3 Ways School Districts Use FLEX Curriculum

FLEX can support any district’s curriculum adoption needs, regardless of the size of the district or what the review process looks like.

SUPPLEMENTALThe district doesn’t have a set curriculum or review process. Teachers are autonomous as long as they are meeting state and national standards.

FLEX is supplemental, enhancing what teachers already teach in the classroom and allowing them to search by content type or standard to round out their curriculum.

REFRESHERFLEX can help keep the curriculum relevant from year to year with new materials (lessons, assessments, artist bios, vocabulary lists, student worksheets, student reference guides, student-facing videos, and more) released each month. As the library of resources grows, teachers are able to refresh their curriculum and stay current with changing trends in the field.

COMPLETE ADOPTION It’s curriculum adoption time, and it can be overwhelming to start from scratch and reimagine curriculum for the district. The time and finances it takes to develop materials after a curriculum review process is often underestimated.

FLEX offers a complete library of materials to drive curriculum review while still giving teachers autonomy to design a custom curriculum. Bundle FLEX Curriculum with PRO Learning for ongoing professional learning to support the curriculum.

COLLABORATIVE CURRICULUM

For teachers who are working with a common district curriculum that still allows them a degree of self-sufficiency. FLEX allows the art team to collaborate as a department in order to ensure continuity.

4 Ways Art Teachers Use FLEX Curriculum

FLEX Curriculum can support individual teacher’s needs.

SELF-DIRECTED CURRICULUM

For teachers who are self-sufficient and in charge of their own curriculum yet still want to grow in their practice and save time.

How to Fund FLEX Curriculum in Your DistrictCurriculum is the foundation of any art program. In the arts, curriculum may not look like a traditional textbook; however, art teachers should still have equitable access to curriculum funds to purchase art-specific curriculum materials. Consider the pathways below to access curriculum funds available to the arts.

CURRICULUM ADOPTION CYCLE While visual arts teachers

generally teach more students than most teachers, the arts can often be overlooked on curriculum adoption cycles. If you aren’t included in your school’s rotation for curriculum adoption materials, advocate to be added! This would allow you access to guaranteed funds for curriculum on a regular cycle.

SUPPLEMENTAL CURRICULUM / SUPPLY BUDGET

Some schools allocate a pool of funds that are accessible outside of the adoption cycle for supplemental curriculum materials. Other schools allocate an annual supply budget to each teacher and expect their supplemental curriculum materials will come out of that budget. Ask about these options to fund FLEX Curriculum.

TITLE I, PART A Funds are intended to support improvement

activities and technical assistance for schools identified for comprehensive or targeted support and improvement under their state accountability system. Eligible activities include arts-focused school turnaround models that feature arts instruction, incorporating arts in a school improvement plan as a means of promoting a well-rounded education, and professional development to support arts educators.

TITLE II, PART A Funds are intended to recruit and enhance the quality and effectiveness

of current teachers, principals, and other school leaders. Eligible activities include collaboration time for teaching artists and arts educators to plan lessons and time for teachers to develop curriculum in the arts.

TITLE IV, PART A Funds to support providing all students

with access to equitable, rigorous, and relevant education, which may include the arts, and effectively using technology to improve academic achievement and digital literacy. Eligible activities include arts instructional programs that provide students with a well-rounded education and art programs that promote students’ physical and mental health, trauma recovery, or social-emotional skills.

TITLE IV, PART F: SUBPART 4 Funds include assistance

for arts education grants that support efforts to promote arts education, including arts education for disadvantaged students and students with disabilities. Eligible activities include arts courses or programs and development and use of instructional materials and digital resources to support arts instruction.
