand a few tips on the installation phase:

Squeegees:Teflon®type,Softstylefabric/micro-fiberandFeltGloves:WrapGloves™specificallydesigned for graphics. They conform to the hands and easily slide across the surface without transferring oils and contaminants to the finished surface. Knives: We specifically use the brand OLFA®asthismanufacturer has knives and blades that areprecise and quality built.HeatGun/Torch:Our people primarily use an Automatic propane torch for your everydayinstallations.However,youmaywant to start with a heat gun until you become familiar with the torch.Burnishingtools: Brushes that come in various sizes for tight areas like rivets and seams.Tapes:Paintersstyletape(Medtackcleanremovable),Pinstripetape,notmaskingtapebut an elastic type that will not break when applyingpressure(SeetheBluepinstripetape).AirReleaseTool: There are many brands of this type of tool. Find Two and stash one away.TapeMeasures: We carry different styles butprimarilyyou’llwanttwotypes(1)thatconformable(e.g.12footer½”width)andalarger25footerrigidforlongerruns.ToolBelt: So you’re not chasing tools whenyouneedem!Cleaning Solutions: As spec’d on page 7.
