HF HIGH SCHOOLThe beautiful campus at Homewood Flossmoor Community High School, serves as the home for our  South Suburban based summer programs.  The campus features high-tech learning facilities as well as training facilities for afternoon sports programming.

ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT

EARLY LEARNINGThe academic program segment is structure to allow children the opportunity to continue building a strong foundation of knowledge necessary to excel in today’s academic environment and also gain exposure to enrichment learning themes in concentrated subject areas. Monday through Thursday, students participate in a three and a half hour academic session. The first part of the summer will feature advanced curriculum in the subject areas of language arts, math and science, designed to serve as a jump start and preview for the upcoming school year. Campers will also partake in the following STEM curriculum themes:

1ST GRADE STEM THEME: Awesome Explosions & Collisions2ND GRADE STEM THEME: Designing Sailing Ships3RD GRADE STEM THEME: Grossology 4TH GRADE STEM THEME: Introduction to Robotics

MIDDLE SCHOOLThe core enrichment structure for emerging fifth and sixth grade students includes language arts and STEM curriculum, allowing for a greater span of learning across multiple disciplines. Twice a week, Math Lab instructors will present grade specific themes and assignments designed to continue building the child’s analytic competencies. The entrepreneurship program segment exposes campers to various business elements including product ideation, marketing strategy, and finance. Campers then execute these concepts by forming their own businesses in a competitive team oriented format.

JUNIOR HIGHThe daily enrichment core for emerging seventh and eighth grade students is geared to help them prepare for the greater demands of high school. The language arts curriculum introduces socially relevant concepts that will generate critical analysis and thought provoking discussion. STEM themes, will also drive their intellectual curiosity and creativity. The entrepreneurship program segment introduces advanced business tenants including organizational structure, supply chain and the financial markets. Campers will also experience the business cycle, as they go from the planning to market in a competitive team format. 7th graders will also learn about content related to the US History Tour, including the revolutionary war, constitution, slavery, reconstruction and civil rights era. 8th graders will learn about Canadian French culture as part of end of camp Oh Canada Tour.

CIVIL RIGHTS HISTORY TOUROver a 4-day period, the Wiz Kids will visit many of our nation’s magnificent landmarks in Memphis including: the National Civil Rights Museum, Slave Haven Underground Railroad Museum, the Rock ‘n’ Soul Museum, Cotton Row, and a riverboat trip along the Mississippi River.Dates: August 6-9

OH CANADA TOURThe 8th grade Wiz Kids will venture north of the border for a trip designed to offer students an expanded view of the world. This country’s rich traditions will be explored in the cities of Montreal and Toronto. Several of the landmarks that will be explored over this 5-day tour include: the Montreal  Science Centre, Niagara Falls, Bateau-Mouche and CN Tower. Dates: August 6-9

***Camp enrollment during the week of August 5th-9th is only available to 7th & 8th graders attending the special tours.

EXCITING ELECTIVES

ARTOur Art class offers instruction in a variety of mediums, including drawing, painting, printmaking, and sculpture.

COMPUTER SCIENCETaking place in the campus’s Technology Center, our Computer Science program provides a grade-level appropriate introduction to creating presentations, basic websites, and coding.

CULINARY ARTSDesigned for our 7th and 8th graders, Culinary Arts is a hands-on class where students gain the skills and confidence to prepare delicious and healthy meals.

(Also offered as a Core Activity.)

DRAMAOur drama program covers acting, singing, improv, role-playing, and more! This program is designed to help student become more confident in themselves, both onstage and off, through the dramatic arts.

EXCITING ELECTIVES

INTRO TO MUSICThis class provides students in grades 1-4 with the fundamentals of music principles, including basic music theory, ear training and composition.

LEGO BUILDERSThe Lego More to Math program takes abstract math concepts and makes them more concrete for our youngest Wiz Kids (grades 1-2). Students will learn to take chances in addressing a problem, model what they have learned, and problem solve through collaborative exercises.

MEDIAThis elective, offered to students in grades 5-8, focuses on digital imaging. Students will shoot photos and video on digital cameras and learn how to manipulate and edit digital film through associated lab activities. They will go through the entire process of creating a story, from field reporting and interviewing to audio/visual recording and editing. Our Media students will also partner with the Drama classes to create a commercial.

ADDITIONAL PROGRAMMING

ENTREPRENEURSHIPIn this course, designed for our older grades, students will learn how to take an idea and develop it into a business. Projects are collaborative, and focus on developing students skills in financial literacy, critical thinking and communication.

ETIQUETTE LESSONSOur etiquette lessons, which are part of all Wiz Kids campers’ days, offer grade-level appropriate instruction in soft skills necessary to make lasting impressions and be successful in the classroom and workplace. Lessons include understanding body language, manners outside of the home, digital diplomacy and table manners.

