VOL. 5, ISSUE 3 SUMMER 2015 The Two Constants of James Smith’s Life - UD Basketball and Women By Vicky Forrest, Media Content Editor James was the only son in a family of six. His experience with women began when he was the only boy surrounded by five sisters who helped prepare him for what came next in life – three daughters. Such a turn of fortune might have dampened the spirits of a man who loved sports and was an avid baseball player in his youth. But James just embraced the opportunity. He enlisted all his girls in softball and coached them every year. As a left-handed first baseman in his youth, James enjoyed being on the field, and enjoyed teaching his daughters’ softball skills. Later he found another favorite spot—courtside at UD Arena. James cheered for the Flyers for 40 years from his season ticket holder’s seat, and watched some of the most exciting games played by UD’s greatest players. James was forced to miss this season’s games due to his health, but still had the heart of a fervent Flyers fan. Learning of this, Hospice of Dayton made a point to bring some Flyers excitement to him. UD Athletic Hall of Fame member, Ed Young (Flyers 1982-87, 1253 total points scored), and WHIO Voice of the Flyers announcer, Larry Hansgen, paid a personal visit to James. The two thanked him for his many years of support for Flyers basketball and shared some memories of seasons past. James is proof that 40 years of UD Flyers love is not enough. Flyers love is forever. A note from one of James’ daughters received the week following this special visit: “I just wanted to let you know that my Dad passed away last Wednesday. Both of my sisters and I wanted you to please let Larry and Ed know what a great night we had with Dad that evening. It ended up being our last “great” night as a family and we will never forget it. Once again—words cannot express how grateful we are. God bless you all.” —Kelli Angel

James was the only son in a family of six. His experience with women began when he was the only boy surrounded by five sisters who helped prepare him for what came next in life – three daughters. Donations, Large and SmallBy Kent Anderson, President/CEO

When

families in our community face the challenges of a life-limiting illness, it is important that they are able to focus on quality of life, sharing time with loved ones, and making every moment count. Celebrating memories and making new ones, holding each other’s hands, enjoying the beauty of a summer breeze in a beautiful garden—families in our community are blessed with the ability to do these things because of your support for Hospice of Dayton.

Your donations, large and small, enable us to walk with families as they bear the loss of a loved one, and to support them with the highest standards of clinical care, envelop them in comfort and counsel them in grief. Our mission is only possible because of community members like you who have gifted us with strength and support for 36 years. On behalf of the thousands of lives we havehad the honor of touching, we thank you.

Making a legacy gift to Hospice of DaytonRecently, my family got together to celebrate the lives of those we love on Memorial Day. We grilled hamburgers, took a dip in the chilly pool and enjoyed each other’s company. We shared funny stories about my father and how much we missed having his presence surround us. Hospice of Dayton was an integral part of my father’s life. After volunteering over 10 years of service and chairing the Bowl for Hospice for over 15 years, he knew what really mattered—helping people.

During the course of conversation, my sister let me know she was doing her estate planning. She wanted to know how to include Hospice of Dayton in her plans, in memory of our father. I was so touched that she appreciated the care given to our family members to the extent that she wanted to ensure future families will know that same care will be there for them! I know my father was smiling down on us at that moment.

If you are thinking of making a legacy gift to Hospice of Dayton, one of the easiest ways is to include us in your will. If you already have a will, your attorney can make a simple one-page amendment to your current document. Your gift can be a set amount or a percentage of your estate.

If you would like more information on estate planning, please contact me at 937-258-5537. Thank you for all you do for our patients and families. You are now a part of their lives too!

The “Yeck Studio House” Expands its Art Program By Jonathan Haag, LISW-S, ATR-BC

the William and Dorothy Yeck Family Grief Counselingand Art Center opened in June 2014, Drawn Together has settled into the studio house and empowered many people to create lots of art. We have completed three Art Forever After grief support groups with approximately 40 adult, teen and child participants, and hosted a seven week art-based support group for the Epilepsy Foundation. We have also served many Hospice of Dayton families through appointments and open studio time.

The Drawn Together art program provides various opportunities to create art that is designed to enhance the expression of grief or art that cherishes the memories of the deceased loved one. This can be done through individual sessions or through the art-based, multi-generational grief group, Art Forever After. Art media used include scrapbooking, drawings, ceramic and painting projects. One doesn’t have to be “artistically gifted” to create art or benefit from Drawn Together.

The Art Forever After group is offered in three month segments, from February through April and September through November, from 6:30-8:30 p.m. every Monday evening. This group is de-signed to be family friendly and multi-generational with ages 7 to 107 welcome. There is no cost, but registration is required.

For more information about the Drawn Together art program, to schedule an individual appointment with the art therapist or to register for the Art Forever After group, please call Pathways of Hope at 937-258-4991.

Employee Match Program

Wednesday evening visitors to Hospice House have been greeted at the reception desk by the smiling face of Mary Jo Shia, a volunteer for two years. Mary Jo’s employer, Ball Aerospace and Technologies, generously offers matching donations of time or money to an organization of the employee’s choice through their Community Ambassador Program. For every hour of service, Ball Aerospace donates $20 to the organization, with a limit of $5,000 per year. So far in 2015, Mary Jo has raised nearly $1,500 for our mission by dedicating three hours of her time every Wednesday evening.

When asked, “Why Hospice of Dayton?” Mary Jo shared a special story about the beginnings of her passion for our organization, and how her time spent at Hospice House has become the best part of her week. In 2012, her boyfriend was diagnosed with cancer. While researching area hospices, he found Hospice of Dayton, and was intrigued by the fact that we are the area’s only not-for-profit hospice organization. Fortunately, his illness improved, but he wanted to find a way he could give back to help others with long-term illnesses. Mary Jo accompanied him to our volunteer orientation, and was incredibly moved by the Hospice of Dayton employees’ magnetic love and passion for our mission.

Does your employer offer matching donations? If so, please consider designating Hospice of Dayton as your organization of choice like Mary Jo did. Her gift of time and Ball Aerospace’s donation greatly help us achieve our mission of providing superior care and services to our patients and families.

Renewable Energy ProgramBy Vicky Forrest, Media Content Editor

What does Hospice of Dayton have in common with Costco, IKEA, WalMart and FedEx? All of them are adopting solar energy to gain control of energy costs. For Hospice of Dayton, the choice demonstrates “a commitment to the sustainability of the hospice mission and the sustainability of our envi-ronment,” according to President and CEO Kent Anderson.

Hospice of Dayton installed 96 roof top mounted solar panels on a ware-house as part of a multi-phase renewable energy program this spring. The solar panels will offset the electrical usage of the structure by 90 to 95 percent. The size of array is 25.92 kilowatts (kW) and will generate an estimated first year energy production of 32,215 kWh (kilowatt hours). The solar array will effectively reduce the carbon footprint of Hospice of Dayton by an estimated 62,000 pounds over the 25-year lifespan, equivalent to:

• 65 barrels of oil not being consumed• removing 6 cars from the road• 730 trees planted annually

Hospice of Dayton has several more projects in development that will involve solar, geothermal and otherinnovative approaches to responsible energy usage and conservation. Funding for the initial improvements is supported by donations and grants, with long-term savings envisioned.

Fearless Living and Loving

of Dayton Chaplain, John Love, started writing spiritual reflections to share with his patients and families three and a half years ago. The positive response he received from hospice patients, families and caregivers motivated him to turn his reflections into a book. The newly published Fearless Living and Loving – Christian Hope for the Sick and Their Caregivers guides readers through a spiritual journey of self-discovery.

“As a chaplain, I’m sensitive to honoring all faith traditions,” Love explains. “I didn’t write this book to change what people believe. Rather, I think it will help people clarify their beliefs and encourage readers to examine what their faith means to them. I also wanted to provide an uplifting message, a book that offers hope for people facing chronic or terminal illness and for those who love and care for them.”

Love has observed that end-of-life care presents unique challenges for professional caregivers. He says, “Hospice organizations are blessed to attract the very best of the best: nurses, aides, counselors, and so on. But the physical and emotional demands of the work can deplete caregivers and lead to burnout. I believe that spiritual work helps us grow in love and faith. And as we grow in love and faith – as we feel closer and more connected to God – we are better equipped to handle the daily stress which comes our way.”

Fearless Living and Loving is available through WestBow Press, a division of Christian publisher Thomas Nelson & Zondervan. It can be ordered online at www.westbowpress.com or by calling WestBow at 1-866-928-1240.