MATH LABThis extra academic course, designed for our 5-6 grade students, further develops math skills and shores up the comprehension of basic concepts as they prepare move into more complicated math classes in junior high and high school. 9

BASKETBALLOur basketball program, available to students all grades, focuses on fundamentals and becoming a complete player, both offensively and defensively. Students practice these skills through individual warm ups and drills, as well as scrimmages and intra-camp competitive games.

GOLFOur golf program is divided into two groups: Novice and Advanced. The Novice group focuses on the basics of golf: safety, etiquette, scoring through fun games, drills, and some course play. The Advanced group, comprised of intermediate to experienced junior golfers, will focus on golf fitness, short game refinement, tournament preparation, and course play.

MODERN DANCEThis course is divided into two groups: Beginner and Intermediate, and technical skills will be taught according to dancers’ placement. Students can also expect instruction in the history of modern dance and physical wellness and body mechanics.

SOCCEROur soccer course focuses on technical aspects of the game, including dribbling, passing and finishing. We also provide goalkeeper-specific training. Players are also challenged through a combination of small-sided and full team matches.

SWIMMINGBy popular demand, swimming returns to Wiz Kids as a Core Program option for our 5th-8th grade grouping. In addition to swim instruction, swimmers will be introduced to a new activity every week. Activities will include Jr Lifeguard, Water Volleyball, Water Frisbee, Water Archery Tag, and Splashball. At the end of the session, a swim meet will be held on Championship Friday.

CORE ACTIVITIESTAE KWON DO

Under the instruction of Master Kim, campers enrolled in Tae Kwon Do will develop basic martial arts skills that focus on proper breathing, mental focus, and self-discipline. For more advanced students, this course provides an opportunity to prepare for promotion by honing their techniques.

TENNISThe tennis program places a special emphasis on player development, and is one of our most popular activities, providing instruction for all grade and skill levels. For our beginner students, we focus on proper form, stroke, court position and movement. For our more advanced players, we work on stroke refinement and tournament readiness, which students develop through weekly match play. Our tennis staff is comprised of several USPTA certified professionals who have experience coaching students of all skill levels.

TRACK & FIELDThrough the multiple disciplines of sprinting, hurdling, jumping, throwing, and pole vaulting, campers learn about speed and power development, running and field mechanics, warm-up routines, plyometrics, and more! Camper participate in inter-camp meets throughout the summer.

TUMBLINGThis activity, for campers in 1-4 grade, is geared toward body control. Campers will focus on building agility and flexibility, which supports athletic development for all sports!

VOLLEYBALLOur Volleyball program is carefully designed to advance campers’ skills in all volleyball fundamentals, including serving, setting, passing, attacking, blocking, and digging. Campers will develop their skills through a combination of drills and team play.

FIELD TRIPS & ON CAMPUS EXPLORATION

On most Fridays, we will take the campers on a variety of eld trip adventures designed to provide them with fun, enriching, entertaining and diverse experiences. Activities are selected based on the age and range from curriculum inspired trips like Blackberry farms and Sci-Tech Museum to high energy escapades to Pelican Harbor and Laser Quest. Occasionally, we will even bring to the campus external programs that are uniquely customized for our groups, like culinary expeditions or mock-court trial simulations.

SPECIAL DAYSThroughout the summer, we occasionally have activities that alter the typical schedules. There will be camp competitions, career days, movie presentations, performances, and tournaments. Camp attendees will also have the opportunity to participate in change of pace sporting games, and cultural art projects. This year we will mark the return Family Day and the end of camp Awards Banquet.

NUTRITIONHealth consciousness is an important theme for Wiz Kids programs. As such, we exclusively provide the freshest organic and natural foods to camp participants during morning and afternoon snack times.

CAMP UNIVERSITYThe program is designed as an individualized summer experiences for students entering grades 9-12. The offerings include intense college entrance exam preparation, career exploration courses, and a college tour series. We also offer elite off-season training activities in various athletic programs.

Except for our College Tour series, which takes place on Fridays, all classes occur in the afternoon to accommodate the schedules of students who are participating in summer school.

SUMMER 2019 ENROLLMENT INFORMATIONADDITIONAL INFORMATION

Deposits: A $250 non-refundable fee will be collected at the time of registration. Balances for all camp programs must be paid in full by May 20, 2019 in order to complete enrollment. We cannot guarantee placement in camp if balances are outstanding after that date. Deposits are non-refundable and non-transferable to other Wiz Kids Camps programs.

Late Payments: Tuition accounts with outstanding balances after May 20 will be assessed a $100 convenience fee. No exceptions.

Refund Policy: All cancellations must be in writing and submitted to Wiz Kids Camps, LLC. If a cancellation occurs anytime prior to April 1, 2019 100% of payments (less the non-refundable fee) will be returned. If cancellation occurs anytime between April 2, 2019 and May 1, 2019 40% of camp fees will be withheld. After May 1, 2019 100% of all paid camp fees will be withheld.

Register Early! Thanks to your support, Wiz Kids has grown tremendously the past few years. As a result, all of the available spots in our last camp seasons filled quickly, and our more popular activities filled in the first months of registration.
